6th Sunday of Easter

Solemnity of the Blessed Trinity

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…”

Yes, the Gospel presents God as truly caring for the world, His creation, as these are all the products of His mighty words. And we have to accept the truth that the center of this divine work is us, humankind, the crown of His creation. (Psalm 8:5-6)

In the Old Testament we learned that Moses, after his experience with God on Mt. Sinai, proclaims Him as God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in kindness and faithfulness (Exodus 34:6). In short, He is the God of Love. This love reaches its highest expression in the sending of His Son so that through Him the world might be saved.

Love is the very essence of the Triune God. Why? God has no origin and proceeds from no other person. It is the overflowing abundant love of the Father that made Him sends His Son. The Son receives this love and returns this to the Father. This mutual love of the Father and the Son is the Holy Spirit.

What are the attributes of the three Divine Persons? The Father who begets the Son brings into being and out of nothing, all perishable things. He is therefore called the Almighty Father. The Son is the Wisdom of the Father, to Him is attributed the beautiful arrangement of the world. As the artist,

parte sang sosyedad kag sang Simbahan nga ginatapuan sang amay, iloy kag kabataan.

If there is something that we can always accuse ourselves of, it is the dichotomy of our faith and life. This means that our way

of life or our witnessing is not consistent with the belief that we profess.

Since our Christian lifestyle may fall short of reflecting our creed and cult, we may also have not become genuine agents of social justice and peace. The gap between the poor and the rich widens. Perhaps, this is the result of the great divide that we have created between us and God and the rest of creation. We have become selfish and self-centered that we have forgotten our connection with Him who created us and with one another. Hence, we live our lives according to what we want and need.

Thus, we believe that there is a need for us to reacquire the Trinitarian vision of things.

What does this mean? According to Toni Weber, a priest of the Focolare Movement, the “Trinitarian” vision of things means that “we are never dissociating a reference of one of the divine persons to the other two”. In other

words, we see the interconnection or the link among the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We recognize that they live in mutual love and that they do things in the spirit of cooperation and collaboration.

Simply put, when we see everything with the wisdom of the Trinity, we learn to always see things in their relationship with one another - that “I” is not separated from “You” and from “Others”. That whatever we do to ourselves and to other people affects the whole for we are not isolated from one another.

Reacquiring the Trinitarian vision of things can create a big impact in our life as a family, community and parish. This will teach us to do things in reference to other people. We will think of the consequences of our actions whether our deeds can bring about the common good or not. We shall become more discerning of our actions because we think of others and not only ourselves.

Moreover, this way of seeing things will also teach us to associate ourselves with others especially with the poor and the

needy because we believe that under one Fatherhood of God, all of us are brothers and sisters. We become more caring and generous because we c o n s i d e r ourselves as one anothers’ keeper.

Lastly, a T r i n i t a r i a n vision of things will help us gain a perspective that this life’s journey is not just a personal journey but a communal one, that whatever needs to be done, whatever challenge we need to face, we are responsible to one another, and we must put our acts together!

As the African philosophy “Ubuntu” teaches us - I AM BECAUSE WE ARE!

Katilingban: Napasad kag Ginsagod sang EukaristiyaMsgr. Alejandro P. Esperancilla

This is the collective sentiment expressed by leaders of an Iloilo parish youth ministry who spoke up recently

amidst the controversy surrounding the British music group One Direction.

Rising to the Year of the Laity’s challenge “Choose to be Brave” Frances Isabel “Isa” Catolico and Gerald “Jed” Flores, Education Coordinator and Assistant Education Coordinator respectively, of the Jaro Parish Youth Ministry (JPYM) of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles in Iloilo told CBCP News young people need more spiritual direction and good role models, not “BI” or bad influencse such as the one given by One Direction.True role models

For young people to find their true direction in life, Catolico mentioned the need for authentic role-models.

“The first models for me are my parents, followed by our elders in the youth ministry,” she said.

She also cited the important role priests play among the youth, saying “Priests have an important influence on us especially when they make themselves available for spiritual direction or counseling.”

Flores added, “The saints are very important role-models. Even if they lived many years ago, their life and teachings have an influence on me and other young people.”

Among the saints, he considers St. John Paul II as the one who inspires him most “because he was the first Pope and saint to visit Iloilo and he was the Pope who reached out to young people, especially through the World Youth Days (WYDs).”

Earlier, an appeal was made by CBCP Commission on Youth executive secretary Fr. Conegundo Garganta to parents to forbid their kids from watching the concert of One Direction, or 1D, that will be held in Pasay City on March 2015.

The advice was given by Garganta after a video circulated online showed two band members smoking what the singers themselves referred to as an “illegal substance”. It was also reported that some parents had even gone out of their way to buy 1D concert tickets at a price of P17,950 each.P18k tickets

Catolico, a student of the West Visayas State University, thinks that it is impractical for parents to shell out nearly P18,000 for a VIP ticket or for students to spend P2,000 for

the lowest-priced ticket just for a one-night concert.

Flores, a Colegio de San Jose student, while not in favor of an outright ban of the 1D concert for fear of a backlash by other countries towards Filipino artists who perform abroad, agreed with the idea of forming the consciences of parents and their kids.

“Our country is among the poorest in Asia. It is not justifiable to spend so much money just for a one-night concert. Even among the rich, even if it is their right to spend their own money, they should be sensitive to the plight of their neighbor.” he said.

Catolico admits that she enjoys listening to the music of 1D but she does not consider herself a fan of the group. She observed that many young girls who overly-idolize celebrities have ended up living in a fantasy world. She says that she knows of girls who even imagine that they are “girlfriends” of boy band members.

Flores, on his part, said the youth, being impressionable, might not distinguish between performance from the life of celebrities whom they consider their idols.

The Eucharist is the greatest and clearest expression of Jesus’ love for all humanity, symbolized by His Sacred Heart, because the Eucharist commemorates His sacrifice on the cross for love of us.

The Parish Catechetical Ministry under the umbrella of the Education Ministry is

now preparing for the of school year 2014 – 2015. Its goal is to preach the Word of God through Catechesis especially in public schools and around the vicinity of Our Lady of Candles Parish, Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral. These are the schools tapped for Catechesis: the Jaro National High School, Jaro I and Jaro II Elementary Schools, Bakhaw Elem. School and Judith Lazarraga Tiongco Memorial Elementary School in Tabuc Suba-Ilaya.

There are thirteen Catechists

Before the celebration of the Feast of Pentecost, 12 young parishioners

gathered for a seminar. They were catechized about the Sacrament of Confirmation, its nature and the effects in their lives.

To be more solemn and meaningful to their lives, they received the Sacrament on the very day of the Feast of the Pentecost, June 8, 2014 within the 8:00 o’clock in the morning.

Starting last Monday, June 2, our parishioners experienced a more lively and joyful, yet

prayerful Mass with a cantor leading them to sing familiar songs during the 6:30 a.m. and the 5:30 p.m. daily Masses. A wholehearted singing of songs sets the mood for a meaningful celebration of the Eucharist.

Several interested members of the Ministry underwent training for cantors under the able leadership of Fr. Noel Gomez with his assistant , John Peter Guevara and Schola members Eloissa Mae Porras and Mary Elizabeth Pajemolin.

handling catechism classes in five different schools this school year. Out of these thirteen, two are categorized full-time, rendering eight hours a day in both office and school; the six others are on a regular basis paid monthly according to their number of teaching loads; and the seven are assigned as barangay catechists who hold weekend catechesis in their respective barangay, however, they also volunteer to share their time and talents to teach in school. The Parish Catechetical Ministry is giving them allowance for their transportation.

To prepare them for this delicate ministry of spreading the Kingdom of God, the parish administration

pagpangurus?

June 11, 2014. During his weekly General Audience, Pope Francis talked about the suffering of

countless victims of child exploitation.“Tomorrow, June 12th, we celebrate

the World Day against Child Labor. Millions of children, listen closely, dozens of millions of children are forced to work in degrading conditions, exposed to forms of slavery and exploitation, to abuse, mistreatment and discrimination.”

The Pope asked the international community to protect children from this plague. He said a “calm childhood allows kids to look at the future with confidence.” He also recited a Hail Mary for them.

Pope Francis arrived to St. Peter’s Square 30 minutes early. He greeted a

MANILA, June 8, 2014 – Despite the temptation to do so, the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Pentecost Sunday called on Filipinos not to condemn those who have been charged with plunder over the multi-billion pork barrel scandal.

“As Christians we are exhorted to love at all times, even those who sin and err, for none of us is above human frailty,” Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said in a press statement.

“For those among us who are not accused, let us remember that the offenses with which those who now stand accused are charged could very well be the offense of any of us as well,” the prelate added.

Villegas made this statement following the indictment of Senators Jinggoy Estrada, Juan Ponce Enrile and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles and five others in the Sandiganbayan for plunder over the illegal siphoning of public funds by dubious non government organizations.

“Who are we to condemn? Let the one who has no sin be the first to cast a stone,” he said.

“We embrace all who have wronged society as our brothers and sisters and continue to pray, that as God’s people, we

The Pope also had some words for human and weapon traffickers.

“I’m sure that if I ask a question now: How many of you are weapon manufacturers? None! None! Because they don’t come to listen to the Word of God.”

large group of children with disabilities, taking refuge from the heat inside the Paul VI Hall.

During his catechesis on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Pope described fear of the Lord. He then explained what it means.

“It doesn’t mean being afraid of God. No, it’s not that. We know that the Lord is our Father, and He loves us and wants our salvation. He always forgives, always. So we have no reason to be afraid of Him.”

Pope Francis explained that this gift “makes us feel like children in the arms of their father.” He added that before God, Christians are weak and fragile.

“That’s what the Holy Spirit does with the gift of fear of the Lord. It opens hearts. An open heart so that forgiveness, mercy, kindness, and the embrace of our Father may come to us.”

The Pope added that fear of God is also an alarm against sin.

Villegas to Filipinos: Don’t Condemn Alleged Pork Scammers

MKK DAYmay all walk the path of conversion and renewal,” the CBCP president said.

‘Path of righteousness’Villegas emphasized the need for those

who are tasked to prosecute to “observe total commitment to the human rights of the accused” and those who have been charged to “deal with the full force of the law.”

“Everybody culpable, whatever their political affiliations may be, should be investigated and, if so warranted, indicted. When justice is selective, it is not justice at all,” he said.

Noting that a “vengeful action cannot be

from God,” Villegas reminded the public not to act out of hatred or desire for vengeance.

“Let no action – official, personal or otherwise – be ever born out of hatred or a desire for vengeance,” he said.

“Let everything we do be born out of sincere love for each other and concern for the common good for only then will we be recognized as disciples of the Divine Master who searches out and rescues the lost and the weak,” Villegas added. (Jennifer M. Orillaza)

Three-in-One?Benje S. Pelobello

Pila ang Dios? Isa ukon tatlo?

makahangup sang aton pagtuluohan. Nga-a kuno nagapati kita sa Santisima Trinidad kay wala man ini ginatudlo sang Kasulatan?

Ang buot hambalon sang nature amo ini “the character, constitution, or essential traits of a person, of things”.

Ang person naman amo ini “those endowed with knowledge and free will”.

For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and these three are one”.

“Those who will try to understand the Trinity will lose their mind, but those who will reject the Trinity will lose their soul”.

Flores de Mayo has always been a tradition in the Philippines. It is where we show our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary,

Our Mother, and Our Queen, through daily catechism, Novena, and paghalad.

As part of tradition, the children in Tabuc Suba, Ilaya, Jaro, Iloilo City, headed by the BAC Worship Coordinator, Mrs. Ma. Lourdes Alquisada and the BAC Coordinator, Mrs. Geraldine Subong, Children of Mary (COM) Association Full-Fledged and few Junior and Senior Aspirants from Colegio de San Jose, celebrated Flores de Mayo in the whole month of May.

Catechism classes usually start at exactly 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon. The catechists were the Children of Mary of Colegio de San Jose. They taught the children ranging from 2 years old up to 12 years old. Encompassing almost 75 children who live nearby Tabuc Suba, we divided them into two groups: The Children who still need to learn few things from the Bible and Mary, and the other group is handled by the COM, who had already received Mary in their lives.

The children were taught some stories from the Bible, especially the Gospels, about Jesus and Mary; basic prayers; Marian and children songs; good values and virtues for their young and innocent lives as they walk through the growing and more complicated society. Teaching is hard at times, but remembering our obligations in this association inspired us to do our best and have more patience.

We checked their attendance and gave stars with points written on it to encourage and inspire them to attend their catechism class every day. After their catechism, they were gathered inside the Chapel to pray the Holy Rosary solemnly, led by the COM members, followed by the Novena. Then follows the most important part which is the offering of the flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Finally, snacks prepared by the sponsors were served.

As for the COM, numbering almost twenty members, we paved a way for them to become more aware of themselves, taught them some prayers especially the “Memorare” and made them reflect and reminisce their memories with their family and with Jesus through a Journal Writing.

We also provided them some strategies in team building and games that, developed their trust and cooperation, especially in leadership.

The four weeks with them developed in us the value of friendship. Our bonding grew stronger and happier as we shared our thoughts and laughter. We also gave them full support in their last two weeks practice at the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder School for the closing presentation which was held last May 31, 2012 after the procession. Their presentation resulted into a wholesome and unique number which made everybody proud and happy for their accomplishments.

Last June 1, out of our own initiative and willingness to give cash donations we gave the children especially the less fortunate, what they needed most,. We gave them school supplies and other old but still usable school supplies. This is our way of letting them feel how grateful we were of their presence and cooperation throughout the whole month of Flores de Mayo. We held a short program to make their day more enjoyable and memorable.

Indeed, helping makes us feel better. Asking God’s help and Mary’s assistance is not that difficult. It even gives us the strength and confidence to be ourselves in front of the children whom we teaching to Jesus with Mary!

Amo gani nga nagabalik kita pirme bilang katilingban sa Eukaristiya so that like Jesus we can learn to go beyond our ill-feelings, biases and conflicts, kag magtuon sa paghigugma katulad sang paghigugma
