President’s Message Brandee Bower We are half way through 2015 and at the time of the year where we all ask ourselves how it is already June and where has the time gone? For AWL, it has been a fantastic year thus far. Each month we have been involved in charitable endeavors by building houses, donating food and money and working at Harvesters, among others. We had a very successful “CLE in the City” with some of the best speakers I’ve ever witnessed at a CLE. We celebrated our judges at a reception and had a great kick-off event for our golf tournament. I have been very impressed with the 2015 Board of Directors and the outpouring of support from our generous sponsors. Since we set the bar so high for the first part of 2015, what is on tap for the next half of the year? I’m so glad you asked, because it too is full of fabulous events. Here are some dates to get onto your calendar: July 16th, Step Up event and happy hour; September 25th, Golf tournament and December 8th, Holiday party. 2AWL Members Help Fight Childhood Hunger By Nicole Fisher

CLE in the City Annual Conference a Success By Ashely Ricket

On April 2, 2015, approximately 30 members volunteered at Harvesters to fight childhood hunger by assembling BackSnacks for distribution in the community. Harvesters BackSnack program provides a weekly backpack filled with nutritious, child-friendly food for schoolchildren to take home over the weekend. More than 100,000 children in Harvesters’ service area receive free and reduced-price school meals during the week, and many of those are at risk of hunger on weekends.

The BackSnack program is a partnership between Harvesters, a school and a community partner (corporate, civic or religious orga-nizations). Harvesters provides the food and backpacks. The local community partners help facilitate picking up the BackSnack food kits from Harvesters and distributing them to the school. School princi-pals and/or counselors determine which children receive BackSnacks at each school. For a school to be eligible it must be located within Harvester’s 26-county service area in northwest Missouri and north-east Kansas.

The Association for Women Lawyers coordinated this volunteer shift as part of the program Food from the Bar, which was coordinated by the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. Members may continue to support this worthy cause by contacting Harvesters to volunteer or by making a case donation. A $250 donation provides a weekly backpack of nutritious food to a student for an entire school year. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to fight childhood hunger!

Thank you to all of our attendees and speakers who made the CLE in the City Annual Conference such a great success! We had excellent speakers on many timely topics, which made for a wonderful turnout of attendees. There were two (2) tracks of programming for much of the day, so the attendees were able to choose from many different topics that were best suited for their practices. During lunch, we had two (2) very interesting keynote speakers – FBI Special Agent Amanda Spee and U.S. District Attorney Teresa Moore, who spoke about the prosecution of federal human trafficking cases. Next came some more great afternoon CLE sessions, and Judge J. Dale Youngs and Judge W. Brent Powell topped off the conference with an update on 16th Judicial Circuit Local Rules. The day ended with a Judicial Reception at the Counterpoint Event Space in the Crossroads. It was a great conference and we hope you will join us again next year.

We would like to again thank our event sponsors for their support of our organization and this event:

The Association for Women Lawyers of Greater Kansas City hosted its first social event of the year on April 23, 2015 at the beautiful Counterpoint event space in the Crossroads. Members of the judiciary, attendees of the AWL’s Annual Conference – CLE in the City and others arrived soon after the final session

of the Conference. The event was enjoyed by all. Members of the judiciary were guests of honor and first year law student Lisa Martin was awarded the Roxanne Barton Conlin scholar-ship. Attendees enjoyed participating in a wine pull that raised money for the Food from the Bar campaign benefitting Harvester’s.

The reception was a great time to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Thank you to all AWL’s sponsors who helped make the Spring Judicial Reception a memorable event.

Lisa Martin, a first year law student at Washburn University School of Law, was awarded the Roxanne Barton Conlin scholar-ship at the AWL Judicial Reception on Thursday, April 23, 2015. The scholarship is awarded to a female law student, who has distinguished herself through academics, community service and/or involvement in activities promoting women. Out of many worthy applicants, Martin stood out for her top grades, strong work ethic, dedication, community service and involvement in organizations promoting women’s issues.

Martin is completing her first year at the

Washburn University School of Law, where she maintains top grades. She received her under-graduate degree from University of Kansas in 2008 and thereafter interned for the U.S. Senate and worked for several years before attending law school. She has a very strong work ethic and dedication not only to her coursework, but also to her community service.

She has been active and involved in the community both before and during law school. When she is not studying, she keeps herself busy volunteering for many worthwhile causes. For the past five years, Martin has mentored a young

girl in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. Many of the activities she does with her “Little Sister” include giving back to the community. Martin has worked events with her “Little Sister” to raise money for her “Little Sister’s” school, and together they have also volunteered time working at a community garden that donates produce to local food banks. She has expressed that she thinks teaching her “Little Sister” to give back to her community is an essential part of her job as a “Big Sister.”

Martin has also been active and involved in various organizations promoting women’s issues. She has been involved in the Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City for the last several years and is also a member of the Women Attorney’s Association of Topeka and a member of Washburn Law School’s Women’s Legal Forum group. Additionally, Martin is a member of Phi Alpha Delta, the Veteran’s Law Association and the Oil and Gas Law Center.

This summer, Martin will be at Kiewit Energy Group where she will be investi-gating equal employment opportunity (EEO) complaints and issues for the company and providing training on EEO on construc-tion sites across the U.S. We are very excited to have Lisa Martin join us as a member. Congratulations Lisa!

Heartland Habitat for Humanity, our annual build partner, hosted a Women’s Build this Spring to help build a home in Kansas City, Kansas. AWL members donated a full day of labor on May 7, 2015, to help work on shingling, framing basement walls and adding braces to trusses. The volunteers aptly learned some construction basics in a relatively short period of time and particularly enjoyed the use of power tools!

Habitat for Humanity believes that an important part of breaking the cycle of gen-erational poverty is for low income families to invest income in housing in order to provide an affordable place to raise a family and build wealth through home ownership. This new home will provide needed affordable housing to a family chosen through a rigorous selec-tion process. Each prospective homeowner must invest over 150 hours of “sweat equity” into the home, make monthly mortgage payments and complete a series of courses on homeownership that cover topics including home maintenance and financial planning.

AWL is proud to partner with Heartland Habitat for Humanity. This affiliate has built nearly 300 homes in Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Johnson counties in Kansas, and Clay and Platte counties in Missouri. On an interna-tional level, Habitat for Humanity has been in operation since 1976, and has built or reno-vated more than 200,000 homes.

Golf Committee Holds Kick Off EventBy Tracy BarnesOn May 28, 2015, AWL held a “Kick-off” party in honor of our 20th anniversary hosting the AWL “I’m Not Serious About Golf” Tournament. More than 30 members attended this fun event hosted by Golfsmith, The Koranda Law Firm, LLC and The Law Office of Tracy L. Barnes, LLC. There was plenty of networking, followed by prizes for winners of the “closest to the pin” and “longest drive” contests. Golfsmith donated a gift card for one lucky AWL member. And, Golfsmith generously provided AWL members a discount on apparel and equipment to make sure they looked their best come Tournament Time!

Several attorneys took advantage of the event as an opportunity to secure their sponsorships early and registered their firms as sponsors for the upcoming Tournament. A big thank you to all those who attended and made the event so successful!

AWLF Chairman and President of the Board Denise Henning saved a man’s life with the portable AED that she keeps in her car. This is why Denise raises money for the auto-mated external defibrillators (AEDs) through the Henning Family Foundation.

On April 15, 2015, Denise was at her son, Matthew’s, baseball game at Fountain Bluff Sports Complex in Liberty when an umpire collapsed. Denise sent her son Bryan to the car to get the portable AED that she keeps in her car while Denise and a parent who is a fireman administered CPR. When Bryan got back with the AED, Denise started it and put the pads on the man’s chest. The AED administered the shock. By the time the ambulance arrived, the man who had been pulseless and not breathing, was breathing and had regained consciousness.

The Henning Family Foundation was formed in memory of Tim Henning who passed away on May 15, 2012, at the age of 47, after suffering a heart attack at his son’s base-ball game. Despite the valiant efforts of other parents, including an ER doctor, a paramedic and a nurse, who tried to revive Tim, there was not an AED at the baseball field where Tim had the heart attack. An AED would have given Tim a better chance at survival.

The Henning Family Foundation has placed 100 AEDs around the Kansas City Metropolitan area at ballparks, kids’ sports venues, community centers, the Kansas City Zoo, other non-profits, and the Liberty, Kearney and North Kansas City Public Schools. The Henning Family Foundation would like to thank all those who have sup-ported and donated to support this effort.

It’s been a busy few months for the Connections group. There were many group activities this quarter, both as a large group and as individual classes. In March, 2015, everyone met at Lidia’s for a fun group painting event, put on by Colors and Bottles. Working with an instructor, the ladies were able to let their creativity flow with a fun painting design. Although everyone was painting the same thing, each painter’s take on the project created beautiful varieties in the art.

On April 8, 2015, several members of each class came together to support the Women’s Employment Network (WEN) at their annual luncheon fundraiser. This was an uplifting lunch, with several speakers that shared poignant and impassioned speeches. A former WEN graduate sang a moving song. Dianne Cleaver and her husband, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, served as honorary Co-Chairs and speakers. Mayor Sylvester “Sly” James, Jr. also spoke about the impor-tance of supporting females in the workforce.

On May 27 and 28, 2015, members of the Connections group met at the Women’s Employment Network to review and revise resumes of the current WEN class. The women came from a variety of backgrounds; some were new to the job market and needed help making their resume look marketable while working with little experience. Other class members had many years of experience and were attempting to update their dated resumes. It was a great exercise for many Connections members who hadn’t dusted off their own resumes in quite some time!

The Class of 2015 is getting larger! Shauna Alexander welcomed daughter Anya Rose Alexander into the world on May 6, 2015. She weighed 8 lbs. 1 ounce, and was 21.5” long! Anya’s big sister is excited to have a baby in the house and couldn’t be happier. Congratulations to Shauna and her family!

The Class of 2014 has some movers and shakers. Kelly McCambridge is growing her firm and expanding to now accept family law mediations. Mentor Aubrey Gann-Redmon is coming up on her 6th year in solo practice. She will be speaking at numerous

CLEs between now and the end of June, including teaching the Wyandotte County Bar Association about free legal research on May 20, 2015; a joint CLE presentation on DWI updates with Mentee Tracy Barnes through UMKC’s CLE program on June 19 and June 30, 2015. Also, on June 26, 2015, she will be teaching a CLE on Probate issues in Personal Injury cases as part of KCMBA’s “CLE by the Hour” program. Mentor Athena Dickson taught a CLE at the recent Bench Bar and Boardroom Conference held in Branson, Missouri.

Mentee Callie Pippen Raitinger is embarking on an exciting new non-profit. She, along with several other AWL members and community members, are excited to announce the establishment of the first chapter of a Missouri nonprofit—Care to Learn—in Kansas City. Care to Learn is a fund designed to meet immediate basic unmet needs for school children, as identified by school employees, which fall under the categories of health, hunger and hygiene. It is the vision of Care to Learn that no child will suffer physi-cally or emotionally due to lack of food, access to medical, dental or mental health care or hygiene issues. The unique business model of

Care to Learn is in its simplicity: Identify what kids need and provide it quickly and dis-cretely. The Springfield-based nonprofit was founded in 2008 and has grown to more than nineteen (19) Chapters: Bolivar; Bradleyville; Cape Girardeau; Clever; Chadwick; Fordland; Greenfield; Hazelwood; Hurley; Logan-Rogersville; Nixa; Ozark; Republic; Sparta; Springfield; St. Charles; Union Star; Willard; Warrenton and Ozarks Technical Community College; and as of this fall, the Kansas City public charter school Scuola Vita Nuova. For more about the history and progress of the organization, please check out the website at http://caretolearnfund.org/. There will be many opportunities in the future for AWL members to contribute to the success of Care to Learn in Kansas City. If you have any ques-tions or are interested in learning more about Care to Learn in Kansas City, please contact Callie Pippin Raitinger at [email protected] or 913-709-1783.

In addition to presenting the DWI Updates CLEs with Aubrey, Mentee Tracy Barnes successfully co-sponsored the AWL’s “I’m Not Serious About Golf” tournament Kick-off Event on May 28, 2015. The event was held at the Golfsmith in Overland Park, and the

Golfsmith staff went above and beyond to make sure the group had a blast. Prizes were given for a putting contest and a longest drive contest, and guests had plenty of opportuni-ties to network. More than thirty people attended to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of AWL’s Premier Golf Tournament.

The Class of 2014 also met as a group for brunch at Mentor Judge Beth Phillips’ home. Judge Phillips had quite the homemade spread and the group gathered for mimosas and a fantastic meal! A big thanks to Judge Phillips and her husband Judge Powell for hosting the rowdy bunch.

The Class of 2013 has a move to announce. Mentee Brooke Amos joined Flook & Graham, P.C. as an associate. She is settling in and loves being part of the firm. Brooke also graduated

from the KCMBA Bar Leadership Academy. The Class of 2012 is full of rock stars

working to better their community. Mentee Monica Smith graduated from the KCMBA Bar Leadership Academy, and is now serving on the Police Athletic League (PAL) Junior Board. Her dedication to Toastmasters International has earned her the Advanced Communicator Silver and Advanced Leadership Levels. She was also recognized with the Triple Crown Award for achieving three (3) levels within a single year.

Mentee Meredith Webster, served as a com-mittee member for the SevenDays organiza-tion, assisting in the organization of the first SevenDays peace walk to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the shootings at the Jewish Community Center and Village Shalom.

She also coordinated the speaker for the events leading up to the walk. The walk raised over $150,000.00 for use toward promoting peace and tolerance and youth fine arts!

On April 22, 2015, the Class gathered at Mentor Sherri Wattenbarger’s house for a dinner party. They enjoyed French wine and some truly spectacular dishes prepared by the fine cooks in the class! The group wishes to express a special thank you to Sherri’s husband for playing Grill Master.

The Class of 2011 has some baby news as well. Ashley Felton is due in July with her second child, while Mentee Gillian Wilcox is due with her first child in October! Well wishes to both ladies!

4th Annual Power Walk For Dress for Success Community Support Committee By Laura O’Sullivan

Calling all runners, walkers and virtual walkers – the AWL team needs you! The 4th Annual Power Walk for Dress for Success is the year of growth and movement. We are excited about the new 5K race route, which winds its way through The Plaza on Brush Creek. We begin the morning at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, June 27, 2015, Frank A. Theis Park, Oak and 47th Streets, across from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The men will kick things off with the Men in Heels Race, hosted by Joel Nichols from 41 Action News. All men are welcome to join…we have plenty of heels in just the right size.

The festivities don’t end there. Our DJ will be spinning all the right tunes. A Zumba instructor will get us revved up for the main event. The timed runners will head out first, followed by the walkers. Don’t forget to stick around to celebrate the winners. Bring the kids and visit Kids’ Corner and the Zoo Mobile. This truly is a family event and we hope to see all of you (including dogs on leash).

When you come on race day, don’t forget to wear your AWL red! Last year, AWL was easily spotted. If you can’t make it in person, make it in spirit! Join our team as a virtual walker or donate to our team on our fundraising page.

Remember it’s all for a great cause. The mission of Dress for Success is to promote “the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.” More information on Dress for Success Kansas City can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/dfsKansasCity.

We are aiming to eclipse last year’s total fun-draising for the event. We are making progress, but need your help. Here’s what your money will accomplish:

• $25 gives one woman the shoes to wear to a job interview.

AWL STEP-UP 2015-VOLUNTEERS NEEDED By Maureen Brady

Please join us for Step Up on 1:30 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2015 at the Kansas City Municipal Court. This annual warrant relief event is designed to assist women who are victims of domestic violence and to resolve out-standing speeding, traffic and parking tickets.

Step Up provides free legal assistance to the women and enables them to resolve outstanding Municipal Court warrants and charges that could create problems with obtaining employ-ment, housing and social service benefits. Many housing facilities and jobs perform background checks to see if people have warrants; and, if they do, the women with warrants become ineli-gible. Disposing of these outstanding charges helps the women access much needed services.

In exchange for probation and community service, many women are able to address speeding and parking tickets that will plague them for years. The program also partners with Connections to Success, a local nonprofit, to offer Step Up participants classes on building a life plan and job-seeking skills such as interview attire and resume preparation. The classes are completed as a condition of probation.

We need AWL volunteers to act as defense counsel for the day to the women who seek assistance through the relief program. Please mark your calendars for this very important event.

For more information, contact Maureen Brady, at 816-888-8010 or at [email protected].
