Self-surrender: Putting Ourselves in the Hands of God

I received the book when I was in my 20s. The title is “Markings” and it was a book of reflections Dag Hammarskjold wrote over a period of more than 40 years. The book I read 40 years ago is not the same for me today because I am not the same person today. I understand the later notes much better now.

Dag Hammarskjold began his career as a public servant in Sweden. His jobs gave him the opportunity to serve the people of his country. He did his jobs well which led him to be placed in jobs with more responsibility . . . and pressure. He was appointed by the Swedish government to help Europe recover from the damage done by World War II.

When the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations opened up in 1953, nations seemed to be unable to find a candidate suitable to everyone. Finally, Hammarskjold’s name was submitted and, because he was almost completely unknown, he seemed to be a safe choice for the position.

Dag Hammarskjold proved to be a strong and dedicated leader. He was just as concerned about the lowest level servants of the UN as he was the most powerful ambassadors, about the smallest nations as much as the large. He was not forceful, but he was persistent. When he died in a plane crash on his way to Africa as he attempted to help end a crisis in the Congo, the world knew they had lost a great leader.

“Markings” is filled with the thoughts of a man who was troubled by the burdens of life and doubts about his ability to do what he knew he was called to do. He often described emptiness and loneliness, sadness and even fear. But what is striking is his willingness to give himself over to God.

In an interview with Edward R. Murrow in 1953, Hammarskjold said that it was “self-surrender” that gave his the ability to let go of himself and serve others. What he didn’t say was that, to help him do what he needed to do, he would put himself in the hands of God.

Two notes from the book have moved me deeply as I read them again. They are great thoughts to begin and to end a day:

Lord – Thine the day,

And I the day’s.

--- --- ---

“ – Night is drawing nigh –“

For all that has been – Thanks!

For all that shall be – Yes!

No, you don’t have to change your Sunday morning routine. The Worship Schedule doesn’t change in summer. We’ll have worship services at 8:00, 9:20 and 10:30 and we’ll continue Thursday Evening worship at 7:00 p.m. We invite you stay awhile after each Sunday service for “Coffee Hour”. You’re almost guaranteed a donut after the 8:00 service. We can’t give that guarantee after the 9:20 and 10:30 services.

The Polka Service returns July 26 & 29. The Thursday service and all three services on Sunday will ring with the joyful wound of polka music, with maybe a waltz or two thrown in.

Seeking Musicians & Vocalists for Summer Special Music

Would you like to add some-thing special to our summer worship? Your musical talent could make the worship even richer. If you would like to use your vocal or instrumental gifts and add special music to worship, contact the church office ([email protected] or 865-7595).

Church Library

Even though summer has arrived for our children it is important to keep them reading. Our church library has a large assortment of materials for people of all ages. We have “read to me” books as well as many “learn to read” books. There are books for our teens and tweens as well as adults. Stop in and check out what is available. We know you will find something you can enjoy!

Our “check out” system is old-fashioned. Inside the cover of the books you will find a card pocket with a check out card in it. On that card please write your name and the date. Then place the card in the card slot on the desk in the library. When you return the book, please place it in the “return” can next to the desk in the library. The librarians will then put the card back in the pocket and return the book to the correct shelf. Our library is a wonderful resource for all to enjoy!

Several new adult fiction books were recently processed and are ready to be checked out. They can be found on the black cart in the library.

Summer Worship Schedule

On May 2oth, thirty-three of our young people affirmed their faith and became adult members of Peace Church. We congratulate them and ask God’s blessing on their life in the Christian Church. They are: Madeline Benz, Kalina Berg, Jenna Burdeau, Allison Charniak, Ryker Crooks, Trentin Dauk, Sophia DeCaster, Tyler Everard, Paige Greely, Noah Jaime, Sydney Kohlbeck, Travis Kohlbeck, Hailey Krahn, Marie Kraning, Parker Kocian, Jonah Kochaver, Luke LaFond, Lauren LeClair, Kellan Lynch, Mason Matuszak, Mitch Martinson, Olivia Nelson, Macallister Radtke, Austin Rowell, Payton Schilz, Hayley Seiltz, Thomas Shaw, Lucas Thibert, Grace Thomas, Kathryn Thomas, Paige Vanderveren, Olivia Williquette, Marisa Wilinski

Thank You Guides We would like to thank the wonderful people who helped make confirmation classes and activities possible this last year. Without them the Confirmation program would not be possible. This year’s Confirmation Guides were: Second Year Guides – Jean Kraning, Ann Nelson, Julia Thomas, Erin DeGroot, Angela & Michael Kochaver, Beth & Geraldo Jaime, Melissa & Andy Lynch, Melissa Martinson, Jim LaFond.

First Year Guides –

Terry Viegut, Eli Harris, Kelly Agen, Jill Mantai, Janelle Bailey, Amy Bjorklund, Colleen Lindley, Michele Otradovec, Mike & Peggy Pickett, Paul Kamke, Ruth Bloesl, Laura Ruotsala, Blaine Brunette, Jeff Schouten

Summer weekends can be very busy. When you can’t be here on Sunday, plan ahead. Join us Thursday Evening at 7:00. Summer worship can be refreshing and re-creating on a Thursday evening, too!

The date for the next Super Council/Committee night will be Tuesday, August 14th. We ask all Council members, committee members and potential committee members to mark your calendars!

Congratulations Confirmands

Endowment Fund… Giving to Others The Endowment Fund Commit-tee is pleased to announce that the Endowment Fund will be distributing $2,353.35 in grants for the year 2018.

We are seeking input from you…If you know of a ministry within our community that would benefit from a grant, please contact the church office.

The Endowment Fund was established to provide an opportunity and means for the congregation to expand mission and ministry outreach beyond normal budgeted items.

Thanks to your support, our Fund is growing. If you would like more information on the Fund, please pick up the Endowment Fund trifold on the table in the gathering area, or contact the church office.

I do benefits for all religions. I'd hate to blow the here- after on a technicality. -Bob Hope

Believe it or not, worship attendance often declines in the summertime. (Yes, it’s really true!) And, believe it or not, the amount of offering money received often declines as well.

The pre-addressed envelope in your envelope pack can help you support your church when you can’t be here to worship.

Another easy way to help support the ministry of your church during the sum-mer is through the “Simply Giving” program. Your gifts can be automatically transferred to Peace from your checking or savings account. Forms can be found in the Gathering Space, or call the church office and a form will be mailed to you. If you are interested in this convenient way to “give”, fill out the form, attach a voided check or deposit slip, and drop it off in the church office.

You can also sign-up online for direct deposit on our website – www. peacelc.org

You can use “Simply Giving” for your offering for General Fund gifts and for the Building Fund. Thank you for your gifts to God through Peace Church.

AND . . . don’t forget the “Giving Kiosk”. You can use it and your credit and/or debit card to share your gifts with God through Peace. Its’ also possible to sign up to use your talents in various “serving” situations using the Kiosk!

Summer Ministry Gifts are Important

Summer Local & Word-wide Giving Opportunities The Hunger Carts are ALWAYS in the south entryways. Summer is a critical time for the Pulaski Area Food Pantry. Your gifts of nonperishable food will make a difference. Bring a gift to help the hungry when you

come to worship.

Hunger is a problem in our world each and every day. You can help the hungry by using the Hunger Box in the Gathering Space near the office door to share your gifts of money. You’ll also find Hunger Envelopes on

the tables in the Gathering Space, too.

The TPC Congregation will be remembered on June 21 & 24 with a special offering. All money not in offering envelopes will be sent to help them in their ministry in Africa.

Sunday School Offering Envelopes can be used throughout the summer. Money received in Sunday envelopes will be sent to help Sunday School kids in Liberia.

You can help others see and hear. There is a container on the cupboard near Pastor Stuart and Nurse Marsha’s offices for the eyeglasses and hearing aids you are no longer using. Bring them here and the Lion’s Club will make sure they are put to use by those

who need them.

Causely June This June, every 6 check-ins at Peace Lutheran Church will provide a brick to build a school. We’re working with Causely and buildOn to make it happen. You can add #bricks4schools when you check in to promote the cause. For more information about this month’s mission, check out www.buildon.org.

Thank You Notes

I might live 1,729 miles away. I have been away from home for 10 years and have moved 12 times now, but Peace Lutheran has kept up with my many addresses and sent small things with lots of meaning.

Nothing better than getting mail call and finding a card from someone who you might not know but they are thinking of you. That card and the many treats I have received over the years, remind me that what I am doing is the job for me. Allows me to defend kind, loving and caring people to keep them going with their daily lives in this great country we call America. Here we can believe what we want to believe. Peace Lutheran has been a great supporter in my crazy life, supported me in the darkest days, bringing light to the other end.

Thank you Peace Lutheran Church.

God bless,

Shannell Styczynski, Sgt., US Marine Corps

Thanks For Our Beautiful Yard!

Peace Lutheran is blessed with a lovely building and beautiful landscaping. We wish to thank the workers who were involved in our Spring Clean-Up. Thanks guys! Your hard work is a gift to us all.

Have You Noticed Our Beautiful Church Pews?

Our Building Manager (Bob DeBroux) and his spouse, Rosie, have put in many extra hours to beautify our church pews. They were looking a little worn. They look fresh and beautiful again. Thanks Bob and Rosie!

Sunday School Update Welcome to the beginning of summer! Have fun and stay safe.

To celebrate a great Sunday School year, we held a Porkie/Pancake breakfast for all students and their families.

We served just over 175 people! Awesome job to the Scanlan family for organizing and preparing the food along

with ALL the wonderful volunteers who helped out. Everything runs better with volunteers!

As a “great year” gift, each SS student received a messenger bag printed with the Peace Lutheran name and logo.

I would like to thank Robin Wasielewski and Wonder Sign for printing them for us. They look amazing. If your

child has not yet received one, there are some available in the gathering space at church office.

If anyone has any comments, praise or concerns about the Sunday School program, please feel free to email the church office or Laura Ruotsala at [email protected]. If you would like to be a member of the Steering Committee or be a teacher, helper or substitute next year, please

Upcoming events

June 23rd - 30th - Youth Mission Trip to Logan WV

We are taking the summer off from our High School MERGE gatherings. We’ll begin again in August!

Family Devotion

Make sure during the busy Summer times for all of us with activities and sports and everything else to make time to eat together, pray together and check in with each other!

Family Movie

The Legend of the Guardians, The Owls of Ga’hoole is a really great movie! It has themes of good vs evil, trust, growth, loyalty, sacrifice and love.

A Book to Read with Your Children

The books series “the Magic TreeHouse” is a great set of stories to read aloud with your young one. The main characters go to all sorts of interesting places and times.

Youth & Family Ministry Summer is again upon us and along with that comes the busy-ness of activities, sports, camps, vacations and all sorts of other fun and good things. It is a good time to connect with each other as a family. To spend time with each other in very meaningful ways. But it’s also a time when, for many of us, we neglect to connect with each other in worship. I completely understand the tendency to skip Sunday morning things because of all of the other things we could do. But worshiping together is an essential part of what it means to be a person (and a family) of faith. I would hope that you would make the time to come to Peace (or wherever you are!) and worship Jesus in song, confession & forgiveness, in hearing God’s word read and preached. It’s the best to have it first hand… to be present. But it you can’t then there are other options:

Download a Bible app and read some of the stories (your favorites) as a family.

On your music apps, get worship songs or other songs that have deep spiritual meaning for you and play them when you’re together.

Download the Peace app and you can listen to the sermons.

Check out our Youtube channel and you can watch the sermons and worship.

You can google “Spiritual questions” and get together and talk about what you think about them.

Make time during the summer to not only enhance your own abilities and experiences, but also to give back to others in need. There are so many opportunities. If you can’t make it worship with us, try some of these things.

It’s important to remember that we are God’s people, wherever we are and whatever we are doing. So make choices this summer (and always) to remember that and to reconnect with the God who loves you always.

~Pastor Stuart

Peace Softball Everyone is welcome to join Peace Lutheran Softball or come cheer the team on! There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the Gathering Space. From the Desk of Nurse Marsha

HAPPY SUMMER! This month I’d like to focus on respecting the sun’s rays and how to prevent SKIN CANCER, namely, MELONOMA.

Some examples of the “Safe-Sun Guidelines” are:

*Avoid the sun as much as possible especially be-tween 10 am and 2 pm. The sun during these hours can do the most damage to your skin, such as wrinkles, skin cancer and other skin problems. DON’T USE BABY OIL to try and get a tan!

*Slather on sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or MORE. Use even on cloudy days be-cause the sun can still damage your skin! Apply the sunscreen GENEROUSLY to your skin and rub it in well. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out into the sun. Check to see if it’s waterproof and fol-low the directions for reapplying the sunscreen. Ap-ply everywhere the sun’s rays can touch you, includ-ing your ears, back of your neck and tops of your feet/toes.

*Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts and pants. In Australia, they have the slogan “Slip, Slap, Slop.” Slip on a long-sleeved shirt, slap on a hat, and slop on the SPF.

*Check your skin over thoroughly on a monthly basis or more often as needed. Stand in front of a full-length mirror holding another small mirror and check every inch of your skin including the bottoms of your feet, or see a dermatolo-gist.

Follow this rule in checking a mole: ABCDE.

A. Asymmetry of the mole (it should be ROUND).

B. Border. Is it irregular?

C. Change in color. Is it darker than usual, or blue, green, red, pink, purple, or gray?

D. Diameter of the mole. Has it changed? Is it larger?

E. Elevation of the mole. Is it above the skin, with a rough sur-face?

*If the answer to one or more of these above questions is “YES” please see your Health Care Provider or Dermatologist to have your mole and/or skin assessed.

Please read 1 Corinthians 6:20:

You were bought with a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.

Have a fun and blessed SUMMER!

Katie’s Circle will gather on Tuesday, June 12th, at 1 pm in the fellowship hall. Our hostesses this month are Sue Snellenberger and Renee Stieg. The study can be found in the June issue of the Gather magazine on pages 20 – 23. This month’s study is titled “Let us pray—Session one: The paradoxes of prayer” and the Bible text is 1 Samuel 12: 12-23.

We will discuss two main ideas: One is: Allegiance. Anything we consider to be most important is our god; it’s the thing or the person to which we give our loyalty and our allegiance. Two is: Prayers that feel unheard. We will consider those who have suffered, not least of all because their prayers have appeared to have gone unheard.

Please join us. This promises to be an interesting discussion. Time spent with other Christian women is always refreshing and uplifting.

There are copies of the Gather Magazine available in the gathering space. If none are available, contact Elizabeth Lawler (621-8274) for a copy. If you would like to order a subscription the contact information is as follows: 844-409-0576 (toll free); Gather Subscription Order Center, PO Box 336, Congers, NY 10920-0336; or [email protected]. The cost is still the same – 1 year/10 issues $19.95.

The suggested personal care kit item is a towel.

Book Review

THE MEMORY OF YOU

The Memory of You by Catherine West is a very moving story. It is the story of Natalie Mitchell and Tanner Collins. Natalie decides to return to the family-owned winery in Sonoma after learning that her grandfather suffered a heart attack. There Natalie discovers that Tanner is running the winery. Natalie and Tanner knew one another as children but now are both different people. Natalie is still dealing with the loss of her twin sister. Tanner needs to work on letting his sister go. Both learn to rely on God for grace and understanding. Through that grace they are able to forgive one another and their respective family members.

THE MEMORY OF YOU is a book that is difficult to put down. It is very easy to feel for the characters in the story. It can be found in the fiction section of the library. Check it out, grab a box of tissues, and en-joy!

Personal Care Kits

Katie’s Circle will continue to collect items for LWR Personal Care Kits with the goal to assemble 100 kits by October, 2018. Personal Care Kits are shared with people who have lost everything from a natural disaster or life-threatening violence. Give hope through a bar of soap. So far we have assembled 32 kits. Each kit includes:

• One light- or medium-weight bath-size towel (approx. 52” X 27”), dark color recommended

• Two bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in original wrapping

• One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging

• One sturdy wide tooth comb

• One metal nail clippers

At this time we are in need of towels. Please place donated items in the LWR basket in the gathering area. Your contributions to this mission project are greatly appreciated!
