Grace and peace to you, sisters and brothers,

In Adult Sunday School over the past few months we have been studying Luther’s Small Catechism. During this time, I have also had questions about what we as Lutheran Christians believe. I thought it would be good to share with you over the next four months the basics of our faith understanding. We will begin with the center of our faith, Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ: As a person, Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew who lived and died in the first century, in biblical Israel under Roman rule in a province the Romans called Palestine. He spent his adult life in ministry with his disciples, traveling around the region, teaching about God, and spreading a message of God’s love, peace, hope and forgiveness. He healed the sick and fed the hungry. He gathered many followers who were passionate about his teachings. As his following grew, some of the religious leaders became more and more distrustful and angry with him, until he was eventually turned over to the Roman government by Judas, one of his own disciples. The Roman governor Pontius Pilate then sentenced him to execution. He died by being nailed to a cross in the outskirts of the city of Jerusalem.

But death did not contain him. On the third day after his crucifixion, the day we call Easter, Jesus appeared among his followers as the risen, living Lord. He continued to teach, spreading the Good News, sharing the story of his life and resurrection to people here on earth for forty days before returning to heaven. The prophets of the Old Testament of the Bible proclaimed Jesus coming into the world. His story and teachings are depicted in the New Testament of the Bible.

As Christians, we believe that Christ lives among us today by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, present when the Good News is preached and the sacraments are administered.

As Lutherans, we are guided theologically by principles of Luther’s theological teachings, such as Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone. These comprise the very essence of Lutheranism:

• We are saved by the grace of God alone -- not by anything we do; • Our salvation is through faith alone -- a confident trust in God, who in Christ promises us

forgiveness, life and salvation; and • The Bible is the norm for faith and life -- the true standard by which teachings and doctrines

are to be judged.

Justification by grace through faith for Christ’s sake: This, for Lutherans, is the heart of the gospel. Stated concisely in the fourth article of the Augsburg Confession, it’s so central that it has been called “the article by which the church stands or falls.”

Relying on Paul’s letters to the Romans, to the Ephesians, and to the Galatians, Luther insisted that faith is key. His understanding of faith isn’t primarily intellectual (having the right knowledge about God) or emotional (how hard or how sincerely one believes). Instead, faith is relational: It’s a form of trust. We are justified through faith because faith alone trusts God’s promise of forgiveness for Christ’s sake. We have faith/trust in God because God is Faithful and Trustworthy. Thus, our faith itself is a gift from God and not our work.

Page 3: June 2018 Beacon · Justification by grace through faith for Christ’s sake: This, for Lutherans, is the heart of the gospel. Stated concisely in the fourth article of the Augsburg

Law and gospel: Lutherans have a distinctive way of reading the Scriptures, based on Luther’s and Paul’s insight that God’s word comes to us in two forms—law and gospel. The law, as command, tells people what they should do. The gospel, as promise, tells us what God in Christ is doing and has already done for us.

God’s law functions in several ways: It structures human life by protecting and promoting good and limiting and punishing wrong. The law also functions theologically, as a mirror, or as a doctor’s diagnosis, to show us our sinfulness and our need for God’s grace in Christ.

Because we are sinners, God’s law always accuses us; only the gospel frees us. As Luther puts it: “The law says, ‘do this,’ and it is never done. Grace says, ‘believe in this,’ and everything is already done.” Often daily we are battered by the law and our failure to “keep” it. So we proclaim the Gospel of life and forgiveness. We know the law all too well, but we need to hear of God’s grace and love found in the Gospel.

Living a Christian life: Because of Jesus Christ, we believe that Christians are called and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live our lives in service to the world. Through acts of love and justice, worship and witness, we share God’s boundless love with the world. We, ourselves, become vessels of God’s grace for others through our serving them.

If you would like to discuss any of these topics further I would love to visit with you. Next month we will talk about Means of grace, theology of the cross, being saint and sinner, and vocation. May God bless and guide us.

In Christ’s Love and Grace,

Pastor Tim

HAVE YOU HEARD THE NEWS ?? We did it. Between the Sunday School offering and kind donations by our members, we raised 2500 dollars to purchase a well through ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Response. That means as many as 500 families can now gain access to clean, safe water. We talked weekly in Sunday School about how important water is in our lives. Together, we have changed the lives of many people. For that we can only give thanks to God for his work through us to make a difference in the lives of those in need. Many thanks to all that contributed to this project.

NEW UPDATE ON THE WATER PROJECT Our High Schoolers will be taking our 2500 dollars to the National Youth Gathering where our gift will be matched dollar for dollar. So through the giving of our Sunday School Students and all of you that helped we will give a water system to two communities.

A Note from the Nurse:

How to Remove a Tick

Warmer weather has arrived and as we are outside more, we have an increased chance of being bitten by ticks. There are several different kinds of ticks. In this area, we need to be concerned about deer ticks that carry Lyme disease, American dog tick or wood tick that carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia, and the Lone Star Tick that carry Tularemia and Ehrlichia type illness.

What should you do if you find a tick on your skin? • Don’t panic! • Use a fine tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin surface as possible. • Pull backward gently but firmly, using an even steady pressure. Do not jerk or twist the tick. Do not be

concerned if the tick head separates from the body during removal as it is the tick body that contains the infected fluid.

• Do not squeeze, crush or puncture the body of the tick, since its fluids may contain the infectious organisms that could seep into the wound.

• Do not use heat or a strong-smelling substance to try to get the tick to back out of the skin. This may cause the tick to inject infected fluid into the wound.

• After removing the tick, clean the area with and antiseptic (alcohol or peroxide) immediately. • Tape the tick to a piece of paper and notify your health care provider. Ask to have the tick tested and ask if you

need antibiotics to prevent illness.

Tick bite prevention tips for patients • Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.• Walk in the center of trails.• Use repellent that contains 20 percent or more DEET, picaridin or IR3535 on exposed skin for protection that lasts several hours for adults. •Always follow product instructions. The length of time that DEET will provide protection depends on the concentration. In other words, a higher percentage of DEET does not provide better protection, just longer protection. Thirty percent DEET has been found to be safe for adults. DEET is not recommended for use on children under 2 month of age; most experts agree it is safe to apply insect repellent with low concentrations of DEET to children over 2 months of age avoiding hands, eyes and mouth. The safest approach for infants and children under 2 years is to minimize exposure to insects, use insect repellents that have a DEET concentration of 10% or less, and properly follow the manufacturer’s label directions for application.

•Use products that contain permethrin on clothing. Treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents with products containing 0.5 percent permethrin. It remains protective through several washings. Pre-treated clothing is available and may be protective longer.

Have a safe and healthy summer enjoying the beauty of the season God has provided for us.
