IsyourfamilyreadyforMidsummer?TheJune23rdholidayisaprimeopportunitytobringaliOleNorwegianculturetothemiddle of summer. What started as a pagan celebraIon towake up the ground aderwinter has now grown into a fullcelebraIoncompletewith itsowntradiIons.Herearea fewofourfavoriteMidsummercustomsthatyoucaneasilybringintoyourhousehold!

At its heart, Midsummer celebraIons are about connecIngwith the outdoors. In the past, girlswould pickwild flowersandputthemundertheirpillowsatnight inhopesof futuregoodluck.YourfamilycaneasilyadaptthistradiIontotodayby taking a hike outside to enjoy a break from the normalhustleandbustleofmodernlife.

In another Norwegian tradiIon,many homes are decoratedwith flowers and plants gathered from the day’s hike.DecoraIng your own home with plants gathered with yourownfamilyisafunwaytogetthewholefamilyinvolvedinapopular Norwegian custom – just be careful about whichplantsyou’regathering!

AgoodMidsummercelebraIonhas to includeabonfire. In pre- ChrisIan Imes, bonfires werethought to awaken the Earth ader its winterslumber. Today they’re a greatway to bring thefamily together and bridge the gap betweenNorwegianandAmericancustoms.

Just like here, manyMidsummerbonfires inNorway includehotdogsand s’mores, something thatwill likelybeabighitwith your family at home. However, good food is alwayspopular andMidsummer is no excepIon.Don’t be afraid toincorporate other Norwegian recipes into your celebraIon,too.TheonlineRecipeBoxontheSonsofNorwaywebsiteisagreatplacetostart.

Finally, onceyouhavethefamilytogetheraroundthebonfireand you’ve had your fill of food, share some Norwegianfolktales. Tales of Viking adventures or trollsmake for greatbonfire tales and could spark an interest in your kids’Norwegian roots. The Members’ SecIon of the Sons ofNorway website is a great place to start your search forbonfirestories!
