Our Mission

In common with all churches we seek to:

Worship God

Proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to the scriptures

Develop community

Offer nurture through the pastoral care giving of our members and staff

We call people to a life of:

Discipleship

Stewardship

Spiritual development

As a faith community we seek to be:

An inviting church

Offering hospitality and

Encouragement to people in search of God.

Our Vision

We will organize our church as a center for:

Spiritual development

Music and the arts

Urban mission

Ecumenical cooperation

Our Objectives

We have some unique opportunities due to our Germantown location and

congregational history. These include:

Providing special programs for children and families in the local community

Building a healthy, diverse congregation

Developing an urban mission

Developing a ministry of music and the arts

Using our building and endowment creatively and responsibly

The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown logo seen on the cover of this bulletin represents the mul-

tifaceted life of our energized congregation. The cross on the left symbolizes our Living Lord – the foun-

dation upon which we build our faith. The harp in the yellow square represents our rich musical heritage,

for we enjoy celebrating the gift of music in worship, workshops, and concerts. It is important for us to

share music with our community. The dove symbolizes serving – offering educational and mission oppor-

tunities through our many outreach activities. People – active and joy-filled – are represented in the red

square on the right. We welcome all people to this church. We are a diverse congregation of many racial,

ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are, indeed, alive, spirit-filled, and caring.

The colors are reflective of the beautiful stained glass windows of the church. In fact, the colors of the

logo were taken directly from The Christmas Window– “Thy light is come” made by Nicola D’Ascenzo

and seen in the southwest corner of the nave.

GATHERING AS GOD’S FAMILY

Prelude: Antiphon III & V Marcel Dupré

Welcome and Announcements

Minute for Mission Ruth Cato

†*Introit: The Call Alexander Brent Smith Arranged by Erik Routley

Come, my way, my truth my life: such a way as gives us breath; such a truth as ends all strife;

such a life as killeth death. Come, my light, my feast my strength; such a light as shows a

feast, such a feast as mends in length, such a strength as makes his guest. Come, my joy, my

love my heart; such a joy as none can move; such a love as none can part; such a heart as joys

in love.

†*Call to Worship

Leader: Praise God. Sing to God a new song.

People: God’s word is honorable,

and all God’s work is done in faithfulness.

Leader: God loves righteousness and justice;

the earth is full of the steadfast love of God.

People: Stand in awe of God for God created all things.

Leader: Rejoice in the Lord and give praises to God’s holy name.

CONFESSING OUR SINS TO GOD

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession (unison)

God of unbroken promises, we come to you today to offer our prayers of

confession. Forgive us the promises we break. We are so good at making

excuses. When you call us, we fear moving forward, fear the unknown,

fear that you will not be with us when we need you. We have put our faith

in other gods and been too busy to reach out to you. Yet, you offer AAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

doubts. Our trust is in you O God. In your faithfulness, make us whole

again.

†*Congregational Response 485: To God Be the Glory (Verse 1) TO GOD BE THE GLORY

To God be the glory, great things He hath done!

So loved He the world that He gave Us His Son,

Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,

And opened the life gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,

And give Him the glory: great things He hath done.

†* Sharing the Peace of Christ

Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.

People: And also with you.

(As worshipers, we come from diverse experiences and points of view. We have differ-

ent racial, educational, and economic backgrounds. Yet we are all one in Christ. We

symbolize this as we exchange with one another, by words and gestures, signs of peace

and reconciliation such as, “The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.”)

PROCLAIMING GOD’S WORD

Prayer for Illumination Drew Hood, reader

The First Lesson Genesis 12:1-9

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and

your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great

nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a

blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will

curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went,

as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five

years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his

brother’s son Lot, and all the possessions that they had gathered, and the per-

sons whom they had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of

Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the

land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites

were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, “To your off-

spring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had ap-

peared to him. From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Beth-

el, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he

built an altar to the Lord and invoked the name of the Lord. And Abram jour-

neyed on by stages towards the Negeb.

Leader: God’s Word is a lamp to our feet, and a light to our path.

People: Thanks be to God!

Choir: One Faith, One Hope, One Lord Craig Courtney Based on Ephesians 4:4-6, 13

One Faith, one hope, one Lord, one church for which he died, one voice, one song we lift in

praise to him who was and is and shall be evermore. There is one body, one spirit, as you were

called to one hope. One Lord, baptism and faith, one God and Father of all, who is in you all.

One Faith, one hope, one Lord, one church for which he died, one voice, one song we lift in

praise to him who was and is and shall be evermore. Though we be many people, diverse with

various gifts, we are given to each other for the unity of the faith, that we grow in the

knowledge of the Son of God, in the fullness of Christ.

The Second Lesson Romans 4:13-25

For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to

his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is

the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is

void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there viola-

tion. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on

grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the

law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all

of us, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”)—in the

presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls

into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed

that he would become ‘the father of many nations’, according to what was said,

“So numerous shall your descendants be.” He did not weaken in faith when he

considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about

a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb.

No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew

strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was

able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith “was reckoned to him as

righteousness.” Now the words, “it was reckoned to him”, were written not for

his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him

who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for

our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

Leader: God we thank you for your Word;

People: The story of your grace.

Sermon: FAITH TO SAY YES Reverend Dr. Nancy E. Muth

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*Affirmation of Faith: Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in

Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,

dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from

the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God

the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the commun-

ion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the

life everlasting. Amen.

Installation of Officers

Leader: There are different gifts,

People: But it is the same Spirit who gives them.

Leader: There are different ways of serving God,

People: But it is the same Lord who is served.

Leader: God works through different people in different ways,

People: But it is the same God who achieves his purpose through them all.

Leader: Each one is given a gift by the Spirit,

People: To use for the common good.

Leader: Together we are the body of Christ,

People: And individually members of him.

Leader: Though we have different gifts, we are all called into the church of

aa Jesus Christ by baptism, and marked as Christ’s own by the Holy

aaa Spirit. This is our common calling, to be disciples and servants of

aaa our servant Lord. Within the community of the church, some are

aaaa called to particular service as deacons . . . as elders . . . and as minis-

a ters of the Word and Sacrament. Ordination is Christ’s gift to the

aaa church, assuring that his ministry continues among us, providing for

aa ministries of caring and compassion in the world, ordering the gov–

a ernance of the church, and preaching the Word and administering the

sacraments.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily

bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the

power and the glory forever. Amen.

Offering of Our Gifts and Lives

Offertory: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Gilbert M. Martin When I survey the wondrous cross on which the prince of glory died, my richest gain I count

but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save the death

of Christ, my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See,

from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and

sorrow meet, or thorns composed so rich a crown? Where the whole realm of nature mine, That

were a present far too small; Love, so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all!

Amen!

*Congregational Response 592: Doxology OLD HUNDREDTH

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Charge and Benediction

*Congregational Response 432: Song of Hope ARGENTINA

May the God of hope go with us every day,

Filling all our lives with love and joy and peace.

May the God of justice speed us on our way,

Bringing light and hope to every land and race.

Praying, let us work for peace, singing, share our joy with all,

Working for a world that’s new, faithful when we hear Christ’s call.

WELCOME: If you are visiting with us today, please sign the Fellowship Pad at the

end of your pew. We pray the hour will be meaningful to you and you will come and

worship with us again. Everyone is cordially invited to a time of fellowship in the

Longstreth Auditorium following the worship service.

TODAY’S GREETERS: Lois Nafziger, Jean Swenson, Pete Smith. Next week’s

Greeters will be: Rosy Walkenhorst, Faith Wolford, Delores Solomon.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS: Being installed this morning for second three

year terms are Denise Cowie, Lois Nafziger and Faith Wolford as elders. Delores Solo-

mon, Jean Swenson and David Wolford are being installed as Deacons.

PRAYERS FOR FIRST CHURCH: Each Sunday members are invited to meet at

9:40 AM in the Westside Room to offer prayers for the life of our church. We believe

that if an in-depth study of God's Word is coupled with fervent prayer, the Lord will

bring about a great revival in our church. Everyone is welcome.

BREAD AND CUP: FPCG’s own Gospel Choir will be the headliners of the June 2

Bread and Cup Coffeehouse from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. If you’ve ever wanted to hear

them in concert, here’s your chance! Also, although they may need no introduction to

those of us who’ve been blessed by their contribution to our worship, this is a wonder-

ful opportunity to introduce them to your friends and neighbors who may worship else-

where, or those who don’t have a church home. In addition to the gospel choir, we’ll

have our time of open microphone for others to share their performing arts gifts, and a

hospitality table to receive your culinary arts gifts. This is the last Bread and Cup until

the fall, so bring a friend or make a new one at Bread and Cup!

CHALLENGE OFFERING - FPCG DEACONS: The June Challenge offering

supports the work of the deacons of FPCG. The deacons are our congregation’s lead-

ers in the ministry of caring and compassion to our members. Together, they deliver

flowers and bulletins weekly to our sick and shut-in members, provide van transporta-

tion for worship and special services, and oversee the greeters who are the first face of

hospitality worship attendees. Through the coordination of Parish Visitor Heidi Mer-

cado Littles and Reverend Kevin Porter, each deacon has primary responsibility for

communicating with several families of the church in order to provide pastoral care in

times of celebration, crisis and/or need. Your generous contributions will enable the

deacons to respond to members’ needs in challenging financial situations and extend

meaningful gestures of support and hospitality to members and neighbors alike.

SUMMER CHOIR: Beginning Sunday, June 9, 2013, Summer Choir will begin. The

music will be quite a bit easier for the Summer months. Come and join us when you

can. Rehearsals begin at 8:45 AM each Sunday to prepare the music for that day. For

more information contact David Daugherty, Director of Music.

CONGREGATION CONVERSATIONS: How can First Church improve as a community of faith? Members of the congre-

gation are encouraged to participate in a group conversation with Reverend Paul

Rhebergen on how this may be accomplished. Reverend Paul Rhebergen is the

consultant working with our congregation and all participants will be given the

opportunity to express their thoughts during the gathering.

The conversations will be held on the following dates

and will each last approximately two hours:

Faith Wolford will be at a table during the coffee hour today to give you
