Wild World: CoralAlthough various corals look like plants,
these ocean occupants are actuallyanimals. Tiny creatures called polyps, which are related to jellyfish and seaanemones, build reef systems by attachingto a rock or the ocean floor, then clonethemselves over and over to create a largecolony. Polyps are translucent, but theyhost different types of algae that give coralreefs their vibrant colors. Since algaereceive energy from the sun, reefs arefound close to the water’s surface, sharingnutrients with the algae. Coral polyps alsohave stinging tentacles that they extend atnight to catch zooplankton and small fish tofeed on. Coral reefs help protect coastlinesand provide habitats for thousands ofmarine species.
