The Wonders of God for A

Different Tomorrow in You!

Sons and Daughters in Light,

M ay I remind you that when God gets ready to accomplish His purpose in the saints, He creates a desire in us to go forward, and then He reveals the specific steps we must take.

You may be at a cross-road in your life at this time, and are not sure of what to do. I am led of the Lord to ask you for your personal inner examination, just you and God. Listen to the answer of courage:

“So the men said to her; ‘we will be blameless of this oath of yours which you have made us swear, unless, when we come into the land, you bind this line of scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down…” (Joshua 2:17-18 NKJV).

How do you feel about your tomorrow, your future? Are you expectant? A sure sign that you are in communion with the Living God is to believe in your future more that in your past. Because of your Spirit-baptism into the family of God, you are important to Him; today, and tomorrow. But what will be your response to this love epistle God gives to you through me? It will determine what your tomor-row will be like. Mothers and fathers; sons and daughters, do not hold yourself hostage for your past sinful actions. Let God shape your present, and believe in your future with Him. It is in our response to the serendipitous (blessings in things not sort for), interventions of God in your life situation. How about you and me---our tomorrow, our promised land, and any Jordan River standing in our way? The first step is the hardest. We must get our feet wet. Why are they so often dry, dirty with the dust of resistance? Step into your Jordan of tomorrow, today! Amen.

Until He Comes, I Am

Serving Christ Joyfully,

Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard

Parish under-shepherd

Councilman Larry J. Spicer

L arry J. Spicer is no stranger to SBC family, or the community of Monrovia because he is a native, born and raised in Monrovia; a member of SBC all his life (58 years). Mr. Spicer, or Councilman Spicer, is a man with many talents. More importantly, he is a Christian, a husband, a father, and a community leader. Larry has been married

to his lovely wife Delphine for 21 years, and is father to Savannah, Lawrence, and Lailah. In researching Councilman Spicer life, many interesting facts were revealed. After graduating from Monrovia High School, Larry enlisted in the Army, served 21 years and received a Military Defense Service Medal, and several Army Achievement Awards for outstanding service. But his service didn’t stop after retiring from the Army because he continued to serve his community, and his church. In 2011, he was the National Recipient of a Who’s Who in America’s Neighborhoods Award (NUSA) held in Alaska, and the Volunteer of the Year Award for the City of Monrovia. He’s a board member on Community Mediation Team; board member for “Make a Difference Day,” and Vice-President of the Monrovia Planning Commission; he is a coach for the Duarte Hawks Football Team and Parent-on-Patrol at Clifton Middle School; all before being elected Councilman of Monrovia, making him the third Black American to hold the position. As a member of SBC, he’s served in many ministries and auxiliaries; Trustee and Jubilee, but the fondest was being on the Pastoral Care Committee to Bishop Dillard. Larry’s role models were his father who taught him work ethics, and the late Pastor G. G. Bailey for spiritual guidance; mentor is Mayor Pro Tem, Lois Gaston, for his political career. Larry proudest accomplishments are being married to Delphine Spicer, his children, and being elected Council-man of Monrovia. Larry unwinds by working in his yard, where he spends hours. When asked what Super-Power he would like, the reply, “Superman because he has super-strength, super-speed, x-ray vision, flawless memory, and awesome six-packs.” A surprising fact that was revealed; in 1978, Mr. Spicer was given the opportunity by ex-Dodger Jim Lefebvre to try out for the Dodger Organization; he made it to play with the Dodger’s Traveling Team. Second’s Gazette is proud to Spotlight a Member who has served his church and community well. Congratulations Councilman Spicer!

Thanks to My Lord , and all your prayers for me!

My heart is full of gratitude to my Bishop, Lady Betty, and the entire congrega-

tion of SBC. Having gone through two major surgeries, in a nine-month

period, has allowed me to experience the overwhelming love shown through your

phone calls, prepared meals, visits, cards, prayers, and flowers.

When something comes from the heart, it goes back to the heart, and my Second

Baptist Church family has certainly touched my heart.

With Sincere Gratitude and love,

Mother Deloris Bridges

The 39th Jubilee of Love Celebration,

was a success; a grand occasion, including

entertainment with African Dancers, led by

one of SBC’s Elders, Louis Luyeye, to honor

our Bishop with Praise and Worship. Excite-

ment filled the sanctuary as Bishop Dillard

and First Lady Betty Dillard were intrigued

with the entire celebration.

Mother’s Day Luncheon

I ’m Every Woman … It’s the GOD in Me … The Greatest Love of All …. Whitney Huston, Mary Mary … Yes, their voices could be heard at the Annual Mother’s Day Lunch-eon that took place on Saturday, May 4, 2013.

The luncheon started with a trio welcome from a Mother-Daughter-Granddaughter (Ms. Sandra, Passion & Krista); fol-lowed by a humorous reflection of Words-of-Wisdom passed down from three generations of the Hackett family (Ms. Jua-nita, Tamara, Victoria, Keyera, Breana, Erika and Royelle).

SBC Children’s Ministry Praise Dancers danced to J Moss “We Must Praise Him” followed by a host of Karaoke Acts performed by our very own members (Ladies you know who you are). Be on the lookout, we hear some ladies are taking their acts to Ve-gas, Gospel style of course!

There was a moment of reflection to acknowledge the Home-Going of Mother Ester Pearl VanHook, and a tribute to our Mother’s Council. Guests dined well, enjoyed more Karaoke Acts, and shared interesting Bible facts during the Bible Trivia Game, moderated by Diakona Carrie Walker.

The luncheon ended with an exciting shopping experience at the Shopping Zone. Ladies and children who earned tickets throughout the luncheon had an array of fashionable purses, scarf’s, jewelry, home goods, and hats to select from. It was a blessed Mother’s Day Luncheon.

Justice for All

E pic events helped to shape the outcome of the Civil Rights Movement, but no event was more important then Brown vs. The Board of Education of Topeka. This case set a precedent that segregated schools were not “separate but equal” which Plessy vs. Ferguson established in the 1896 Supreme Court case. Many of us remember the history of this case, but we may not be unaware of the lawyer, the African

American man who fought to win this victory. This gentleman was none other than Justice Thurgood Marshall. Thurgood Marshall was born on July 2, 1908 in Baltimore Maryland. He attended Baltimore’s Colored High and Training School (later named Fredrick Douglass High School) and then went on to attend Lincoln Univer-sity in 1926. Upon graduating with honors from Lincoln University, he applied to the University of Maryland Law School where he was denied acceptance due to the color of his skin, although qualifying academically. Mr. Marshall went on to apply to law school at Howard University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1933. Due to his first hand experience with racial discrimination in education, Justice Marshall started working for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) where he constantly won cases against racial inequality, and helped him secure a reputation for excellence in these cases. On June 13, 1967, Mr. Marshall was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court; and on October 2, 1967, he was sworn in as the first African American Supreme Court Justice. Justice Marshall held this position for 24 years before retiring on June 27, 1991. Thurgood Marshall died January 24, 1993 at the age of 84. Over the course of Justice Marshall’s lifetime, he fought for equality in education, and equality in our everyday lives. Thurgood Marshall represented a history of African American’s who saw, felt, and knew injustice first hand, but he decided to change the course of history by standing firm in what he believed in. As Christians, we are to stand firm in what we believe in, which is God’s Word and not be swayed by the obstacles that we may face in this stance. If we, as believers, stand on the Word of God, can you imagine what the future would look like and how many Disciples of Christ we would have?

P hilippians 4:6-7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanks-giving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

This scripture reminds me that God is with me, even when I don’t feel Him! We know that feelings come and go, but God’s word remains the same. I see Him in other people work, and sometimes just doing day-to- living. I’m amazed at how the Lord continues to give me breath so I may breathe on someone else and help to restore their hope. I’m rejuvenated daily by the Bible, and other inspirational writings. God knows what we are in need of; but are we grateful for what He’s already done. It’s no secret how the Lord has changed my life; and everyone has a story (testimony), but some are ashamed, or afraid to share it. That does not always mean sharing with a microphone to world, but sharing with someone who needs to see that God brought you out; and that could be medicine for some body. I’ve heard countless stories of people who were just like me; and now they are in phenomenal careers and positions; some are even saved! So if God will do it for them, He’ll do it for you and me. So do not be anxious, be prayerful!

We’re saved by grace through faith alone, good works can

have no part; but God rewards each loving deed that’s done

with all our heart.

H ey SBC! Today I am bringing you someone who is a singer, songwriter, and praise and worship artist who has been blessed to minister around the world with a voice such as hers. Okay, without further ado,

this lady is Vickie Yohe. You might know Vickie by her song “Because of Who You Are.” She has been singing since the age of 5; and released her first album which was self-titled “Vickie Yohe.” In 2009, at age 19, she released her first live project. She began her own ministry outreach in Africa, Asia, and Europe, Yohe Missionary Minis-tries and opened an orphanage in Jinja and Uganda called “Destiny for Children,” which helps children who have been left alone due to the outbreak of the aids epidemic. This ministry was on her heart to help children who had no parents. Vickie ministry is based in Baton Rouge, LA. At the current time, she resides in Nashville, TN with her children. Something that you might not know about Vickie is that she does about 150 shows a year. Yohe says she is honored that God chose her as one of His vessels to minister in song. So SBC as always, please keep her and her family in your prayers that God will allow her to continue helping children in need. Alright be blessed in the Lord and in the fullness thereof. Amen! For now, I am out. ~Danielle~

G ood battles evil in this timeless story of Esther, a Biblical heroism. When Esther becomes King Xerxes's queen, her cousin Mordecai and the despicable Haman engage in a dan-gerous game of intrigue for control of the young Persian King Xerxes. It's no secret that Haman plans to exterminate the Jews. But Haman's plans include something horrible

for Mordecai and his people. It is up to Mordecai's niece Esther to win the affection of the King, unmask Haman's treachery, and save the Jewish people. Can Esther convince her husband to spare her people---even though she may be putting her own life at risk? To celebrate a century and a quarter, the Grammy Museum -- a class

joint in its own right, will again present an ongoing exhibit with the

same title featuring films, photos, interviews, artifacts and an interac-

tive jukebox playing Columbia's greatest sides. And who started all of

this? Thomas Edison, with his invention of the phonograph in 1877

directly led to the label's founding. It makes sense that the same cat

who gave us the light bulb left a legacy that includes Miles Davis.

By Jessie Anderson, R.N.

A s we approach summer and its heat, remember we need to drink water! But

how much water should one drink each day? It's a simple question with no direct answer, because over the years, studies show varying recommendations. But a per-son’s water needs depend on many factors, including ones health, how active one is,

and where one lives. Although no single formula fits everyone, knowing more about ones own body's need for fluids will help to estimate how much water one should drink each day. Water is the body's principal chemical component, and it makes up about 60 percent of body weight. Every system in the body depends on water, and the lack of water can lead to dehydra-tion, a condition that occurs when there isn’t enough water in the body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain one’s energy and cause body fatigue. Everyday water is lost from the body through breathing, perspi-ration, urine, and bowel movements. For the body to function

properly, it must be replenished with its water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water. So how much water does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake of water for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day; and for women, 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day. Everyone has heard the advice, "Drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day." That's about 1.9 liters, which are about the same recommendations from the Institute of Medicine. Although the "8 by 8" rule isn't supported by hard evidence, it remains popular because it's easy to remember. Just keep in mind that the rule should be re-framed as: "Drink at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day," because all fluids count toward the daily total. One may need to modify the total fluid intake depending on the activities, the climate, and health status; and if pregnant or breast-feeding. If you're concerned about your fluid intake or have health issues, check with your doctor or a registered dietitian. He or she can help you determine the amount of wa-ter intake that's right for you. To ward off dehydration and make sure your body has the fluids it needs, make water your beverage of choice. Now let’s test your knowl-edge of water!

1. How long can a person live without food? A person can live without food for

more than a month.

2. How long can a person live without water? A person can live without water for

only about one week, depending on conditions.

3. What percent of the human body is water? About 66 percent of the human body

is water.

4. How much of the earth’s surface is water? About 80 percent of the earth’s sur-

face is water.

5. How much water must a person consume per day to stay healthy? A person

must have about 2.5 quarts of water each day, which includes drinking, and in foods (like fruits and vegetables).

6. Of all the earth’s water, how much is ocean or seas? 97 percent of the earth’s

water is ocean or seas.

7. What is the most common substance found on earth? Water is the most com-

mon substance found on earth.

8. How much water does the average family household use during a year? Each

family household uses over 100,000 gallons of water a year (indoors and outdoors).

9. How much water does each person use per day (on average)? Each per-

son uses over 100 gallons of water every day (all uses).

time to assist with any task that come before this ministry

each year. Diane seems to never tire and is always depend-

able and ready to assist anyway she can. If it’s the Food
