Letters To the EditorAs a long standing memberof the Buccaneer Region ofthe SCCA and a vintage racerwith membership in severalvintage racing organizations, Icould not let my recentexperience at OUR racetrackin Savannah go unreported. Ihave been racing at RoeblingRoad Raceway since 1965,first with the SCCA and forthe 12 years, with vintagegroups, SVRA, HSR, VDCA.On occasion I have rented thevenue for personal testing. Ihave raced numerous timesat other facilities throughoutNorth America and haveattended events in Europewith both long-term andrecent experience atDaytona, Sebring, Moroso,Road Atlanta, VIR, SummitPoint, Mid-Ohio, Lime Rock,Watkins Glen, Road America,Barber Motorsport Park,Pocono Raceway, Home-stead, Laguna Seca,Goodwood, Silverstone,Donnington Park, Montreal,Monza and Le Mans to namea few. I feel I am qualified tocomment on track manage-ment, facilities and condi-tions. As an active businessperson, I feel qualified tocomment on customerservice and value perception.

My reaction to my recentexperience at Roebling Roadwas first disbelief, then angerand finally dismay, as Irealized if changes in trackmanagement are not madesoon, we (the BuccaneerRegion) are going to lose ourhistoric venue, investmentand point of pride to thedevelopers knocking on thedoor and at a reduced rate, due to lack of revenue andinterest.

Roebling Road Raceway is abusiness, our business, andas such must respond to itscustomers, the racers andrace groups who rent it forevents. If the SVRA eventheld over the weekend of April1-5 is any indication of howall of our customers aretreated, we (as track owners)are headed for a disaster.

First, on arrival Wednesdayat 4:45pm, with race registra-tion open from 3:00pm until7:00pm (for move in) arrivingparticipants found the trackentrnace closed and lockedwith registration still open andno cars on the track. Thetrack manager (standing bythe gate with keys in hand)informed all present that thegates would be closed until5:30 and that any inconve-nience was just tough and ifanyone touched his gates, they would be barred fromadmission to the track. Oncein and settled, our groupdiscovered that literally 2/3sof the power outlets didn'tfuncion. While moving theracecars around in thepaddock it was discoverd thatareas at the sides, cornersand ends of the paving hadholes large enough to causemany cars, including sedans,to bottom. This included ahole at the entranc eto thefalse grid where the holemeasured over four inchesdeep.

The new restrooms were awelcomed and much neededaddition. However, they wereplaced at a viewing edge ofthe track where centerplacement would seem morelogical and certainly moreconvenient for all concerned.

These were also initiallylocked until numerouscomplaints were registered. The reason was given that aprevious event trashed them, implying that now we, thenext group to rent the facili-ties, would have to "pay" forthose transgressions. Alsothe entrnace from the pad-dock to the new restroomswas blocked by fencingplaced to prevent taking alogical path to the entrance. The walkways didn't lead tothe roadway, but off to theside. The inside of the facilityis poorly designed andconstructed allowing standingpools of water ouside show-ers. There are no drains orfloor boards. I would suggestthe facilities were sub par, both from design and con-struction and will causeproblems in short order. Toadd insult to injury, whenpaper supplies ran out, itrequired numerous requestsfor replacement and soapsupplies were not replacedduring the entire four-dayevent. The classroomsnormally available for thedriver education programswere also locked. Thecompetition director of SVRA/HSR was even taken to taskby track managers forrequesting that they be madeavailable for classroomtraining.

These problems, a few amany reported, resulted inthe competition director of thelargest vintage sanctioningbody in the U.S. coming tome, knowing I am a memberof the Region, to see if I couldhave some influence on howthe track is being operated.he drew to my attendtion that

Letters To the Editor cont.new and rebuilt tracks areopening regularly, beautifullycontrcuted, properly main-tained and professionallyrun. As much as RoeblingRoad has a great history, thecontinuation of events suchas this one will not bedesireable under the presentcircumstances, especiallygiven the more desireablealternatives.

Today's markets require theneeds and wishes of thecustomers be addressed in a

helpful, professional, cheerfulmanner. Every effort mustbe made to present a safe, clean, well-supplied trackand support facilities to therenting sanctioning bodies. When this does not occur, something is wrong with theon-site management or itsdirectives.

I realize apathy on the part ofmembership towards thsinvestment may be thecause for its present condi-tion; however, I for one, am

A Response From the REAs RE of the Buccaneer Re-gion I do occasionally get let-ters from track users eithercomplaining or praising ourfacilities. I am thankful for theletters of praise but really feelthe letters with complaints arethe ones that present the realopportunities to improve ouroperation. We take these let-ters very seriously and try toget all perspectives of the in-cidents and then make thechanges that will eliminatethe re-occurrence of thoseproblems. I appreciate yourconcern being a Region mem-ber, but wonder how the Re-gion is served by copyingpeople outside the governingboard.

The gate times for all eventsare prearranged and were setby officials of your event at5:30 pm. The renter of the day

struggle to maintain theirrestrooms.

After receiving your letter acheck of electrical outlets wasconducted and only one wasfound to be un-operational. It’spossible that a breaker mayhave tripped during the eventbut that is only a temporaryproblem. We are currently ex-tending and renewing electri-cal service and should havethe breaker problem solved. This is an ongoing programand will extend electrical ser-vice to the far end of the pad-dock.

Your comments as a Regionmember are always encour-aged and perhaps attendingour Board meetings wouldhelp to confirm that the BoDis committed to the contin-

ued improvement of ourtrack and the extension ofits history as a premier clubtrack.

To compare a non-spectatorClub track to some of themultimillion-dollar facilitiescoming on line isn’t arealistic comparison. TheBoard continues to makeimprovements to our facilityand the various racers andclubs are constantly praisingour efforts. I am sorry thatyour weekend did not comeup to your expectations, butthe picture you paint is 180degrees from reality. Iappreciate you commentsand hope to see you back atRoebling soon.

going to raise my voice tothe Board for an accountingof how our track got to thiscondition and what can bedone to fix it.

Other venues in the south-east are being built andrebuilt with a goal of beingprofitable ventures withschools, permanent tenants, commercial investments, storage facilities and testingand training days. Why isn'tRoebling at the forefront ofthis boom; by apathy ordesign?

I don't know if Roeblingissalvageable as a viable raceand test facility with theunchecked residential growthnow exploding all around thetrack, but I feel it is the dutyof our Club's directors andtrack management to try,and if unsuccessful toextract every penny of valuefrom this long-sufferingfacility.

Sincerely,Ross Bremer

has control of the track untilthat prearranged time.

The area entering the falsegrid that was mentioned inyour letter is a project that wehave received bids on and willbe awarded to a contractorsoon.

You question the placementof the new restrooms, be as-sured that much discussiontook place over numerousmeetings and track view andintrusion into the parking weredriving factors in its place-ment.

Bathroom checks are done onregular intervals throughoutthe weekend and the impor-tance of those inspections isnot taken lightly by staff. I canassure you that all tracks

Great Weekend For a Ride In a MustangBy Lindsay FoxBuccaneer Times Editor

Better weather could nothave been special or-dered on the weekend ofthe Jim Stark DoubleSARRC at Roebling RoadRaceway. Nor couldmore fun have been had.

Dave Brown(www.davebrownmotorsports.com)is a long-time SCCAmember who spends hisworking days preppingracecars and working onother customer vehicles.Once a year he gives alucky Buccaneer Regionmember a chance to racehis American SedanMustang. I was the luckywinner at the 2003 ban-quet and I put my win togood use on this week-end.

And what a weekend itwas. This particular carweights over 3,000pounds and has about270hp.

Driving a car this big withthis much horsepower iscompletely different thananything I've done before. In both the go-kart andSpec Racer I am alwayseither totally on the gas ortotally on the brake. There is never anyfeathering of the throttle.

I arrived Saturday morn-ing and found Dave andSki (the guy helping withthe car). We had to dosome adjusting to the

“car seat” because I amso much smaller thanmost of his drivers.

I went out for the firstsession of the day, whichwas also qualifying. I toldmyself that the first daywould just be getting usedto the car. It took me awhile to get used to notjamming on the throttlecoming out of turns. Ionly had to downshift tothird gear going into turnone and upshift into fourthgear between turns sevenand eight.

Instead of working onbraking points and my lineit was more about work-ing on when and whereyou could get on the gas.Exiting turn two one timeit felt like the back endbroke free, same thingcoming onto the frontstraight. Little did I knowthat was me spinning thetires.

I've never experiencedanything with so muchpower. One time goinginto turn five I let off of thegas and the back endstarted to come around. Isaved it and went off ofthe track on the rightbefore re-entering with nodamage.

I was the sixth race of theday and I got a good startthe second time by thestart/finish when they

gave the green flag. Ipassed the car startingnext to me and headed toturn one. Racing withother people who weregoing my speed helped alot.

There were still fasterGT1, GT2 and GT3 carszipping by us. I thought Iwas gaining a little on the14 in front of me when Isaw a huge cloud ofsmoke at the end of thestraight. I moved to theright of the track thinking ifwho ever it was dumpedoil, they were probably inthe line.

As I went by I noticed itwas Todd Carter, whoalso races under theDave Brown tent. Therewas oil all over the track.I broke and went into turnone safe. I set my sightson number 14 because Ithought I was gaining onhim.

The next time by when I"downshifted" at the endof the straight I really went

into fifth gear instead. The same thing hap-pened the next lap.DUH!!! The next time Icame down the straightall I could see was a caron its side in the tires anda driver running and thenfalling in the grass on theoutside of turn one. Thenthe double yellow cameout. Then they checkeredthe race. I only got 10laps, but I finished anddidn't have any newmarks on the car!!

I was ready to go againSunday. I did about thesame as I did on Satur-day. They told me I wouldbe a little slower becauseof the weather, so I guessdoing the same meant Imight have improved ifthe weather had been thesame.

After qualifying there wasan hour lunch break andwe had time to discusstires. Dave and Skiwanted to put on bettertires on lighter wheels, cont on next page

and I didn't have a prob-lem with that. It justmeant adding moreweight to the car someplace else.

I started near the back forthe race. Again, our firstlap was waved off. As wecame around for thegreen the second time Iwas totally on the gas. Ipassed the car I startednext to and made mymove on 14 going intoturn one. We went in

side by side and he cameout ahead. Going intoturn five I lifted again andspun the car around.Number 23 did a good jobavoiding me.

I couldn't get the car tocrank. I kept trying andtrying. Finally I put thegas to the floor and itfired. Off I went. The carpushed really bad in mostof the turns, especiallythree and five (the lefthanders). Since I spun

the faster guys caughtme really fast.

I pulled into the pits andasked if I had been halfway. They said yes, so Iweighed and drove toimpound.

All in all it was a greatweekend and I walkedaway with an experienceI'll be able to talk about foryears. I do think I'll stickto my little go-kart andkeep my foot to the floor!!

Proper HelmetSizingBy Al MitchellFrom RE News

When you go to buy yournext helmet, here aresome pointers to keep inmind. First make surethe straps are correctlyadjusted and the chinstrap is tight enough. Putthe helmet on in thecorrect position. Fastenthe chin strap and pull ittight.

Check the fit. Grab thehelmet with both handsand twist it to the left andright. If the helmet fitsright, the skin on theforehead will move as thehelmet moves. If it doesnot, the helmet is tooloose.

Check the straps. Grabthe helmet with bothhands and try to remove itby rolling the helmetforward and backward asfar as you can. Make aserious effort. If you canroll it off the head com-pletely in either direction, roll it forward so far that itblocks vision or backwardfar enough to expose theforehead it does not fitcorrectly.

By David WilliamsChief of Timing &Scoring

The Jim Stark Memorial2004 double SARRCraces are in the recordbooks! After last month'sdiscussion of records, Iexpected things to calmdown for a bit, but wehave three new laprecords to report thismonth.

First up, the huge SpecMiata field put on a showSaturday morning. Ofthe 50 cars that took tothe track for the group 1race, fully 30 of themwere the little SMwhizzers. Joe Evans seta new SM lap record at atime of 1:26.334.Strangely enough, havingthe fast ride didn't help,as he still finished sec-ond to Mathew Pombo.

To make things reallyodd, on Sunday the tworacers exchanged

positions. Mathew Pomboreset the lap record to1:26.141, but finishedsecond to Joe Evans! Ihave a feeling we haven'tseen the last of this sort ofthing, as the SM guyscontinue to figure out howto get more speed out ofthe package.

In race two on Saturday,Russ McBride stepped upto the plate with his RaltRT-5 FS racer. He low-ered the FS lap record to1:11.037. Congratula-tions, Russ! Rumor has itthat Russ' FS racer is forsale, perhaps this is aploy to get the askingprice up a bit?

In the last race of theweekend, the ITA, ITS, IT7and T2 cars took to thetrack. Rick Thompsonwas able to reset his ownrecord in IT7 to 1:24.970.

Congratulations to Rick!

I need to thank the timingfolks who came up andhelped out Saturday andSunday. The normal crew(except for Paula andRuth) in timing were notavailable - LuAnn was atanother race and Lindsaywas racing! (By the way,Lindsay, nice job avoidingthe 10 quarts of oil in turnone on Saturday)!

Aleisha from the AtlantaRegion came down withher mom and helpedwonderfully with runningtapes. Aleisha's momhelped the starter's standkeeping those racerstoeing the line. Sonia andher husband decided tostart coming back toSCCA race events andshe helped with the tapingtasks all weekend.Paula and Ruth were their

usual efficient selves andSue Free helped byrunning the backupscoring system. Thanksto you all!

It was painfully apparentthat I need more peopletrained for operating theAMB scoring system.Dividing my attentionbetween running theOrbits console and tryingto prepare and audit gridsand results made for astressful event! If youhave trepidations aboutworking scoring due tohaving to run tapes, may Iinvite you up to try yourhand at running theOrbits system? We willhave an excellent oppor-tunity to train extra peopleat the July Double Na-tional (Lou Ella CookMemorial) over the July4th weekend.
