NEWS FROM NATIONAL

We are looking forward to our National Convention in Bartlesville from June 23-25. You can still make plans to attend. The National Scrapbooks for several years including 2014, 2015, and 2016 will be on display at convention. The National Officers will be giving a workshop on National Officer duties and time commitments. We will also be having discussions of the future of JPS and what members want from our organization. Come and join in the discussions. It is not too early to be thinking of National Memorial Fund nominations as these are due to the National Board by March 1, 2017. The Fund will be voted on at the 2017 Convention and will total over $ 40,000. We look forward to a great time in Bartlesville and to visiting with friends we see too rarely.

Bartlesville Chapter News

June 2016 Debbie Laroche, Reporter May and June bring some of our busiest times of the year, even without hosting National Convention. The scholarship committee this year was Gail Barnett, Sandy Mason, and Karen Lutke. Mary Wyatt chaired the committee, but did not vote.

• Triston Wyatt, grandson of Mary Wyatt, was awarded the $2000 High School scholarship by Michelle Swaney and Mary Wyatt Friday May 21st at the Bartlesville High School Awards Assembly.

• Allie Hoppe, daughter of Charlotte Hoppe, was awarded the $1000 continuing Education Scholarship.

Fund Raising Activities: Our second fundraiser of the year was a sheet sale May 24-25 in the cafeteria. This was a new venture for us. Next, we will host a ‘Books R Fun’ sale June 15-16. Charitable Activities:

• We were given the opportunity to volunteer at Kiddie Park in the pre-season (before the weather gets too hot!). Suzi Burmingham, Allie and Charlotte Hoppe, Grover and Kathy Shelts, and Michelle and Greg Swaney donated their evening May 20th.

• Sonfest will be June 3-5 at Sooner Park. More details coming in next month’s edition.

Member News: Death – Sue Ford, retired life member, passed away May 12th. Her career at Phillips Petroleum Company spanned 36 years and she joined JPS in 1972. She wore many hats for the Bartlesville Chapter, serving as Convention Chair, Vice President, two years as President, then Treasurer. She was an exceptional volunteer in the community, continually working to help others.

Page 6: June 2016 - JPS National · Phillips Petroleum Company spanned 36 years and she joined JPS in 1972. She wore many hats for the Bartlesville Chapter, serving as Convention Chair, Vice

Several JPS members attended funeral services for Sue Ford on May 20. The following were in attendance, Greg and Michelle Swaney, Rosie Swindell and daughter, Maria, Bettye Williams, Eunice Bonnett, Janet Whaling, and Gail and Jerold Barnett. Jill Coble from the Houston Chapter was also in attendance. There may have been others there, but Gail is sorry if she missed seeing you.

Bartlesville Happenings: Excerpt from the Examiner-Enterprise, Tuesday, May 3, 2016:

Longtime Bartlesville community leader Bettye Williams didn't see it coming. At its annual meeting Monday night, Bartlesville Regional United Way presented its 2016 Spirit Award to Williams. The award recognizes exceptional commitment and leadership to the community. "It was a total surprise. I had absolutely no idea what was going on," Williams said after the meeting. "I was bumming around in my sweats - thinking, you know, well, and my daughter says "We are going at 5:30. It's about time to go. You've got to change clothes." She wouldn't let me come in my sweats. Bettye, who has lived in Bartlesville for more than 50 years and devoted herself to multiple community organizations over the years, said she didn't think she'd "done that much". Williams began her career with Phillips Petroleum Company as a mail room clerk. When she retired in 1995, Williams was director of the employee assistance program. "I retired from Phillips but I'm not retired from life and helping," she said. Former Spirit Award recipient, Jamie Wood, described Williams as everyone's friend who never said no to anyone who needed help. Former United Way Director, Thad Satterfield said, "She is a constant champion for the underdog and those fighting for truth, fairness and common sense. She models her belief in taking time to do things the right way, the first time...She is a tireless community champion." Williams has served on many community organizations and has been involved in the United Way partner agencies. "Every community worth its salt has its matriarchal standard-bearers, and for Bartlesville, especially Westside community, Bettye Williams is one of those leaders." Bartlesville, Williams said, is a great community to live. "I just want to do my part," she said. "It's been good to me and I'd like to share it with others.

Congratulations to Bob and LuAnne Hamilton on their 50th wedding anniversary. LuAnne was also featured in a senior profile article in the Sunday edition of the Bartlesville newspaper and recently traveled to Hawaii with one of her daughters. Christy Humphries, previous high school scholarship recipient and last year’s continuing education recipient, started her ConocoPhillips internship May 23rd. Kathy and Grover Shelts traveled to Noble, Ok for the graduation of their great-great niece, Syarra Kenneday. Clara Gomez-Moran, daughter of Tonita and Marcus Moran, has passed all her theory and practical exams and is now a licensed private pilot. Clara, last year’s high school scholarship recipient, is enrolled for summer classes and is going to work this summer. Bryon and Tish Harris attended the Big 12 Baseball Tournament the last week of May in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown Ball Park. They returned home in time to attend graduation for their grandson, Ronnie Jay Stumpff III (Trey) at Bartlesville High School. I was able to spend Mother’s Day this year with my mom in Dayton, Ohio. She loved trying a new restaurant for lunch – McAlister’s Deli, and enjoying a barbeque at my brother’s house that evening. I can’t wait to see everyone at convention.

JUNE REPORT

CONNIE BUCKNER, REPORTER

Happy Father’s Day! God bless everyone who has been a “father figure” in a child’s life. Dad, mom, grandpa, grandma, cousin, friend, etc….THANK YOU.

Hail in May? Yes, there was pea-size hail in Pearland. Sally sent a picture of hail in her backyard. The weather has certainly been strange in the Gulf coast area…what will summer bring???!!!

June is a sweet month. In 1847 the DONUT was invented. I love June, especially when it’s covered with chocolate and sprinkles!!!

Here’s an EASY sweet treat recipe for your enjoyment. Butterfinger Pie 6 (2 1/8 ounce size) Butterfinger candy bars, crushed 1 (8 oz) cream cheese 1 (12 oz) Cool Whip 1 graham cracker crust Mix first three ingredients together. Pour in crust. Chill. Enjoy on a hot summer day!

Sending prayers to Sonsee Manker and family.

To all convention attendees, HAVE A GREAT TIME…ON THE PRAIRIE!

OKLAHOMA CITY CHAPTER

Sharon Eaton, Reporter June 2016

Greetings from Oklahoma City!

Hey! Did you hear? It is finally June and we are having a convention in Bartlesville! I hope you are as excited as I am!

The Bartlesville chapter and the Oklahoma City chapter have some fun events planned and you will not want to miss them. I think maybe there will even be a surprise or two along the way!

I do hope everyone has sent in their registration form, made their reservations at the hotel, and that you are looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. If you haven’t registered and are able to come, give Greg Swaney a call – we want to see YOU there.

On a sad note, the Oklahoma City chapter extends our condolences to National President Gail Barnet at the passing of her mother.

I would also like to take a moment and thank all of our National Officers for their hard work and dedication to JPS this past year. Being a National Officer is not an easy task and we thank them for being willing to serve. A special thanks to Patricia Cooper, National Janues editor – without you, we wouldn’t be reading this. And, Patricia, I really am sorry I am always late with my letter. Thank you for being so gracious with your reminders!

See you in Bartlesville!!

Sharon Eaton

It was sparce pickins at the JPS dinner this month. Everyone’s busy with end of school activities or

other activities along with Memorial Day coming up. We had a great program given by our own JPS

member Norma Lughinbyhl. She gave a report on what HC3 (Hutchinson County Crisis Center) has

been providing the area communities assisting with shelter and services for victims of sexual assault

and domestic violence. This agency is funded by matching grant money where the community

donations are matched to assist with cost to help those in crisis. Norma explained that monies expected

from United Way this year had been designated for other projects which will lower the amount of grant

money matched that they will be receiving. One of the vehicles that they have been using to transport

victims to the hospital and for other services is no longer viable for transportation due to engine

problems. The requests for services has risen due to increased sexual assault victims so she is asking

for local support to assist with the additional donations needed to provide the services for these victims

in their time of crisis. It’s very overwhelming the increase of these types of crimes in our area.

The Real Meaning Of Peace Author Unknown There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace. Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why? "Because," explained the king, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."

JPS did a Supply drive for the House of Tiny Treasures which took place April 19th thru April 28th and was headed by our very own Maribel Bradford. We provided a list of needs for CPChem employees; which were diapers (sizes 4-6), baby wipes, bug spray and sun block lotion. There were several CPChem employees who donated cash as well. SEARCH’s House of Tiny Treasures is a nationally accredited, nonprofit daycare that provides early childhood education for homeless toddlers and preschool aged children while their parents attend classes and begin working. HIGHLIGHT - MARIBEL BRADFORD The Hubby and I took a much needed mini-vacay this past Thursday-Sunday in Austin, Texas! It was really nice because we didn’t have to jump on a plane to get there. We stayed at the Lost Pines Resort. He spent one of the days racing around the Formula 1 Racetrack in Austin testing all types of fast Mercedes (he was in HOG HEAVEN!!!) and I spent my time relaxing at the spa getting a much needed hurt-me one-hour massage.

Ahhhhhh!!! We did the small lazy river around the resort pool and sat by the pool most of the time. We even got dressed up one evening and had a nice

dinner at their Stories Restaurant. It sure is a challenge getting back to work after such a relaxing weekend! Hi to All!!
