YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL JUNE MEETINGBy Michael Twomey

Presentation by Edmond O’ Sullivan, Vetinary Department, CorkCounty Council regarding dog fouling and general dog care. Mr. O’ Sullivan gave an enlightened and oftentimes entertainingpresentation on dog fouling and dog care in general. He began bylisting the top complaints received by his office. He said the num-ber one issue for the public is ’owned dogs out of control’ with thesecond most common complaint being ’aggressive behaviour ofdogs’. The third highest problem noted was that of ’straying dogs’with dog fouling the fourth matter on the shortlist to concern thepublic. Mr. O’ Sullivan stated that there has been a ’dramaticincrease in complaints from residents associations’ and admittedthat it is a logistic ’nightmare’ trying to make penalties stick withthe difficulty of matching the owner with the dog. He was quickto point out that the fault does not rest with the dog in all of theaforementioned issues but with the owner of the dog. He addedthat people ’detest’ dog fouling because it is ’aesthetically noxious’and expressed his amazement that dog urine is ’not covered underlegislation’. Council members looked visibly disgusted as Mr. O’Sullivan ran through some of the health implications when dogowners refuse to pick up dog foul. He said that some parasites cansurvive for up to three days on waste and that one particular eggwith a thick layer has the ability to survive for five to ten years."This could be on the sand a child is playing with," he said."Every time a stool is passed an egg is present," he added. Mostsurprisingly was the statistics for prosecution of dog owners. Mr.O’ Sullivan said that as far as he knows only one prosecution hasbeen carried out in the last 6-7 years. "Legal people are loath to doit," he said. He then informed the members of the type of actionthe Cork County Council takes. He presented leaflets on respon-sible dog ownership and poster warning of the dangers to publichealth, adding that the posters had had a dramatic effect inMidleton. He added that he has visited primary schools to educatechildren on dog ownership. Mr. O’ Sullivan stressed that there is aperception that Councils are obliged to provide dog litterbins. Hesaid this was not the case and that ’any bin will do’ for ownerslooking to dispose of dog foul. He added that he ’does not like’ thepooper-scooper bags and said a plastic scented bag used typicallyfor nappies are much more effective. Cllr. Casey asked if thehealth of the dog would make a difference to the toxins in the dogfoul. Mr. O’ Sullivan confirmed that a well cared for dog helps theissue of public health. Cllr. Revins ventured that tagging the dogswould help with identification. Mr. O’ Sullivan agreed and said alldogs would be ’microchipped’ with greyhounds being exempt.Cllr. Linehan-Foley wanted clarification on the matter of ’danger-ous dogs’. She said some owners of dogs such bull terriers are liv-ing in areas not suitable for such animals. "Can anybody own anykind of dog," she asked. Mr. O’ Sullivan confirmed that this isindeed the case. He said owners are obliged to follow guidelinesfor restricted dogs such as muzzling but admitted that only a dogwarden witnessing abuse of guidelines could lead to investigation. He added that the other alternative was for residents to submit awritten and signed complaint. "Which doesn’t happen for obviousreasons," he concluded. Cllr. Beecher said he had not seen anyposter on public health in Youghal. Cllr. Linehan-Foley said theTidy Towns committee is against having them erected. The Mayorasked the Cllrs. to defer discussing this matter until a later date.

She saidshe has had a lot of correspondence from the public on the matterand said the public is reticent to use the other playgrounds in theestates ’because they feel the playgrounds belong to the estates’.She asked if there was ’any news from Bus Eireann’ in relation tothe suspension of the proposed Catherine St. bus stop. She addedthat walkers using the town walls sally ports are requesting that abin be erected for dog foul. Cllr. Casey picked up the thread byrequesting bins be erected for walkers on the ’one mile route’ fromthe golf links entrance on Golf Links Rd. to the top of RaheenPark. He also recommended the use of plastic bags, which henoted, are hung at cemetery gates for free in London. Cllr. Burkehad a number of items. She added that the Catherine St. car park is in need ofa ’lick of paint while the ’low wall below the entrance to the GolfClub has fallen’. Cllr. McLellan informed the chamber that the carpark at Raheen Rd. ’needs spraying’. She added that ’taxis aremounting the footpath at the end of Windmill Hill’. She asked thata bollard be erected to prevent this as some altercation had recent-ly taken place when a taxi had endangered a disabled pedestrian. She asked that footpaths adjacent to St. Mary’s church be repaired. The Town Clerk replied that the paths are included in the ChurchSt. regeneration programme. Cllr. Beecher lamented the gatheringof youths indulging in underage drinking at the back of GreenPark on Friday nights. He said the park is littered with bottles andsaid the Council might let their concerns be known to the Garda. He cited the entrance to Green Hole as ’dangerous’ and concludedwith a request to have the overgrowth behind St. Mary’s grounds

YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL JUNE MEETINGthe Garda. He cited the entrance to Green Hole as ’dangerous’ andconcluded with a request to have the overgrowth behind St.Mary’s grounds cut. The Town Clerk said he would reply to allqueries in his monthly report but wished to express his views onthe playground at the Millennium Garden. He said Youghal had noplaygrounds in 2000 and can now boast three. He said ’a lot ofmoney’ had been spent and that the playground is in need of resur-facing. He confirmed the Council is ’awaiting funding fromRAPID’ which, he said, typically comes in June. The mayor saidthe town was ’very honoured’ to have three playgrounds and theCouncil ’would do the best we can’ to have all three operating atthis time of year. The mayor then expressed his dismay at theongoing disruption caused by boy racers. He said the situation is’getting out of control’. He praised the Garda for their efforts butbemoaned the continuation of the problems suffered by locals asa result of boy racing activity. Cllr. Beecher likened the Claycastlecar park to ’Mondello race course’. Cllr. McLellan said she hadexperienced ’a near miss’ by the railway station when a boy racertried ’to overtake another car on a corner’. Cllr. Beecher expressedthe view that Garda technology should move from analogue radioto digital to prevent boy racers from tracking their movementswhile Cllr. Linehan-Foley said the Garda had been present atClaycastle ’for the past three nights’.

Cork County Council Items.Cllr. Burke asked if the County Manager is satisfied with theprogress being made in the pursuit of a blue flag for Red Barn.He said there would be no better way for Youghal to ’bounce back’than to have ’three blue flags in 2009’. He again requested that thedouble yellow lines at the entrance to the Coast Guard Station beextended to prevent ’large jeeps’ obstructing the view of exitingtraffic. He said the odours from the landfill site are ’still bad’. Heasked if for an update on traffic management plans for the bottomof Cork Hill, requested that footpaths be repaired at Tallow St. andStrand St. and wanted to know if there will be any funding madeavailable this year for the front strand promenade. He concludedby asking if the Council intended to continue with their plain toput recycling bins by the railway station. Cllr. Linehan-Foley wanted to know if there had been any feed-back regarding her request to have the Rifle Range removed. Sheasked that her proposal to push on with a campaign to reopenYoughal Railway would not ’slip away’. The Town Clerk said hehad written to the Department of Transport and is awaiting a reply.Cllr. Beecher informed CCC that there are two pot holes at theQuarry Rd. one of which, he said, is ’caving in underneath’. "Thestopcock cover outside the Thai restaurant is missing and needsreplacing," he added. He again reminded CCC that disabledspaces have been requested for both Raheen Park and the CoastGuard Station. Cllr. Murray wondered why work at SruthÆn na Sall had come toa stop. She advised CCC of a pot hole outside the Coffee Pot. Shethen expressed the view that ’something has to be done aboutClaycastle (boy racers) before adding that while cutting has takenplace at the slob bank a section was left. She took this opportuni-ty to suggest that the slob bank walk be extended. Cllr. Casey asked that the Council ’move with the times’ regardinga traffic management plan for Youghal. He expressed his desire tosee the introduction of mini roundabouts, extensively usedthroughout Europe, and the construction of emergency servicefriendly ramps ’that only slow down speeding traffic’. Cllr. Savageasked that CCC not to forget the extension of the outfall pipe atthe front strand. Cllr. Beecher revisited the dog fouling issue bystating his wish to see public health posters erected at the begin-ning and end of all popular walks.

Mayor’s Business. The mayor expressed his gratitude to the Youghal GAA club fortheir hospitality to Eastern Europeans on a bike tour recently. Healso thanked Michael Hussey, Christy Parker and Seany Ring aswell, as Doyles chip shop. The Mayor paid tribute to the PublicRealm Conference saying it was a ’great showcase’ for the town.Praise was also forthcoming for art students at Pobailscoil naTronide for their efforts in creating posters for disability aware-ness. He said he hoped the Council ’might use the winning entry’for the Council’s own campaign for creating awareness. TheMayor counteracted the negative publicity over the recent loss ofa blue flag on the front strand by expressing his pride at erectingthe blue flag for Claycastle beach. "We should remember thatsome coastal towns don’t have any blue flag," he said. Cllr.Murray added that following forthnightly checks on water qualitythe water in Youghal is ’now perfect on all three beaches’.

GOOD NEWS FOR FRONT STRAND YOUGHALWhile so far we have not suceeded in regaining our Blue Flag forthis beach, the visitors to the Front Strand can swim with theknowledge that the water is of a Blue Flag standard. There havebeen two water quality tests done in the past three weeks and bothhave shown that the water quality is of a very high standard. Iwould be hopeful that we will regain our Blue Flag for next year,it would be highly unlikely that we could have such a bad combi-nation of weather conditions hit us again all at the one time. TheBlue Flags will be announced in Dundalk on Monday June 9th andformal handing over of flags to each area will take place shortlyafter. Claycastle will have a Blue Flag and a lot of work is beingundertaken to ensure that Redbarn will also be a recipent in thenear future. Water quality testing is also being done for Redbarnand again the tests are excellant and meet Blue Flag standard, carparking is presently being worked on.Slob bank Amenity Walk Work has started to improve this won-derful walk. Grasscutting and spraying should be all finished inthe next week or so. The continuation of this walkway will be pur-sued and hopefully general improvements will be visible allround. This particular walk is enjoyed by an enormous number ofpeople every day and I have no doubt that there are many out therethat have never esperienced this wonderful facility.Struhan na Sali Works ongoing on this County Council affordablehousing estate. The green area will now be a usable space with theprovision of additional badly needed carparking spaces. Theseworks should make a huge improvement to the area.LANDFILL SITEA lot of work has been undertaken by Cork County Council toalleviate the odours that are coming from the Landfill. The latestupdate is that the contract for capping works has being fast-tracked, it is envisaged that the installation of a capping system forthe landfill is the permanent solution to the odour issue at the land-fill.. The capping works for Cells 6,7 & 8 started on June 3rd, thecontractor is also preparing a detailed works programme and time-frame for the project at present also the contract is being tailoredto address sources of fugitive emissions of gas from the site. Thecapping involves sealing the cells with a covering of heavy dutyplastic that will be welded together, when cell is completely cov-ered it will then be covered with soil with ventilation pipesstragetically placed to allow for gases that are to be flared, it willbe a much more controlled situation. Hopefully there should bemajor improvements, in addition the amount of waste being takenin at present is decreasing with waste collectors looking for alter-native landfill. The Youghal landfill has about 12 - 18 months leftbefore ceasing to operate.MAJOR ROADWORKS TAKING PLACEMain Street Midleton will be closed from the Gyratory to the MainSt. Junction with The Rock. The works are scheduled to take placefrom Monday June 23rd to Friday 18th July 5pm. The purpose ofthe proposed temporary closure is to facilitate full road recon-struction including installation of ducting and drainage, recon-struction and resurfacing of roadway and road markings.Alternative Route is as follows: For Main St. traffic - viaRiverside Way, Balick Road, and CBS Rd., Dungourney Roadtraffic - Via Broomfield Village, and Mill Road. The area engineerhas assured the traders of Midleton that this work will be done inthe fastest possible timeframe. It is unfortunate that these workshad to be done during the summer months, but on this occassionit was unavoidable. I would be advocating that no major infrastur-al works take place in any of our towns and villages during themonths of July, August and December.Killeagh The works in Killeagh will commence during Septemberand finish in January. The contract will include two men operat-ing a stop and go system. There is no alternative route suggested, but most local traffic will be aware of options that can be taken.Further updates will be passed on nearer to time.

N25 between Carrigtohill and Midleton The proposed closure ofseveral medians on the N25 has caused huge concern for the peo-ple of Carrigtohill in particular. The Midleton Area Committeewould not agree to sign off on this proposal until the short termoptions and longterm options were put out to public consultationespecially for the people of the area to have their say. These sug-gested median closures are as a result of a safety review on theN25 between Carrigtohill and Midleton, it was felt that the closureof 4 of the median openings and the realignment of the remaining2 median openings would benefit all road users by making thissection of road safer. Meeting will be held outlining both sets ofplans early July.Addressing Litter on N25 The whole issue of how we deal withthis problem has had an enormous amount of media coverage.Cork County Council have started litter picking and grass/hedgecutting in the last month. In order to maintain the N25 with onegrasscutting operation and one spraying operation it is at a cost ofabout 200,000 to the Council. It would seem fairly obvious thatthe resouces are just not there to maintain the upkeep that isrequired in order that the area in general would look presentableat all times. With the support of the Midleton Area Committee amotion has gone forward on behalf of Cllr Barbara Murray callingon the NRA to remove all landscaping from the middle of the N25and replace with a concrete barrier. These barriers are already inplace in the South Link Rd and also on the Watergrasshill road. They look clean, slick and there is no maintenance, there wouldalso be the advantage of gaining more road space. Response fromNRA is awaited.European Beach Challenge June 20th -22nd Its all systems go forthis huge event for Youghal anyone looking for an exciting week-end Youghal is the place to be.

Youghal Visual Arts FestivalAt 4pm on a warm Friday in May a small but intimate

group of family and friends gathered in the Youghal Town Libraryto witness the presentation of an oil painting by local artist the lateBilly Flavin. In the first year of the Youghal Visual Arts Festival the festival’sCentral Gallery was opened for the week to the public in what isnow the Youghal Town Library. The space lent itself well as avisual arts space and a huge array of local, national and interna-tional artists displayed work for the week. Among these exhibitorswas a local artist by the name of Billy Flavin. Word had got to thefestival committee that he had some paintings that would fit wellin the exhibition and after further investigation this proved to bevery true. Billy was invited to exhibit a selection of his work in theCentral Gallery as part of the ’Moments’ exhibition and in a localshop window as part of the ’Walking Gallery’. As part of the ’not for profit’ ethos of the festival it was decidedthat a painting would be purchased by the festival committee to bedonated to a local public space as thanks to the towns people forthe support that they gave to the first Visual Arts Festival. An oilpainting entitled ’Winter’ by Billy Flavin was selected. At this point in time the Youghal Library was in process of relo-cating to the site of the Central Gallery and it was decided that thepresentation would be delayed until they were settled in to theirnew premises. This took a little longer than expected and the finalopening date was nearly a year later on the 6th June 2007.Presentation of the painting was delayed as sadly on the very theday of the opening of the new library Billy Flavin passed away. Astribute to such a talented local artist it is fitting that the painting is

now exhibited in such an accessible space. "Billy was also a greatlover of books," said his wife, Bridget at the ceremony. "He wouldhave been so happy to know that his painting was hung in thelibrary where so many people can enjoy it." Youghal Visual Arts Festival would like to thank the Cork CountyLibrarian, Ruth Flanagan for her support and for allowing them touse the space for the first ever festival. They would also like tothank her for making the journey to Youghal amidst her busyschedule to receive the painting on behalf of the Youghal TownLibrary. Youghal Visual Arts Festival would like to give a very specialthanks to the family of the late Billy Flavin, our thoughts are withyou at this time. For further details phone 0874126213 or email [email protected]

ARCHER KATIE AIMS FORSPONSORSHIP

By Christy Parker One of Youghal’s most promising young sports stars is hoping shecan fulfill her immense promise despite increasing demands onher time andr e s o u r c e s .Katie O’Brien,17, is fast fash-ioning a majorreputation inthe world ofarchery. She currentlyholds thefemale indoorand outdoorNational JuniorChampionhiptitles. She hasrepresented hercountry overthe past two years, and was part of the squad that finished secondin the 2007 Euronations championships. Already being coached by Irish national coach Hans Brun, at theArtemis Cork Archeries club, Katie is deemed a potential futureOlympian -possibly London in 2012. Her immense potential hasseen her selected to travel to Egypt at the end of June. "It will betweleve days of Olympic style training, where we will shoot 450arrows per day," says the excited teenager. Afterwards she isexpected to join the Irish Junior squad prior to the 2008Euronations in Wales and, should Ireland enter, the WorldChampionships in Turkey in September. Her very participation and her progress beyond these competitionsis in serious doubt however. Presently unemployed, the strain onher resources is immense. "I have to travel to Cork every week totrain at Artemis and I also travel there to practice in my dad’sbackyard whenever I can. Then I have to travel to competitions allover the country and buy equipment, which is very expensive,"she explains. "Its very hard because I get no funding whatsoever. The Sports Council will fund part of our Egypt expenses but wehave to contribute to that too." While her family do what they can, Katie has now composed let-ters seeking help from local and Cork businesses. "I desperatelyneed sponsorship of some sort," she pleads, her eyes, for the firsttime, losing their sparkle when talking of the sport for which shelives. "I don’t care if it’s one off, a longer term sponsorship deal orif I can get some sort of work to get the finances I need to keepgoing." Friendly and inherently humorous, Katie’s pre-occupation withher precision sport is neither novel nor new. "I can’t rememberwhat first inspired me, but I remember shooting arrows when Iwas just five, during a trip to Wales," she smiles. "I can’t remem-ber never wanting to shoot." She joined Artemis four years ago, since when her ability has blossomed. The eldest of four girls, she"simply couldn’t live" without the sport. "I injured my shoulder afew months ago and nearly cracked up," she declares earnestly. When not pointing an arrow, music is one of the few other stringsto her bow. It’s not a participatry pursuit of course, but Nirvana,Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Lincoln Park, manage to hit the mark.Elsewhere, the Munster and Ireland rugby sides may somehowmanage to distract her gaze, though not for long! Archery is one of Ireland’s less debated sports. The country’sOlympic representation is usually quite small, since first beingrepresented by James Conroy at the 1976 games. In 1984, twowomen, Hazel Greene (20th place) and Mary Vaughan (39th) car-ried the flag. "We’ve yet to win a medal," Katie sighs. The qualifi-cation for this honour was attained by the boys playing in rankingtournaments in Carlow over the past 6 mths. This has been a won-derful achievement, the 3 boys have brought great honour not onlyto the CYMS but also to their town of Youghal and of course totheir families as well. Michael, Aaron and Kenny are excellentyoung members of the Youghal CYMS. Their attention to prac-tice, advice and their down to earth attitude will stand them ingood stead when they take part in this international tournamentand all of the members wish the lads every success. Over the last3 years 5 junior members of our society have represented theircountry these boys represent everything that sport should be about, the "occasion" alone of playing for your country is an experiencein itself, and it is important that these 3 young boys enjoy themoment and keep their feet firmly on the ground. I am sure thatthese young boys will perform in a manner that will do justice totheir endeavours.

CYCLE YOUGHALWelcome to Youghal - I do hope you have a pleasant holiday here.It is one of those amazing seaside towns that will one day be dis-covered and probably ruined if it is!When you come along the road into Youghal and come over thebrow of the hill after Moll Goggins corner, you suddenly see theLighthouse and behind it the whole panorama of the riverBlackwater. There may be a few sailing boats in the bay . Stop theclocks - it is holiday time. This is the first of two articles lookingat the possibility of cycling in the Youghal area . Let me assure youit is a wonderful place to cycle.Check the website of the local cycling club - called YoughalCycling Club - for more detailed instructions on cycling in thearea. It also contains photographs of Ardmore and other sights tovisit by bike.Ardmore is my first choice of a cycle for visitors- this combinestwo wonderful possibilities - you could cycle to Ardmore and thendo the cliff walk ! If you don’t have a bike you can still do thewalk! If you don’t like walking you do a little more cycling. Checkthe website. Why Ardmore you might ask? - you must see the Round Tower, the early Christian carvings on the gable wall of St. Declans , theeven earlier monastic ruins, see a fine Ogham Stone, you shoulddo the Cliff Walk and you can enjoy some wonderful food if youstop in one of the restaurants in Ardmore. Believe me it is worthit! The view from the cliff is stunningly beautiful, the wide beachis unspoilt, the old coastguard station will bring you back in timeto an era of shipwrecks and smugglers. The cycle is not toodemanding and quite short - about 15 kilometres each way - themain Youghal Dungarvan road is very wide and suited to cycling. There is a gentle climb but not too strenuous. You can do it ! Route : Starting at the Clock Gate in Youghal ( the centre of town)head east out of town, following the one way traffic flow. You passtwo roundabouts - the first is near Tesco and Lidl - keep going inthe same easterly direction. At the second roundabout take thethird exit and you soon come to Youghal bridge. The easiest routeis to stay on the main Dungarvan road until you reach theArdmore turning point after about 8 kilometres. It is an easy cycle- not too demanding, not too long. You could then return by the same route to Youghal, or you couldreturn a few other ways - check the Youghal Cycling club websitefor other possibilities like a visit to Goat Island or Ferrypointbefore rejoining the main road and heading home. Our next cycle will be to the west of Youghal - until the next timethen - on yer bike! Pedal for pleasure!.

THE THUNDERCATS ARECOMING

New festival era beckonsBy Christy Parker

Youghal is awash with anticipation as what is expected to be thetown’s finest ever festival draws closer from the horizon. On theweekend June 20th-22nd, it will hit the shore, hopefully sweepingall before it on a wave of celebration. Anchoring it all is Thundercat racing. Over 30 of these high-speed,versatile craft will compete in the Thundercat European BeachChallenge at Claycastle. There will be eight races across two daysover a standard ’M’ shaped course (with chicane) of 400 by 300metres. Up to 30,000 visitors are expected to watch the two-manboats perform at over 60mph adjacent to shore. The weekend will form part of the 2008 European ThundercatRYA (Royal Yachting Association) Championship, which is runover eight months. Primarily contested on UK and European cir-cuits, this will mark its debut in Irish waters. The Youghal com-petitors will largely be a mix of French, British and newly compet-ing Irish racers. The races will be conducted under the guidance of the Irish SailingAssociation’s new Motorboat Division. With Thundercat boatscosting as little as 12,000, the Association hopes the Youghalventure will initiate a new dimension in watersports in Ireland. Thundercats are derived from South Africa’s surf rescue boats, which are designed to face extreme challenges. Skimming acrossthe water, the hull riding on a cushion of air bubbles, at full speedthey exercise a 2g pull at corners, giving it a better power-to-weight ratio than a Ferrari. While spectators may crave fine weath-er, the boats perform most dramatically in adverse conditions. Thisis one outdoor attraction the Irish summer cannot derail. That being said, there Thundercats’ appeal comes with limitations. At the risk of being hurled from atop the Clock Gate, it’s worthconsidering the wider reality. While the racing’s immediate impacton spectators is likely to generate excitement, the fact that thesport, its rules, the overall competition and the competitors aretotally alien to the spectators may make it difficult for them toretain an interest once the initial novelty has passed. More worry-ing, if the weather is inclement, Claycastle may prove as much ofa test to the spectators as to the boat crews. The festival surrounding the racing is arguably more important tothe success of the venture than the racing itself. If, as is being

considered, boat racing is to visit us every year, then building avaried menu of attractions around it is crucial to instil a widerappeal and identity.

This first year brings promise. The weekend will open on Friday21st with possibly the most spectacular firework display ever seenin the county, courtesy of the UK’s Skybusters company. An Abba-esque outdoor concert and a Thundercat parade will ensue in thetown centre and thereafter the weekend will be awash with variousstreet music and entertainments, including, various marquees, craftmarkets, aerobatic displays and an air/sea rescue exercise.Coincidentally, the extraordinary Cork Summer Festival of theSenses with the Sensazione theatrical fairground also visit over theweekend

TOWN’S SUPPORTPROVES CRUCIAL

At the festival’s official launch, satisfaction was palpable amongstthose fervently -and financially- supporting the event. Theyinclude Cork County and Youghal Town Council, the YoughalSocio and Economic Strategy Group, Youghal Chamber ofCommerce and Tourism and the wider business community. "Ireally don’t know how businesses have managed to get the moneybut it looks like we will actually exceed our target," said ChamberChairman, Michael Farrell. Fionan Murray of Thundercat racingrights holders Medaza, said his company were "flabbergasted bythe positive reaction from all quarters.. The co-operation has beenunbelievable," he concluded. Medaza also own the rights to the proposed Northern Europe legof the ultra glamorous, super-rich P1 Power Boat WorldChampionships. Modelled on motor racing’s Formula 1, Youghalremains favourite to host this mega event from 2009-13, with theThundercats considered a ’systems test’ for P1. Ultimately, assum-ing government funding is forthcoming, P1 executives will decideon Youghal’s candidacy. All may be known by September. Acquisition of P1 would cast Youghal as a major water sports cen-tre, with immense benefits for south Munster generally. It is esti-mated that the three-day event alone would enhance the region byover 260m over five years, visitor figures are projected at circa150,000 per day, with an estimated global audience of 2.2 billion.Job creation, infrastructure improvements and maritime-relatedindustry would spiral. Tourist Guide to Services & Shopping in YoughalYoughal News.....June 12th 2008

Youghal is to play host to a fantastic and unique theatrical funfaircalled "Sensazione" for four nights starting on Tuesday 24th June. The funfair is being brought to Youghal by the MidsummerFestival who have decided to expand the festival outside of CorkCity with the help of Cork County and Youghal Town Councils, and with the support of a few of us in Youghal who want more artsactivity happening in our town. I was asked by the MidsummerFestival to "preview" the funfair in London, and I must say I thinkit will be a big hit after it sets up in Catherine Street Car-park, rightat the heart of the town Centre.Of course we in Youghal have a long and honourable tradition ofboth funfair and circus, with our own Perks funfair having enter-tained people in their thousands over the years. We have alsogiven great support to Fossetts and Duffys circuses, and only theother day I was reminded that my own granduncle Danny"Waddle" Sheehan was himself a professional acrobat, and part ofthe famous "Amingos" that many of the old people of the town stillfondly remember."Sensazione" though is an entirely different experience to what

we have become accustomed to over the years. From the minute you enter the funfair, you enter a world that is amagical combination of stories and situations told by imaginative, almost fairy tale characters. They will entertain you with brilliantSpanish Dance, Fire Eating, acrobatic tricks, and great comedyand stories. Then there’s the funfair itself. From the outside it looks like manya normal funfair. There is a big Ferris wheel, and a "magic round-about" and two ferocious spinning wheels that will put the heart,as they say, cross-ways in you.But this is also where "Sensazione" is different from the rest. There is no electricity used to power the funfair. In what must be

the ultimate statement in Eco-friendliness, the entire carnival is"powered" by us, the audience. So, the Ferris Wheel is powered by other machines, like hamsterwheels, that are great fun to run around in. And as you run aroundon the wheel, this starts to turn the big Wheel. Volunteers are needed to turn the "magic roundabout" while otherssit in pairs on turn-table seats. As the roundabout turns it trans-forms into something else, in fact a kind of giant dress, and anoth-er character appears, and another story is told to you as you turn. All of this "harnessed" energy powers the carnival itself, and evengenerates the electricity needed to light the funfair. The organis-ers, in appreciation of all this thirsty work have even put in a bar,

and the drink is free. But you will have to cycle on the spot for afew minutes to qualify for a token for your free refreshment."Sensazione" has won international acclaim for its imaginative

and innovative approach to circus, carnival, funfair and theatre. This show won the Caixa Catalunya prize for the Best Premiere atLa Fira de Teatre in September 2007. The award is given by aninternational jury of professionals from the performing arts. The show is the brainchild of two extraordinary companies, Laikaand the Time Circus Collective. "Laika" is a theatre companyoperating at an international level that creates ’theatre of the sens-es’: imaginative productions aimed at children/youngsters andgrown-ups who have "retained their child-like capacity for sur-prise". Time Circus Collective is a travelling company fromAntwerp. The commitment and daring with which they build theirmachines is impressive. They create work with which man blendswith machine and the actor merges with his props. Sensazione is suitable for adults and children over the age of 12,the show lasts for 75 minutes, with no interval, although there arepauses between sections of the show. Younger children will enjoythe show too, but some of the machines are not really suitable forthem. On the night I saw the show at Victoria Park in London, Ibrought along my cousin and her family, including my nephew ofeight years, who did like the rides, and was a little frustrated thathe couldn’t go on all of them. We also brought my five year oldniece, who was too small for all but one of the rides, but who wasenthralled and fascinated by the larger than life characters of theFunfair actors, and their incredible stories and energetic acrobaticsand dance. I think it is true to say that "Sensazione" will bring us on a journeythat reminds us of the best that childhood and dreaming has tooffer and Youghal is in for a real treat when "Sensazione" comeson the 24th June. There are three shows: 6.30 p.m., 7.45 p.m. and9 p.m. Midsummer Festival, the Tourist Office and Creeds areselling tickets at 16 and 14 with special deals for families. Theshow runs until Sunday 29th June.

July. This is Youghal’s third victory athome having already accounted for Kinsale and Raffeen Creek.A more exciting finale could hardly have been scripted. E. Ryanand F.Galvin lost to a birdie on the nineteenth hole. M.O’DogertyAnd D. Hogan lost on the eighteenth. The first good news for Youghal was the victory of L. Kelly andT. Linehan on the seventeenth.More bad news for Youghal followed. Willy White and Danny McSweeney were two down with three to play. An intermittent pieceof good news for Youghal was that J.Colman and A. Ruxton werewinning comfortably out the course. So all present knew it wasdown to Willy and Danny. It is no exageration to say that Willyplayed wily and Danny was uncanny.Willy put Danny on the green at the par three 16th. where twoputts for par won the hole. One down two to go. Danny hit a peachup the par four 17th. Willy hit unto the green and two putts dulywon the hole. All square with one to play.Danny hit another magnificent drive down the eighteenth to benearly equalled by the Kanturk man. Kanturk to play first and theshot was pulled to the left of the new green, leaving a difficult shotover the bunker to the hole. Willy cleverly played his approachshot to the front of the green just short of the bunker but an easy

shot to the hole. Advantage Youghal. Sadly for Kanturk their thirdshot went into the bunker and it took two shots to come out. Dannychipped safely up the green. When Kanturk failed to sink the puttfor a six they graciously conceded the match. There were scenes of delight from the Youghal supporters withnone more pleased than Bertie Lupton, Team Manager and selec-tor. The Kanturk manager stated that while dissapointed to lose, thanked Youghal For the friendly atmosphere in which the matchwas played and wished Youghal every success in the final.Youghal will now meet either Monkstown or Douglasin the finalwhich must be played by July 4th.JUNIOR COACHINGStarting Tuesday 1st July - Junior Coaching for all ages at 9.30. MARTIN HALLINAN CALLSFOR A NO VOTE

Speaking while canvassing at the weekend, Cllr Martin Hallinancondemned the bullying and scare tactics being used by the gov-ernment to frighten those who believe that the Lisbon treaty is badfor Ireland.Martin Hallinan said: It is a sign of the governments frustrationthat they have increasingly turned to bullying and scare tactics tofrighten off people from exercising their right to vote no.When the French and Dutch rejected the Constitution in 2005 ithad no negative effect on their economies, and nor would it here.Rather supporting the treaty will actively undermine workers payand conditions, threaten vital public services and assist in theintroduction of tax harmonisation. When the French and the Dutch rejected the EU Constitutiontheir governments respected and defended the peoples right to sayno. The Irish government needs to stand up for the interests of thiscountry and deal with the concerns, which people are raising.I firmly believe the Irish people can secure a better deal if wevote no on June 12th and give the Irish government a strong man-date for new negotiations with our European partners.memorable show.

YOUGHAL GAAINTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPYOUGHAL 0-8 v KISKEAM 0-10Played in Mourne Abbey this championship encounter broughtout the best performance of the year from the Youghal Boys andbut for the lack of finishing power the outcome would have beenvery diferent. Youghal started brightly but despite holding themajority of posession were only two points up after the first quar-ter. Kiskeam got on the scoreboard and seemed to pick up scoreswhenever they were on the attack with a very lively full forwardline and Youghal struggled and had to work very hard for anyscores gained. The lack of a scoring forward proved the diferenceas many chances went abegging both from play and frees. Thesecond half was much the same as Youghal moved the ball verywell from back to front but couldn’t finish off the moves andKiskeam scored with every attack. It was a game that the selectorsfound hard to call afterwards, delighted with the effort from thelads but a feeling of leaving this one behind having dominatedpossession by at least a 60 - 40 percentage. Youghal now face thedreaded relegation playoffs and lets hope we can survive this asthe future for football looks very secure with the potential beingshown by our underage and minor teams.Team: P. Mackey, P. O’Laochdha, N. Farrelly, S. Twomey, B.Ring, B. Coleman, C. O’Laochdha, J. Grace, Damian Ring, V.Murray, R. Cunningham, N. Roche, P. Monaghan, B. Cooper, M.Mulcahy. Subs Used: A. Kenny, A. Fox, E. Coleman.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING LEAGUE 02/06/2008YOUGHAL 0-14 v COURCEY ROVERS 2-7A great game of Hurling played in near perfect conditions inCopperalley. Youghal started well and were 0-9 to 0-2 at the breakagainst a Courcey side fancied to lift the County Championship.John Grace was outstanding at full back and is realy making theposition his own after playing at centre back or midfield earlier inthe campaign. The midfield pairing of Damian Ring and LeighDesmond were always comfortable with the latter chipping in 7points along the way. The forwards were lively and a brace fromBrendan Ring and Richie Cunningham saw Youghal in a verycomanding position going into the last few minutes only to con-cede 2 goals late on to leave a nerve jangling finish.Team: M. Mulcahy, V. Murray, J. Grace, P. O’Laochdha, A.Murphy, B. Coleman, S. Twomey, D. Ring, L. Desmond, BrendanRing, B. Cooper, Barry Ring, E. Coleman, R. Cunningham, M.Cronin. Subs used: S. Spillane, C. JUVENILE CLUBU16 HURLING LEAGUE 26/05/2008BRICKEY RANGERS 1-8 v YOUGHAL 3-14The score just about sums this one up. Youghal dominated fromthe start and pulled some of their stronger players off at an earlystage to give the fringe players a chance to make their mark. It wasone way traffic throughout with Conor O’Sullivan directing thingsfrom centre back. Barry Walsh had a fine game at corner backdealing well with anything that came his way while the classyAaron Daly was always a thorn in the side of the Brickeysdefence.Team: A. Curtin, L. McCarthy, D. Ryan, B. Walsh, D. Mulcahy, C.O’Sullivan, L. Lyons Troy, R. Tobin, K. Daly, R. Desmond, D.Power, R. Lane, A. Daly, K. Coyne, D. Cashman.

U14 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP 29/05/2008YOUGHAL 0-6 v CASTLEL YONS 4-8Youghal started well against a much stronger Castlelyons side inBallynoe but conceded 4 goals in quick concession mid waythrough the first half that put an end to this as a contest. To their

credit Youghal battled hard in the second half and playing withouttwo of their stronger players in the form of David O’Mahony andDean Lewis realy put it up to their opponents but never lookedlike closing the gap. These lads can hold their heads high as theyare playing in a grade higher than they have ever done before andare improving with every game.Team: M. O’Neill, C. Morrisson, M. Coady, R. O’Sullivan, P.Flavin, L. McCarthy, G. O’Regan, C. Keenaghan, C. Coyne, A.O’Neill, J. Whelan, C. Farrell, L. O’Flynn, O. Dempsey, J.Murphy. Subs: M. Kennefick, M. Flaherty, D. Daly.

U8 HURLING CHALLENGEKILLEAGH 2-0 v YOUGHAL 1-1The U8s travelled to Killeagh for their first ever away match andonly their second game ever on Tuesday evening and dominatedfrom the start with most of the play in the Killeagh half. Half for-wards Jake Cooper and Padraig Quilligan kept the pressure onwhile midfielder Liam Moylan opened the scoring with a longrange point. The half back line of Peter Kirk, Tiernan McCarthyand Rory McSweeney ensured the ball was kept in the Killeaghhalf and the pressure eventually paid off with a goal from RossBulman before the break. Youghal were cought cold at the start ofthe second half when Killeagh goaled and the game ebbed andflowed from then on and Killeagh secured the win with anotherGoal. The margin might have been greater but for a strong p_rfor-mance from Connor Cremmin between the sticks for Youghal.Once again this was a great peQormance from the Youghal boyswith great credit due to the coaches and selectors who give sofr_ly of their time each and every Saturday Morning.Team: Ben Dalton, Kyle Brown, Connor Cremin, Ethan Cliffe,Rory McSweeney, Peter Kirk, Jake O’Brien, Liam Ansbro, JakeCooper, Padraig Quillligan, Ruairi McMahon, Aaron O’Regan,Ross Bulman, Christian Persaud, Jack McGrath, Con or Dorney,Tiernan McCarthy, Sean Flavin, Adam Born, CianO’Sullivan,James Varney, Oran Finn.

Youghal United Under 10FC win Leonard Rodgers

Memorial Cup The sun blazed down on Clashmore last Saturday, June 7th whenYoughal United U10’s won the Leonard Rodgers Memorial Cupon Clashmore Ramblers’ football pitch at Pablo Park. Leonard Rodgers was a native of Clashmore who invested a lot oftime and money into his local football club but sadly Leonardpassed away this year. This memorial was in his honour. 8 teamsparticipated for the first Memorial and hopefully there will bemany more to come.It was an exciting, nail biting final between Youghal and RailwayAthletic FC from Kilkenny, who have been playing together as ateam for the last three years. Both teams were as tough as nails, with strong skilful players onboth sides, but it was Youghal who had the strongest team and wonthe day when it lead to penalties wining at 2 - 0. The penaltiesstarted with Railway missing their first shot, then it was Youghal’sturn with a goal from Peter Breslin, one super save from AaronClohessy in goal for the Youghal team and the winning goal wasby Conor Walsh. What a triumph! This was Youghal United’s U10 first competitive event and what astrong team they are. If this under 10 team continue like this whoknows where they could take us!Up the Youghal Boys!A big thank you goes out to the professional organisation on theday especially to Vinny Coonan and the parents of the ClasmoreRamblers’ players who made cakes and sandwiches and cookedburgers and hotdogs on the BBQ.

PAINTING DONATED TO YOUGHALGOLF CLUB BY RENOWNED

ARTIST PHILLIP GREY

It was with deep appreciation that Youghal Golf Club took posses-sion of a painting, by well known Cobh artist Phillip Grey, donat-ed to the club by Maurice Kelly. The painting depicts the fourth green as viewed from the tenth teebox, and it is fitting that such a lovely painting of the fourth holeis destined to hang in the 15th hole.Maurice Kelly, who kindly commissioned the painting, leftYoughal in 1952 to make his fortune in the States. Like many ofthe freshmen, Maurice succeeded admirably. Maurice started inChicago and travelled and moved extensively across the U.S.A.before settling now in Nashville.Maurice over the years continued to keep in contact with friendsand remaining family in Youghal and always had a soft touch forYoughal Golf Club. The club is thankful for Maurice’s inspiringsupport which he’s culminated in the presentation of this beautifulpainting.

Youghal is now one of four Irish beaches which failed to meet EUwater standards. The European Commission’s annual bathing water report showsthat most of Ireland’s beaches met EU hygiene standards in 2007.Some 97% of coastal bathing areas and 100% of bathing sites inrivers and lakes comply with the mandatory standards set out inthe EU’s Bathing Water Directive. This compares to EU averagesof 95% for beaches and 89% for rivers and lakes. Just 4 Irishbeaches failed to meet the minimum requirements - these were NaForbacha and Clifden in Co. Galway, Balbriggan in Co. Dublinand the main beach in Youghal Co. Cork.

Member States must comply with the mandatory val-ues but may adopt the stricter standards and non-binding guidevalues.New bathing water legislation was adopted in 2006 to ensurecoherence with other EU water legislation and in particular theWater Framework Directive. It updates the parameter and themonitoring provisions with the latest scientific knowledge andplaces greater emphasis on providing information to the public onthe quality of bathing areas. EUROPEAN DESTINATIONSOF EXCELLENCE

Tourism & Local Intangible Heritage Competition 08 Result & Report

Youghal was pipped to the post in the recent EuropeanDestinations of Excellence - Tourism & Intangible HeritageCompetition 2008 by the eventual winners, Carlingford & TheCooley Peninsula, Co. Louth.Following an intensive evaluation process of the top 5 destinationsby an expert panel of adjudicators, the Youghal Socio-EconomicDevelopment Group (the applicant on behalf of Youghal) werehighly recommended by the panel for their levels of commitmentin developing Youghal and their presentation of the destination. The evaluation panel made the following comments and recom-mendations:• This is a very impressive group and destination. The group hasthe capacity to use their experience and to move Youghal forwardin the future. • To ensure their position in the top five destinations, Youghal sub-mitted an excellent application. It was well presented and concisewith plenty of relevant information and good visuals. • The heritage regeneration and socio-economic plan is excellentand could be a best practice model for similar destinations• Progress on action plans to date has been very good; in particu-lar, work on living culture is evident and plans in place will ensuresustainability.• Priority should be given to developing core products (i.e. walk-ing, cycling, etc.) for the target market. • There is a wealth of resources in Youghal but more developmentof these is needed to make them accessible to the visitor• The target market for Youghal should be segmented and focusedpackages developed. Consideration should be given to developingpackages outside of the main tourist season.• A good comprehensive presentation was provided by a very pro-fessional group with good representation and partnership in place.Commenting on the report, Tourism Development Officer forYoughal, Aileen Ahern said:"While it was disappointing to have missed out on the overallprize, the application and evaluation process show just how muchYoughal has developed as a tourist destination. It was a greatachievement to get into the top 5 out of all the entries made. Weknow we still have a lot of hard work ahead, but with various ini-tiatives such as the upcoming European Beach Challenge,, the re-developed www.youghal.ie and a tourism marketing plan for thetown underway, the future is looking a lot brighter for tourism inthe town."

Speed Up New N25 ImprovementsBetween Youghal and Midleton

Cllr Martin Hallinan has expressed disappointment at the pace ofthe proposed improvements on the N25 between Midleton andYoughal and called on the National Roads Authority to give thatstretch of road the priority it needs. The urgent need for major improvements on this stretch of road, such as the by-passes for Castlemartyr and Killeagh is not beingresponded to by the National Roads Authority (NRA) with suffi-cient urgency. We need a dual carriageway, including a by pass ofeach village, between Midleton and Youghal,The development of Killeagh and Castlemartyr is being hamperedby the volume of traffic each town has to endure and urgent reliefis needed. Youghal needs good transport access if it is to reversethe flow of jobs and investment from the town. While I welcome the announcement that planning and designworks have begun, the NRA needs to get its finger out and providethe type of road which will begin to deal with the serious lack ofinfrastructural development in this part of East Cork. It has to givepriority to speedily completing a dual carriageway betweenMidleton and Youghal.

COUNCIL AWAITING50,000 FOR PLAYGROUND

RESTORATION WORK.By Christy Parker

Parents will be pleased to know that repair work on the MillenniumPark playground is likely to begin shortly. The facility has beenclosed since early in the year, as the Council seeks 50,000 fund-ing to undertake the work. ’We hope the money likely to come onstream imminently and the work can begin,’ says Town Clerk LiamRyan. ’It should be open before summer ends.’ As well as repairs to the playground structures the chief outlayfocuses on a new surface. The present tattered tiling system is to bereplaced by a different system of ground covering, Mr Ryanexplains, adding that, contrary to rumour, "no claims have beenlodged against the council" in regard to the playground. Playground maintenance -not unlike children themselves- is a cost-ly exercise. While Youghal’s other two playgrounds at ChestnutDrive and Blackwater Heights continue to flourish, Mr. Ryanreveals that over 60,000 has been invested in them in recenttimes. Meanwhile the Council is looking at a site near the town centrewith a view to establishing another outdoor games and play area.Team sport facilities like basketball would be facilitated on whatamounts to under an acre of space. Further information on this ini-tiative will be forthcoming shortly.

IT’S OFFICIAL - SUMMER’SHERE AS BLUE FLAG IS

RAISED IN YOUGHALYoughal’s Claycastle Beach was once again confirmed as one ofthe best beaches in the world when it was awarded ’Blue FlagStatus’ by An Taisce on Monday 9th June 2008.Blue Flag is a prestigious, international award scheme which actsas a guarantee to tourists that the beach they are visiting is one ofthe best in the world. It is awarded to coastal destinations whichhave achieved the highest quality in water, facilities, safety, envi-ronmental education and management.Speaking at the Flag raising ceremony at Claycastle Beach, AileenAhern Tourism Development Officer for Youghal said: "The beachhere at Claycastle is a fabulous place to visit and that’s now offi-cial. For the first time ever in Ireland Youghal was chosen to playhost to the Thundercat European Beach Challenge from 20th -22nd June - international recognition of Youghal’s status as thefinest coastal resort in Ireland. Local and County Councillor Barbara Murray, in welcoming theBlue Flag award to Claycastle Beach commented "Its unfortunatethat we have just one blue flag beach this year, but we expect ourloss to be short term. One test (out of 10 taken), on one day costus the flag. But we fully support the decision of An Taisce, it onlyserves to motivate us to work towards our target for Youghal ofhaving 3 blue flags, in Claycastle, Front Strand and Redbarn." Redbarn beach has entered a pilot phase which will make it eligi-ble for the blue flag award in 2009 providing it maintains its excel-lent water quality.A series of tests carried out in May on behalf of Cork CountyCouncil on the water in Youghal’s Front Strand are also set to reas-sure bathers that the beach is safe for swimming. Results confirmwater quality is firmly back to Blue Flag standards, a further indi-cation that the one negative test in July of last year was due tounprecedented levels of rainfall in the area.

HISTORY OF THE TENNIS CLUB Youghal LTC has an illustrious history, with grass courts first laid in 1893by the British regiment which was stationed in Youghal. The groundswhich were known as the paddocks enclosed by the original stone walls, were donated to the Club by the Kenniry Family at a nominal rent for aslong as the game of Tennis is played there. Over the years the club hasdeveloped and progressed with Tarmacadam courts replacing the grasscourts in the 1980’s Facilities Development ProgrammeIn early 2003 the Club made a decision to borrow 95,000 to purchase thelease for the grounds and to provide seed capital to fund a significantupgrading and expansion of facilities. This decision was made so that theClub could offer the very best facilities for local players and visitors alike.Works included in the programme are as follows:• Renovation of the clubhouse• Renovation and maintenance of the floodlight system• New synthetic grass courts 3 & 4• Practice wall• Midi court• Improved access facilities Renovation of the clubhouse and floodlighting system was completed in2005 and funded by the Club at a total cost of approximately 25,000.Building works were carried out by Thomas Murray & Son building con-tractors. Electrical work was performed by Clifton Electrical. In order to fund the cost of the proposed new facilities YLTC successfullyapplied for funding under the 2006 Sport Capital Programme (lotteryfunds) operated by the Department of Arts Sport and Tourism. Partialfunding was allocated for the provision of the new synthetic grass courts3 & 4. Additional funding was granted by Cork County Council.Following a competitive tendering process conducted by our consultant,David Kelly & Partnership, the contract was awarded to Tennis CourtIreland. Works started in February of this year and are now fullyplayable! The total cost of this project is approximately 100,000.The Club applied again under the 2007 Sports Capital Programme foradditional grants for Phase 2 works (practice wall, midi court and accessfacilities). Success again! A total of 40,000 has been allocated for this proj-ect with an estimated value of 65,000. Tenders for these works are cur-rently being sought. It is expected that works will be complete by the endof this year. These facilities will be of great benefit to juveniles. The midicourt (as the name suggests) is a reduced size court and is ideal for play-ers in the 8 through 12 years age bracket. By the end of this year the Facility Development Programme will be com-plete with a total investment of almost 200,000. Youghal lawn TennisClub is delighted to announce the recent major development of the clubwith now boasts four sand synthetic carpet courts thanks to all the Hardwork of the committee and in particular from Dave Clark. The club offers something for all the family we have a clubhouse with
