Marilyn Gearhart writes:

My mother, Joan

Hagerty, is now living

with me. Last Thursday

(April 26th) Lee Atkinson

came to our rescue when

we needed some house-

hold chores done.

Having had surgery

myself on the 20th and with my Mom's current health

condition, vacuuming and other things were simply

impossible for us to do. Since moving to Indiana in

1960, we have never had a church that has been so car-

ing and helpful. The willingness of the church and espe-

cially Lee to help us brought tears to my eyes. Others

from the church have also stepped forward, such as

Lynne Hodges who called the church to ask for help for

us, Marlene Rice who volunteered to run errands for us

and stay with my Mom when I need to leave for city

council meetings and other obligations, Helen Wappes

who helped me with some obligations last Saturday, and

several others who don't attend our church but have

stepped up because of those I've mentioned. To

everyone: THANK YOU! You have demonstrated God's

love for my Mom and me in a most touching way.

Charlie Collins writes: Thank you to all of our church

family who sent cards, visited me in the hospital and

called on the phone, but most of all thank you for all of

your prayers. I still need them. A special thank you to

our ministers, Ted and Dale, who visited me several

times while I was still in the hospital. We are a very

loving and caring church family.

June 3: Communion celebrated. High school graduates recognized at 8:30 a.m.; slide show shared at 10:45 a.m. Tables begins in the Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. (See the front page for more details.)

June 10: “Truth for Living” at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m.

June 17: Father’s Day, with a gift for every man 18 years old and older.

June 24: Celebration of Women Sunday, featuring a Ladies Choir under the direction of Richard Patton.

June Worship Highlights

First Church’s annual Strawberry Festival is Wednesday, June 13 from 4-6 p.m. Enjoy a tasty dinner, complete with strawberry pie and sundaes! The suggested donation for dinner is $6, with proceeds going to missions!

Strawberry Fest is June 13!

The Older, Wiser Leaders (OWLs), for ages 55 and older, will host a summer picnic on June 14 at noon at Rieke Park. Chicken will be provided. Bring a dish to share! After lunch, it will be time for fellowship and Bingo! Sign up in the gathering area at the back of the sanctuary so that enough chicken can be ordered.

First Church is involved in a

variety of missions. Here’s

what we’re doing:

In April, First Church made

$5,771 from the annual ham

loaf project. Missions money

went to: Northeast Indiana

Church Camps ($1,850); support for missionaries,

Vances and Enrights ($5,000); Indiana tornado

relief ($120); Operation Classroom ($1,025); Unit-

ed Methodist Committee on Relief ($250);

McCurdy School ($30); Africa Mission Team

($800).

Janelle Graber writes: On behalf of the Eckhart

Public Library, I wish to thank the congregation

for their generous gift of $1,200. We are honored

to be a recipient of this donation from your Easter

offering. Our library was notified by the Indiana

State Library that our 2012 LSTA technology grant

application had been awarded. The mobile laptop

lab will allow us to hold instructional sessions in

any of the four buildings on the EPL campus. As

well, we are most excited to expand the technolo-

gy instruction and add programs outside the con-

fines of the library. The mobile lab will be opera-

tional this summer. We will be starting basic com-

puter instruction classes on June 11, 2012, at the

library. We are pleased that you had the vision to

provide technology outreach to our community

by partnering with Eckhart Public Library.

Debbie Leon of Shelter Ministry food & clothing

writes: Thank you so much for the donations of

ground pork and Ham Loaves! We appreciate

your generous spirit at First Church.

Shelter Ministries has urgent needs. The food

bank needs cereal, peanut butter, macaroni &

cheese, box dinners, noodles, rice and box pota-

toes. The food bank is open Mondays from 2:30-

6:15 p.m. Financial Community Assistance also

needs funds. They are open Monday, Wednesday

and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Shelter Ministry is

also selling cookbooks for $10 each, partnering

with Walmart on the project.

Relay for Life was a great success! The congrega-

tion raised more than $900 for the American Can-

cer Society.

The Mission Team to Africa, Galen Eberhart, Lyd-

ia Jansen and Ted Jansen, will be in Africa July 27-

August 10. They will be serving at Kafakumba Cen-

ter, partnering with Rev. Ken and Deb Vance and

Rev. John and Kendra Enright. Please pray for

them, and join us as we commission the team on

Sunday, July 22.

First Church has BIG Goals

for 2012!

Believe: 15 professions

of faith

Grow: 350 people as an

average worship attend-

ance; 27 small groups

Impact: 40 people en-

gaged in mission;

$100,000 given to mis-

sions

First Church needs volunteers! Pastor Allison is looking for a team of people to serve as a Creative Arts Team helping to coordinate and dream ideas for the Tables worship service on Sunday evenings. If you are interested in more information about this opportunity, please contact her at [email protected] or 925-0885.

Love coffee? Love people? Tables, our Sunday evening worship service, is

looking for people willing to serve as baristas in the coffeehouse! No experi-

ence necessary, just a willingness to learn! Please contact Josh Yankey

at [email protected].

The United Methodist Women are hosting a Garden Party 2012, a mini-retreat for women of all ages, on Saturday, June 23, at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The party will feature Crown of Beauty Ministries—speaker Pat Harris and musician Lindsey Helmer—presenting Joy in the Journey, based on John 10:10. The cost is $12, and includes morning snacks, lunch and door prizes.

Reservations are due June 17. To reserve your spot, contact Susan Steinman at 925-6954.

Garden Party is June 23! Become a Prayer Partner!

We are looking for First Church members to pray for our staff members! We are inviting people to pray for our staff members once a month for six months. If you’re interested, please fill out a Prayer Partner form, located in the gathering area at the back of the sanctuary, or contact Pastor Ted at [email protected].

Fine Arts camp is June 25-29, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. If your child, or a child you know, is in first grade through eighth grade, get them signed up soon! Registration ends June 1.

Fine Arts Camp introduces children to a variety of musical and visual arts experiences in order to make them aware of the unique talents that God has giv-en them and give them a safe place to discover new ways to express themselves.

Dr. Hunter gave a great presentation on Sunday, April 29. We were all challenged and inspired to grow and keep reaching out to others.

A task force, comprised of Jerry Garrison, Jeff Turner, Tim Mondor, Lisa Kesse, Allison Yankey, Marilyn Gearhart and Ted Jansen, is looking at all the possible action plans.

The task force will work with people and groups to submit back to Dr. Hunter what we seek to do based on the recommendations. These will be shared with the congregation as we move our church to action and seek to fulfill our mission and purpose; “to make disciples.”
