Once mixed in, compost gives more consis-tency to sandy soils and improves their abil-ity to retain moisture. It helps aerate claysoils, making them easier to work with, andit also contains high levels of good bacteriato help you in your gardening efforts. Inother words, compost will increase yourgarden’s productivity.
Here are a few of the ingredients necessaryfor a well-balanced compost recipe: dry orfreshly mown grass cuttings (yours or yourneighbours’!), dead plants and leaves, pineneedles, and kitchen waste (cooked or rawfruits and vegetables and egg shells). Acompost pile should always remain moist,so be sure to water it during dry spells, andturn it over once a month with a pitchfork.
In June, add a 1- to 2-centimetre layer ofcompost around lettuce plants and annualflowers. In August, add it around roses and
perennials. Use a handful of compost whenplanting bulbs in September, as well as everytime you plant trees, shrubs, and conifers.
Making compost is really very simple,requiring little more than a concern for theenvironment, a sheltered corner in the gar-den, a few plants, and about ten minutes perweek. And if you don’t have all the neces-sary ingredients, don’t worry: you canalways buy your compost in a bag at thegarden centre or hardware store.

Trellises are amazingly versatile and deco-rative elements in any yard. Another, faster way to create shade is tobuild a wall of trellises, which can thenbe covered with climbing plants. Youcould also install a pergola, increasinglypopular with gardeners. This is a smallstructure, made with horizontal beamsand columns, which can be used to sup-port climbing plants. For either of these
ideas, be sure to think carefully about thepositioning in order to make the most ofthe shade they will provide.
A water garden is also a great way to addcoolness to a backyard. This kind of proj-ect entails a lot of work, of course, butthe results are bound to be very satisfy-ing. If you think that easy care yards can’t be as beautiful as those thatrequire lots of work, then think again! This type of garden is perfect forbusy people or for those who hate cutting grass, watering, pruning, andweeding but who would still love to have a magnificent property. Lowmaintenance is the perfect solution for disabled people, seniors, andtwo-career families. Best of all, an easy care yard allows you to go onvacation without having to worry about your precious plants!
A good example of this type of yard is one composed primarily of attrac-tive gravel and rocks in which drought-tolerant plants are grown. Just afew plants, such as lavender and thyme, are sufficient to create a stun-ning effect. There is no need to spend hours after work and on week-ends tending to the backyard, as care is limited to a bit of pruning nowand then in order to control growth.
Weeds are not a problem if the layer of gravel is thick enough, and aweed-free future is even more likely if you take the time to install a geo-textile weed barrier before laying the gravel. When you want to plant,just push aside some gravel and cut a hole in the weed barrier with asharp knife. Of course, you will want to opt for hardy species that won’tconstantly attract unwanted insects.
Even if you don’t have very much space, it is still possible to create aneasy care yard that is visually pleasing. Potted plants can be placed instrategic spots around the yard and can be brought inside during win-ter, if the species permits. You could, for example, create a grouping ofecheveria in a container or two. This plant loves full sun and can survivevery well all on its own, with only a bit of appreciation from its owner!

Whether it belongs to you or to your neighbours, it seems like there’s always at leastone very persistent cat trying to claim a flower bed as an outdoor litter box. Nomatter how cute the little kitty is, it’s no fun when he does his business on freshlyplanted flowers!
There are many reasons for a cat’s frequent visits to your backyard: there might befield mice to hunt, loose, freshly turned soil to turn into a giant litter box, or warmmulch and tree trunks to sharpen claws on.
Protecting your garden is a more viable solution than trying to chase cats away.Here are a few tips.
1. Plant species that repel cats.Rue officinale and coleus canina have particular scentsthat cats do not appreciate. Felines won’t linger where these plants are grown.
2. Cats can also be discouraged by obstacles. Lay chicken wire, jute cloth, or prick-ly stems from rose plants over the soil. Kitty’s afternoon siestas in your vegetableplot will no longer be so cozy!
3. Sprinkle pepper on the soil after watering. If you do this on a regular basis at thebeginning of the summer, cats will find somewhere else to go for the rest of theseason. Experts say that pepper is more effective than some store products soldfor this purpose.
4. Without resorting to cruelty, there is one radical measure that works temporarily.A short squirt from a garden hose is sure to scare a cat away, at least for a while.
Keep cats outof your flower beds
Dandelions have made many a homeowner’s hairturn gray, and desperate battles to get rid of themhave been known to involve harsh chemicals,flame throwers, and very expensive gadgets. Aweed is defined as an unwanted plant, whicharrives by chance in our yard or garden. Typically,weeds don’t pose any true threat to gardens orlawns. So, before running to the garden centre tofind some herbicide, here are a few tricks to helpyou prevent and control the growth of theseadventitious plants.
Spreading a layer of organic mulch is the bestway to prevent the growth of undesirable plantsin flower beds and vegetable plots. Whether youuse shredded dead leaves, cocoa shells, barkchips, or straw, mulch will prevent many weedsfrom spreading. Mulch has the added benefit of
providing essential minerals to the soil and con-serving moisture.
Weeds that develop in the lawn are often theresult of cutting the grass too short. A mulchinglawn mower or garden tractor is the ideal solutionin this situation. Just mow the grass to a height of7.5 centimetres during the summer and leave thegrass clippings on the ground.
In order to control their growth, undesirable plantsthat are already established must be pulled outbefore they produce seeds. This weeding will onlybe effective if you succeed in removing all theroots. Specially designed tools for the removalof dandelions, including their long roots, can befound at garden centers and hardware stores.Scalding weeds repeatedly could be an effective
method for removing them from theedge of a path.
Some weeds are invasive and needto be strictly controlled. Try diggingthem up repeatedly, or cover themwith black plastic for a while. Theuse of an herbicide should be avoid-ed as much as possible, becauseof their impact on the environmentand the danger they pose to petsand children.

Most people would agree that a meal seemsmore special when eaten outside in the freshair. Everything seems to taste better, even ifthe barbecue is sometimes a bit smoky and afew mosquitoes are always buzzing around.But sharing a delicious meal with friends inyour backyard can turn into a nightmare ifyour space for entertaining is poorly designed.
For example, if you decide to build your ownbrick barbecue pit instead of purchasing a grillon wheels from a store, don’t forget to incor-porate shelves for plates and cooking acces-sories. There’s noth-ing more frustratingfor a chef than a bar-becue with no placeto store things.Whenit isn’t in use, dress itup with some flowerand herb pots.
Lighting is anotherimportant elementof successful enter-taining. Soft light-
ing throughout the evening is always appreci-ated by visitors who aren’t familiar with yoursurroundings. After all, you don’t want yourguests stumbling around in the dark! If youinstall lights on your deck, make sure they arenot bare bulbs, which cast an unpleasant andharsh glare all around. If you prefer to go nat-ural, place candles and torches in such a wayas to cast shadows on the garden. If you groupthem together, you’ll create enough light fora comfortable ambiance that will be appreciat-ed by all. Just don’t forget to extinguish themonce the evening draws to an end.
