A letter from PAstor CrAig

as I head down to Dorothy Day Center for loaves and fishes with a carload of cookies made by compassionate hearts at rlC, I’m reminded of the ongoing hands and feet of Christ by rlC members. two hundred will be fed a taste of rlC and Christ’s love. beth rein-hart and Dorothy borgstrom have been faith-ful leaders of this work along with a team of regulars who are great to work with. I might encourage you to look around and about to see what we often assume or expect to happen. god is at work among us.

as we gather together on June 27 for our annual meeting, it is an excellent time to remember and recognize the faithful work of this outpost in Christ’s kingdom called rlC. I would love to see several hundred that morn-ing to affirm and approve what god is calling us to do.

are you ready to roll or walk or run? last year over 400 participated. I hope you’ll be one of them this year. the gun goes off at 10:10 a.m. on sunday, June 13. outdoor worship will be at 11 a.m. followed by a wonderful picnic lunch. Congregational life has its challenges, but it is a true gift of god. I’m discovering that – again and again.

pastor Craiglead pastor

rlC has been a partner in ministry with lyngblom-sten Care Center for 35 years. that’s a long relationship and one that is appreciated so very much. rlC was one of the con-gregations recognized for its long and faithful partnership at their annual meeting. lisa Edstrom, rlC member who serves as chair of lyngblom-sten’s Church relations Com-

mittee, presented us with a beautiful geranium. I was sitting with our delegates, bev bybee, Janice Walker and linda borg-strom, and enjoying a very festive evening of celebrating their 50th anniversary. our speaker for the evening was Dr. Walt sun-dberg, professor of church history at luther seminary. he lifted up the model of congregational life in the united states and how significant that is. It was great to be reminded of what I take for granted. the congregation is a very unique, independent body that functions with a dedicated group of Christian servants who devote themselves to keeping things running. Dr. sundberg was so right. It is quite remarkable how this place continues to do faithful work in Christ’s name.

this was pointed out to me by a couple of our newest mem-bers. as Cindy, our daughter, anne, and I were enjoying the gos-pel Concert here on saturday evening, they leaned over to me at intermission and said, “We had no idea how much we became a part of when we joined this congregation.” they were all smiles. they put a beautiful glow on my face. they reminded me of what I often take for granted. they opened my myopic eyes to see a bigger and more beautiful picture through their eyes.

Deadlines. tick…tick…tick. reminders pop up on my com-puter telling me about places I’m supposed to be at, people I’m supposed to have called and things I’m supposed to have done.

for all of us, this time of year is more than busy. our days are packed full – with work, kids sports banquets, required school projects, graduation open houses and the garage cleaning that goes with them. If you are like me, it seems that every organiza-tion you are part of is planning a spring gala or a strategic plan-ning retreat, and all of them need your help. there is far more to do each day than can be accomplished even with all 24 hours of both your and my time each day.

our inability to do everything by ourselves is one reason we form communities. We live together in towns and cities, and share infrastructure so we don’t all have to dig our own wells or plow our own streets. We share resources and wisdom in learn-ing communities - schools. We bring together our time and finan-cial resources to fight all forms of community threats, including disease (Walk for the Cure) and the injustice of poverty (Meals on Wheels; loaves and fishes).

In the community of roseville lutheran Church, we gather together to worship god and to organize our efforts to serve as his hands and feet in this world. Working side by side, we accomplish far more than each of us could ever do individually. We build schools in slovakia and tanzania. We feed the hungry. We clothe and care for those who suffer from natural and man-made disasters. We drape prayer shawls, lovingly knit together by individuals with only 24 hours in each of their days, around the shoulders of those who grieve or are afraid or who just need to feel the warmth of another person’s caring touch. We stock and restock and stock again the food shelf in our area, so that kids and their families can have nutritious meals even if they

don’t currently have the financial means to buy groceries.

Minutes and hours will continue to tick by throughout our days, and we will continue to use them to check off all that we can from our daily to Do lists. as we do so, let us be continu-al reminders to each other that we are a community of and in Christ, and that together we can do all things through him who strengthens us. [philippians 4:13] as members of the commu-nity of roseville lutheran Church, lets join our hands together to make the work lighter and the outcomes better for everyone with whom we share this world.

thank you for sharing with me in the honor of working as a member of god’s community at roseville lutheran Church.

prayers for those In the mIlItary

the staff at rlC received this kind note recently:

If you have a friend or relative in the military, please contact the church office (phone: 651-487-7752) with their name and address. they are in our prayers and we stay in contact with these individuals during their deployment, this ministry is very important to rlC. thank you.

south parkIng lot entrances

are you wondering what all the white circles are for in the beds next to the south entrances? last fall during the upgrading of roselawn ave-nue, property owners were asked to install rain gardens. rain gardens divert water from the gutters back into the soil thus having less storm water run off go into the Mississippi river, the City of roseville paid for all the plants and mate-rials for each garden with the property owners doing the work. our problem was that rlC’s gardens were not ready for planting until mid-october and most of the plants came as “plugs” about the size of a man’s thumb. We then need-ed to add 5-7 inches of shredded mulch, which would have totally buried the tiny plants. these white plastic circles are protecting the tiny plants as they hopefully sprout and grow. the plants and we thank you for your patience in this matter and they will be removed as soon as the plants are viable enough to allow this to be done.

Dear Roseville Lutheran

Family, our son, Bryan

Eickelberg, has returned from

Afghanistan and completed

his military career. Thank

you for your words of support

and encouragement, and most

importantly your prayers.

Dale and Lorna Eickelbergemeral ash bore

you are probably hearing a great deal about Emerald ash bore. the City of roseville with experts from the u of MN recently held an excel-lent informational meeting for roseville resi-dents and invited surrounding suburbs. If you have ash trees in your yard do Not prune them! pruning will open passageways for the disease to enter. also ramsey and neighboring coun-ties are under quarantine for the ash bore. ash wood and prunings cannot be brought to our regular waste sites as the wood brought there is chipped and used for mulch. If you have any ash wood that needs to be disposed of, includ-ing firewood, you can call roseville City hall for the site that is accepting it. the university of Minnesota along with others is working hard to prevent this from becoming another Dutch Elm Disaster. We all need to help and do our part to stop the spread of the Emerald ash bore. please be good stewards of god’s Earth and do your part.

garage sale

thank you to everyone for your generous support of and commitment to the Children’s Ministry garage sale. the sale was a huge suc-cess. Children’s Ministry and the Child Care house grossed about $12,000.00. that is about a 20% increase from our last sale in 2008 and a 300% increase since our first sale in 2000.

More than 160 individual volunteers worked tirelessly to set–up and staff the sale. our youngest volunteer was 3 years old and our old-est was in her 90s. It was a joy to see so many people getting acquainted and making new friends.

the funds that Children’s Ministry earned from the sale will be used for new ministry opportunities and staff enrichment.

through the garage sale we were able to donate house wares, cookware, linens, clothing, bikes and furniture to the following organiza-tions that assist people in need:

bridging• st. paul Council of Churches - project • homebhutan refugees• karen refugees• union gospel Mission•

our leftovers were given to fire angels and boy scout troop #297 for their sales.

greetIngs from lIma, peru

Dear sponsoring Congregations, friends and family,

greetings from lima, peru and especially from the peruvian lutheran Church (IlEp) and Congregation of Cristo rey.

how do you say “pollada” (pronounced poyáda) in English? pollo means chicken. but what’s a pollada? so far I have asked two people in our church who have both studied English all of their lives. I got two suggested answers. “a chickening”, and “a chicken show-er”. hmm. I think I will keep searching for the translation. this month, my kids and I went to a lively pollada at roberto’s house. he is a member of our congregation, and he and his family seasoned and fried up about 20 pol-los, and had a party at their home to dance, socialize and eat delicious chicken dinner, with salad, boiled potatoes and spicy aji-chile sauce on the side. a pollada, I’d say, is “a fried-chicken-dinner-fundraiser for a par-ticular cause”. In this case, the pollada was to raise money for roberto’s healthcare. he has a chronic illness and struggles to afford the medicine he must take regularly. this pollada raised enough money for him to buy about 3 months of medication in advance. roberto is constantly volunteering in the congrega-tion, helping out in any way he can, arriving early to worship services and other church activities so he can help set up, and often staying late, to help clean up… he is a great, humble servant of the church. I was so happy be included in roberto’s pollada. looking around the dance floor, (his mother’s living

room,) a number of members of our church came to buy a plate of chicken-dinner and support him in his ongoing effort to main-tain his health. Mutual edification. a mutual up-building of the saints. 1st thessalonians 5:11, “therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.” as a community we can do soooo much more than we could ever do alone. god is good. In

my experience in peru I have also partici-pated in a frijolada (eating a delicious meal of beans) to help raise money to pay hospital bills when a member of our church was hit by a car… and there have been several polla-das run by our neighboring lutheran Church “Cristo salvador” located about 5 miles down the road, to help support their congregation.

We live in a huge, busy, noisy traffic rid-den city. (but come visit!!! there are amaz-ing parks, beaches and museums too, and a vibrant community of faith!) but part of the

reality of life in lima is traffic and noise. I have good news / bad news about this. the good news is president alan gar-cia is building an electric train which should help ease traf-fic, congestion, and pollution considerably. the bad news is the construction will take 1 ½ years, and the main street by our home and church, avenida tomás Marzano, is closed to private vehicles until the construction is finished. “how do you get to Cristo rey lutheran Church?” I used to know how to answer that question. Now we jokingly respond, “¿heli-

cóptero?” the train will be great, and we’re looking forward to riding it.

our pastoral corps is growing. In april we celebrated the ordination of Manuel obe-so. he will be installed this month in san andrés lutheran congregation in the north-ern coastal city of trujillo. Now the peruvian lutheran Evangelical Church (IlEp) has 15 pastors serving in the country: nine peru-vian pastors, four germans, one Canadian and one from the states. My job description has changed slightly. I am still the full time pastor of Cristo rey lutheran Congregation in surco. In addition I will be working a few hours per week at a seminary called the uni-versidad bíblica latinoamericana (ubl). It is

a small ecumenical seminary with about 50 students, a hand-ful of whom are lutherans and preparing for leadership in IlEp congregations. I am really excited about this. I will be holding office hours on friday afternoons providing “pasto-ral care” to students and faculty.

I have included some photos of a drama we did in Cristo rey on good friday. ¡Cristo resucitó! ¡verdaderamente resu-citó! !aleluya! Christ is risen. happy Easter.
