Sandpoint Christian SchoolCELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF OUTSTANDING EDUCATION IN OUR COMMUNITY

Sandpoint Christian School is celebrating its 16th anniversary this summer! This school has a proud history of providing excellent academics and a firm spiritual foundation for their many students over the

years. Currently SCS offers preschool (3 and 4 year olds) through 12th grade on its spacious campus right on Highway 95 in Ponderay. What makes Sandpoint Christian School special and unique? There is a close family atmosphere at SCS. Children, teachers and parents work closely together to provide a safe, loving and dynamic learning environment for all students. Older and younger students get together to celebrate Chapel and special events like Living History Day, Christmas and Extreme Science Day. Older students have opportunities to read with younger students and mentor them like big brothers and sisters. Parents are encouraged to participate in their children’s education by volunteering in the classroom, chaperoning field trips and regularly talking with teachers. The smaller atmosphere means closer personal relationships and means more attention and help from the teacher. Recently some of SCS’s alumni were asked, “How did Sandpoint Christian School make a difference in your life? What kind of an impact did SCS have on your faith?” Their answers were heartfelt. Maize Oliver, a recent college graduate with a BS in Biological Sciences said, “SCS sheltered

me from ungodly influences at such an impressionable age and gave me a Bible foundation for my life. I learned from teachers who set a loving example of God’s grace.” Marcus Burt, an independent businessman said, “SCS has blessed me so greatly. The teachers are invaluable role models who create purpose and responsibility. SCS has laid a foundation for my life beyond what could be measured.” That has always been the goal and will always be the goal at SCS!

So what’s new at Sandpoint Christian School for the 2012-13 school year? For starters, they have a new Principal, Mrs. Elizabeth Page. Elizabeth originally comes from Coeur d’Alene. She went on to earn her BA in English Literature at University of Idaho in 1983, so she is a true North Idahoan. She plans to expand the high school curriculum, which uses the Switched On online program to include weekly hands-on science labs at each grade level as well as continuing their art, PE and music classes. There are plans to grow the off-campus high school program, which allows home-schoolers to take the online courses offered at SCS from home at a reduced cost.

Sandpoint Christian is currently enrolling for the 2012-13 school year. Call Elizabeth at 208.265.8624 for a campus tour. If you would like to partner with SCS in their endeavor to provide a school choice in our community please contact Elizabeth Page at the number above. Sandpoint Christian School – serving North Idaho families for 16 years by making a difference in the lives of children.

If you fish from shore, I am sure you share a desire to someday fish from a boat. The fishing opportunities open up dramatically when you have a boat. Shore anglers are restricted to public access areas that seem to be harder to find these days. Boats allow dramatically increased access

enhancing your fishing experience.

For many anglers a boat just does not fit into the family budget. If this is your situation, I would highly recommend you check out the inflatable pontoon boat. This boat can be purchased for as little as $250 and offer the angler an incredible value for the money. Unlike the inflatable boats that were available when I grew up, the pontoon boat is designed for the fisherman. There are numerous features that should interest the modern day angler.

The boats are lightweight so they can be carried short distances with rela-tively little effort. Short distance portages or carrying the boat from your transport vehicle to the water is relatively easy.

Most anglers prefer to maintain the boat in the assembled configuration rather than deflating and unassembling it after each use. Transporting the boat assembled will require some sort of transport vehicle. The boat usually will fit in the back of a pickup or on a small utility trailer so if you already have either of these items, transporting the boat to the water will not require added expense.

I have two of these boats and hang both of them from the ceiling of my garage. I keep them in the assembled configuration with the tubes slightly deflated to accommodate temperature changes. I can easily drop the boat into my pickup and off to the water I go. When I return home, I simply lift the boat to the hooks on the ceiling and they are stored once again.

Most models have some sort of an anchoring system. The model I have is fully rigged with an automated system. The anchor controls are right in front of me and easy to use with the anchor rope routed through the frame to the rear where the anchor is located. A slight tug releases the anchor and I simply replace the rope into the cleat once anchored. I don’t have to carry a heavy anchor with me. The system uses a bag that you fill with rocks. Genius!

Pontoon boats use oars as a system of propulsion and some are fitted with a small transom for mounting an electric motor. These systems require a robust and well designed frame. A well designed frame offers flexibility in oarlock and transom placement. The ability to move the transom from one side of the boat to the other accommodates both left and right handed anglers. Moving the oarlocks forward and back accommodates taller and shorter anglers. Foot rests should also be adjustable to the angler’s height. Look for these features when shopping.

For the boat to perform well, it needs to be properly inflated. When you put your boat into the water, the water will cool the air in your tubes reducing its volume and pressure reducing the effectiveness the oar system. Most boats only recommend 2-5lbs of pressure. That is not very much! You will need some sort of manual portable pump on board the boat so that the air pres-sure can be adjusted. Be careful not to overinflate!

The storage on pontoon boats is abundant. Most models provide more than adequate room for tackle, lunch and other items. Of course, the larger mod-els will provide more storage. If you are planning on taking tents and other camping equipment you will probably want a larger model.

I believe that the pontoon boat was originally designed for fly fishing and these boats are well configured for this. Many come with fly line trays and special locations for storing flies etc. If you are wondering about the dura-bility of these boats I can tell you that they seldom experience rips, tears or holes of any kind. The capabilities of pontoon boats are really unbelievable and it is really a great value. Check one out. I believe you will be impressed.

The Best Local Eats!

12 WWW.NEWSLINESONLINE.COM

Do you know how far the apple in your kitchen traveled before you picked it up at the grocery store? According to the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, apples in American grocery stores

typically travel 1,726 miles before reaching your kitchen! Just think about the fuel needed to transport produce like this across the country or across borders. Also think about the pollution generated by the vehicles carrying this produce. An apple a day may keep the doctor away but the fumes accompanying it will definitely hurt us!

The impact on the environment is one issue, but we also have to worry about preservatives that are used to keep this apple nice and crispy during its very long journey to your grocery store. To keep produce fresh during the long haul across continents and oceans, produce companies have to use chemical preservatives. It is well documented that preservatives are hazardous to human health.

So what can we do? Well, you can try your best to buy local produce whenever possible. Since produce from your local farms are traveling very short distances there is less pollution created in their transport. There is also less packaging and processing involved which also helps to lessen the amount of garbage we put into the environment and ourselves!

It really is enjoyable to mix up your food shopping routine by purchasing your fresh produce and meats at your local farmers’ market. In many cases you can negotiate prices (which is fun). Also fellow shoppers are generally in a happier frame of mind when they’re perusing farmer’s booths than when they’re steering a shopping cart through crowded aisles at the grocery store.

Find out the location of your nearest farmers’ market, note the dates that they are open and plan to be there bright and early to get the freshest, tastiest food choices of the day! Your family will thank you, you’ll be supporting your local economy and helping to save the environment.

Know About Your Health SupplementsWHY HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS ARE IMPORTANT TO YOUR DIET

People are usually under the impression that the body receives sufficient minerals and vitamins through their diet. However, this is not always true. It is sometimes very important to use health supplements

to compensate on the deficit of vitamins and minerals.

Health supplements can be purchased from the general pharmacy stores or from the many online stores available in the World Wide Web. All you have to do is to choose the health supplement that best suits your vitamin and mineral needs. It is not only the athletes who need health supplements; people suffering from ailments need health supplements to develop a natural immunity and resistance to the ailment. The pregnant woman, lactating woman and senior citizens also need health supplements. Pregnant and lactating women need health supplements to provide themselves and their child with sufficient nutrients. Senior citizens generally reduce their food consumption with age; because of this, the nutrients to the body tends to decrease. Health supplements help to compensate this deficiency.

Health supplements are generally considered to be safe. However, it is always advisable to take health supplements that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This helps you to make sure that the health supplements are safe and do not have any side effects. There are some health supplements that are not advised for teens as they are hazardous to them as they have steroids that cause damage to the body. When taking health supplements, watch out for any warning signals or possible side effects such as headache, rashes, stomach discomfort and dizziness. This is because some health supplement may constitute ingredients that may prove to be allergic to some people.

It is important to take health supplements in their stipulated dosage. Taking too much of vitamins and minerals is not advisable. Always consult your physician before starting on any health supplements as there are some health supplements that may affect any medication that you are taking. Some people use energy bars as health supplements. However, though this is good for athletes who burn lots of calories, they can turn out to be additional calories to the average person!

Nowadays, people have become more health conscious and are aware of the benefits of health supplements. Along with health supplements, it is important to have as varied and balanced diet as possible. Remember, health supplements are meant only to act as additional nutrients to the body and not as the only food to the body!

Neurofeedback is an alternative natural therapy that is non-invasive, non-phar-maceutical, and requires almost no effort on the part of the trainee. Also known as EEG Biofeedback It can train brainwaves to develop and utilize more efficient neural pathways. In doing so the brain is taught to get “in the zone” and function at peak performance levels. Since the brain is our master regulator, quality of life may be improved in a variety of ways. Studies have shown statistically significant improvement in pain, sleep, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks, night-mares, seizures, migraines, memory loss. Evidence also supports improvements in behaviors associated with attentiveness, impulsivity, resistance, distractibility, even IQ is often improved. UCLA studies show that, coupled with Rehab, Coun-seling, or a 12 step program Neurofeedback training can reduce the incidence of addiction relapse by up to 77%. Under a Doctor’s supervision some are able to

reduce or eliminate the need for certain medications. Neurofeedback trains the brain to improve mental focus, peak performance, and quality of life for students, athletes, professionals, seniors, and anyone who wants to reduce their stress, think more clearly, and perform better in their daily life. Something for Seniors to Smile AboutBROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BRIDGE AT SANDPOINT

A generation ago, dentures and bridgework were all too common among U.S. seniors. Today, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans are keeping their natural

teeth longer. In part, seniors can thank endodontists, the dentists who specialize in performing root canal treatment and saving natural teeth.

Endodontists’ advanced training and access to cutting-edge technologies allow them to save older teeth that once were considered hopeless. As people age, the canals inside their teeth narrow, making tooth-saving procedures more difficult. Using new technologies, such as ultrasonics and operating microscopes, endodontists can locate even the smallest canals to remove inflamed pulp and nerves and preserve natural teeth. Digital imaging, which is used in place of traditional X-rays to take pictures of teeth, is another tool that significantly increases endodontists’ ability to find the cause of pain in even the narrowest root canal.

“Endodontists are accustomed to working within a very small space,” says Dr. Marc Balson, D.D.S., president of the American Association of Endodontists. “Our background, which includes four years of dental school followed by two to three years of advanced training, allows us to perform root canal treatment efficiently on any patient.”

During root canal treatment, the endodontist removes the inflamed or infected pulp (the soft tissue inside teeth), carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the canal (a channel inside the root), then fills and seals the space. A well done root canal is like a solid foundation in a house - it allows for further restorative work to be done on a tooth with a likelihood of long-term health and stability.

Endodontists’ training also helps them deal with seniors’ special medical needs. The same prescription medications that allow older Americans to lead healthier, more active lives can pose problems when it comes time to undergo dental procedures. Endodontists routinely conduct a thorough assessment of elderly patients’ medical histories in preparation for root canal treatment, so as to avoid harmful drug interactions and safely treat patients with high blood pressure and other chronic conditions.

The most important advantage endodontists offer older patients is experience. On average, endodontists perform 25 root canal treatments each week, while general dentists perform two. This means that seeing an endodontist for root canal treatment is the healthiest way for seniors to avoid dentures, bridgework or artificial implants and preserve their smiles for a lifetime.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE

Don’t Let Ticks Take You for a RidePROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR PETS FROM TICKS

As your family and pets enjoy the great outdoors this season, be careful to protect yourselves from bloodsuckers looking to take you for a ride.

Ticks are parasitic insects that survive on the blood of other animals and can transmit disease. They are found in heavily vegetated areas throughout the world and especially in the northeastern United States. Tall grass and shrubbery in these areas provide ticks with access to passing animals and humans.

According to experts at Orkin, ticks don’t need to feed very often; adults can survive for three years without a meal. When they do feed, however, the effects can be severe for their hosts.

Lyme Disease is among the most threatening infections ticks spread. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States.

Deer ticks obtain Lyme Disease bacterium from the blood of white-footed mice and white-tailed deer. Most human cases of Lyme Disease are reported in the spring and summer months, when both tiny nymphal ticks and people are most active outdoors.

In addition to Lyme Disease, ticks can carry diseases such as Colorado Tick Fever, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia.

“Because of the health concerns ticks create, tick prevention and treatment should be taken seriously,” says Orkin, Inc. entomologist Ron Harrison, Ph.D. “Vigilance can be your most effective weapon against tick bites.”

Experts Recommend the Following Tick Tips:

• Carefully check your entire body and your pets promptly after being outdoors. Remember that young ticks can be very small.

• When outdoors, wear repellent and long sleeves, pants and socks to protect exposed skin. Light-colored clothing will help you spot them more easily.

• Reduce tick populations by clearing shrubbery and mowing grasses. Separate play and wooded areas with a protective mulch boundary.

• If you find a tick attached to your skin, use fine-tipped tweezers to remove it below the head. Contact a physician if signs of an infection, such as fever or rash, appear.

If you suspect a tick problem around your home, contact a licensed pest management professional to identify and treat infested areas.

Casey Bottomley, a junior, plays softball as a starting pitcher or 1st baseman for Sandpoint High School. She has been playing softball for seven years now and hopes to continue in college. Bottomley made the Academic Honor Roll the three years that she has

attended Sandpoint High and hopes to achieve the same accomplishment next year as well!

Her plan for the future is to become a Veterinarian. Casey definitely plans on going to college; undergraduate and then a specialty school for Veterinary practices. She has been looking at colleges back in the San Diego area of California where she is from originally, and also in Arizona. Her worst practice was probably the one during last year’s season. “We had just lost a double-header to a team that we could have easily beaten if we really put our effort into it, but the team wasn’t focused and we couldn’t pull it together,” said Casey. “So the next day, we had a practice that consisted of 98% running and the other two percent was a lecture from our coaches about how the team needed to come together more. It wasn’t a good day for the Lady Bulldogs Softball Team.”

Kevin Kirby, a senior at Sandpoint High School, has a 3.7 GPA, is in the National Honors Society and has lettered in tennis 4 years in a row on the Varsity Tennis Team. “It was exciting to win District Singles all 4 years and then find out it is a school record!” exclaimed Kevin. Kevin also made it to State his four years of high school as well, placing in the top 10 at State all 4 years, and as high as 5th. Throughout his time at Sandpoint High School, he has also competed in many non-high school USTA Tournaments for ranking points. “This helped me get recognized by and recruited to play tennis for Whitworth University, which is a fine Division 3 school in Spokane,” said Kevin. In the warm weather months, pet owners should take some precautions because it’s during these months that pets are more likely to be injured, suffer from heat stroke or be affected by a number of other ailments.

“Pets are treated more frequently in the warm months due to their increased exposure to the outdoors. Warm weather exposes pets to more insects, higher temperatures and bodies of water, such as swimming pools, lakes and oceans,” says Dr. Carol McConnell, director of veterinary education and services for Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI). “High temperatures can lead to sunburn and heatstroke. Exposure to swimming pools can lead to ear infections or-worse-case scenario-a pet accidentally falling into a pool and drowning.”

Dr. McConnell says her company sees a significant spike in veterinary claims during the warmer months. In February of 2005, for instance, her company paid on 12 claims that involved a pet stepping on an object such as glass and injuring its paw. That number jumped to 76 claims in June and 87 in July. Some of these injuries most likely required surgery, which averages about $574 for canines and $337 for cats.

Dr. McConnell suggests offsetting those costs by keeping a watchful eye on your pet and by purchasing pet insurance.

“Protecting your dog or cat with a pet health insurance policy is not only a smart decision prior to warm weather months, but all year round,” she explains. Many company’s insurance plans cover dogs, cats, birds and exotic pets for thousands of medical problems and costly procedures relating to accidents, illness or injury. Optional vaccination and routine care coverage are available as well.

WALK THE LINEA cop is doing standard patrol when he notices a car swerving all over the road. He quickly turns on his siren and pulls the guy over. “Alright,” says the cop, when the man gets out of the car. “Walk in a straight line.” “I’d be happy to,” says the drunk “just stop moving the stupid line.”

NEW DRUM SETIt was Timmy’s 5th birthday and he was joyfully opening all the presents he received. He saved the biggest for last, so it took a while until he got to opening Grandma’s present. “Wow” Timmy exclaimed in delight, upon seeing the mini drum set that his Grandmother got for him. “Thanks Grandma this is just what I wanted.” It was after Timmy went to bed that Timmy’s mother approached her mother. “Ma, I’m surprised at you, don’t you remember how it used to drive you crazy when we used to play the drums in the house growing up?” Grandma smiled and then said “I remember, of course I remember.”

BUSINESS DINNERThe business I work for had a dinner together with all family members. Before the first speech, the emcee gave the following announcement, “We kindly ask if you can please put all cell phones and children on silenced”.

VEGETARIAN SOCIETYThe leader of the vegetarian society just couldn’t control himself anymore. He just needed to try some pork, just to see what it tasted like. So one summer day he told his members he was going on a vacation. He packed out of town, and headed to the nearest restaurant. After sitting down, he ordered a roasted pig, and impatiently waited for his delicacy. After just a few minutes, he heard someone call his name, and to his great surprise he saw one of his fellow members walking towards him. Just at that same moment, the waiter walked over, with a huge platter, holding a full roasted pig with an apple in it’s mouth. “Isn’t that something,” says the leader after only a moments pause, “all I do is order an apple, and look what it comes with!”
