OURNEWEST SEMINARIAN JAMES MALIKFILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

    Hello fellow St. Johns Parishioners!

I am happy to finally put a name, face, and a bitof a back story to the new mystery seminarian fromSJB. My name is James Malik IV. I am the son of Jimand Lesley Malik.

My dad and I lector, and my mother chants andsings in the choir. We have been parishioners at St.John the Baptist for 12-13 years now. I was confirmedhere, dabbled in youth ministry, and most recentlycompleted my first year as a catechist, teachingReligious Education to the sixth graders.

Throughout my time at St. Johns, but especiallyin the past year, I have come to a deep appreciationfor the community of our diverse parish. From thestaff and administration to the weekday warriors at

daily mass, I have met some incredible people here.I couldnt be more excited and honored to representour great family here at St. John the Baptist, withShaun Cieslik, as I begin my priestly formation forthe Diocese of Joliet.

Alright, so we know how great our parish is, now let me tell you about how great I am.

Totally kidding. But, I will give you a quick rundown of my hearing the call. I really started forming and

living out an adult Catholic faith in early 2010 when I was taking the last course Page 3

    Peace in Christ,

    James

towards my undergraduate degree online, here in Winfield. I soon found a job mentoringtroubled young men at Mount Carmel, a Catholic-based youth ranch in Wyoming. In March of2011, after nearly a year of my mentorship, I felt called to the priesthood at a Eucharisticretreat we took the boys to in Cody.

Having never seriously considered or considered period - pursuing the priesthood, I wasinitially hesitant, fearful, mostly shocked. When I returned to Winfield two months later, it was-nt until a hot, humid day in early summer, sweatin out Eucharistic Adoration here in the chapel

at St. Johns, that I was moved to action. After getting in touch with Father Burke Masters, ourdioceses ace vocations director, I began attending discernment group meetings, Spirit & Truthmeetings, the ordination of Father Steven Borello, last June, talking with other seminarians, and shortly after began the application process for admittance to the Diocese of Jolietspriestly formation program.

I was officially accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Joliet this past March, and ithas been recommended that I begin my formation at St Meinrad Seminary in southern Indianathis August. Because of my previous education, I will begin in Pre-Theology I. After the successfulcompletion of the two-year Pre-Theology program, I would then begin a four-year Theologyprogram, culminating in ordination to the priesthood. As the beginning of the fall semesterdraws nearer, I am growing in excitement and expectation.

While I am more fully understanding the implications of Thy will be done (Mt 6:9), I amalso learning that, if we let go, [the] yoke is easy, and [the] burden is light(Mt 11:30). On myjourney, I welcome your prayers and support, and encourage you to contact myself or either ofmy parents if you have any questions, comments, or just want to say hello. I look forward tosharing the fruits of my formation with all of you.

    A Fathers Day Prayer

God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things.Bless the men of our parish and of our families, that they may bestrengthened as Christian fathers. Let the example of their faith andlove shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honorthem always with a spirit of profound respect.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Summer Weekday Mass Schedule

During the summer, Fr. Thomas will beaway at a Convocation of his religiousorder, The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate,

and he will also be going to summer schoolduring the early mornings for three weeksto study liturgy. Because of his scheduleand the vacations for Fr. Henry & Fr. Tom,we will have a reduced weekday Massschedule.

Monday thru Friday,we will be having only the

    7:30 a.m. mass during the week.We will resume the 8:30 a.m. mass

    in the fall.

    Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

In todays Gospel, Jesus compares the beginning of Gods

kingdom to a mustard seed. This tiny seed, which fits in the

palm of a hand, can grow to fifteen feet with sprawlingbranches! Like the mustard seed, the Christian community

had a tiny, seemingly insignificant beginning. The church,

which began with about 120 followers, added three thousandpeople on Pentecost Day following the descent of the Holy

Spirit. Since then, the number of Christs disciples has grownincalculably and continues to grow throughout the world.

Good stewards go about Gods business of planting seeds

among all those they encounter. What will we do this week

    to add to Gods kingdom?

Seeds that take root in one season eventually startto show signs of life. Fields once dormant becomeverdant. Flowerbeds display their colors. Similarly, the seed of Gods Word takes root in our lives. Wecan look and see it grow before the eyes of ourhearts. We become God Stewards when we nurtureGods word, and bear great fruit for His Kingdom.

A Fortnight of Prayer for Freedom: June 21-July 4, 2012Prepared for the people of the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois

Day 1: Thursday, June 21, 2012 Please read Romans 3:21-26Brothers and sisters: Now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though

testified to by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his

grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his Blood, toprove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed, through the forbearance of God-to prove his righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus.

Day 2: Friday, June 22, 2012 Sts. John Fisher, Bishop, and Thomas More, MartyrsLet us pray: O God, martyrdom have brought true faith to its highest expression, graciously grant that,

strengthened through the intercession of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More, we may confirm by thewitness of our life the faith we profess with our lips. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Day 3: Saturday, June 23, 2012 Vigil of the Nativity of St. John the BaptistGrant, we pray, almighty God, that your family may walk in the way of salvation and, attentive to what St. John thePrecursor urged, may come safely to the One he foretold, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Day 4: Sunday, June 24, 2012 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist, SolemnityLike St. John, we are born to proclaim in word and work who Jesus is and the impact that Christ has over all of life.Psalm

63: O God, you are my God- for you I long! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, Like a land parched,

lifeless, and without water. So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory. For your love is betterthan life; my lips offer you worship! I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands calling on your name.

My soul shall savor the rich banquet of praise, with joyous lips my mouth shall honor you! When I think of youupon my bed, through the night watches I will recall that you indeed are my help, and in the shadow of your wings

I shout for joy. My soul clings fast to you; your right hand upholds me. But those who seek my life will come toruin; they shall go down to the depth of the earth! They shall be handed over to the sword and become the prey ofjackals! But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by the Lord shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be

    shut!

Let us pray: O God, who raised up Saint John the Baptist to make ready a nation fit for Christ the Lord,

give your people, we pray, the grace of spiritual joys and direct the hearts of all the faithful into the way ofsalvation and peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) this summer is

conducting a Fortnight for Freedom to begin with the vigil of the feasts ofSt. Thomas More and St. John Fischer and culminate with IndependenceDay. The purpose of this effort is to issue a call to defend religious liberty,

and to urge the laity to work to protect the First Freedom of the Bill of

Rights. We will be providing prayers over the next three bulletins that can be

prayed during June 21 through July 4, 2012. Also, the entire list of prayerscan be found on the St. John the Baptist website, stjohnwinfield.org.

We know prayer can make miracles and we (may have) witnessed it a number of times in our life. The

change in the Communist countries is the best example for that. Today we need freedom to practice

our faith without restrictions of any kind. So let us answer the call of the Church in our country for the

fortnight of prayer. Prayer with penance will be answered immediately.
