What actually happens at Mass “We know this to be true. In fact he said it many times, in many ways, in Sacred Scripture. These are the words of
Christ himself: Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life. I AM the bread of life...This is the bread
which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down
from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the
world is my flesh" ..."Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you
have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last
day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides
in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live be-
cause of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven...he who eats this bread will live for ever." Jn 6:47-58
Jesus was quite literal in his description of the Blessed Sacrament. IT IS HIS FLESH AND BLOOD. He even goes so
far as to eliminate all metaphorical interpretation by swearing an oath and reinforcing the literalness with his verbi-
age. In the original Greek text Jesus uses the word, "trogo" which means to literally "gnaw" or "chew" or "crunch."
It's a description of eating! "He who [chews] my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me..." Again in the Greek, Je-
sus uses the word "alethes" which mean "really" or "truly". This is a miracle! And in our case, we have opportunity
to go and receive the bread of life everyday at Mass if we wanted to. So if Jesus is the bread of life, the bread that
comes down from heaven, if he promises to give us eternal life, if he promises to forgive our sins and raise us up,
there should be people lining up down the street to come to Mass on Sundays, right.
Take one more minute, another 60 seconds to ponder this last thought : You can only literally receive Christ at Mass. Why? Because it is a prayer that prepares us for the holiest food we will ever receive! It is
a sacred worship in which Christ works through the priest to come into our bodies and feed us. What better way to become Christ like?
