DIAL DIRECTORIES:

Mary Ann Kilpatrick Please continue to send me any changes or phone number additions to your Unit 1 telephone listings. You can call me at 727-578-3885 or email me at [email protected]. I send these changes on as I get them. I receive information on new residents, but it doesn’t include a phone number. I recently contacted Dial Directories to find out when the updated Mainlands Dial Directories (Yellow Books) would be printed and delivered. I received the following response: "The Mainlands directory should be going to print towards the end of May and will be delivered to the community by June. This is the same schedule as last year." Thank you to everyone who sends information to keep our listings as up to date as possible!

Neighborhood Watch: Kay McAleer

A Neighborhood Watch Meeting was held on Saturday, May 13th. Brandon Robinson, from the Elder Consumer Protection Program at Stetson University College of Law described over 15 separate scrams and how to avoid them; including the IRS Scam, Fake Charity Scam, Technical Assistance Scam, and Grandparent Scam. Here is some of his advice: To Determine if a Charity if legitimate visit the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance at www.give.org or Charity Watch at www.charitywatch.org UNWANTED SALES/ROBOCALLS: To stop Robocalls visit www.nomorobo.com for information and to sign up. Searching on the BrightHouse/Spectrum/Charter website, I found out that keying in *77 on my phone will permanently block any unidentified callers. Hopefully this will end the high number of calls I have been getting lately that only indicate a city and state in the caller ID. Fraud Avoidance Measures

1. Obtain a FREE copy of your credit report annually – www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228.

2. Register phone numbers with the National Do Not Call List – www.donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to register.

3. Only answer phone calls from numbers you know or recognize. Let other calls go to voice mail.

4. Never do business with unsolicited callers or door-to-door salesmen.

5. Shred all sensitive documents – anything containing your Social Security Number, Credit Card Numbers, Bank Account Numbers,

Page 6

or any other personal identifying information.

6. Never carry your Social Security Card and only carry checks and credit cards you need for the day. Keep these items locked away in a safe place when not needed.

7. Never give out personal information unless YOU initiated the contact.

8. Use Direct Deposit for Government Benefits, Tax Refunds, and Paychecks whenever possible.

9. Use a locking mailbox or suspend mail service if going out-to-town.

10. Opt-Out of pre-screened credit offers – at www.optoutprescreen.com or call 1-888-567-8688.

11. Reduce junk mail by visiting the Direct Marketing Assn. at www.dmachoice.org or call 1-212-768-7277.

12. Use Social Media Carefully. For Facebook – set to “Friends Only” and only “Friend” people you know. Be careful about describing upcoming vacation, etc. - only post pictures after you return home.

WATER AEROBICS: Dawn Haenlein

At 9:30am, Monday – Friday, it sure is nice jumping in the pool and exercising without hurting your joints and sweat pouring down your face! It is rough getting out of that easy chair and missing a 9:30am TV program – but after a few times it gets easier and you sure will feel better!

We are interested in being healthy. Single, married, male, female --- as long as you’re a Unit 1 resident (or overnight guest) you are welcome. No past experience required and we exercise in the shallow end of the pool. Join us when you can – we promise you won’t regret it.

Page 7

Pet Van:

Dawn Haenlein

The Community Vaccine Clinic (Pet Van) comes on the THIRD Friday of each month from 9am to noon. The Van parks on our Unit 1 clubhouse parking lot – and the date/time is on our marquee.

As we come into hurricane season it is important to plan for our pets. Having a “Pet Disaster Kit” offers peace of mind. Have an ID bag with your pet’s name, recent photo, owners contact info, vet and vaccination info, registration and rabies tag – and any special care instructions with you. Put aside a 7-day supply of food and water, bowls, bedding and comfort items. There are only three public shelters in Pinellas County that accepts animals:

1- Oak Grove Middle School,

1370 Belcher Road, Clearwater

2- Thurgood Marshall Middle

School, 3901 22nd Ave. S., St.

Petersburg

3- Dunedin Middle School, 70

Patricia Ave., Dunedin

Residents must pre-register themselves and their pets for these pet-friendly shelters, as space is limited. Mobile home residents are given first priority.

Social Club:

Kay McAleer – President

Prior to the Social Club business meeting on May 9, Suzanne Boisvert, Emergency Management Planner for the City of Pinellas Park, spoke on Hurricane Preparedness. She reminded everyone to know your Evacuation Zone, have a plan in place in case of evacuation (for you and your pet), and to have at least two weeks of hurricane supplies available. If a storm approaches the Tampa Bay area, stay informed by signing up with the various news organizations for alerts (to your phone, tablet or computer) regarding mandatory evacuations, downed power lines, sandbag locations, etc. Hurricane Guides and other useful information was distributed. Following Ms. Boisvert’s presentation, a brief business meeting was held where the Members voted to suspend meetings for June, July and August. Everyone was reminded that there will be Social Club events during the summer, and that meetings will resume on Tuesday, September 12th.

Approximately thirty members enjoyed another delicious Potluck Dinner on May 20th. A big “Thank You” to all the great cooks for making the evening so enjoyable! JUNE – On Saturday, June 17th, at 5 p.m. we will have a Potluck Dinner. Reminders:

Overnight Parking: Parking of vehicles at the far end of the clubhouse lot is not a permanent fix for your vehicles that cannot be parked in your driveway or in the garage overnight. Your out of town company needs to have a “Visitor Pass” which is only good for a two (2) week period and this is only a one time issuance.

WOMEN’S CLUB:

Tami Scheele, President Hello from the Women’s Club! We had our Women’s Club meeting on Wednesday May 3rd, while enjoying some wonderful treats, baked by Carol Hoover! We also welcomed a new member, Kay Church. We had a very successful Trash & Treasures on April 22nd. Joan Blais thanked all of the Women’s Club volunteers, who had such a good time that they wouldn’t even take a break. The women in turn thanked co-chairs Joan Crew & Joan Blais for all that they did to put together this bi-annual event! The Ad Hoc Committee on clubhouse improvements was thanked for their time and professionalism. We had a clothing drive for St Pete College and Pat O’Donnell, who spearheaded it, with the help of her daughter, had plenty of suitable attire donated by the women to bring over to

the college. These clothes will be distributed to students in need that are going out into the work force. A HUGE THANKS to all that participated! Up and Coming Events: Our June meeting, on Wednesday the 7th at 9:30am, will be our last meeting until September 6th at 9:30am. We are working on having someone come to our June meeting from SHINE, to speak about Medicare and answer any questions you may have. NO Women’s Club Meeting for the months of July or August. Ice Cream Social will be August 20th. Sometime between September 2nd and October 22nd, on a Saturday matinee, we will be going to the Dinner Theater. Tickets will be $36 per person and the play is “Mama Won’t Fly”. Reading the brief description, it sounds like we’ll all be sore from laughing so hard!

Please contact Pat Ostrenga, Dot Muller, Kay McAleer or myself if you want to have fun modeling! October 21st will be the Annual Card Party. Pat Ostrenga is asking for donations of baskets and fillers for the event. We will be having a Chili Cook Off and Bake Contest in January 2018 ---- plenty of time to perfect your recipes! We hope to see all of our Women’s Club members at our next meeting, at least those who haven’t gone up north.
