Letter from the Rector
Dear Friends
The following comments were given as part of my‘Rector’s Comments’ at the Annual ParochialChurch Meeting on 17th April 2016. Several peoplecommented afterwards that I should share themwith a wider audience. So here we go …
On the 29th January this year Oxgangs PrimarySchool, in Edinburgh, was closed when an exteriorwall collapsed after storm Gertrude hit the area. The collapse was blamed on poor constructionresulting in structural faults which led to thecollapse. At Easter this year it was announced that a further 17 schoolswould not re-open after the holidays as they were also feared to have thesame structural faults. The pupils have been found alternative venues tocontinue their education.
The story caught my attention, as an ex-civil engineer, and reminded me ofsome words written by the Apostle Peter:You … like living stones are being built into a spiritual house to be a holypriesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through JesusChrist - 1 Peter 2:5
There are several analogies in the New Testament used to describe theChristian family of which Peter’s image of stones (brick) put together tocreate a house is just one.
Now for the walls of a house to be strong and securethey need to be well constructed, and in the case ofmodern bricks, to be stuck together with mortar.
When the mortar that binds the bricks together isinsufficient, or becomes cracked and damaged, thewall becomes weak and eventually it will collapse. Now the jury is still out on the Oxgangs issue as tothe exact cause of the collapse but it illustrates thepoint well.
In terms of a Christian family the mortar which binds us (stones/bricks)
5
together is love. Since returning from my sabbatical at the end of 2015 Ihave been surprised by the number of disagreements and conflicts withinthe St Michael’s Church family. They may have been there before butreturning with fresh eyes I am concerned by this. These are the cracks inthe spiritual house of our church that if allowed to develop will lead to ourdownfall.
In his letter to the Christian church in Colossae, nearly 2000 years ago,the Apostle Paul wrote this:Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clotheyourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has agrievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over allthese virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. -Colossians 3:12-14
I think we would do well to take note of those words. We must learn tolove each other as brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. None of us areperfect, not even me! So let us clothe ourselves with a little humility andpatience, let us bear with each other and forgive each other. So that wemay be bound together in perfect unity as the people of God, the churchof Jesus Christ, here in Middlewich.
Yours in ChristSimon

This year’s Rogation Service was held at King Street Hall Farm, courtesy ofStephen and Isobel Moore. Around 60 people attended from St Michael’s andSt John’s Churches, and we also welcomed Lostock Green Methodist.
We progressed around the farm in stately fashion, watched by the cows.

The children enjoyed the occasion, and the bring-and-share supper wasgreat!
New friends were made and the world was put to right on the journeyaround the farm, while the crops and animals were blessed—
A great evening was had by all – and the sun shone!
Thanks to Steve Broadfoot for the photos

Remember the church of St. Martin’s (in France) from the last issue?......
A History of St. Martin’s
Said Eliane and Dudley Freeman, owners of the estate of Moussac in1989: "The first traces of population (graves, foundations) back to the firstcenturies AD. A Gallo-Roman bridge is located a hundred meters from thehamlet. The chapel was founded in 1096: dedicated to St. Martin, this is areal parish church served by the vicar of Saint-Martial of Montmorillon. Thelantern of the dead is built in the twelfth century, right next to the church. Thevillage is legally autonomous. He counted up to 200 inhabitants in the censusof 1793. "
And in later centuries?"In 1803, the church is permanentlyattached to Saint-Martial. In 1822,the town is encompassed byMontmorillon. For over 80 years, theVillage accepts and monuments indanger of falling into ruin. Thelantern of the dead is moved in afield across the road. In 1905, thelaw of separation of church andstate, the chapel falls to the town ofMontmorillon which resells theMarquis De Moussac. This powerfulfamily already owned the land andthe neighbouring house (anappointment of hunting built byLaurent Augier de Moussac in 1777). "
What were the stages of restoration?"The De Moussac undertake work from the beginning of thetwentieth century. In 1989, we redeemed the field and did restore the roofand belfry of the chapel. In 2004, with the support of the DRAC and theGeneral Council, we organized the movement of the lantern of the dead thathas regained its original place. "
The lantern of the dead is explained on the next page!
15
"The cost of heating and lighting St Michael's for a whole year is nearly£4,900:
Heating alone costs almost £30 per day.So please turn the lights off and shut the door after you!
FUNCTIONS AT NUMBER 28
All the rooms at Number 28, which is opposite St Michael’s Church, areavailable for rent when not being used by the Church.
The rooms seat between 8 and 60 people, are well appointed andwould suit private functions or business meetings.
A full commercial standard kitchen is alsoavailable.
Go to the Number 28 Websitewww.at28.org/roomhire
to see details, or phone the office on 01606 738005.
What are the peculiarities of the chapel?"It's an elongated plan building consists of a single ship nave extended by anarrower rectangular choir. A small square steeple, covered with chestnutshingles, is located at the intersection of the nave and choir. It remainedvirtually untouched since its construction. Its most remarkable element, arethe frescoes that appear here and there in a recent layer of lime. They maybe related to those of Jouhet, Antigny or Our Lady of Montmorillon. "
And the lantern of the dead?"It's a hollow column of 5.98 m height (cross included) with a sealed tabletin its lower part. The openwork pavilion surmounting the disappeared whenmoving in the nineteenth century, that's why he was long confused withHosanna Cross. Its function is largely unknown. The perforated pavilioncontained perhaps three or four openings in which were placed by a pulleysystem, a lamp in the dark: she was supposed to guide the souls of thedead. "

He Smiles
Hi there stranger don’t walk on byI am the one to brighten your day.Just expend a minute of your timeBefore you resolve to hurry on by.
I’d love you to share a trivial smile,A smile will make you feel so good.It will make you feel better inside,
You’ll face the world as you should.
I get an odd coin thrown in my hatBy the guilty as they run past here.Thinking it makes them better folk,
But it’s grudged, and that’s so clear.
I’d much rather see a smiling faceThat shows a warmth deep within.Than take coins from the heartless,It feels like robbing and that’s a sin.
Looks like you got a smile my friendAnd that’s a wonderful sight to see.Sure it makes you feel nice inside? That my friend is your gift from me
You weren't a stranger to me today,You were a good friend I hadn’t met.Tomorrow when you pass this way,
I’ll be a friend you won’t forget.John Currie
