WORSHIP IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL

Begins on SUNDAY, JUNE 3

One service at 10:00 a.m.

Our summer worship theme … STORIES MY SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER TOLD ME

Let’s take a look back at the biblical stories that we first heard as little children sitting in a circle in our Sunday School class. Our teacher may have astonished us with stories about snakes offering apples, animals squeezed into a boat, toppling towers, camping with rock pillows, sibling rivalry gone wild, fantastical dreams, and angel wrestling. This summer, we will revisit the stories of Genesis and find new insights that apply to our lives today.

You didn’t go to Sunday School as a child? Now is your chance to hear the stories for the first time!

June 3 - Genesis 1: “What God Can Do with Chaos” June 10 - Genesis 3: “Hiding from God?” June 17 - Genesis 4: “Raising Cain”

June 24 - Genesis 9: “The Rainbow Connection”

Following the service on June 3 … Our Capital Campaign Committee and Building Utilization Committee will present a brief update of our progress in the construction of our new Welcome Corridor. Refreshments will follow!

When you arrive for worship, people and signs will direct you.

You may enter the Fellowship Hall through the front doors (to the left as you face the front of the building) or the back doors (by the kitchen). Additional accessible parking spaces will be designated at the back of the building for easier access to the back door. A “drop-off” spot will be set up at the overhang outside the back door. To reduce traffic congestion, all cars driving to the back of the building will be directed in a clockwise direction. Drive to the back of the facility by passing the Fellowship Hall and return to the front by driving past the sanctuary. The sanctuary, parlor, coffee room, office, front bathrooms, and preschool will not be accessible. The doors to the sanctuary and office foyer will be locked.

The Nursery will be in its usual place.

Kellie and her friends will welcome our littlest ones to their familiar playroom during the worship services.

Sunday School and Christian Education Programs will be on Summer vacation. Godly Play will continue through June during the 10:00 a.m. worship service.

First Sunday Mission Support Continues.

On the first Sundays of the month, we will continue to collect non-perishable food for Bainbridge Community Center Food Pantry and contributions for 5¢-a-Meal. Fairly Traded coffee and chocolate will continue to be on sale on the first Sunday of the month.

ELDER APPRECIATION

Sunday, June 10

Jesus is our model for servant leadership and, of course, our church is full of good and faithful servants. During our June 10 worship service, we will thank the faithful servants who have completed their terms as active

Elders serving on our Session. Linda Bollinger served as the moderator of our Staff Relations Ministry Team at a time when diligent work was completed on church policies, including the Child Protection Policy, Flexible Spending Account Plan, and the Sexual Misconduct Policy. Under her leadership, the team also made good progress on updating our Personnel Policy and Manual. Becky Bullock can be seen at work each Wednesday evening, hosting the dinner and directing us as we pick up our meals. However, there is much more to Becky than Wednesday Night Dinner. She served as the moderator of the Fellowship Ministry Team and guided the team in planning ways for us to gather as a family and share the joy of being together. Most recently, she has been busy preparing signs to help us find

our way around during the upcoming construction. Tom Hephner began his service on Session by moderating the Adult Education Committee. He then engaged in the ministries of the Stewardship and Communications Ministry Teams. Thanks, Tom, for helping us grow in our knowledge and faith, generosity and commitment, as well as letting the community know about the exciting ministries of our church family. Linda Johnston stepped in for one year to fill an incomplete term and, most importantly, to lead our Church and Society Ministry Team at a time when we actively engaged in Christ’s mission when some of our established outreach partners were changing their mission emphasis and, thereby, redefining our involvement. Linda also set up clear formats for tracking our benevolence contributions. Terry Oggel completes his term on Session by serving on the Worship Ministry Team during this time as we prepare to move worship to the Fellowship Hall. Terry has also served on the Church and Society Ministry Team as well as the Stewardship Ministry Team. In January, the Session elected him as the Vice President of Bon Air Presbyterian Church Corporation. Phyllis Smith has served as the moderator of our Congregational Care Ministry Team. During her tenure, we offered a discussion series for caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s Disease and instigated our “Faith Wednesday” encouraging us all to pray together for our church during this time of change. The team has shared the love of Christ with those who were grieving the loss of loved ones, those who were ill or injured, as well as their families.

THANK GOD FOR YOU ALL!

ORDINATION and INSTALLATION SERVICE

Sunday, June 10

Join us as we ordain and install new elders for service on our Session, including:

Vicki Callear, Alisha Gallini, Mitzi Humphrey, Barbara Jacocks, Mitch Olsen, Bill Perko, John Rupp, Cindy Wright. Continuing to serve on the Session are: Irene

Caperton, Carolyn Carper, Darleen Cavin, Mark Fagerburg, Claude Foster, Stephen

Galyen, Pam Hinterlong, Liz Little, Bruce Miller, Nora Narum, Nancy Peace, Mindy

Peters, Darin Smouse, and Kaete Unterzuber. We certainly have a strong and dedicated leadership team for the coming year of mission and ministry together!

Ministers of the Month

One of the most challenging moves being made in preparation for our construction of the Welcome Corridor is the Church Office. Not only are there files to be culled, shredded, and packed … not only is there very heavy and awkward furniture to be moved … the phones, computer, internet router, copier, and various other office equipment must be disconnected and reinstalled in the new temporary office. It is a huge job. Who would possibly take it on?

Although there are about ten people working on this project, Alisha Gallini, Bill

Perko, Erick Kasten, and Pete Gallini have been completing most of the “hands on” work. They have worked into the night, researching needs, developing plans, gathering supplies and equipment, pulling wire and cables, testing connections, etc. etc.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to

this project. Thanks especially to Alisha, Bill,

Erick, and Pete. Thanks to Brenda and the

office volunteers who have been working to get

the office ready for the big move.

THANK YOU to the acolytes who served in May: Rachel Peace, Katie Smouse, Mitch Pearcy, and Sara Hinterlong were

candle-lighters, and Kate Hurlbert served as cross-bearer. The adult helper was Pam Hinterlong.

On Sunday, June 3, the service will be at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. This is the last Sunday we will have acolytes until the sanctuary is available in the fall. The cross-bearer that day will be Jillian Peace and the candle-lighter will be Rachel Peace.

Thanks to all who help make this ministry possible at BAPC – youth, parents, and adult helper volunteers!

Justice…..demands RISC!

On April 30, 73 from Bon Air Presbyterian Church attended the Annual RISC Nehemiah Action along with more than 800 folks from our 22 member congregations….and through the power of organized people, we achieved: ♦ Introductory trauma-informed care training for all 4,000 Chesterfield County Public School staff before the first day of school in Fall 2018;

♦ Partnership with several faith and business leaders in Henrico to continue pressing for all East End children to read;

♦ Commitment from Richmond’s new Superintendent Kamras to research and discuss next steps for a pilot of proven program Reading Mastery in Fall 2018.

We have much to celebrate this year! Please join us as we gather with all of the RISC congregations on Monday, June 11, 2018 for a potluck dinner at 6:30PM, First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond, VA 23226. We will be carpooling for those of you who are interested leaving our church at

6:15 PM. Please sign up on the bulletin board outside the Fellowship Hall.

Letter from RICHMOND PEACE EDUCATION CENTER (RPEC)

We are tremendously grateful to Bon Air Presbyterian Church for its grant of $275.00. These funds will make so much possible.

Your support will enable the Richmond Peace Education Center to continue and expand our youth peace programs and our work for global peace and racial justice. We expect RPEC programs to reach many thousands of people in 2018 thanks to your support.

For example, with your support we will train and prepare a group of Richmond area teenagers to be youth peace leaders. After they receive training, these teen leaders will teach other children and teens healthy conflict resolution skills, leading workshops in community centers, after-school programs, and public and private schools. They will teach effective anger management, communication, and conflict resolution skills to Richmond area youth who are most in need.

This program will have a dual impact. First the teen leaders benefit from basic and advanced conflict resolution training and receive ongoing mentorship as they co-lead programs under adult supervision. Second, a much larger group of area youth (age 6 through 18) will gain anger management, communication and conflict resolution skills from the teen co-led programs.

In the words of our teen peace leaders… “I’ve gained an appreciation for the value of diversity in addressing problems.” “I’ve learned how to resolve conflict without fighting.” “I’ve learned how to work together and listen to other people’s point of view.” “I have more confidence about working with groups.”

In addition, the Peace Center will always remain a strong voice for peace and justice, and be an advocate for a more inclusive community.

Friends, we are truly grateful for your trust and belief in all of our work for peace!

Many thanks, Adria Scharf, Director
