Nobles All – Greetings
The 112th Edition of the Shrine Circus is now history. We endured everything that Mother Nature had to throw at us. Opening the show on Thursday at 76o to going in to the weekend with 2.25” of rain and finally waking up on Sunday morning to ¼” of ice covering everything. The first five (5) shows opened to 5-12% crowd capacity, Friday night and Saturday we opened to 60% capacity, which lifted our spirits. The last five (5) shows, the circus played to near or at capacity attendance. With the weather conditions that we had, it was truly a blessing. I cannot begin to thank everybody that were involved in making the 2018 Shrine Circus a success. To call out individuals would be wrong on my part, as I would surely miss somebody. Therefore, to EVERYBODY that donated time for the Shrine Circus, THANK YOU. It is my pleasure to announce to all that for the first time in several years, the Shrine Circus had a positive Cash Flow. After expenses, we will realize a profit of approximately $30k.
Remarks by Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, So, here are the 10 lessons I learned from basic SEAL training that hopefully will be of value to you as you move forward in life.
#2 - During SEAL training the students are broken down into boat crews. Each crew is seven students — three on each side of a small rubber boat and one coxswain to help guide the dingy. Every day your boat crew forms up on the beach and is instructed to get through the surf zone and paddle several miles down the coast. In the winter, the surf off San Diego can get to be 8 to 10 feet high and it is exceedingly difficult to paddle through the plunging surf unless everyone digs in. Every paddle must be synchronized to the stroke count of the coxswain. Everyone must exert equal effort or the boat will turn against the wave and be unceremoniously tossed back on the beach.
For the boat to make it to its destination, everyone must paddle. You can't change the world alone — you will need some help — and to truly get from your starting point to your destination takes friends, colleagues, the good will of strangers and a strong coxswain to guide them.
If you want to change the world, find someone to help you paddle.

Months back, we discussed an opportunity for more civic parade visibility promoting Mighty Moslem while being inclusive to family involvement.
With the approval from our Imperial Sir- Larry Leib, we are launching the first Parading Shrine Dog Club and we now have a name!
Our Pooch Patrol is real, with our lead dog- Rick Gaines at the helm this will become a presence on the street that can bring Nobles, Ladies, Children, and Dogs together for promoting our Fraternity/Philanthropy!
We will have bibs in production as large and small, have your leash, scooper, and “baggy” ready. Stay tuned as to which parades we are participating in through our Detroit Shriners Now email group.

Once our Oriental Guide- Mike Zelmanski is back in the saddle, he will take over the communication for these 2018 concert events.
Note- We would prefer recommended friends of Nobles for the Sept.1st concert, as we will need a strong showing of volunteers for the Michigan Sate Fair/Shrine Circus that Labor Day weekend. Details forthcoming on that.

It was an honor for Daughters of the Nile to do a Memorial Service for our Past Queen Welda Felber. She became a member of Ahmose Temple in 1966 and was Queen thirty-two years ago in 1986. She will truly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
In June our Day Trippers will be going to Eastern Market at 11:00 A.M. and then on to Sindbad’s for lunch at 1:00 P.M. Family and friends are always welcome. In July Day Trippers will go on the Diamond Jack down the Detroit River past Bob-Lo and then have dinner at Portofinos in Wyandotte. Check with JoEtte Morris at 734-467-9298 for dates and details.
Eight members of our Temple will be attending the 102nd Supreme Session from June 24th -28th in Cincinnati, Ohio. We will have the opportunity to tour the Shriners Hospital while we are there.
Put September 6, 2018 on your calendar for the annual visit of our Supreme Queen. The Ceremonial will begin at 1:00 P.M. with the banquet at 4:00 P.M. Plan to come and enjoy the afternoon with us.

I would like to share our year Hospital Report, We donated hand made items $20,436, squeezed for table/trays, book marks and candy cane climbers to the tune of $6,842. Surgical pillows sent to Cincinnati Hospital $686. Our Huron Valley Nile Club and the November Toy Walk $2,567. In total our Ladies have contributed to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati, Chicago and Erie
$30,532. We also passed the basket during one of our meetings and contributed $255 to the Hospital in Mexico City. Congratulations Past Queen Victoria Hansen and the Daughters of the Nile for a very successful Year.
Mark your calendars for these special activities. The Supreme Queen will visit Ahmose Temple Thursday September 6th. Ceremonial at 1pm and the Banquet at 4pm. in the Grand Ballroom. Our Annual Card Party to benefit theConvalescent Relief Fund for Shriners Hospitals is on Sunday September 9th at the Royal Oak Masonic Temple. Lunch begins at 1 pm. with cards and raffles to follow. Come join us for the afternoon. We will have our Christmas Tea, December 8th at the Shrine Center in the Nobles' Lounge. These are just a few of our up coming events.

The following is from Shriners International Protocol.
Salaam (USED IN TILED MEETINGS ONLY)
A Noble addressing the potentate while he is presiding in the East should always give the salaam. The potentate gives the sign of the Order in return the does not salaam.
The potentate and his divan should always salaam when receiving the Imperial Potentate or any other Imperial officer. The Imperial officer gives the sign of the Order in return and does not salaam.
The Salaam is given by the leader of a uniformed unit that is performing for the potentate, and the potentate gives the sign of the Order in return. No other unit member salaams.
As an Imperial officer or temple potentate proceeds through an honor guard, only the first rank on either of the of the aisle salaam in unison. The remainder of the honor guard stand at attention. The Imperial officer and temple potentate may or may not be escorted through the honor guard, depending upon the pleasure of either. The escort is always to the left of the officer.
Salutation.
An Imperial officer and all Past Imperial officers are always addressed “Imperial Sir.” A potentate or past potentate is always addressed “Illustrious Sir.” The prefix “past” should not be used when addressing a Past Imperial Potentate or past temple potentate. Members of the elective divan of a temple are addressed by the title of their office, or “Noble”.
A noble, when making a salutation at a Shrine meeting with an Imperial officer in attendance, should do so in the following Manner: “Imperial Sir, Illustrious Sirs, members of the divan and nobles.” If the Imperial Potentate and one or more Imperial officers, temple potentate, past potentates, divan, Grand Master, ladies and guest are in attendance, the noble would make the following salutation: “Imperial Sir (Imperial Potentate), Imperial Sirs, Illustrious Sir (Potentate), Illustrious Sirs (Past Potentates), members of the divan, Most Worshipful Grand Master, ladies and guests.”

LANCERSBy the time you are reading this, we will have already done at least 4 parades. I will give particulars in the July article on how the May and June parades went. I’m sure that they will have gone great and a good time was had by all, especially our newest members.
The Lancers would like to give a big “Thank You” to Eugene from the Lancer unit for donating all of the tickets for our Drone that will be raffled off at the Summer Sportsmans Raffle at the Shrine Center. Eugene also owns and operates the Downriver Safe and Lock, LLC business labeled on the back of our tickets.
The Lancers did a great job again at the circus collecting tickets, solving problems, ushering, passing out clown posters and programs, and making the general public feel good and happy about coming to the circus. It was a busy time and quite a few rain showers, but fun was had by all. I even spotted a member of the Divan looking a little like Jack Sparrow, the famous pirate. Thank you to all that showed up for even one show to work. Your time and dedication does not go unnoticed in Moslem. Hopefully you were able to attend the volunteer dinner at the Shrine for a nice meal with good friends.
Our next business meeting will be on Monday, July 2nd or 9th , at 7pm. We aren’t sure just yet so please stay tuned to which Monday it will be.
We are once again raffling off a drone at the Summer Sportsmans Raffle. It is the same YUNEEC- Typhoon 4K Quadcopter as we had in the past. It is a prize valued at $700. We now have tickets to sell, so please start spreading the news to your friends and family so we can sell as many tickets as possible prior to the raffle date. It comes with an aluminum rolling case with handle, stabilizer hand controller and extra batteries, which would cost an extra $200 normally. This is a great raffle prize, so please sell…. Sell….sell. See our Director if you need more tickets.

It has been a pretty calm month during April and the start of May. Thank you to all those that attended the Spring Ceremonial. We looked good and perhaps will have recruited a few more interested Shriners to join the Lancers.

Welcome new Nobles, as you will be receiving this Magazine for the first time! We all look forward to the articles and reports that are posted by the Divan,Units and Nobles every month.
New Nobles, please take time to read the various articles and remarks about our various activities, monthly reports, and the new activities and events taking place.
During your introduction to Moslem Shriners, you had the chance to sit in our Childcare Coach to hear about our Childcare program and the great things our hospitals do for children.
To gain more patients, we hold Outreach Clinics. Nobels set up at a location in a community with promotional material to inform the public of how we can help more kids needing medicl attention. Recently, our Blue Water Shrine Club hosted a clinic at the Port Huron YMCA on May 6th. Thank you Nobles for participating to promote what we do!
If you would like to become a Childcare driver, contact Pam York or me at the Shrine Center. You are always welcome to ride along on a trip to any of our hospitals that we service.

Orthopaedics Plastic Surgery/Cleft Lip and Palate Rehabilitation/Spinal Cord Injury
Brachial plexus palsy is a condition that affects roughly one in every 1,000 newborns. It occurs most commonly, though not exclusively, when the brachial plexus, a group of nerves around the shoulder, is affected during birth. Most children with brachial plexus palsy, which can cause difficulty with shoulder movement, do not need surgical intervention and can improve with the help of physical and occupational therapy. Early rehabilitation therapy can potentially prevent additional problems that can accompany brachial plexus palsy, such as trunk weakness and torticollis, a condition in which the neck muscles are twisted beyond their normal position. If the brachial plexus nerves are stretched, scarred or disconnected and surgical intervention is required, the specialists at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago perform surgery when the child is 6 to 10 months of age. The procedure includes removing scarred nerves and potentially performing a nerve transfer.
“The goal is for the patient’s arm to be as functional as possible,” said Sue Mukherjee, M.D., FRCPC, the medical director of the hospital’s specialty rehabilitation program. She hosts a clinic for children with brachial plexus palsy once a month. The rehab team at the Chicago Shriners Hospital works closely with the surgeons and Dr. Mukherjee to ensure that every facet of the child’s course of care is covered. After receiving treatment, children are followed until they are 3 or 4 years old to ensure that no further care for brachial plexus palsy is needed.

For those Shiners that are making the pilgrimage to Daytona in July, there are a number of events scheduled but the main one for us will be the pub crawl on July 14. If you plan on attending, please make sure that you register for the event before you go. There is no limitations on the number of people that can attend, so lets have the best turnout possible.
I have the okay from the Potentate that Shiners shirts are most welcome and that we will not run into the “brick wall” that we did last year.

A hearty congratulations to our Nobility for helping to welcome our 15 new Nobles and their Ladies into the Moslem Family! With the inclusion of our newest members, we have exceeded the Membership Recruitment Goal set by Imperial Potentate Gary Bergenske for 2018! (That still gives time to create more before Imperial Session in July.) Units and Clubs should be on the look out for the New Noble Class info to invite to meetings and events you may have. It is within your lot to make them feel welcome and to offer a chance to be an active part of our fraternity.

Unit Directors and Club Presidents shall be receiving a list of those Nobles in arrears. Those that are behind are technically not able to participate in Shrine functions and events until their dues are satisfied. As masonic Brothers first, our duty should be to address them if they are in need and aid them to make arrangements while keeping their dignity.
If you have a chance to visit the Shrine Temple, please have a look in the Nobles Lounge and view the “Moslem is Family” wall. You may find a few familiar faces hanging there! These photos are the result of our “Legacy Program”. 12 new family photos shall be added per the last ceremonial. If you have Family within the Shrine in past or present, we want to hear from you! Please contact Katie at the Shrine Office or myself to learn more. Each “Legacy” receives a certificate, a pin and a spot on our growing “Moslem is Family” wall of the Nobles Lounge.
