What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: God fills us with love. How, this week, will you show your family - your mom, dad, brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins - that you love them as God loves them? Question for Youth: When Jesus left the world, He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us. Have you ever given something important to someone else as a sign of your love for them? Have you ever experienced the Holy Spirit as a similar gift to you? Question for Adults: Today we celebrate the rela-tionship of love among the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In what similar community of love do you live?

How to Prepare the Heart at the Offertory The fundamental insight: “Sacrifice,” which is at the heart of Jesus’ saving work, the Mass, and the Christian life, means giving undivided love to God the Father. Gifts and offerings that truly rep-resent the heart of the giver are the true sacrifice desired by God. The objective of the preparation of the gifts and of the altar is to place our whole selves on the altar so that we can be joined with Jesus’ whole self and given to God the Father. The principal activity: Pray the Morning Offering throughout the week, and during the preparation of the altar and the gifts at Mass, consider slowly and thoughtfully what or whom you pray for; what you are working toward in the days to come; what has brought you recent joy; and each thing large or small that causes you pain or suffering. Be specific and genuine in these considerations, and place them on the altar along with the bread and wine.

Weekly Reflection June 16, 2019
The Most Holy Trinity
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
If you stroll through a bookstore, or scroll through a book list,
you will inevitably find a long list of what are called “self-
improvement” books. Google alone provides a list of six
types. There are books for self-confidence; self-help, self-love,
self-growth, self-improvement and self-esteem. I have to con-
clude from this variety of offerings that a lot of people are walk-
ing around with deep concern over their perceived failure, or at
least worrisome weakness in the matter of living life fully.
Of course, for me as a believer in God the Father, Jesus Christ
His only Son, and the Holy Spirit, I need only turn to the Bible
for the answers to all those areas of concern. I can declare with
the utmost confidence because I believe that the co-author of
Holy Scripture is God, who has chosen to work through the hu-
man writers. I also hold that the discernment of the Church,
guided by the Holy Spirit, is the deciding factor as to which
books belong in the collection.
One doesn’t have to go very deeply into the teachings of Christ
until we learn the mind-blowing truth about God. One that we
would never conclude on our own: that our one God is a commu-
nity of three Persons. These same three are distinct but equal and
Jesus names them “the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
There is no sense trying to comprehend this truth in its fullness
because that is beyond the ability of our finite minds. After all,
God by nature is the Supreme Being, the absolute “Other” from
us. A much more spiritually profitable exercise is to tackle the
question of why Jesus told us this in the first place. As with so
much of what He taught us about God and prayer, the answer
lies in His love for us.
All of us at one time or another in our lives have loved someone.
Leaving family aside as automatic, just turn to friends. Initially
they know very little about us. But in pursuing the relationship,
we want them to know us inside and out as time goes by. We in
effect say to them: “This is who I am.” Jesus tells us the same
thing, despite His knowing from the outset that we will never
fully know the Infinite One.
Putting all this into the context of the current cultural buzzword,
God wants to be “transparent.” He wants us to know the kind of
God with whom we are relating. This Trinity is what God is. It
follows that we can benefit so much from an authentic and deep
relationship with Him based on mutual love.
So we celebrate, venerate and advocate for this revealed mystery
on this solemn feast day. Fuller speculation about what the Trin-
ity means is the task primarily of theologians. For the rest of us,
the main point Jesus wanted to make is that God’s love for us is
so deep and rich that we don’t need to turn to any self-help li-
brary. We realize from the truth of the divine Trinity what God
really wants to be for us: Someone we can love and know. Or, to
put into other words, He wants us to know Him like an open
book.

Saint of the Week Augustine of Canterbury, Bishop, d. c. 605
St. Gregory the Great, pope during Augustine’s adult life, had a vision
of re-evangelizing Anglo-Saxon England. To accomplish this, he se-
lected about thirty of the monks from his monastery in Rome, includ-
ing their prior, Augustine. This group set out for England in 596.
When the group reached the English Channel, they received warnings
that the Anglo-Saxons were a wild and fierce people and the monks
would be in great danger if they crossed over the Channel to England.
The monks asked Augustine to seek reassurance from the pope, so
Augustine returned to Rome where St. Gregory encouraged him and
his monks to continue with their mission, promising them that he was
certain that the English were ready for conversion.
Arriving in the territory of Kent, the missionaries sent word to the Eng-
lish king that they came to spread the good news. King Ethelbert (later
St. Ethelbert), whose wife was Christian though he himself was not,
came to meet them. Ethelbert had no objection to the monks preaching,
allowing them to convert any of his people who would believe in
Christ. King Ethelbert himself was baptized in the following year.
Having learned well from his teachers, the king would not force any of
his people to become Christian, the service of Christ being voluntary.
Upon his conversion, however, many of his followers were also bap-
tized. Soon after, Augustine was consecrated the bishop of the English.
Augustine’s success in his mission overjoyed the pope who sent anoth-
er band of missionaries to assist him. Gregory outlined for Augustine
the steps which he should take to establish the Church in England.
Local customs were to be maintained as far as possible, substituting the
feast days of saints for heathen festivals. Pagan temples were to be
purified and consecrated as Christian churches for, as Gregory wrote,
“he who would climb to a lofty height must go by steps, not leaps.”
Augustine kept busy spreading the faith. In Canterbury, he rebuilt an
ancient church as the center of his see, which stood on the site of the
present day cathedral. Outside the walls of Canterbury, he established
an abbey which he dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul. After his death,
this abbey became known as St. Augustine’s. He also established sees
in London and Rochester.
Augustine died on May 26 in about the year 605, seven years after his
arrival in England. He is honored in England and Wales on that date. In
this country, his memorial is celebrated one day later, on the 27th of
May.
Augustine’s message today: Like many of us, Augustine had
some doubts before he set off on his mission, but, with God’s
reassurance through the pope, he proceeded on to great success-
es.
From whom have you received reassurance when unsure about a par-
ticular undertaking? Have you brought the issue to someone you love
and trust, perhaps to your pastor?

June 16, 2019— The Most Holy Trinity
“But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will
guide you to all truth...” (John 16:13)
Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to help us know and
live the truth. To prepare ourselves, we need to
open our hearts to receive this gift before we can
give it. Develop a daily prayer routine. Talk and
listen to the Holy Spirit. This is best done in si-
lence, when we can hear His response.

La Santísima Trinidad
Primera Lectura : Proverbios 8:22-31

Awakening Year – Personal Consecration Opportunity
Looking for a simple way to be spiritually renewed? Looking
to develop a deeper relationship with Our Lord? Want to
grow in holiness, but are too busy? Set aside just 15 minutes
a day for nine days during this Awakening Year to deepen
your faith and make a consecration on a personal level to
Jesus through Our Lady of Guadalupe. Read, reflect and
pray daily with the story of Our Lady and St. Juan Diego.
On the ninth day, you are invited to pray the personal con-
secration prayer, committing yourself to be an active Catho-
lic and sharing your Catholic faith with others. This conse-
cration is easy to fit in your schedule! Just pick the nine days
to do this individually or get a small group together!
