America's top gumshoes are back to prove onceagain that an object found in an attic or backyardmight be anything but ordinary. Wesley Cowan, independent appraiser and auctioneer (pictured);Gwendolyn Wright, historian and professor of archi-tecture, Columbia University; Elyse Luray, independ-ent appraiser and Studies at the University ofPennsylvania; leave no stone unturned as they travelaround the country to explore the stories behindlocal folklore, prominent figures and family legends.

The bets were huge and risky: billions of dollars on thehousing market. The upside was undeniable: Super-banks reaped billions of dollars, dominated the land-scape and gobbled up competitors. Then, the bottomdropped out — the massive losses on Wall Street nearlybroke the banks. In the worst crisis in decades, brand-name banks are on the brink of failure. Now, as the fed-eral government contemplates what could become amassive nationalization of the industry, Frontline goesbehind closed doors to tell the inside story of how thingswent so wrong so fast and to document efforts to sta-bilize the industry.

GPB received an over-whelming response to

the recent screening ofrenowned filmmaker Ken Burns’

new documentary series The NationalParks: America’s Best Idea. Over 1,000 peopleattended the event, which was held at Atlanta’sEbenezer Baptist Church on the Martin Luther

King, Jr. National Historic Site.

The 12-hour, six-part documentary series, whichpremieres on GPB September 27 – October 2,traces the birth of the national parks idea and wasfilmed over the course of more than six years insome of nature’s most spectacular locales — fromAcadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the GrandCanyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates ofthe Arctic in Alaska.

GPB hosted the screening in cooperation with TheMartin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site,Ebenezer Baptist Church, Earthwise, REI, The Na-tional Parks Conservation Association and TheAfrican American Experience Fund of the NationalPark Foundation.

The screening is part of a national PBS station out-reach campaign that hopes to create a larger dis-cussion about a variety of topics: the uniqueAmerican idea (and ideal) of setting aside thesevast pieces of land, the importance of preservingour natural environment and cultural history, thefragile relationship between development andpreservation and the on-going need to creategreater accessibility to these treasures so all res-idents of America have access to them.

Attendees were treated to an exclusive preview ofthe film, followed by a discussion and audience Q& A with Burns and park ranger Shelton Johnson, who participated in the film. Dr. Robert Pratt, chairof the University of Georgia’s history departmentalso took part in the discussion, in which Burnsand Johnson highlighted the series’ story of peoplefrom every conceivable cultural background whowere willing to devote themselves to saving someprecious portion of the land they loved.

“Our national parks are a defining part of who weare as a people,” Burns has said in describing thefilm.” We’re hopeful new generations of Americanswill discover our parks, embrace them and passthem on to their children as part of their heritage.”

PBS

1Be a reader and writer yourself. When you spend time readingbooks on the beach or even directions for how to put together

the grill this summer, you demonstrate for your child that readingis both fun and useful.

2 Set aside a consistent time each day for reading. Depending on your family's schedule, reading time might be in the morn-

ing, afternoon, or before bed. Whatever time you choose, stick to it, but also remember that flexibility around trips and specialfamily events is OK.

3 Read aloud to your reader. As school-aged children become better readers, parents often stop reading aloud to them. How-

ever, by reading more difficult books aloud to your reader, youhelp him learn new vocabulary words, concepts, and ways oftelling stories or presenting information. You also enjoy the close-ness of sharing a book with your child.

4 Connect read-aloud choices to summer activities. Read your child books about camping, such as “Webster and Arnold Go

Camping”, before or after a camping trip. When you read and discuss books about things your child has experienced, you helpher learn important vocabulary and extend her understanding of experiences.

5 Allow your child to choose books for summer reading. While it is important for your child to complete reading required

by his school, it is equally important for him to read about topicsthat interest him, whether it is insects, dragons, or a favorite fiction series.

6 Help your child select books at a comfortable level. Listen to your child read. If he reads smoothly, uses expression, and

can accurately tell you what he read, the book is probably at a comfortable level. If you are having troubling judging, consult yourlocal children's librarian, who is likely to be an expert at matchingbooks to readers. In addition, teach your child to use the "Rule ofThumb" in selecting books: If he makes 5 or more errors in readinga page of about 50 words, the book is too challenging.

7 Encourage your child not to limit summer reading to books. Encourage your child to read the sports page to check up on

her favorite baseball team or to read children's magazines such asRanger Rick, National Geographic World, and New Moon.

8 Read a book and watch the video together. When you finish reading and viewing, discuss the similarities and differences

and talk about which version you prefer. Many books, including“Stone Fox”, “Sarah, Plain and Tall”, and “Charlie and the Choco-late Factory”, are available in movie versions.

9 Take books along on outings. Pack books in your beach bag or picnic basket, and bring a stack on long car rides. You and your

child can enjoy books together anywhere you go this summer.

10 Encourage your child to write this summer, too. From writing postcards to friends and relatives to keeping a jour-

nal while on a trip, summer presents unique ways for your childto write about his own experiences. Have your child pack a disposable camera on vacations or day trips and help him create abook about his experiences.

What comes to mind when you think about summer with yourchildren? Swimming? Summer camp? Barbecues? Music in thepark? This year, why not make sharing books part of your family'ssummer fun?

Teachers and literacy experts agree that children of all ages needto be read to or to read by themselves and to talk about books overthe summer. When you read or talk to your young child about

books, she develops important language skills, understandingsabout books and print, and knowledge about how stories are con-structed that will help her to become a strong reader and writer.Your school-aged child's summer reading and book discussionswill help him maintain his reading skills, improve his reading flu-ency, and learn new vocabulary and concepts. Most importantly, when parents and children enjoy summer reading together, chil-dren develop a love of books and reading that lasts a lifetime.

14 JUNE 2009 experience

06/06/2009Bela Bartok: Bluebeard's Castle and Giacomo Puccini: Gianni Schicchi Washington National OperaWashington National Opera Orchestra and ChorusGiovanni Reggioli, conductorCast: (Bluebeard): Samuel Ramey (Duke Bluebeard); Denyce Graves (Judith)(Schicchi): Samuel Ramey (Gianni Schicchi); Amanda Squitieri (Lauretta); Eliz-abeth Bishop (Zita); Antonio Gandia (Rinuccio); Robert Baker (Gherardo);Christina Martos (Nella); Tony Teleky (Gherardino); Stefano de Peppo (Bettodi Signa); Valeriano Lanchas (Simone); Trevor Scheunemann (Marco); LeslieMutchler (La Ciesca); Obed Urena (Spinelloccio); James Shaffran (Ser Arman-tio de Nicolao); David Morris (Pinello); Matthew Osifchin (Guccio)

Samuel Ramey stars in both halves of an engaging double bill, presentingtwo very different approaches to the mysteries of death. In Bluebeard's Castle,a slow terror unfolds as a woman (Denyce Graves) gradually realizes that thenew man in her life will soon threaten her very existence. In Gianni Schicchi,Puccini virtuosically employs an ensemble cast in the story of the wily titlecharacter, who exploits everyone else's greed towards his own ends.

06/13/2009C.W. Gluck: Iphigenie en Aulide Teatro dell'Opera, RomeRome Opera Orchestra and ChorusRicardo Muti, conductorCast: Krassimira Stoyanova (Iphigenie); Alexey Tikhomirov (Agamenon); AviKlemberg (Achille); Ekaterina Gubanova (Clytemnestre); Beatriz Diaz (Diane)

Ipigenie en Tauride was Gluck's first French opera, and when he brought it tothe tradition-bound Paris Opera the composer created quite a stir by demand-ing that the principal performers do more than just sing -- he also wanted

them to act! That was a bold move at the time, but the result was one of hismost powerful dramas.

06/20/2009Hector Berlioz: Beatrice and Benedict Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, ParisNational Orchestra of FranceSir Colin Davis, conductorCast: Joyce di Donato (Beatrice); Charles Workman (Benedict); Nicolas Cav-allier (Don Pedro); Nathalie Manfrino (Hero); Jean-Francois Lapointe (Claudio);Jean-Philippe Laffont (Somarone); Elodie Mechain (Ursula)

Berlioz's dynamic and trendsetting orchestral music is a popular staple in theconcert hall, and while his operas aren't nearly so familiar, they're equallybrilliant. This production from Paris is led by Colin Davis, one of the world'sleading Berlioz interpreters.

06/27/2009G.F. Handel: Faramondo Metropolitan Theatre of LausanneI BarocchistiDiego Fasolis, conductorMax Emanuel Cencic (Faramondo); Sophie Karthäuser (Clotilde); Marina deLiso (Rosimonda); Insung Sinn (Gustavo); Philippe Jaroussky (Adolfo); XavierSabata Corominas (Gernando); Fulvio Bettini (Teobaldo); Johann Ebert(Childerico)

The up and coming Swiss Baroque ensemble I Barocchisti brings us a sel-dom-heard drama by Handel, sung by a top-notch cast, from Lausanne'sbeautiful Salle Metropole.

Bluegrass Breakdown Returns to GPB RadioFans of bluegrass music can rejoice over the return of BluegrassBreakdown to GPB Radio on Saturday nights. Produced byNashville Public Radio, the program now airs Saturday nights at11 PM. Here’s the host of the program explaining what you canexpect:

I’m Dave Higgs, host of Bluegrass Breakdown. We’ve put to-gether an emotionally-charged, heart-rending, paint-peeling,splinter-kicking one hour bluegrass show.

Thematically, we’re all over the bluegrassicalmap, boldly covering such hot topics as brokenthings in Bluegrassland, gospel train songs, and“ain’t” tunes. We also make frequent trips tothe seldom seen new bluegrass CD bins, wherethe latest discs in bluegrassdom are examined.

And, of course, being based in Nashville, we feature scintillatingconversation and live music with some of the best in bluegrass.Recent guests have included The McLains, Lynn Morris & Mar-shall Wilborn, Crucial Smith, Tim O’Brien & Dirk Powell, andthe Larry Stephenson Band.

Our goal is to edify, educate, and entertain — and we leave no

instrument unpicked, no song unsung, and no interview undonein our continuing effort to so. So don’t miss Bluegrass Break-down, Saturday nights at 11, following Music Americana, on theGPB Radio network.

In his previous seven specials (including The Power ofIntention, 10 Secrets To Success And Inner Peace andInspiration: Your Ultimate Calling), best-selling author Dr.Wayne Dyer introduced public television audiences to powerfulnew ways of thinking.

Now, in Dr. Wayne Dyer: Excuses Begone!, Dyer’s goal is simple, though not easy: to help viewers learn how to overcomelifetime thinking habits that keep them from maximizing theirhuman potential. Excuses Begone! addresses the powerfullytransformative process of changing habituated ways of thinkingthat limit beliefs in who we can be and what we can achieve.

Through Dyer’s process of identifying the most common self-defeating excuses, he teaches that we have the ability to choose our

way of thinking. “This is a program about choosing, notexcusing,” he explains. He informs viewers that just becausesomething has “always seemed to be the way it is,” there is awealth of research that now points to a human being’s abilityto change these habits — excuses — and move into newrealms of behavior that are no longer self-limiting.
