Michelle Coberly, Executive Director Yes, with the arrival of June, we all think of summer, although I know many of us think of Memorial Day as the real beginning of summer! The weather has really given us a run for its money so far this year, so June and the start of summer are welcomed wholeheartedly. I know we all have things that come to mind when we anticipate summer vacations, trips to the beach, fireworks, gardening, and the list goes on and on. This year, we have two new things to add to that list, our CARF re-certification survey and the YMCA Veggie Van! Porter Hills is proud to be an accredited organization through CARF – the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Initial accreditation was received in 1993, and every 4 to 5 years PHV undergoes a re-survey to confirm we are still meeting and exceeding the standards they put in place. Our last visit was in 2009, and we are making plans for our next visit this month. Three surveyors from CARF will be spending June 23 – 25 with staff, reviewing all aspects of the Village, from administration to programming to the care we provide. In addition to staff involvement, they will also be meeting with residents and family members to get their input. We hope that, if you are asked, you will be willing to assist us in this process. I am also very excited to announce that the YMCA Veggie Van will be making a stop at Porter Hills Village once a week beginning June 3! This is a fabulous opportunity for everyone on our campus to have the Farmers Market come to us. The Van will be parked in front of the 3600 building on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Please stop by and check out the fresh fruits and vegetables that will be available on a weekly basis! It’s Summer! Michelle Coberly, Executive Director Yes, with the arrival of June, we all think of summer, although I know many of us think of Memorial Day as the real beginning of summer! The weather has really given us a run for its money so far this year, so June and the start of summer are welcomed wholeheartedly. Porter Hills Women’s Board News Eleanor Gorman, Display Case Committee

We were pleased to hear comments of appreciation from residents for the April window. The window featured a variety of Christian and Jewish holiday items cherished by the Committee members. In addition, resident Maxine Wells’ beautiful porcelain figurine of "The Last Supper" highlighted the rest of the items. The backdrop photos of churches and cathedrals from around the world drew great interest. Next time we will label them sooner! The May window paid tribute to ARMED FORCES DAY by honoring all veterans for their valuable service to the United States. We wish to thank the following residents who loaned a cherished photo of either themselves or a spouse: James Andres, Mary Stoddard Arndt, Esther Bailey, Peter Boogaart, Mary Jean Brooks, Robert Carlson, Robert Conklin, Tom Dalgleish, Gerrit Hesselink, John Jasperse, Hulda Johnson, Robert Klinesteker, Emil Martinec, Betty Molenkamp, Mary Lou Skirvin, Harold VanAllsburg, and Shirley Zeagler. All photos will be returned on Monday, June 2.

Art Donations Are Welcome Stephanie Neal, Director of Major and Planned Gifts Fine art and collectibles exhibited throughout the public areas of Porter Hills enrich the lives of residents by providing comfortable and stimulating surroundings. The art wing of the recently renovated Health and Rehabilitation Center is a good example of where art donations promote a nurturing environment. A donor may generally take a charitable deduction for the fair market value of the art donation. Speak with your professional advisor about the tax rules for making your gift of art. To donate works of art and collectibles to the Porter Hills Foundation, please contact me at 616-309-1035.

Flower Planting Ana Galloway, Volunteer Services Coordinator 45 students and chaperones recently volunteered their time at Porter Hills Village. They planted over 150 flowers across our campus in areas including the Main Dining Room, the Health and Rehab Center, and Harmony Hall courtyards. Resident Louise Claver assisted the students in planting the flowers. The students were from the following schools: National Heritage Academy High School, East Grand Rapids Elementary, and East Grand Rapids Middle School.

How Do Allergies Effect Exercise? Kali Marshall, Wellness Fieldwork Student Spring is finally here! Do you have seasonal allergies? Don't let them bring your exercise routine to a halt. Your nose serves as an important function for your lungs; therefore, it is important that you keep your allergies under control when exercising. Some of the main allergies in the area that need to be monitored are pollen, grass, ragweed, and birch. A few of the symptoms that may affect your exercising are a stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and even sneezing. These symptoms may limit, or even completely eliminate, your normal exercise routine. Some things that can be done to lessen the severity of the allergy symptoms are to take an over-the-counter anti-histamine, use a neti pot, or use a nasal spray. If your allergies are very severe, you may even want to monitor the pollen levels in the area to determine the amount of outside activities that you can do. You can check the pollen levels in your area at www.pollen.com. Whatever the severity of your allergies, don't let them interrupt your exercise regimen!

Motorized Carts Marcy Emmelkamp, Social Services Coordinator If you are considering getting a motorized cart to assist with mobility challenges, please be reminded of the following procedures: Before getting a cart, residents are required to have a therapy assessment for safe driving. To do this, please have your doctor fax an order for: PT Evaluation for Power Mobility to: 974-1983 Attn: Temeka. When this evaluation is completed, residents need to review and sign the motorized cart forms with the manager in their area (for Independent Living, Marcy Emmelkamp; for Catered Living, Sarah McNees). After these steps are completed, residents are able to purchase and drive a motorized cart at Porter Hills Village. If there are safety concerns with operating a motorized cart, these steps may be reviewed again.

Friendly Reminder Heather Knouse, Wellness Coordinator for Independent Living Please refrain from slamming doors, especially in the early morning. Now that summer is almost upon us, windows will be left open. This typically causes doors to slam accidentally. Please be cognizant of this and use door stops or slowly pull your door closed when entering or leaving. The noise caused by slamming your door can be disruptive to your friends and neighbors. Thank you for your consideration.

Chaplain’s Corner

Did you happen to see the April 17 issue of Time Magazine? It featured a cover story by the brilliant preacher/theologian/professor Barbara Brown Taylor. The article followed her latest book, entitled “Learning to Walk in the Dark.” Barbara wrote something we all need to hear. She pointed out that people of faith can’t live in denial of the world around us, nor do we ever want to think of religion as a way to deal with the world as being what Marx described as “the opiate of the people.” We must live our lives in the world, replete with its harsh and hard realities. Ultimately, it is our faith that gives us the power to cope with (not to escape) that. Sometimes, Barbara Brown Taylor points out, it is in the darkness that we are encountered by “the light of the world” (John 8:12). Throughout history great leaders in politics, literature, and religion have wrestled with a sense of melancholy. John Adams, Agatha Christie, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Audrey Hepburn, William James, Michelangelo, Mark Twain, and even Mother Teresa and St. Paul had seasons of darkness and doubt. They did not give up or give in, but rather listened to the whispers they heard in the dark moments. Faith has never said that we escape the realities of life. Our faith teaches us that we find a presence who can navigate us through, helps us learn from them, and at last gives us victory over them. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, says the Lord,” Isaiah wrote. We must go through the darkness, and when we do we find God walking with us, holding us up. What’s your darkness out there? Mine is anything that scares me and makes me feel somehow absent from God, along with my fear of dementia and the loss of those nearest and dearest to me. I remember that God is with me in the good times and the not-so-good times, teaching me a valuable lesson in each. Perhaps Isaiah’s most important word is “THROUGH!” The dark moments of life are never permanent. God always leads us “through” them to light and healing on the other side.

Faithfully,

Melody Pierce Johnson
