Women only gym coming soonWe have successfully secured funding to open a women only gym in the Zest Centre. The gym, due to open in the autumn, has been developed in response to customer demand. We already run two very popular women only sessions in our existing gym and will now be in a position to offer a dedicated space for women.

"We are really excited about our new women only gym. Many women only feel comfortable exercising in an all-female environment, especially women from Black and Minority Ethnic communities. Our gym will offer local women and women from across the city a relaxed space where they can get more physically active", says Janet Skirrow, Chief Executive of Zest.

Case study

Maria

Maria made her first visit to Zest in 2011, shortly after moving into the local area. She started swimming twice a week and now visits the library, attends Craft Club and is supported by Zest for Work on a regular basis.

Since coming to Zest Maria has met some really nice people, all in a similar situation of wanting something to do in the communitiy. Maria also wanted to keep socialising and interacting with people.

"Zest has a really friendly atmosphere, the staff are nice and the prices are reasonable", says Maria.

In July 2013 Maria was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"It was a complete shock. I felt tired, drained and so unfit. But I had chemotherapy and we caught it early. It was an ongoing process for six months; my life was just about hospital appointments and recovering from cancer."

Zest helps Maria to stay positive and motivated. She has completed Zest for Work's 'What is Health' (WiSH) course which focuses on learning how to become more self-confident, positive and assertive.

"Zest keeps me going. I have family and friends but you need to do your own thing. The WiSH course taught me that I am not the only one going through tough times. I feel a lot more confident", reflects Maria.
