Dear Readers,

The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay started from Land’s End on 19th May 2012. While the preparations for 2012 Summer Olympic Games in full gear, with the city expected to welcome over 10,000 athletes from 204 participating countries, the world is anxious not only to watch the records and medals, but also to check on how green are the ‘most sustainable Olympics ever’.

The event is going to be a priceless experience for sports-lovers but at the same time it is also hoped that it would stand for unveiling new benchmarks on orga-nizing a green, sustainable global event, amidst thou-sands of spectators and millions of movements and activities. From building to transportation, food court to recycling waste, carbon emissions to habitat conserva-tion to water recycling, everything has been covered under the realm of sustainability. Recycling and re-use have remained the core areas of focus for the organiz-ers of the games and the recycling rate is estimated at nearly 70 per cent, which would be remarkable indeed. The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has set a target of 50 per cent cut in carbon emissions compared to if the Olympics was conducted in a business-as-usual manner. This is assumed to be achieved through a combination of energy conservation and using green electricity suppliers.

Besides the Olympics, June 2012 also remained sig-nificant due to the celebration of the 40th World Envi-ronment Day (5th June 2012). The day was celebrated world over with commemorating acts marking the 40th anniversary of UNEP. Interestingly, the theme this year was “Green Economy : Does It Include You?” where Green Economy has been expressed as an economy which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially in-clusive.

Needless to mention that the theme proves to be a booster dose for platforms such as Bio-Energy Council of India that aims at promoting bio-energy as a clean and sustainable source of energy. With sustainability top of mind all over the world, let’s pledge to opt for becoming green as much as possible !

Thank You.
