The mission of the Pride Rock Wrestling Club is to promote interest in the sport of wrestling among our community. We will endeavor to create an atmosphere and instruction that will enable program participants to use wrestling as a learning tool to develop invaluable life skills such as self-awareness, discipline, integrity, and respect.

Our objective is to provide program participants instruction on the basic skills and techniques used in amateur wrestling. We encourage responsible physical and social interaction in a safe friendly environment.

Introductory programs are now being offered through Redwood City Parks & Recreation to provide opportunity for local youth to experience wrestling prior to entering high school.

PRACTICE: Tuesday & Thursday (6/19 through 8/9)

TIMES: Elementary Session (K - 5th) 9:00am - 10:00am

Middle School Session (6th - 8th) 10:30am - 12pm

LOCATION: Sequoia High School Gym 3 (by the pool)

Students Honored for English ProficiencyOf the roughly 9,200 students served by the Redwood City School District, slight-ly more than half are considered English learners� These are students with a limited mastery of the English language, which can compromise their potential to learn new concepts and complete required coursework on pace� Part of the district’s mission of educating every child for success, naturally, involves promoting English fluency for all students�Every spring, the district honors English learner students who have been deemed pro-ficient in English. This represents a major accomplishment for these students and their families, and often two separate events must be held in order to accommodate all the students, their parents and other relatives, and proud teachers and other district staff in an auditorium� In the 2011-12 school year alone, an incredible 673 students, including representation from all 16 schools in the district, were reclassified, requiring four separate recognition ceremonies� This was the most ever to reclas-sify in a single school year in district history� Numbering among the native languages of these students are Spanish, Hindi, Russian, Vietnamese, Tongan, Turkish, Thai, Canton-ese, Mandarin, Urdu, Korean, Tagalog, Japa-nese, Danish, French and Greek�“We have never seen so many students achieve reclassification in just one school year,” said Director of English Learner Ser-vices Rosemarie Pérez� “And we couldn’t be prouder of these students, who have worked so hard toward this milestone in their life and education� It is clear evidence that the programs and strategies we have in place to support these students in acquiring the English language are working� These students now have the necessary tools to be suc-cessful in high school and beyond – we really believe there is no limit to what these kids can do�”What does it mean to reclassify? Reclassification is a district-level determination made on a student-by-student basis based on established criteria by the school board in com-pliance with applicable state law� School districts take into account the student’s in-dividual scores on the CELDT (California English Language Development Test), an assessment administered statewide� Other criteria considered are the comparison of the English learner’s progress in basic skills as compared to the level of progress of students who are native speakers of English within the same age group, teacher evalu-ations, and the opinions of and consultations with parents or guardians�This year’s four ceremonies were held over two days, March 19th and 26th� Students were presented with Certificates of Recognition and gold star pins, and shook hands with school board trustees, the district superintendent and other administrators, their principal, and officers representing the District’s English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC)� Some even had the opportunity to have their picture taken with Redwood City Mayor Alicia Aguirre� School Board President Hilary Paulson, who herself addressed students and parents in both English and Spanish, said: “To have achieved biliteracy will prove a huge advantage to these students as they grow and become our future community leaders and tomorrow’s entrepreneurs� We truly hope that while they continue to develop and perfect their reading, writing and speaking skills in English, that they will at the same time maintain fluency in their first language.”

Giving to the RCEF is a perfect way to provide good customer service and help build a strong school system for the benefit of everyone in our city�”Long-time RCEF volunteer and newly minted realtor Diane Martin, has already com-mitted to sponsoring the 4th of July Parade Run and OktobeRun, and looks forward to making further contributions to the RCEF� “I love being able to help our community,” she says, “plus the relation-ship between real estate and schools is a pretty obvious one� Everybody is aware of the fact that homes near good schools have high value� Im-proving our schools through a contribution from my sales is just good business sense as far as I am concerned�”Other realtors, such as John Sieling, also contribute by sponsoring events such as Benefit for a Brighter Future. Redwood City’s After-School SportsBy Julie CroteauSchool sports may look a little different these days, but parents looking for after-school sports for their children have some great choices� We spoke with Erin Nie-meyer, Recreation Coordinator for Redwood City about the status of after-school sports in our town�Do Redwood City elementary and middle schools have sports teams?Yes! Students in the Redwood City School District have the opportunity to partici-pate in sports for their school� The Redwood City After-School Sports Program is a year-round, school-based sports program that is provided by the Redwood City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department, in collaboration with the Sheriff’s Activities League, the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, and supported by the Redwood City Police Activities League� How much does it cost?It varies by sport, but most sports only cost $50 dollars� In most cases, this includes an eight-week season, a team jersey and a school T-shirt� Some sports (like in-door soccer) are less expensive and some sports (like golf) are more expensive� But, we never want to turn a child away, so we of-fer scholarships or pay-ment plans for those who qualify�What grade levels are included in the school sports?Most of our sports are offered to children eight years and older, and start in 4th grade� There are a few sports that begin at a younger age� The Jr� Giants Baseball program is offered to children as young as five years old and the Jr. Dribblers Basketball is offered beginning in the 2nd grade�Which sports are available?We offer a variety of sports throughout the school year and over the summer� Fall
