JUNE 2014 SIVAN-TAMMUZ 5774 3
On June 4 to 5
we will be ob-
serving and cele-
brating the holiday
of Shavuot—the
revelation at Sinai and the giving of the To-
rah to the children of Israel. On Passover we
remember the moment of liberty and free-
dom from 400 years of bondage in Egypt as
we passed through the opened waters of
the Red Sea. As we journeyed through the
desert towards our ultimate destination of
the land given to our father Abraham, we
stopped at the foot of the fiery mountain of
Sinai in the presence of the tents of Jethro
to be sealed with the gift of revelation.
As Moses gathered all the tribes and fel-
low travelers below Sinai, the people were
terrified as they heard the voice of the
Master of the Universe and pleaded with
Moses to listen on their behalf. There is a
midrash that says that all the people heard
was the sound of the “silent aleph.” The
Ten Commandments in Exodus chapter 20
begin: “I am the Lord your God” with the
Hebrew word anochi starting with the let-
ter aleph (which is always silent).
After this penultimate event of revela-
tion, the people recite: “All the Lord has
spoke we will faithfully do!” This is the
famous phrase na’aseh v’nishma. Unfortu-
nately, most of those present at Sinai did
not take very long to nullify their pledge
by forging and worshipping the gold calf.
It then became the responsibility of the
next generation to fulfill their destiny as
they entered the land of Canaan and con-
tinued their transformation into a people
truly worthy of the gift of Torah that was
received at Sinai.
The continuity of the people of Israel
and Judaism is dependent upon this tran-
sition from freedom to revelation to com-
mitment. We, the 21st century descendants
of those who physically stood at Sinai,
are responsible for assuring that Judaism
is alive and well for many generations to
come.
The findings of the recent Pew Report,
“A Portrait of Jewish Americans,” have
created a great deal of angst, especially
among synagogue leaders and other Jew-
ish institutions across America. The num-
bers reflected a rapidly expanding base of
those who are intermarried, unaffiliated
and totally disinterested in “organized re-
ligion.”
However, there was one statistic that
stood out in the midst of all of this “bad
news.” Eighty percent (80%) of those sur-
veyed said that Judaism is an important
part of their lives. The question, of course,
is what they mean by “Judaism.” The an-
swers are all across the board, but they are
telling us that in some significant manner
or form there are a lot of Jews out there
who want and hopefully need a connec-
tion to Judaism. Some of these people are
I am sure members of our own kehillah at
MJCBY. It is a great tradition for Jews to
be searchers as well as experimenters in
adapting Judaism and Jewish life to the
times in which they live. Just look at the
rabbis of the first and second century
C.E. (after the destruction of the Second
Temple). Rather than see their existence
crumble in the face of no temple and no
priesthood, they transformed Judaism into
a new model that exists to this day.
We at MJCBY need to continually evalu-
ate the model within our own congrega-
tion and implement the “tweaks,” and in
some cases the more significant changes,
which may be needed both to keep us vi-
brant as a community and to create a home
for all seekers and searchers of a Judaism
that provides a sense of belonging and ful-
fillment. That is the type of commitment
our heritage requires of us. We owe it to
ourselves, our children and to the Jewish
community as a whole.
It is said that we were all present at
Sinai (past and future). The question re-
mains: Where are we today?
Mazel Tov to all of our graduates—from
Shalom Yeladim to college.

The Debt” weaves a tangled web of lies and deceptions around a seemingly
heroic raid in 1965 carried out by three agents of Mossad, the Israeli intel-
ligence agency known for more ability than it exhibits here. Their mission: Enter
East Berlin with secret identities, kidnap a Nazi war criminal and bring him to
Israel for trial. He is Vogel (Jesper Christensen), the notorious Surgeon of Birke-
nau, who conducted unspeakable procedures on his captives.
The film opens with the agents being welcomed on their return home to Israel.
They are David (Sam Worthington), Rachel Singer (Jessica Chastain, of “The Tree
of Life”) and Stefan (Marton Csokas). In scenes set in 1997, they will be played
by Ciaran Hinds, Helen Mirren and Tom Wilkinson. The later scenes involve the
publication of a book by Rachel’s daughter about the famous raid.

What do you think?About a mission to Cuba? About a trip to Europe geared for families with Bar and Bat Mitzvah age children? About an intergenerational trip to Israel?
We need to hear from you if any of these are of interest to you. We will organize an itinerary once we know there is interest.
The Cuba Mission may be planned for January or February of 2015. It would be 8 days and the cost per person would
approximately be $2500 with 20 people, not including air to and from Miami.
The trip to Europe might include stops in Munich, Amsterdam, and Prague and last 10 days. We would visit certain Holocaust-
related sites including Dachau and Anne Frank’s house. We would tour historical local sites. This trip would cost approximately
$5500 per person including round-trip airfare, children staying in parents’ rooms will be less, based on 25 participants. This might
take place in summer of 2015 or 2016.
An intergenerational trip to Israel could take place in late December 2015, or summer of 2015 or 2016 depending on interest.
This would be a 10-day trip with 8 days in Israel. Cost would be approximately $5500 per person, including round-trip airfare,
children staying in parents’ rooms will be less, based on 25 participants.
Contact Ellen Nesson at [email protected] or Rabbi Nesson at [email protected] if you are interested in any of the above.

It is with great pride that we invite the
congregation to celebrate the Bar Mitz-
vah of our son Cole, when he is called to
the Torah on June 7, 2014. Cole is a sev-
enth-grade student at Mendham Township
Middle School.
Cole is a passionate and fun-loving per-
son. He is passionate about music and
plays piano, trumpet and drums. Cole is
also an avid snow skier, waterskier and
wake surfer. His new sport is scuba diving!
For his mitzvah project, Cole is helping
at the Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham.
He has helped to raise money that goes to-
wards preserving the land for wildlife and
volunteers his time for cleaning trails and
planting trees. He has also been a volun-
teer for the Mendham Open Space Commit-
tee, which is dedicated to preserving farm-
lands, woodlands and historic and natural
areas in our community.
Cole’s parents and his brothers, Justin
and Russell, are so proud of Cole and his
accomplishments. They along with grand-
parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends
look forward to this special day.

Regina and Gene Shtirmer proudly in-
vite the Congregation to celebrate with
them as their son Daniel Lauren is called
to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June
14. Daniel is a seventh-grade high honors
student at the Hebrew Academy of Morris
County. Aside from being an A+ student,
Daniel enjoys painting, playing piano, ten-
nis and basketball. He also loves partici-
pating in school plays, spending time with
his friends, traveling and collecting snow
globes from every place he visits.
For his mitzvah project, Daniel chose
to collect arts and crafts projects for kids
who are patients at the Goryeb Children’s
Hospital in Morristown. This has been a re-
warding experience for Daniel, as he has
witnessed first hand how a small act of
volunteering can make a meaningful posi-
tive impact on a sick child’s life.
Daniel is also planning to volunteer at
a nonprofit art camp in the summer and
has signed up to volunteer with Habitat
for Humanity in the fall.
Daniel’s parents, his brother Ryan, and
his sister Natalie are so proud of him and
his accomplishments and are thankful to
share this joyous occasion with grandpar-
ents, great-grandparents, relatives and
friends!

School News
It is hard to believe that June has
“sprung” and the school year is coming
to an end! However, the learning and fun at
Shalom Yeladim continues this month as we
learn about the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot
is the day that Moses received the Ten Com-
mandments from G-d on Mount Sinai. The
Ten Commandments are G-d’s special rules
that show us how to live.
Children learn by doing so the SY children
will climb up on cardboard boxes where their
teachers will present them with stuffed To-
rahs. Back in their classrooms, the children
will write their own “Ten Commandments”
for school. These special rules will be posted
in the hallways. Please come in and take a
peek. We will read the book No Rules for Mi-
chael by Sylvia Rouss, which tells the story of
how Michael wishes more than anything that
there weren’t any rules. He is sure that school
would be much more fun without them. But
when his wish comes true, he discovers that
while he doesn’t have to share or take turns,
no one else does either and school is no fun
at all! It is truly the perfect Shavuot book!
It is tradition to eat dairy foods on Shavuot,
so we will enjoy a special ice cream snack on
Erev Shavuot. Yummy!
We will celebrate Father’s Day this month
by inviting all the dads in for a special cel-
ebration that promises to be a lot of fun.
Congratulations to the graduating class
and to the kindergarten class. We will miss
them terribly and wish them the best of luck
as they continue their educational journeys!
Thank you to all of our Shalom Yeladim
families for entrusting your children to our
care! It has been such a pleasure working
with them this year!
Have a safe and happy summer, and I
look forward to welcoming you back to
school in September!

I can’t believe that June is here and the
USY year is coming to an end. As I reflect
on my first year as MJCBY’s USY advisor, I
am very thankful that I have been able to
connect with so many of the teens at this

reaching more teens and parents to educate
them on everything that USY has to offer.
Applications for board positions are out,
and I look forward to the upcoming board
elections and am excited to see who will be
leading us next year. I would like to thank
the entire USY board (listed here) for all of
their hard work and dedication this year
and wish all of our graduating seniors good
luck in the future!
