TOURS AND SOCIAL EVENTS

www.selectroses.ca

www.butchartgardens.com

Welcome to the World Rose Convention Tours and Social Events!

We hope you enjoy the tours and social events we have created especially for you at the Vancouver 2009 World Rose Convention. Each one takes advantage of the best features and gardens of Vancouver and its surrounding region.

One of the big factors early on in our planning was the request to avoid conflict with the daily tours and the lecture series. With that in mind, all our lectures take place in the mornings and our daily tours start immediately afterwards. Because of this quick turnaround, most of our tours include a gourmet box lunch to be eaten on the bus. This allows us to get on the way quickly after the lectures end while returning everyone back to the Westin Bayshore in time for evening events.

We also wanted to offer a variety of evening events so delegates could do what they do best…enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow guests while enjoying the hospitality of Vancouver!

The tours have been priced competitively and custom designed to fit the criteria of a World Rose Convention. We have included a variety of private and public garden visits and must-see local and regional sites. After all, we want to show off the best that Vancouver and British Columbia have to offer!

We would like to thank our sponsors for their gracious donations to our tours: Select Roses, W.P.J. McCarthy & Company Ltd, The Butchart Gardens, BC Ferries, Wilson Transportation and Hatley Park National Historic Site. Their generosity has helped keep the ticket price down.

It’s hard to believe all this planning will come to fruition in a few short months. We are absolutely thrilled to be hosting this event and look forward to welcoming you all to our fine city and province.

Rosy regards,

Brenda Viney and Darlene Sanders, Co-Chairs

Vancouver Gems City Tour

Enjoy the sights and sounds of Canada’s most beautiful city with an experienced local guide who will explain the history of Vancouver as you travel from rainforest to world-class shopping and dining.

Your tour will begin in Stanley Park, an evergreen oasis close to the heart of Vancouver’s downtown core. Over 1,000 acres in size, Stanley Park is the largest park within a city in North America (Central Park in New York is only 800 acres). We will stop at and stroll through the Stanley Park Rose Garden and enjoy the over 3,500 plants on display. The highlight of the garden is a stylish west coast inspired arbour sporting a charming combination of early blooming old-fashioned rose varieties sharing space with numerous clematis plants giving this structure more than one season of blowsy bloom. Continuing on through the park, we will travel past the Nine O’clock Gun, Vancouver Rowing Club, Totem Poles, The Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and Lions Gate Bridge.

Your coach will then wind its way past English Bay (the home of the New Year’s Day Polar Bear Swim!) and continue along fashionable Robson Street, through colourful Chinatown and historic Gastown, the birthplace of Vancouver.

Then it will be on to Granville Island, where you will have time to browse through the Granville Island Public Market, galleries, artists’ studios and specialty shops. This will be a great opportunity to shop for souvenirs and enjoy coffee and a snack while watching the boats sail by. With your souvenirs in hand, we will head back to the Westin Bayshore.

City Rose Gardens Tour

Vancouver and the surrounding area contain some spectacular gardens and this afternoon tour will take you to three fabulous rose gardens including the famous Queen Elizabeth Park, the second most visited park in Vancouver after Stanley Park. We will begin with lunch onboard our coach as we head to the Centennial Rose Garden in Burnaby Mountain Park. The Garden features more than 900 bushes of modern Hybrid Teas and Floribundas.

After wandering through Centennial Garden, we will continue on to the Herb House Rose Garden at Queen’s Park in New Westminster. Planted in 1956, this sunken rose garden contains 1,100 hybrid and floribunda roses in the pattern of a Shakespearean garden. The Garden underwent a major renovation in 1992 including new brick pathways through the garden, planting of more than 800 roses in rebuilt beds, a new lawn and a cedar gazebo was constructed to provide a quiet sheltered spot to enjoy the beauty of the garden.

Our last stop will be the world famous Queen Elizabeth Park, which offers Vancouverites a diverse range of activities from sporting to horticultural. The seasonally changing and beautifully planted Quarry Gardens offers perennial and annual flower beds featuring new cultivars and old favourites along with decades-old tree fuchsias and lantanas accentuating island beds. A stream and cascading waterfall add cool comfort and variety to the landscape, as does the beautiful fairly new Rose Garden with it’s abundance of cultivars.

Botanists Pride Tour

Visit two of the 1001 Gardens You Must See Before You Die.

We will begin with lunch onboard our coach as we head to the VanDusen Botanical Garden. Beautiful in every season, explore, with volunteer guides, this scenic international renown garden of 55 acres – a living museum of plants collected from around the world and artistically displayed amidst rolling lawns, woodlands and five tranquil lakes, all in the heart of Vancouver. Enter the rose garden through an archway donated by the Vancouver Rose Society in 1999 to commemorate its 50th Anniversary. Boxwood borders four rose beds planted with modern cultivars. They radiate formally from a sundial designed by Gerhard Class.

Next we will visit Canada’s oldest continuously operating university botanic garden, the University of British Columbia’s Botanical Garden. This 100 acre garden was established in 1916 under the directorship of John Davidson, British Columbia’s first provincial botanist, with the original mission of research into the native flora of British Columbia.

Claire Laberge, Horticulturist of the Montreal Botanical Garden, will guide us through the species rose collection, while “Friends of the Garden” will show us a selection of the rest of the gardens.

Claire is well qualified to be your guide as she tends to over 10,000 roses and 1,000 different types at the Montreal Botanical Garden and has done so for the past twenty years. In March 2008, the Montreal Botanical Garden, whose mission is conservation, education, research and sharing of plant material, was recognized as the reference collection for Roses in North America by the American Public Garden Association.

DAILY TOURS

Fraser Valley Rosarians Tour (with or without dinner and Minter Gardens visit)

For hundreds of years, the Fraser River, named after explorer Simon Fraser, has been known as the “Mighty Fraser”. After its tumultuous canyon descent and near its journey’s end, the Mighty Fraser meanders through an area extending from the community of Hope in the East to the community of Langley in the west. This area, known as the Fraser Valley, contains some of the most fertile agricultural land in British Columbia, thanks to the rich silt the river carries from its humble beginnings in the Rocky Mountains.

On this tour, we will drive to the countryside of South Langley to experience the results of the Valley’s fertile land and the efforts of Brad Jalbert of Select Roses Nursery and Wingswept Gardens, home of John and Gael Dodd. For those who wish to extend their experience into the evening, we will travel on to Chilliwack for more memorable moments and dinner at Minter Gardens.

Select Roses, established in 1990 on the family farm, is a farm-style nursery/greenhouse specializing in the hybridizing and growing of beautiful garden roses. The nursery is as unique and special as the roses sold and has an extensive display garden of over 1,000 roses plus shrubs, lilies, hostas and just about any other type of plant a “plantaholic” can find. Enjoy a gourmet lunch hosted by Select Roses with culinary delights created by Chef Jalbert, one of the Jalbert brothers.

Wingswept Gardens began thirty years ago as 2.5 acres of peat bog, heavy bush, and a small stream. The Dodd’s have gradually transformed these elements into today’s oasis of garden charm and serenity. The formality of the front rose beds eases into less structured areas of old trees and large, connecting ponds. Flowing grass paths will draw you into ever changing vistas. The garden is a labour of love, and is described as stunning and one of the most breathtaking private gardens in British Columbia.

Minter Gardens, 32 acres of floral artistry, is ever evolving. Each season offers a dramatic view. Summer brings masses of annual colour adorning topiary features and beds, along with the traditional blooms of the fabulous Rose Garden, and the cool, quiet woodlands that surround gurgling brooks and water falls. The Gardens are at once a kaleidescope of colour, a place of serene beauty, and a gardener’s source of inspiration.

Vancouver Rosarians Tour

Nestled in South Vancouver’s prestigious equestrian community are two private rose gardens and a nursery worth an afternoon of exploration.

In 1991, well-known gardening authority Thomas Hobbs and his partner, Brent Beattie, purchased a small nursery located on one and a half acres in South Vancouver. They transformed it into a wonderful boutique nursery which draws visitors from far and wide as the trendiest nursery in the Pacific Northwest. Southlands Nursery features a glorious Victorian glasshouse festooned with orchids, beautiful pots and ornaments from Europe, and a matchless selection of unusual plants, all enticingly displayed.

Tavistock Estate, also located in the heart of Vancouver’s Horse Community, is the home of Lesley and Kelvin Finlay who have owned the one acre property since 1993. Today, this multifaceted garden, surrounded by many mature trees, has evolved into a Rosarians’ paradise with over 400 roses consisting of David Austin Roses, Old Garden Roses, Floribunda’s, Shrubs, Climbers, Hybrid Teas, and Miniatures. The roses are planted together with perennials, shrubs and oriental lilies. We will enjoy a strawberry tea among the garden’s most lovely features: the rose garden parterre with a fountain, a koi pond, many decorator pots and traditional statues.

Janet Wood, Vancouver Rose Society’s long-time ambassador, has created a mixed garden of approximately 300 roses with Clematis, Rhododendron, Heather, annuals and a wee veggie plot. The small garden is 27 years old, the small house is 57 years old and the small gardener is 77 years old. You are welcome.

Dinner Reception at the Museum of Anthropology

To conclude and in celebration of the Convention’s “Canada Day”, where all the lecture presenters are Canadians speaking on Canadian topics, enjoy a Vancouver cultural experience at the Museum of Anthropology.

Canada’s largest teaching museum is located in a spectacular building overlooking the mountains and ocean on the grounds of the University of British Columbia. Its’ soaring glass walls and magnificent setting are uniquely suited to its extraordinary collection of massive Northwest Coast totem poles, carved boxes, bowls and feast dishes, as well as a diverse collection of 35,000 artifacts from around the world. The Museum grounds feature two outdoor Haida Houses and ten full-scale totem poles, two carved house-posts, and two contemporary Welcome Figures. This magical setting will be the backdrop for our dinner reception, which includes access to the exhibits for the evening.

On your way to the Museum, First Nation guides in traditional costume will give an overview of their history and describe the cultural practices that are still in use today. Upon our arrival at the museum, for those who wish, you can take a short walk to the University of British Columbia’s Rose Garden, part of 400 acres of campus gardens. The original rose garden was established in 1949 and renovated in 1997 as a display garden, and contains mostly hybrid tea and floribunda roses.

Following a typical west coast dinner, the guides will give a short performance of drumming, singing and dancing.

WORLD R OSE CONVENT ION & FEST IVAL | JUNE 18-24, 2009 | VANCOUVER, BC

PRE CONVENTION CUSTOMIZED TOUR: Majestic West Coast Mountain and Valley Tour

Visit British Columbia’s majestic mountains, rivers and rugged coastline during this three-day pre convention tour.

You will travel via coach from Vancouver to Whistler along the breathtaking Sea to Sky highway, which winds through the coastal rain forest at Horseshoe Bay, along the ocean’s edge to Shannon Falls and Squamish, and through Garibaldi Provincial Park, until you reach the Resort Municipality of Whistler, venue of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games!

You will then settle into the small alpine valley that contains Whistler. This natural year-round playground offers a bounty of activities such as alpine sightseeing, mountain biking, hiking and shopping. Or ride a gondola chair to the top of one of the mountains for breathtaking vistas of the surrounding area. Relax on an outside deck of a local pub or café and then visit the shops. In the evening, enjoy dinner with your fellow Rosarians and stay at Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Nestled at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, Fairmont Chateau Whistler defines mountain luxury. Tastefully designed rooms with spectacular mountain or village views were created to blend with the natural alpine setting.

The next morning, the adventure will continue through the Pemberton Valley, traveling over the scenic Duffey Lake Road to the historic Goldrush town of Lillooet, where we will stop for a refreshment break and enjoy the cool breeze. The Duffey Lake/Cayoosh Creek Valley was historically used as a travel route between the Lillooet First Nations on Lillooet Lake and the Stl’alt’imx First Nation on the Fraser River. The area was important for hunting, trapping and gathering. The winding drive along Duffey Lake Road is rewarding with views of mountains, lakes, and wilderness.

Your next stop will be sure to impress – Hell’s Gate, a mountain of rock that causes havoc in the Fraser River. After a gorgeous drive through Lytton, located where the green waters of the Thompson River meet the brown, silt-laden rushing waters of the mighty Fraser River, we will arrive at Boston Bar, aptly named after the “Boston men” (American gold seekers). Here enjoy a tram ride over Hell’s Gate and a traditional West Coast lunch buffet while watching the white water rafters manoeuvre their way around the mountain of rock.

From Boston Bar, you will travel through rugged terrain and tunnels and over bridges with the mighty Fraser River below on your way Harrison Hot Springs. This quaint town is located at the southern end of spectacular glacier fed Harrison Lake in the lush green Fraser River Valley.

After a fulfilling day of sightseeing, relax and rejuvenate at the Harrison Hot Springs Hotel and Spa, soaking in the natural hot springs, enjoying the spa or wandering the nature trails before an evening of dancing to big band sounds over dinner.

On our final day, we will wind our way back towards Vancouver with visits to private and public rose gardens. First, sponsor William McCarthy, a Master Gardener, Garden Designer, Rosarian, and Certified Rose Judge, will host us for lunch and share his 110 acre retreat property, Shiloh Hill Estate. Situated 100 kilometres east of Vancouver, the sloping hillside property includes the McCarthy family’s estate residence and various themed gardens and landscaping. All residences, buildings and gardens were designed by William McCarthy, who has integrated over 1,250 roses representing over 850 different varieties in designated rose beds and as

part of assorted gardens and beds. From species roses through hybrid teas, all rose classifications are represented and displayed in the 15 acres of gardens surrounding the main residence, Mission Claire.

Next, we will visit the Centennial Rose Garden in Burnaby Mountain Park. The Garden features more than 900 bushes of modern Hybrid Teas and Floribundas. Nearby are majestic totem poles, a reminder of the community’s proud native heritage.

After wandering the Centennial Garden, we will continue on to the Herb House Rose Garden at Queen’s Park in New Westminster.

After a day of experiencing roses, we will arrive at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in time to register for the Convention and enjoy the Meet and Greet reception.

WORLD R OSE CONVENT ION & FEST IVAL | JUNE 18-24, 2009 | VANCOUVER, BC

POST CONVENTION CUSTOMIZED TOUR:“The Crown Jewel” Vancouver Island Garden Experience

Visit British Columbia’s favourite getaway – Vancouver Island – and experience the beauty of its gardens, the vastness of its landscape and the warmth of its people during this four-day post convention tour.

Travel by coach from Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay to board a British Columbia ferry for the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The 90 minute ferry crossing feels like a “mini-cruise”, complete with shopping, cafes, and hopefully whales and dolphins racing alongside. Back on the coach, you will head “up island” along the coastline to visit the quaint towns and gardens of Parksville and Qualicum Beach.

We will explore Little Qualicum Falls, impressive waterfalls cascade down a rocky gorge in a beautiful forested setting bordered by steep mountain peaks in one of the most beautiful parks on central Vancouver Island. We will stroll through a network of trails under the shadow of towering ancient Douglas-fir trees, majestic pillars untouched by the modern world – some more than 800 years old – at Cathedral Grove. Then enjoy a stroll through Lynnette Callan’s private rose garden filled with 800 roses.

The evening will be spent in Parksville at the Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort, surrounded by 22 acres of forest, rich in Douglas fir and Arbutus trees, and bordered by three kilometres of sandy beaches. Enjoy the forest by the sea and dinner.

The next morning, you will head “down island” to Lantzville, a picturesque seaside community with views of the Straits of Georgia and the mainland, for private garden tours and lunch with the Mid-Island Rose Society. The Society was formed in 2000 by residents who love growing roses. Several spectacular gardens will be open for viewing and all will be within walking distance of the buffet lunch venue.

Continuing south, you will stop in Duncan to visit the totem poles and the renowned First Nations’ Quw’ utsun’ Cultural and Conference Centre. As it is now late afternoon, and since you are in the heart of vineyard country, it is only appropriate that a winery/cidery tour is next on the itinerary – the locals are pleased to welcome you and show off their wide selection of wines and ciders.

The final destination of Day Two is Victoria, the capital of British Columbia at the southern tip of the Island. We will reach it by driving south over the spectacular Malahat Drive, with its commanding views of the surrounding countryside and ocean. Victoria is famous for its beautiful gardens, old English charm, and historic buildings. You will stay at the Fairmont Empress Hotel, rising regally on Victoria’s spectacular Inner Harbour. With her turn-of-the-century beauty, the Fairmont Empress captures the grandeur and elegance of a bygone era, while her facilities and services meet the needs of today’s traveller.

The next morning, you will visit the private garden of Diana and Patrick White, a sloping seaside organic garden of two acres with roses of all types, and Finnerty Gardens, on the grounds of the University of Victoria. Free time in the afternoon can be spent at your leisure visiting the city, and enjoying all that Victoria has to offer – maybe a whale watching excursion, high tea at the Empress Hotel, some shopping along Government Street, visiting the Royal British Columbia Museum, or a long walk along the inner harbour and up through Beacon Hill. Completing your day will be a Farewell Dinner in the Fairmont Empress Rose Garden, weather permitting, where you will experience the flavour of Vancouver Island.

On the last day you will be whisked away for a day of rose garden touring and dining. We will be treated to brunch at Hatley Park situated near the Pacific Ocean; this stunning 565-acre property reflects the richness and diversity of British Columbia. At the heart of the property is the famous Hatley Castle, a 40-room mansion built in 1908 by James Dunsmuir, a coal baron and the former Premier and Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Leisurely explore the Italian, Japanese and Rose gardens before enjoying afternoon tea and a tour of the gardens at Government House, the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. The Government House grounds embrace 14.6 hectares (36 acres), including 8.9 hectares (22 acres) of a rare Garry Oak ecosystem, and 5.7 hectares (14 acres) of formal gardens. The Victorian Rose Garden was inspired by the Warwick Castle Rose Garden and the Sunken Rose Garden was designed by Vancouver Rose Society life member, C. Denis Yeomans.

Homeward bound, we will stop at Eurosa Farms, Vancouver Islands’ only cut rose grower, to admire the kaleidoscope of over 125,000 sq ft of floral color, and learn from the third generation Dutch greenhouse rose growers. Your Island experience ends with a relaxing ferry ride back to Vancouver and the Westin Bayshore Hotel.

ClimateWarmed by Pacific Ocean currents and protected by a range of mountains, Vancouver enjoys mild temperatures year-round. Hovering around 25º Celsius (high 70s Fahrenheit) in summer to a mild 0º to 5º Celsius (mid 40s Fahrenheit) in winter, the climate is always hospitable. In June, anticipate warm days (19 degrees Celsius/68 Fahrenheit) and cooler evenings (11 degrees Celsius/54 Fahrenheit). For more detailed weather information, visit www.theweathernetwork.com

What to WearVancouver is a casual town with mild weather year-round, but located in a rainforest, so an umbrella, layers and smart casual clothes will see you through most situations. Summer evenings, especially in the surrounding mountains, can be cool, so it’s best to pack a jacket and sweater. Wear comfortable shoes, and in addition to the umbrella, bring a sun hat and suntan lotion, for those extra hot and sunny days.

CurrencyThe monetary system in Canada is based on dollars and cents. Most Greater Vancouver establishments accept US dollars and Japanese yen, and usually offer reasonable exchange rates. The Canadian Dollar is available in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills. The coinage denominations are $2, $1, 25 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents and 1 cent. There are 100 cents to one dollar.

WORLD R OSE CONVENT ION & FEST IVAL | JUNE 18-24, 2009 | VANCOUVER, BC

Bank debit or credit cards are the most convenient means of getting cash at the many 24 hour access, automated banking machines. As in the United States (US) and Europe, these machines accept cards with Plus, Interac and Cirrus symbols and there is one on almost every block in downtown Vancouver. Most Canadian businesses accept US currency and travellers cheques. International currency exchanges are available at the airport and at all the banks in the city. Major credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, and American Express) are generally accepted by Canadian businesses.

ElectricityOutlets and voltage (110 volts) are the same as in the US. Adapters are required for electrical appliances not originating in North America. The frequency of electrical current in Canada is 60 Hz.

Food & BeverageAn extensive variety of cuisine is available representing the multicultural flavour of Vancouver. Fine dining, casual or family friendly restaurants are easily accessible throughout Greater Vancouver.Minors are not admitted into bars. In British Columbia, minors are defined as anyone under 19 years of age.

LanguageFederal government departments provide service in English and French, but most of the population speaks English as either a first or second language. The City of Vancouver is quite cosmopolitan and has representation from many languages.

Medical Insurance for Travelling to CanadaInternational delegates are not covered by Canadian health insurance plans. Check with your personal medical plan before leaving your home country to ensure you have adequate medical insurance. Delegates are urged to take out insurance to cover loss incurred in the case of cancellation, medical expenses and damage to or loss of personal effects whenever travelling outside of their own country.

Public TransitExceptional public transportation is overshadowed slightly by the convenience of Vancouver as a great walking city - clean, green, safe, and easily accessible.Vancouver’s public transit system includes the bus, sky train, and seabus. This system gets you anywhere in the Greater Vancouver area. The fare is based on how many zones you are crossing. Within 1 zone, you can travel the Vancouver area at $2.50 (subject to change).

Smoking LawsSmoking is not permitted by law in public buildings, on public transit, in shopping malls, and in most restaurants, pubs, nightclubs, and casinos, including outdoor seating areas (such as cafe patios). Please smoke in designated areas only.

TaxationThere are three levels of taxation that affect visitors to Vancouver. There is a 10% tax charged on accommodation and liquor. For just about all other goods and services, there is a 7% provincial sales tax (PST) as well as the 5% federal goods and services tax (GST). There are a number of exemptions and complexities in the way those taxes are applied, particularly where food is involved. PST, for instance, is not applied to food and children’s clothing.

The goods and services tax (GST) is charged on most goods and services sold or provided in Canada.

TimeVancouver is in the Pacific Time zone, eight hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), or Universal Coordinated Time (UCT). When it is midnight in London, England, it is 4pm Pacific Time. You can see Vancouver’s time in relation to most cities on the globe by visiting http://www.timeanddate.com which also provides a Canadian calendar.

TippingThe standard tip in most restaurants is 15 % of the total bill (based on good service) and is not usually included in the bill.
