As I write this, Sacramento County 4-H is preparing for its second fundraising breakfast and I’ve been busy sorting through pictures from this last program year to show at the event. File after file I open, each containing dozens of images of 4-H members and volunteers engaged in projects and meetings and trainings. There’s the Cooking Project in our Franklin Club; a first grader grinning ear-to-ear as she displays a wiggly worm during her 4-H YES lesson; a Laguna Creek Club member addressing her City Council; a young 4-Her struggling to hold his meat-pen chickens for judging at the County Fair last month. Each photograph brings back a memory and reminds me how much we have to celebrate. We have so much to be proud of here in Sacramento 4-H. We serve almost 1,700 young people through a variety of rich programs. We’re good at what we do and have been recognized as such. In this past year, our 4-H Mountain Horse Camp received a Golden Clover Award from California 4-H for Program Excellence. The California State 4-H office hopes to replicate our 12-week 4-H Water Wizards program in other counties this fall. And, 4-H On the Wild Side—the environmental education camp that brings urban youth to a weekend of doing science and living in nature—was honored as a National 4-H Program of Distinction. Such a fine program only happens through the energy of our dedicated volunteers, over 200 of you. You teach kids about swine and science. You plan our camps and work with our teen leaders. You edit our newsletter, drive on field trips, and cook in our camp kitchens. You coach, inspire, listen, encourage, and guide. You are role models living out the call “to larger service.” A great program is supported by excellent staff, and we could not have a finer one here in Sacramento. Jen, Trisha, Lisa, Joan and Stephanie support those working with kids on the front lines—delivering training, answering questions, building partnerships. I know all of us appreciate their skill and effort. So I look back on the pictures, I remember, and I am filled with both pride and gratitude. I am grateful for the incredibly dedicated people who have made this year happen, who are helping our program, and the youth we serve, grow. Thank you for all you give. Increase in 4-H Enrollment Fees for 2013-2014

The 4-H Enrollment Fees for the 2013-2014 year have been announced. The fees will be $34 for youth and $12 for adults. Short term enrollment fees will continue to be half of the full enrollment rate. The State 4-H Office announced last year that UC Cooperative Extension and 4-H at the state level is no longer able to absorb all costs and that fee increases were necessary to support our local programming. These program fees will be used to provide partial funding for direct local program support including critical 4-H staff that supports our local programs.

Sacramento County Record Book Judging

Saturday, August 17 9:00 a.m.— 2:00 p.m. UCCE 4-H Office It is the time of year to wrap up all that has been accomplished by our youth members for 2012-13 and compile it into a record book. Our County Record Book Judging will take place on Saturday, August 17. As in previous years, each club is to provide one judge per three record books turned in. Record Books will be due to the 4-H Office by Monday, August 12. This allows enough time to make sure we will be able to arrange for enough volunteers from each club. If a club does not provide the judges needed, the books submitted from that club are at risk of not being judged. Breakfast and lunch will be provided and arranged for by the All Star Team. To qualify to send your record book to the county for judging, the member must have completed at least their second year in 4-H (primary years do not count), earned a bronze star and received a goal seal on their record book at the club level judging this year. The gold seal must be affixed to the book and dated. For any questions or interest in helping with record book judging, please contact Jen Henkens.

Closing of the 4-H Year

Address new changes coming for this year.

Help you prepare to be organized for the 2013-14 club year.

Informational Braiding Clinic

The Franklin Horse Project sponsored a horse braiding clinic featuring Katie Penegar at the Hensley Ranch in Elk Grove on April 7th. It was open to anyone in the county to attend. She has been braiding professionally for seventeen years and has traveled all over the United States braiding at English horse shows.

Did you know that you don’t have to buy the expensive braiding kits? She used basic supplies that you can buy at your local grocery and craft stores! She made the clinic fun and informational. We learned how to prepare the horse’s mane and tail for braiding. Then she expertly braided one of our horse’s mane and tail. She was amazingly fast and did beautiful work! She said that braiding looks easy, but it is harder than it looks. It takes about two years before you become a proficient braider and your hands have to become conditioned to the pulling and tension. It takes awhile for your hands to become strong, so at the beginning your hands actually hurt! After watching her, we certainly believed her!

She explained the world of braiding to us and explained that there is a shortage of horse braiders! She mentioned that if anyone from the 4H horse projects are interested, she would be more than happy to teach you how to braid! She also encouraged us to watch her braid at the local shows. If this is something that interests you, email me at [email protected].
