The Bible teaches that along with the bread and wine of Holy Communion we also receive the true body and blood of our Savior. Jesus’ own words, “this is my body” and “this is my blood for the forgiveness of sins” reveal His Real Presence in the sacrament (Luke 22, I Cor. 10:15-16). The Bible also teaches (1 Cor. 11:23-32) the Lord’s Supper, properly received brings great blessings, but improperly received without understanding can actually incur God’s judgment. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of communion, please feel free to commune today. However, if you have any questions, please first speak to a pastor.

OLD TESTAMENT READING: Job 38:1–11 Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? “Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?

EPISTLE READING: 2 Corinthians 6:1–13 As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.

HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 4:35-41 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Week of June 20, 2021

“Don’t you care?” I’m sure at some point in our lives those words have crossed our lips. Especially when the storms of life threaten us so much that we feel like we’re about to sink. Maybe it’s comforting to know we’re in good company with Jesus’ disciples who asked the same thing of Him and found out just who it is that walks alongside us, watches over us, directs our outcomes, and plans for our future. This weekend we will examine the things that sometimes make us ask that question, and the answer Jesus has for us.

HOLY BAPTISM – This weekend we celebrate the baptism of Adriana Jane Shaheen, daughter of Michael & Stephanie. May God richly bless Adriana and her family!

ALTAR FLOWERS – The flowers in the church sanctuary were generously donated by Candi and Chuck Bartley in thanksgiving for their granddaughter, Kaylee’s, healing. Thanks to God! IMPORTANT COVID PROCEDURE UPDATE Over this past year we have sought at every turn as a church and school to honor national and local mandates and recommendations. In keeping with this intent: Any person who has been fully vaccinated may choose to wear or not wear a mask on our St. John campus, with the exception of any school functions. At this time, our communion serving protocols will remain in effect along with full sanitizing procedures between worship services.
