June Assignments:Digital - On Display

Prints - No Print Night in June (Year End Banquet) For the complete list of the year’s assignments,

Message from the President

You are invited to attend the Year End Banquet on June 27, 2016 for a wonderful potluck, award ceremony, and fun. We will gather to set up at 5:30, 6pm for appetizers, then start dinner at 6:30. If you are interested in signing up for the potluck, thanks to Sharay Logan we can do so online at: http://www.PerfectPotluck.com/meals.php?t=HTSC6431. I am very excited about our year end competitions, since we now have a strong representation for our club of over 60 digital images and 40 prints that were entered. I hope to see everyone there. It will be quite a wonderful show of amazing work!

Our club will also be voting in officers and voting on a proposed name change to Puget Sound Photography Club. The board has approved a vote on this specific name. The reasoning behind it is that the club is more representative of education in photography than in kinds or types or uses of cameras; our focus in recent years has been on the art of photography.

The Board has also been looking into the possibility of a display of prints of members in the Edmonds Library; this may take some time to get into the queue of artists waiting. That may happen in the next year, we are waiting to hear more specific dates from the library.

As President, I want to thank the Board of Directors for their dedication and work this year: Gena Reebs, Vice President; Yvonne Shimek, Treasurer; Mary Tevis, Secretary; Dave Patzwald, Digital Director; Al Koskie, Print Director; and Henry Heerschap, Board Member at Large. Thank you as well to Bev Shelton and Lynne Greenup, Membership Committee, and Sharay Logan, Hospitality Coordinator. We have a thriving club and it is due to their hard work!

June Field TripSunday, June 26 9:30-11:30amStreet Photography in Ballard with Bill Royce!Meet at 9:30 at Bergen Place Park at the intersection of NW Market and Leary Ave NW. We can walk NW Market Street, Leary Ave NW, and Ballard Avenue. In addition there is a Sunday Ballard Farmer’s market, so there will likely be street shot opportunities. We will start with a short briefing on street shooting techniques and camera settings. Equipment suggestions: No tripods, no flash, avoid large zoom lenses and large camera bags that can be intimidating. Bring an umbrella. For DSLR shooters, recommend you bring a prime (non-zoom) lens in the 28-50mm range, which will be more discreet. Depending upon how many show up, we may need to split up to avoid a group that is too large (and will be noticed). We can join up for lunch/brunch at 11:30 at Porkchop & Co. Maps and photos from our last field trip to Ballard on our website.

“People have been reading photography as a true docu-ment, at the same time they are now getting suspicious. I am basically an honest person, so I let the camera capture whatever it captures… whether you believe it or not is up to you; it’s not my responsibility, blame my camera, not me.” – Hiroshi Sugimoto

“The picture is like a prayer, an offering, and hopefully an opening through which to seek what we don’t know, or already know and should take seriously.” – Emmet Gowin

“I think the greatest photographers are the amateur photographers who do it because they love it. Arnold Newman is a good example; he is a consummate professional, but he’s also an ‘ama-teur’ in the pure sense of the word.” – John Sexton

“At our best and most fortunate we make pictures because of what stands before our cam-era, to honor what is greater and more interesting than we are. We never accomplish this perfectly, though in return we are given something perfect – a sense of inclusion. Our subject thus redefines us, and is part of the biography by which we want to be known.” – Robert Adams

“Searching is everything – going beyond what you know. And the test of the search is really in the things themselves, the things you seek to understand. What is important is not what you think about them, but how they enlarge you.” – Wynn Bullock

“The work is primarily sub-ject-driven. All decisions flow from there. The photographs are all made in response to a unique subject, in particular context, at a specific moment in time. The thoughtful preparedness that de-fines my working method actually facilitates spontaneity and allows me to embrace surprise. I always have a game plan but view it as merely the jumping off point.” – Gregory Heisler

“It’s not just when you shoot, or what you shot, or where you shoot, it’s the combina-tion of the three.” – Jay Maisel

"In the end I love my craft but it’s only a means to achieving a thing I love more – the photograph. Do that in whatever way allows you to create something that shows me the world in a new way, that makes my pulse quicken and sparks my imagination. Use a light meter or don’t. Use a point and shoot digital camera or a 4×5 field camera. No one cares how you got there when they’re experiencing depth and beauty in your work. We’ll all make much better photographs if we love our photographs more than we love our tools."– David duChemin

Minutes of the PSCC Board of Directors MeetingMay 16, 2016The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. Present were Lauren Heerschap, Henry Heerschap, Mary Tevis, Dave Patzwald, Yvonne Shimek, and Al Koskie.A motion was made to approve the last minutes taken on March 21, 2016, motion seconded and passed.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Lauren Heerschap's report has been published in the newsletter. She discussed the topics of the possible name change and the election of officers. VICE-PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Gena Reebs was not present; however, she has lined up Brian Leary to come give a talk on night photography at the education night on May 30, 2016. TREASURER'S REPORT: Yvonne Shimek reports a bottom line of $4,704 in the bank account as of today. Her financial report as presented was moved to be accepted, seconded, and passed. OLD BUSINESS: There was a discussion about the sound system at the church. Henry Heerschap and Bob Joiner could not get it to work at the May digital night. There was a discussion about looking at purchasing our own sound system and/ortalking to the church about the present system. It was suggested that we discuss the problem with Alex McLain, who used to work at Morgan's, a store that sells similar systems to churches and other organizations.Voting on a new name was discussed. It was moved that it would require at least 60% of the membership to agree to a new name. Motion made, seconded, and passed. Al Koskie will announce it at print night and ask for discussion from themembers.A refreshment chairperson has been found. Sharay (Toni) Logan has been doing it for several meetings and is doing an excellent job. Henry Heerschap priced lighting for the prints on the back table. Four lights, stands, bulbs and a power strip came to $173. The purchase was agreed upon, was moved, seconded and passed, and Henry will institute it this summer.Entries for the Year-End Competition are all in. Since there are only a few prints, it was decided to extend the entry date to Monday print night, May 23, 2016. We still need judges. The Board offered several names for consideration, and Dave Patzwald and Al Koskie will contact them. Lauren needed the winners by June 13, 2016 in order to get the ribbons in time for the banquet.Dave Patzwald discussed the two divisions for digital entries: beginners and others. He will explain the concept to the club , and Lauren will email an explanation to the membership also. NEW BUSINESS: The nominating committee now consists of Margery Robison (elected by membership), Bob Joiner (ap-pointed by President Heerschap), and Yvonne Shimek (elected by the Board). Elections for President, Secretary, Member-At-Large, and Print Director will be held at the Year-End Banquet. In all the current positions, the persons want to contin-ue; nevertheless, an election still needs to be held according to the By-Laws of the club. The NWCCC wants to sponsor an all day PSA judging course by Jon Fishbeck. A discussion was held on whether we should do it, where would be some available venues, and what times and dates would be best. Lauren will investigate meetingplaces. It was suggested that PSCC should host it: motion made, seconded and passed.Judging on print and digital nights was discussed. Mary Tevis volunteered to call the members to set up judges for each night. There was a discussion about a Florida photography club that had hired a company to compile their digital images and send these to judges at the judge's home, where they scored them, sent them back to the company, where in turn the images were made into a slideshow with the title, score, and maker's name. Then the slideshow was shown at the meeting. It was decided that we would try the at-home judging in July. There was a motion made as follows: Change the digital night to at-home judging for July for the digital meeting, the images to be submitted by the June digital night; this will be announce by email and the all meetings. The motion was seconded and passed.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,Mary Tevis, Secretary PSCC
