If you have a cookoff coming up in the month of AUGUST your cookoff information must be in the hands of the CASI Events Coordinator, Nancy Hewlett, by JUNE 15th to meet the cookoff adver-tising requirement.

The Board of Directors is extremely happy to present Ron Barnes as emcee for the 51st annual Terlingua International Chili Championship. The next, biggest chili party in the world occurs Saturday, November 4.

Our new announcer is a native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and an 11-year Air Force veteran. He has resided in Euless, Texas, since 1969, where he still lives with his wife, Jeri. Their daughter Shawna and son-in-law Landon are the parents of Ron’s two grandsons, Jacob and Noah.

Ron began cooking chili in March 1997 at the Bedford, Texas, American Legion ‘Cracked Back Chili Cookoff’ and has been going ever since. He credits Nick and Mikie McGarity and David “Budda” Manske as his chili mentors and

friends. Over the years, Ron has been extremely involved in the Cowtown Chili and Top of Texas Pods, and has held a variety of offices in both pods, including Pepper Popper and Great Pepper. He has also been a Regional Referee, area referee and head judge.

He is well known in the North Texas area as a go-to person for announcements and recently served as the emcee for the Annual Texas Men’s State Chili Championship in Corsicana, Texas.

Ron has some impressive cooking ac-complishments as well. He was back-to-back champion for the Cowtown Chili Pod CCO in 2007 and 2008. Also in 2008, he was the Top of Texas Pod Champion and the Virgin Island Champion – seems like that was a great year for

him. And he placed seventh at TICC in 2014.The task he is taking on as TICC emcee

requires organization, personality and stamina. The Board looked at all the requirements and has confidence that Ron will fill the position ad-mirably. He believes that placing at TICC gives him a deep appreciation of how those winners feel when their number is called.

“I’m very excited for this opportunity,” said Ron. “I can never replace Boomer…I can only be myself and hope to maintain the high stan-dards he has set.”

Ron brings his own brand of humor and professionalism to our proceedings, and we cer-tainly hope that you will take the time to visit with him when you get the chance.

It Won't Happen AgainAs the legendary UCLA basketball Coach John Wooden once proclaimed, “If

you are not making mistakes, then you are not doing anything. I am positive that a doer makes mistakes.” CASI has a long and rich history – one that is full of color-ful people, good chili, great friends, “doers” and, yes, even some mistakes.

Recently, I made a mistake. I sat down at the Finals table of an event that struggled getting judges, an event in which I had family competing. Section II.B.3 of the CASI rule book states, “Final judges must not be associated with any cook at that cookoff.”

I decided to sit on the Finals table at this cookoff solely to help them with a problem – the lack of judges. Hindsight being what it is, I shouldn’t have done it. I apologize to each and every member of CASI for not toeing the line, and for not setting a better example.

It wasn’t easy to use my article this month for a public apology to the entire organization. We have many exciting things going on, and a lot of important deadlines coming up. Instead, I felt it was more important to admit my mistake and assure the members of CASI that I will learn from this mistake going forward. Mistakes are meant for learning, not repeating, and this will definitely NOT be a mistake that I repeat.

IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN GETTINGYOUR TERLINGUA TRAILS AS USUAL...

IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS LOGGING IN, PLEASE CONTACT KEITH LONGABAUGH, MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR, FOR ASSISTANCE: [email protected], 972.841.1630, OR 608 ACORN ST, PILOT POINT TX 76258.

THE SECOND PROBLEM IS BOTH GOOD AND BAD. SIMPLY PUT, IT'S EF-FICIENCY. THE NEW(ISH) CASI MEMBER SYSTEM, OR CMS, DE-LIVERS REPORTS MORE QUICKLY AND EASILY, WHICH IS GOOD. BUT IF YOUR MEMBERSHIP EX-PIRES BEFORE THE 15TH OF THE MONTH AND ISN'T RENEWED BY THAT DATE, YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE MAILING LIST, WHICH IS BAD!

PLEASE HELP US TO HELP YOU GET YOUR TERLINGUA TRAILS ON TIME EVERY MONTH. CHECK YOUR INFO, MAKE SURE YOUR DUES ARE PAID, AND HOLLA IF YOU NEED HELP. THANKS SO MUCH!

WE HAVE HAD A FEW PROBLEMS WITH OUR MEMBERS NOT RECEIVING THEIR TERLINGUA TRAILS AS THEY EXPECTED.

AFTER INVESTIGATING THESE PROBLEMS, WE'VE IDENTIFIED A FEW AREAS WHERE ACCURATE INFORMATION IS CRUCIAL TO TIMELY DELIVERY OF THE NEWSLETTER.

FIRST, PLEASE LOG IN TO WWW.CASICHILI.NET AND MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PERSONAL INFOR-MATION IS ABSOLUTELY COR-RECT.

THE US POSTAL SERVICE IS GROWING INCREASINGLY PAR-TICULAR ABOUT THE FORMAT OF BULK MAIL ADDRESSES. EVEN A SLIGHT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR DELIVERY ADDRESS AND THE ADDRESS WE HAVE ON FILE FOR YOU COULD RESULT IN YOUR TRAILS ARRIVING LATE, VERY LATE, OR NOT AT ALL.

Pendery's DFW RegionalThe fourth annual Pendery’s DFW Regional Cookoff raised more than

$235,000, benefitting the Housing Crisis Center, the American Cancer So-ciety (Cattle Baron’s Ball & SMU Relay for Life), Crystal Charity Ball’s Children’s Charities (Autism Treatment Center, Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, Children’s Medical Center Foundation, Dallas Holocaust Museum, Hunger Busters, Presbyterian Communities and Services Foun-dation, Rainbow Days, Santa Clara of Assisi Catholic Academy) and the Assist the Officer Foundation. Other beneficiaries were the CASI Scholar-ship Program and Special Olympics of Texas.

It was the cookoff’s third year on the beautiful campus of Southern Methodist University in the heart of Dallas, TX. Although the morning started out very chilly and breezy, the afternoon proved to be perfect for chili judging and winning. There were so many judges this year, many were sadly turned away.

With the help of Jim Ezell and Nancy Hewlett, the CASI side of business ran flawlessly. This cookoff typically has some pretty tough competition, with many TICC winners entering. Congratulations to Greg Lindsey, Carol Rankin and Lisa Six for automatically qualifying for Terlingua 2017. Three generations of the Pendery family joined forces to help make this a success-ful year, and they all look forward to seeing you again next year.

The High Desert Pod of Sierra Vista, AZ presented three $1,000 scholarships to graduating Buena High School seniors at the West End Fair Chili Cookoff on Saturday, May 6. Joshua Caputo (L) will attend Northern Arizona University, majoring in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Applied Mathemat-ics. CORSICANA, TX – Wow, what a party we had at the 48th annual Texas Men’s State Championship, held at the Navarro County Expo Center. With just over five months to plan and put this great event together, it was a good time for all. We know we had a few problems, but we have addressed those issues, and we are already working on next year. We would like to thank all of you for your help and input to making this event a success.

We would like to thank all the sponsors that helped make this a successful event.A BIG thank you goes out to Dave Boone for that beautiful trophy. Special thanks to all of our teams: Registration, Tally, Judging, and Over the

Top Bloody Mary. Your efforts and coordination helped make the event a success. We have a few new events planned for next year, so watch for announcements on our website.

And congratulations to Buddy Brooks, the 48th Texas Men’s State champion. We had 119 cooks on Saturday. On Sunday, 61 CASI red entries and 15 green

entries insured a great chili weekend. We raised just over $25,000 for Special Olympics of Texas, and we’re aiming

for double that next year. The Special Olympics of Texas will be back, too, so come see us next for the 49th annual. We promise the 2018 Texas Men’s State will be bigger and better.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: First place chair & stove; a couple enjoys the live band; Bill Lester and friends rock out during Showmanship; Richard Knight, 7th place; Bruce Pinnell, Bloody Mary Presentation winner; David Sexton (R) presents an appreciation award to Dave Boone, TMS supporter. Houston Pod held its 46th annual cookoff at Trader’s

morning made-to-order om-elets for the cooks, juniors and beans cookoffs, Saturday night

potluck dinner, Sunday morning breakfast casserole competi-

tion and, of course, two days of chili turn-ins.

Donna Foley from Galveston had the lucky ticket and is the 2017 Houston Pod champion.

pin 4th, Beth Baxter 5th, Fortino Quintanilla 6th, Greg Lindsey

7th, Jerry Hunt 8th, Scott Spen-cer 9th and Maxine Reed 10th.

Maxine also won first place beans. The Soggy Bottom Chili Boys took first in show. Second

place was Alamo Chili, and Kickin’ Chili came in third.

ELGIN, AZ – The beautiful Kief-Joshua Vineyard was the venue for the 5th annual Wine Festival and Chili Cookoff. The activi-ties began Friday evening with dinner for the cooks on the patio of the winery. Provided mostly by Kief, dinner was fantastic, with the perfect wine pairing.

The Arizona Biscuits and Gravy cham-pionship on Saturday morning was the best breakfast around for only a dollar, and Tom Edwards walked away with the trophy.

The day just got better with the Chili and People’s Choice competitions. Carlton Johnson from Glendale, AZ, won People’s Choice for the third year in a row. Looks like the rest of us need to “go green.”

The Second Day Cookoff also featured a Salsa competition that has drawn the in-terest of some of the local restaurants and chefs. So now, the challenge is on for next year when we chili cooks will pull out our salsa recipes and prove that we not only cook chili – we can make salsa, too. Gotta love competition!

The High Desert Pod was honored and so happy to have the TICC Champion, Lisa Stone and all the Chili Con Carnies join us for the two-day event. We appreciate so much that they made the trip, and we hope that they will all join us again next year. We appreciate all our out-of-town and out-of-state cooks.

We raised over $3,000 for the Mountain Empire Rotary Club. They are building a park and playground in Sonoita.

Everyone is doing a great job creating cookoffs online! There are only a couple of things I need to call to your attention.

When you create a cookoff and you don’t request a box of Trails, cup tickets, or a rule book, you will not receive a packet of forms by regular mail. Your forms will be included in your approval email as a .PDF file. Please print out the forms, and fill in your cookoff date and the cookoff number shown on the approval email.

Also, some events are being entered twice. It seems that some entries encounter an error message after hitting the ‘sub-mit’ button, leading users to believe that their entries have been rejected. If this happens to you, please look at the events list before trying to re-enter your cookoff. Please enter your cookoff a second time ONLY if it does not appear in the events list. Thank you, everyone, for working so hard and adjusting to the CMS so wonderfully. I appreciate your help. If you have a cookoff coming up in the month of AUGUST, your cookoff information must be to me no later than JUNE 15th to meet the cookoff advertising requirement. You may enter your information at www.casichili.net or you can complete the Upcoming Cookoff Information form found in the back of the Trails and send it by mail to me at CASI Events, 802 Horizon Dr, Murphy TX 75094, by fax to 972.578.9232, or by email to [email protected]. If you have any questions you can reach me at 214.802.8194.

Free Quarter-Page Ad to CASI Pods, State, Regional and International Opens

As a CASI Pod you are required to put on a pod cookoff once a year. To help you advertise your pod cookoff we allow each pod to place one quarter-page ad in the Terlingua Trails each year, free of charge. This ad should run the month before your cookoff occurs. Should you decide that you need an ad larger than a quarter-page, we will simply bill you for the difference in price. This ad should not be confused with the article advertising your cookoff in the "Cooking with CASI" section in the Terlingua Trails. That article will start to run as soon as you request your cookoff packet and will run until your cookoff occurs.
