These men were ably assisted bythe wild geese, the boy scouts, the Gardai and the stewards. All ofthese volunteers combined, together with the walkie talkies sup-plied by David Keane, ensured that the safety and security meas-ures were first class. The registration was very professionallyorganised by Johnny Walsh and Liam O’Brien of BallycottonRunning Promotions. They also very kindly assisted in signage asdid Maurice and Jim Flanagan and Jenny and Paudie Lee.Dan McCarthy, chairman of the East Cork Board raised the gun at1.30pm and it was a real spectacle to watch close to 1,000 runnersand walkers taking to the streets of Youghal. The time-keepers at theend of the race were very efficient and the medical staff were ablyassisted by Patrick McCarthy and the ambulance staff, Youghalfire brigade and coastguard. Pupils from Pobalscoil Na Trionoidevery kindly organised the water stations and assisted in the good-ie bag packaging on Saturday.John Butler provided buses to bring participants back to the schoolwhere they were treated to some well deserved refreshmentsorganised by Eileen Reddy and friends. Mayor Olly Casey performed his finalduties as town mayor the day of the race and we would like tothank him for his invaluable assistance and to wish him the verybest in his retirement. There was more than enough parking for all the participants andspectators and this is due to the generosity of Michael Farrell andthe Youghal Rugby Club for the use of their parking facilities. The most unexpected and welcome entry of the day was that ofSonia O’Sullivan. Late Margaret [Madge] Aherne Youghal & Clashmore

The sun shone down in the tranquilcorner of the old cemetery inClashmore on Saturday May 20th -Madge Aherne had made her finaljourney home and all those presentwere witnessing the final chapter in aremarkable life which began way backin 1916. As the final prayers were said familyand friends lingered to chat and somewonderful memories of a lady whoselife has been a shining example andinspiration to all, were recalled. Born in Knockanaris Clashmore in1916 - like so many of her generation- life growing up in rural Ireland was

extremely difficult for Madge and her family, her near perfect mem-ory right up to the very end of her life could recall those early yearswith great clarity and detail. Going to school in Clashmore, the hard-ships endured because of the lack of basic essentials - running waterand electricity- transport- luxuries taken so much for granted today. She married her husband Patrick Aherne from nearby Creggs andtogether they had three children - however the death of their beauti-ful daughter Mary Margaret in 1947 at the age of just four years wasa devastating blow to the Aherne family. Madge never forgot thekindness and help of their wonderful Clashmore neighbours andfriends who supported them through those heartbreaking times. In 1961 Madge, Patrick and their children left their belovedClashmore for a chance of a better life across the Blackwater inYoughal Town, this joy was short lived however, as tragedy struckonce in again 1967 with the unexpected death of her husband Patrick. However it was her remarkable faith which gave Madge the courageand strength to carry on alone and raise a wonderful family. In finalmonths of Madge’s life she resided in the love and care of PeterAngela and staff of Youghal and district nursing home - as her longlife grew to a close, Madge had no doubt where she was going andknew she would reunited once again with those she loved who hadgone before her in their heavenly abode.Despite having lived the second half of life in Youghal she never losttouch with her native Clashmore, childhood friendships were veryspecial to Madge and she visited on a regular basis. Each week shekept in touch with all the happenings from across the bridge -with thelocal Dungarvan papers were the highlight of her week.Madge was first and foremost a family woman and she devoted herentire adult life to the love and care of her children, grandchildrenand great grandchildren. She supported and encouraged them in theircareers and past times - their interests were her interests. Her life andcourage has always been a great inspiration to them especially hergrandchildren - in the following reflection read by her grandsonKieran at her funeral mass which was celebrated by Fr BillBermingham at the Holy Family church in Youghal - summed upwhat this dearly loved lady ment to them "What is a Grandmother?"A grandmother is a remarkable woman. She’s a wonderful combination of warmth and kindnesslaughter and loveShe overlooks our faults, encourages our dreams, and praises our every success.A Grandmother has the wisdom of a teacher, and sincerity of a true friend, and the tenderness of a mother. She’s someone that we admire, respect and love very much.A grandmother will always have a cherished placein our memories and in our hearts

She’s someone for whom we want every happinessin return for the joy she always brings.

A Grandmother is all the dear and precious things in lifewhen she’s a Grandmother like you. That’s why we can’t help but love everything about you."Madge is survived by her son John, her daughter Biddy her son inlaw Bill, daughter in law Pat, her grandchildren, Kieran, Elaine,Derek, Sean, Mark, and Damien great grandchildren Fionn Darraghand Taylor her nieces relatives to whom we tender our deepest andheartfelt sympathy Madge may your spirit continue to inspire those you loved Madgeand may your gentle soul rest in everlasting peace. The late Helen CollinsGrange and EnglandHelen’s untimely death recently has left family and friends devastat-ed and deeply saddened. Born in Glenlickey Grange, Helen eldest ofthe Power sisters immigrated to England in the 1950’s to pursue acareer in nursing. There she met and married Clonakilty chief PatCollins, who was employed at the same hospital. Pats unexpecteddeath some 27 years ago was a devastating blow to Helen. Howevershe remained on in England and continued her nursing career untilher retirement. Over the years Helen always remained in close con-tact with her family here in West Waterford and she visited regularlyonce sometimes twice each year. Late last year Helen finally returnedhome to her family in Grange, where she was lovingly cared for byher sister Monica, Michael and all her family. Helen is survived byher sisters Monica O Connell [Grange], Easther Brown [Youghal]Breda Aherne Kereen her brothers in law nephews nieces relativesand friends to whom we tender our deepest and heart felt sympathy On Saturday evening May 2nd Helen’s removal took place to Grangechurch, on Sunday morning requiem mass was celebrated for thehappy repose of her soul, Helen was then taken on her final journeyto England where she will be laid to rest along side her late husbandPat last week. Youghal News.....June 11th 2009

By Christy Parker With all seven contesting members having been re-elected, therewas an air of relief, triumph and confidence about the final sittingof the 2004-9 Town Council. Business was strictly and enthusias-tically observed, as emphasised by the main issue of the night: Motion by Cllr Burke, supported by Mayor Casey: "that thisCouncil develops a Retail Strategy for Youghal to be incorporat-ed into the Youghal Town Development Plan 2009-15. A majorcomponent of this strategy should be the inclusion of a majorretail shopping complex on the Mill Road site identified for samein the Development Plan by Youghal Town Council and (ii)actively encourage developers to construct a major retail com-plex on the Mill Road site identified and zoned by the Council inthe Youghal Town Development Plan 2009-15." The Motion sparked a lively debate on An Bord Pleanala’s recentrejection of planning permission given to Galvin DevelopmentsLtd. for construction of a retail complex at Indian Point, MillRoad. Referring to the "shock waves" unleashed by the decision,Cllr Burke said Youghal ’had been looking forward to a modernshopping complex with a nationally known anchor tenant, thatwould have vastly improved its competitive position in relation toneighbouring towns.’ Hundreds of jobs would have been created inits wake but instead, ’Youghal money is ’supporting the Dungarvaneconomy particularly, including Dunne’s Stores,’ he said. The councillor launched a scathing attack on those who had "againprevented the advent of new business and enterprise" in Youghal. He said the "the objections were basically all about keeping com-petition out of town and preserving existing vested interests." Heclaimed that ’for so many years local business had jealously guard-ed its own little patch and objected to any development whichwould have enhanced the town’s economic profile." Cllr Burke called on the Council to "retrieve the situation" bydrawing up a Retail Strategy for Youghal, with terms of referenceto include a major retail complex at the Mill Road site, "which wasunanimously rezoned by the council members’ for such purpose. This strategy should be included in the Town Development Plan2009-15. He believed every effort should be made to encouragedevelopers to utilise the Mill Road site and hoped that GalvinDevelopments would make the necessary amendments and submita revised planning application. "Poor planning application"Amidst unanimous support for the motion, Cllr Murray said therewas an identified need for a Retail Strategy in both the PublicRealm and Town Development Plans and that it would encompassall areas, including Youghal’s periphery. She then expressed disap-pointment that the developers had submitted "such a poor planningapplication" and felt it "unfortunate that Dunnes Stores, which"was a carrot to sway support," had become synonymous with theapplication without having made any commitment to it. She hopedthat Galvin Developments, now that they owned the expensivelybought site would return with "a better plan" such as Youghaldeserved. She added that, "Dungarvan kept big developments outof its town until it got the best plan." Mayor Casey sparked a furious response from Cllr Murray whenhe suggested that if she hadn’t liked the plan, she should havevoted against it. Vociferously supported by Cllr Beecher, CllrMurray stood up to remind him that she had voted for the rezon-ing but that -as he knew- councillors had no input into the planningprocess thereafter. Town Manager Patricia Power concurred, say-ing the councillors had rezoned the land but the council executivehad issued the planning permission. "There is nothing we couldhave done to prevent the Bord Pleanala decision," she concluded. Cllr Burke would later correct Cllr Murray that part of GalvinDevelopments’s presentation to the council on seeking rezoningwas "a legally binding letter of intent from Dunne’s," subject to thedevelopment going ahead.Cllr Linehan Foley was ’disgusted" with An Bord Pleanala’s deci-sion. Like many Youghal people, she said, she shopped inDungarvan and Mahon Point, "because I have to" and she claimed

Youghal had continuously rejected large retail development for 40years.Cllr Savage said it would be very difficult for any developer toinvest in Indian Point given An Bord Pleanala’s views, especiallyits emphasis on town centre retailing. He agreed strongly that aRetail Strategy implemented into the Town Development wouldprove "very useful." Cllr Burke then observed that An BordPleanala had "used the Cork Retail Strategy, which was neverincorporated into Youghal’s Development Plan." "Flawed report"Town Clerk Liam Ryan added further fuel to the fires of ire whenhe asserted that "the inspector’s report was flawed in its descriptionof the site because it classed it as "’out of town.’" Yet when appealshad been made against the Tesco and Lidl (which is 50 yards fur-ther removed than Indian Point), An Bord Pleanala had classedthem as ’edge of centre.’ Mr. Ryan said, "It’s completely irrationaland smacks of the inspector having his mind made up in advance. He also believed that Youghal had been wrongly "used by vestednational interests as a test case for other towns."The Town Clerk provided further insight when he rubbished theBord’s consideration of intrusion on the graveyard wall as a tellingfactor, saying no relevant heritage organisations had appealed thedevelopment. . With the motion unanimously agreed, there was support for CllrMurray’s insistence that only consultants who specify in retailstrategy be employed for the purpose. Mayor Casey said this wasparticularly important given the unique, elongated nature of thetown.Cllr Burke summarised the Retail Strategy as possibly looking atYoughal’s capacity to accommodate extra shopping, consideringthe competitive positions of Tesco/Lidl area versus the town cen-tre, making recommendations as to the type of town centre retail-ing to compliment a Mill Road development, looking at the issueof vacant town centre shops and rents and analysing the suitabili-ty of ’town centre’ and ’edge of town centre’ sites. Town Foreman’s Report: Cllr Burke requested ramps at the Green, road markings at DunChorain, "in consultation with the residents," public lighting at theFair Field and a seat to be provided in the foyer of the post office, particularly necessitated for elderly people. He asked that thecouncil write to the HSE regarding visits by the school dentist whonow visits only twice weekly for emergency treatment, with "thedays of check-ups or prevention being better than cure seeminglygone." He also wondered if the builders bond could be invoked toget the Green Area at Oak Hill trimmed. A handrail on steps atRaheen Park needs repairing, road markings in the area needimproving and the grass on the bank from nos.15 to 20 need cut-ting. Nearby, the holes in the town walls are inadequately protect-ed and pose a serious danger of collapsing on children who mightdecide to access the vicinity. He voiced the need to clean the GaolSteps, repair the water channels on Golf Links Road behind theMarine bar, repair footpaths at 29 Sweetfield Estate and completepaths at Windmill Hill. Cllr McLellan asked if ramps could be provided atMcCurtainstown and at Parklands. Cllr Beecher asked that thefootpath from Aura to the Front Strand be completed. He said theentrance to Green Hole is very dangerous, with washed out sandcausing a 10ft drop. The litterbin at the tourist office needs to bebetter secured and a nearby tree stump requires uprooting. Hecalled for ball playing at Barry’s Lane to be stopped as it intimi-dates locals and pedestrians, while a tree hanging into Moonraker,Cork Hill, should be trimmed back. Cllr Barbara Murray asked that the De Valera Street car park becompleted and broken footpaths on various areas of North MainStreet be repaired. Cllr Linehan Foley said an abandoned car onKilcoran Road had smashed windows, stored rubbish and, beingadjacent to the ESB power station, posed a serious fire hazard. Cllr Revins said every estate is looking for speed ramps and said aTown Council by-law was needed to address ball playing at

Youghal News.....June 11th 2009

Cllr Revins said every estate is looking for speed ramps and said aTown Council by-law was needed to address ball playing at Barry’sLane. Mayor Casey asked that "a mighty pole" used for dryinghoses in the distant past be removed from the vicinity of the fire sta-tion. Cork County Council Items: Cllr Linehan Foley asked if Town Engineer Paul Murray for updateson the Greencloyne footpath and kerb problems and the landscapingto discourage the parking that obstructs emerging traffic oppositeCrowley’s garage. She reminded that a footpath at Dominic Collins’sPlace needed extending and said more bins are needed at Claycastle, along with signs denoting their presence. Cllr Revins asked that cutting at top of Kilcoran Park be undertak-en and large potholes at Knockaverry Estate be treated. He informedof an e-mail from the Quality Hotel complaining of the litteredRedbarn beach and asked whether the County Council planned toput bins there. Town engineer Paul Murray said Redbarn is beingpiloted as a Blue Flag beach, with no plans to install bins. Instead,a ’pack it in, pack it out’ program was being operated, whereby signshad been erected to encourage visitors to bring their waste home. "Idon’t think anyone understands that," interceded Cllrs Murray sup-ported by Cllr McLellan. "The Council should put up a simple signsuch as, ’Take your litter home.’ Cllr Savage, at his final council sitting, asked that grass margins atthe town entrances be trimmed. Cllr Burke asked if any sort ofpatching could be done in lieu of complaints about potholes, etc onthe back street, which are damaging cars. He wanted signs denotingYoughal as a Fair Trade town erected at town boundaries. "Lets tellthe world," he advised. He continued with "the usual list of brokenfootpaths" -Tallow Street, South Main Street, junction SouthAbbey/Strand Street before concluding with unfinished road sur-faces at the entrance to Summerdale Lawn. Cllr McLellan referredto an abandoned car at Kilcoran Road and said residents at GleanTuarigh had complained of rats being attracted by rubbish dumpedwithin. Cllr Beecher complained that it wasn’t acceptable that lifeguards areonly deployed at weekends during June and said a strong swimmerhad had so swim to the rescue of someone in a canoe recently. TownClerk Liam Ryan Clerk explained that current finances only allowedfor the present rota. "Funding comes 50% each from the Town andCounty councils," he said. "The level is exactly the same as previ-ous years, with daily lifeguards only in July and August, but ifmoney was allotted at December’s budget meeting, it wouldchange." Cllr Beecher further asked that ponding (flooding) both atStore Street and the second last house in Kilcoran Park be resolved(although he didn’t request a lifeguard!) Cllr Murray sought repairs to the footpath outside Con Keogh’swould be done, having first raised the matter last April. She won-dered when road markings, a stop sign and a crash barrier would beinstalled at Ardan na Mara and asked that sand be cleared from allwheelchair ramps at the beaches. She suggested some flexibility inthe County Council’s work schedules for litter to be picked from thebeach on weekends. "Perhaps a shift switch by some workers frommidweek to weekends?" she suggested. Mayor Casey asked that ponding outside Nagle House be resolved, especially as the premises was just painted. He asked that a ’NoOvertaking’ sign be erected at the Mall, as cars often have to stray alittle to the left before turning right to park perpendicular to the path."Unfortunately, drivers tend to overtake at that moment and some-one is going to get killed," he warned. Having listened to the list of concerns, Town Engineer Paul Murrayadded that litterbins at Redbarn would attract vermin. He said he iswaiting for a price to be submitted from the contractor before autho-rising completion of the path from Aura. He agreed the back streetis in bad shape but argued that in the coming years it will be dug upfor the new main drainage scheme -though he failed to impress hislisteners! He also said his outdoor staff are dealing with a series ofwater leaks in town, which once resolved, would allow attention tobe turned to road, including the dip outside the court house. Cllr Beecher again complained about obnoxious odours emanating

at weekends from Foxhole. Mayor Casey said the EPA is monitor-ing the area and a report would be forthcoming. Manager’s Orders (and Mayor’s tributes!): Mayor Casey took the opportunity to convey how honoured he hadfelt to serve the community over the past 15 years. "It was -and stillis - in my blood," he said, "but having started work at 15 ‰ and nowbeing 67, there comes a time to stand down and take a break."Amidst much good wishes, Cllr Linehan Foley recalled the mayoraffording her guidance and respect when she was first elected in1999. "It was an honour to work with you and I’ll miss you," sheproclaimed. She then asked that the media clarify a previous, seem-ingly disparaging incident in which she had alluded, caustically, to’the face on the Mayor’ during a strongly heated debate. "We bothknow it was nothing personal" she said, "but I got some stick for iton doorsteps." Done. Cllr Burke thanked the Mayor for a "wonderful 15 years." He saidhe had given "half a century to Youghal" from a teenager in YoughalGasworks to 40 years as water curator, 21 as fire brigade stationofficer and then councillor, with three terms as mayor. "You are aperson of principle, integrity, honour, honesty, dedication and com-mitment," he said to his retiring friend, followed by spontaneousapplause. Mall Arts Centre:The council unanimously agreed to transfer running of the Mall ArtsCentre to Hatherton Ltd., which trades as Youghal EnterpriseCentre. The agreement followed a brief appraisal from the TownClerk in which he referred to "enormous difficulties" imposed bythe present financial climate, in running the centre from the TownCouncil offices. He referred to such aspects as staffing and fundingbeing difficult and believed the transfer could bring a financialviewpoint to bear, with a more imaginative, less restrainedapproach. The initiative would be executed "immediately," headded. Correspondence:Cllr Revins expressed reservations in providing East Cork Tourismwith a requested 7,000 fee. "We don’t even get invited to theirannual showcase and get very little information from them," he said. The Town Clerk’s suggestion that East Cork Tourism be invited tomake a presentation as to their strategy for Youghal prior to beinggiven any money, was accepted. Congratulations: Cllr Sammy Revins congratulated Youghal United for winning theBeamish Stout Senior Cup recently. Youghal News.....June 11th 2009

By Michael TowomeyThe people of Youghal elected a new Town Council last Friday.Six of those elected in 2004 were re-elected at Saturday’s count.Fanna FÆil’s Sammy Revins and Mary Linehan-Foley, Fine Gael’sMichael Beecher and Barbara Murray, Sinn FØin’s SandraMcLellan and Green Party candidate, Liam Burke kept hold oftheir seats. Sinn FØin’s Michelle Hennessy, who had been co-optedto the outgoing council, was elected by the people for the first timeas was Labour’s Donie Daly and Fanna FÆil’s Eoin Coyne. The qouta for election was 342 votes from a total of 3,418 votes

cast after 41 votes were deemed invalid. There were few surprises given the low number of candidates, just12 in all. The 2004 local elections saw 23 hopefuls contest seats inwhat was oftentimes a contentious and controversial affair.Though the 2009 Local Elections were much more understatedand low key, there were a number of significant factors that willmake it memorable for candidates, their families and the voters. For much of the day the Town Hall resembled a bookies with bod-ies busily counting, adding subtracting, surmising, predicting, cheering and sighing. C.R.Y. sat track-side interviewing those whohad just caught their breath having past the winning post. Therewas some light humour prior to the first count as the Town Clerkexplained reasons for the relegation of 41 invalid votes. Theseincluded as many as four ticks or Xs being placed in candidatesboxes and some without any mark at all. Heads shook in dismay. At the first count there is little doubt that Eoin Coyne grabbed theheadlines. Eoin belied his age, storming to third place with 414

votes. Sandra McLellan toppedthe poll with a very impressive524 votes, while MichaelBeecher maintained his popularstanding with 508 votes. Theother headline maker was DonieDaly, the first Labour councillorsince 1985, elected with 383 firstcount votes. As lunchtime drifted into after-noon at the Town Hall’s Mall ArtsCentre it became as clear as theglass annex that at least 8 of theseats would be secured. BothBilly Murphy (Independent- 29)and Dave Daly (Fanna FÆil - 84)found themselves needing exces-sive extra votes to remain in thechase. Fine Gael’s Robert Sweetnam and Sinn FØin’s MichelleHennessey were neck and neck with a handful of votes separatingthem. By the second count a staggering 114 of Sandra McLellan’s trans-fers moved the seat a step closer to Cllr. Hennessey and broughtwhoops and cheers from her supporters. Robert Sweetnam now needed an equally effective transfer of the166 surplus votes from Michael Beecher. However, BarbaraMurray was favourite to take the majority of those, and she did.Cllr. Murray secured 50 transfers with Robert’s fate sealed with 33extra votes leaving him adrift of Cllr. Hennessey. Experiencedcampaigners, Liam Burke, Mary Linehan-Foley, Sammy Revinsand Barbara Murray would not allow congratulations but their qui-etly observed confidence could not be denied. Indeed, Cllr. Revins

Revins outshone Mystic Meg with a prediction of 300 votes afterthe first count, he secured 294. Cllr. Linehan-Foley remarked onher Dad’s old adage that polling at a consistant level was far moredesirable than topping it one year and failing the next, while a dig-nified Cllr. Burke was soothed by the security of the votes hewould and had gained from his colleague and friend, Ollie Casey.By count three the rain turned from light to heavy. Inside the oldballroom Cllr. Murray was elected with the fate of the otherssigned, sealed and awating formal delivery. Councillors and candidates were equally gracious in victory and

defeat. All remained to watch, listen and congratulate. Somelooked exhausted by weeks ofcampaigning and the strain of themathematical twists and turns.Rounds of applause were meas-ured in appreciation for thosewho had made democracy viableby putting their names forward.No-one was forgotten, in particu-lar, the absent Billy Murphy andthe unelected Robert Sweetnamand Dave Daly. Had they notbeen brave enough to literally becounted, there would have benno election. Poll topper, Sandra McLellan

puffed with relief. I’m delighted. Asked if she was looking for-ward to a second term, she replied. I’m more confident going intoit. I felt the campaign went well and the feedback was very good. She wasted no time in pointing out what she hoped to achieve. We must stick at job creation and get the enterprise centre forYoughal to open workshops. We could get five more businesses, she said. She concluded that she had ’learned a lot’ and her wishwas to ’work for everyone across the board’. Fellow Sinn FØinCllr., Michelle Hennessy said she was ’glad to have a second

chance’. I think it’s harder to hold a seat and it feels way better tobe actually elected. I feel I have way more confidence this timeround with two and a half years experience. I’m delighted forSandra and the Sinn FØin votes transferred well, she said. Confidence was the buzz word for those re-elected and Cllr.Beecher echoed the sentiment. I know people have confidence inme now but there is always room for improvement. I’d like tothank the people because this is the highest honour. I’m thrilledand it shows local democracy is strong in Youghal, he said. The two new Cllrs., Eoin Coyne and Donie Daly had all the enthu-siasm of fresh blood. Cllr. Coyne was quick to throw off the cate-gory of ’youth candidate’. My main ambition is to represent all ofYoughal to the best of my ability. I don’t want to be labeled as justthe young voice for Youghal. I want to represent young and old.Asked how he felt about the campaign he was honest in his assess-ment. I found it daunting at first because of the way people feelabout Fanna FÆil at the moment. I feel the work I put in paid off.I was happy with the campaign. There was a mixed reaction fromdoor to door but I think people are more interested in local issues.Meanwhile, Donie Daly’s pride was evident at finally securing aseat for Labour and wants to focus on realistic goals. I’m delight-ed for all the hard work everyone put in since April. There are out-standing issues such as tourism and getting back the blue flags forYoughal and we will continue to lobby for the railway line to bereopened, he said. Cllr. Daly then hoped to build on Labour’sreturn to local politics. We want to build a nucleus for Labourhere in Youghal with intelligent, articulate individuals and thefeedback on the campaign was brilliant. People are genuinelylooking for change. There is change and yet the Youghal electorate ignored the tsuna-mi that swept the country and threatened to engulf Fanna FÆil.Swimming against the tide is a past-time in Youghal and the elec-torate chose to keep Fanna FÆil in a majority on the YoughalCouncil. It’s claimed that local politics is about personalities andlocal issues and Eoin Coyne’s elevation is testament to that. Cllr.Burke welcomed such a fresh impetus to the often mundane, dusty

Burke welcomed such a fresh impetus to the often mundane, dustychamber that seems to grind slowly on the rusted rails of the Irishpolitical system. It will be different but it’s great to see theCouncil injected with new blood and fresh ideas. He stated thathe would continue his work with local heritage. Money is stillcoming into heritage despite the current climate and the new her-itage directional signs will be rolled out to the historic core of thetown shortly. He added that he was ’honoured and privileged’ tobe re-elected. The vote I got was a combination of myself andOllie Casey. It was a great pleasure to work with him for fifteenyears. It was a strong alliance and that alliance got me elected. For Fanna FÆil Cllrs., Linehan-Foley and Revins it was a time toreflect on how the government had left them with pieces to pickup. Asked how she had avoided becoming a victim to protest vot-ing against her party she said it would have been ’unfair to hit localrepresentatives’. The local elections are contested by personali-ties. I’ve worked hard for five years. I’m thrilled to be back in andI thank everyone who voted for me. There’s a lot of issues. Wewant to get Dunnes back up and running, we want the new libraryin the County Council premises that they bought and we will con-tinue to fight for a marina for Youghal, she said. Former Cllr.,Ollie Casey was again remembered by Cllr. Linehan-Foley. Hewill be missed, he was like a father figure to me and was a greathelp to me when my Dad passed away. Meanwhile, Cllr. Revinsrevealed that this would be his last term in office. I’ll step downafter this term. I’ll have given twenty years by that time. So whatwould he wish to see realised for Youghal when that day comes.I’d love to see employment come back to Youghal, even a fewsmall industries and I still would like to see a shopping outlet, hesaid. The campaign had been difficult but Sammy had counted onthe goodwill of his personal vote. I canvassed on my own asSammy Revins and now I will continue to work as hard as I haveever done for the town. Party politics wise the only change to the line up is the new Labourseat. Fine Gael’s Cllr. Murray is relieved to continue the strongrepresentation of her party. It’s a relief to be elected. There wasno surprises locally that the seven would make it. She also wel-comed the new Cllrs. They’ll be a breath of fresh air. The firstterm is all about settling in and it’s the biggest learning cure. I nowhave five years under my belt and have forged relationships in alot of departments. The campaign was hard. Politics is a toughgame and you need all the help you can get.By 8pm the numbers were added up, the party was over. Thosewho celebrated into the night would have had an uneasy sleep. Thework and the often thankless tasks, frustrations and disappoint-ments start today. The Council staff excelled in the operation ofthe count, their tireless efforts greatly appreciated. Town Clerk,Liam Ryan remained, as ever, coolness personified and his dili-gence during the counts made the process seamless. His clear andconcise explanations brought both clarity and understanding to thewaiting crowd. Appreciation was shown with a round of applauseas the 2009 election ended.

Report: Anthony Horgan.Munster Senior League Beamish Cup Final @ Turner’s Cross.Youghal United 2 1 St.Mary’s.Ken Dempsey, Michael John HennessySunday 31st May 2009 will go down as one of the most successfuldays in the clubs history as the senior team recorded an unbelievablevictory over fancied side St.Mary’s of Kilcully in Cork city. For achange I am not going to do the customary minute by minute matchreport, instead I am going to talk about the occasion itself. As you cansee from the league standings below there is a huge difference inleague placings between the two sides. Youghal United went into thisgame as total underdogs and to be honest we didn’t really expect to betaking part but for another great win against Douglas Hall in the semi-final.The build up to this tie had St. Mary’s winning this final by a distanceonly for Youghal to throw a spanner in the works and stun the cityteam with two first half goals by team captain on the day KenDempsey and what was to be the winner by Michael John Hennessy.Youghal were under the cosh for the whole entire second half only forsome fine defending by Paul Kelly, Anthony Kelly , Ken Dempsey andSean Kenneally and of course super goal keeping by David Kearnswith a fine penalty save for good measure. Deservedly so DavidKearns went on to pick up the man of the match award which was laterpresented to him at Bertie’s bar! The Beamish cup is in circulation since 1937 and it was the first timea MSL side outside of the city boundaries won this cup. It is normallycontested and won by premier division sides so for Youghal United towin it from division 2 is unheard of. A great credit is due to the man-agement team of Mick Durkin and Liam Ryan, the squad of DavidKearns, Paul Kelly, Anthony Kelly, Ken Dempsey, Sean Kenneally,Chris Hennessy, Alan Hennessy, Darren Hennessy, Brendan O’Sullivan, Shane Ryan and Michael John Hennessy. Subs used RobertCronin, Steven Fraser and Mossie Clohesy. This was truly a squad performance on the day as the lads that wereintroduced played a huge part in the final moments. It is a day toremember for many a year as Youghal United beat a well fancied sideunder souring temperatures at Turners Cross and of course cheered onall the way by the huge support who travelled on the day. All in all aterrific season for the club with the seniors gaining promotion to divi-sion 1 and winning the Munster senior cup. Report: Richard SheehanUnder 16 Girls Win League Div1 Title. Youghal Utd 4 - 2 Douglas Hall (26/5/09)The Youghal girls lined out against Douglas Hall in a must win game,on the final day of the under 16 Cork schoolgirls league. Youghal need-ed a win to clinch their very first league title. Tension was high justbefore kickoff, with a large turnout supporting the Youghal girls.Youghal started off the better and had most of the play for the first 10minutes or so, but it was the Douglas Hall girls that got the break-through when a ball over the Youghal defence was taken by LauraShine of Douglas Hall, to finish to the top right hand corner of theYoughal goal. This had the effect of settling the Youghal team and theystarted to play some good football, but were aware of the threat fromanother breakaway goal. It was only a matter of time before theYoughal goal came, this came from the boot of Gemma Lyons whoscored the equaliser and sent Youghal on their first step towards theLeague title. Play continued with some good football from both sidesand Youghal got a penalty when one of the Douglas Hall girls handledthe ball inside the box. Up stepped Lisa O’Sullivan and she calmly putthe ball past the Hall keeper to make it 2 to 1 at half time. The second half started with the Youghal girls sensing they could go

on and win it, but the Douglas girls had other ideas, and made themfight for it all the way. Youghal were the next to score when LisaO’Sullivan scrambled the ball past the Douglas Hall keeper to givethem a comfortable 3 to 1 lead. This comfort zone lasted for all of 3minutes when a good move from Douglas Hall saw Laura Shine scorefor the visitors, and raise the tension again. Both teams battled for thenext score and Youghal were rewarded when Lisa O’Sullivan got thebreakthrough to make it 4 to 2.With about 8 minutes left Douglas hall made a break through the nowtiring Youghal defence to go one on one with Shannon Crowley in theYoughal goal, where Shannon made the save of the day to deny thescore, and she was called into action almost immediately when theclearance came straight back in, and looked like a sure score butShannon Crowley somehow got her hands to the shot and turned theball past the Youghal post. At this stage both teams had given their alland it was the Youghal girls that hung on, with the aid of their support-ers, to clinch victory and their first schoolgirls league title for the club.Well done to all the Youghal girl’s, and well done to Douglas Hall fora thrilling final game to the season. INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 30/05/2009 CAR-RIGTOHILL YOUGHAL 0-13 V DELANEYS 1-6What was arguably the biggest football game the Club haveplayed in for many Years was played in Carrigtohill on SaturdayEvening 30th May. Losing would have meant a relegation playoffwhich could have left the club playing East Cork Junior Footballnext Year. Thankfully however the lads put in superb performanceagainst Delaneys to emerge victorious. Minus a few Key playersthrough injury and other commitments Youghal took to the Fieldwith some confidence but also a little doubt as to whether theycould overcome the Delaney challenge with so many playersunavailable. To their credit the players who filled in were superbon the night. Youghal opened with a superb point inside thirty sec-onds from Paul Kelly who ran the length of the field to get on theend of a ball and duly put it over. Youghal struggled a bit after thiswith Delaneys dominating the breaking ball around the middlewhich put pressure on our rear guard and eventually led to theGoal. Eoin Coleman went to midfield to see if he could pick upsome breaking ball and this move proved to be the key to swing-ing the tie in Youghal’s favour. Eoin had arguably his best gamefor Yearsshowing all his experience in picking up loose ball, breaking the tackle and laying it off. This allowed Damien Ring todictate the play from the middle and Youghal were dominant inthis sector for the remainder of the contest. Youghals full back lineof Michael Cronin, Aaron kenny and Paul Kelly were solidthroughout as were the half back line, and up front Youghal tor-tured their oponents with Stephen Kelly running straight at themwith every ball and chipping in with 3 points. In fact all three ofthe half forwards scored three points with Barry McCarthy and theimpressive Nigel Roche having the same total. The score of thegame came from Robert Cronin late in the second half who col-lected the ball on the 45 beat two players to head towords the 21and from an acute angle curled a superb ball over the bar to put thetie to bed. Onwards and upwards for the Boys after this perform-ance and lets hope they can continue in this good form for the restof the season. Team : P. Mackey, M. Cronin, A. Kenny, P. Kelly 0-1, R. The bar was thenraised to 3.40 metres and came

so close on her first attempt when over the bar she caught it on theway down. She also came very close on her second attempt, whenshe caught it on the way up and again on her third attempt. Herprogression this year in Pole Vault has been huge considering thiscompetition last year shecleared 2.70 metres.Emer Kelly competing in herfirst All Ireland schools Finalput in a great performance totake the Silver medal. Emeropened the competition at 1.70metres and was clear on her firstattempt; she also cleared 1.90metres and 2.10 metres on herfirst attempt and was unlucky at2.20. Her first time clearance at2.10 metres secured her theSilver medal for Emer and shebeat the girl from Augustine’s inAbbeyside who had taken theSilver medal in the MunsterSchools Championships two weeks previously.A unique achievement for the school and the girls as it is the firsttime ever that they have taken first and second in an All IrelandSchools Final.Adam Aherne was competing in the All Ireland SchoolsChampionships for the first time in the Triple Jump.Adam jumped consistently through out the competition and fin-ished in 7th place with a jump of 10.49 metres. YOUGHAL HANDBALL &RACQUETBALL NEWS

Keith Gallogley brings back top medal from Kilkenny OpenOver the weekend of May 23rd/24th Wayne Fitzgerald and KeithGallogley headed off to compete in the last open competition ofthe season, the Kilkenny Open. There was a large entry to thecompetition with players coming from as far away as Belfast tocompete! Wayne was first up in the singles and after a good starthe eventually lost out on a 2-1 score and took an early exit in thefirst round. The pressure was on Keith to keep the interest in thesingles for the day which he did with true grit and determination. On the Saturday Keith played three rounds to qualify for the semi-final on the Sunday. Sunday arrived and Keith came fresh withthe smell of victory in the air. He won through the semi and in thefinal came through on a 2-1 scoreline to take the Kilkenny OpenMens Novice Singles trophy back to Youghal. Our congratula-tions to Keith as he is the first Youghal player to bring an openwinners medal back to the club, hopefully he will bring his forminto next season and bring a few more medals back!! Also overthe weekend in Kilkenny, Wayne & Keith entered the doublescompetition. They had a good run here and progressed to the semi-final where they were knocked out by eventual winners from thehome town.Youghal Open Competition; The local competiton reached thequarter final stages and on last Thursday, June 4th, we had twomatches to progress. First up were Barry Goggin and KeithGallogley. Both players were coming into this game in differentforms. Keith was fresh from his big win in Kilkenny and Barrywas recovering from a ladder loss to Dwaine O’Shea. Keith andBarry are two of the top players in the club at the moment so wewere in for a great game. Barry won the toss and elected to serve. He started very strong and earned a 9-0 lead in the first game.Keith settled and started to knock up some consecutive scores toget back to 12-12. Barry was back in scoring and at 14-12 lookedlike he had the first game taken. However a unsettled serveallowed Keith a strong return and he was back in to serve. Hepulled the score back to 14-14 and was also looking like he wouldtake the first game. Both players played like their lives dependedon it and were in and out several times on 14-14. Eventually itwas Barry that took the first game. Once the second game stratedKeith was on a mission to win and in a reverse of the first game itwas Keith that took the early lead and went 7-0 up. Barry workedhard and both players were tied on 12-12 again. At this stageBarry had put some consecutive scores together and came throughto take the second game and book his place in the semi-final on a2-0 scoreline. Next up were Jody Cooper and Michael Pearce. These players have been drawn on opposite sides of draws all sea-son and have both progressed to similiar stages without actuallyplaying each other so this was going to be an interesting match. The first game started with Jody taking control by knocking upconsecutive scores when in to serve. Throughout the gameMichael was actually in serving alot but failed to get those impor-tant consecutive scores that make all the difference. In the end itwas Jody that came through to book his slot in the semi-final also.On Thursday, 11th June we will be holding the semi-finals as fol-lows: Wayne Fitzgerald vs. Barry Goggin; Brian Fitzgerald vs.Jody Cooper. Games start at 7:15 and all those that had supportedand played to date are asked to come up and support.Racquetball Ladder; We have a new leader on the ladder. Afterthree weeks at the top Wayne Fitzgerald has been knocked off andKeith Gallogley has taken the number 1 position. Rankings are asfollows: 1. Keith Gallogley; 2. Andrew Gallogley; 3. WayneFitzgerald; 4. Dwaine O’Shea; 5. Barry GogginThere should be plenty of activity in the coming weeks as playerscontinue to work on their rankings.Blackwater Cup; In preparation for the Blackwater Cup localclub Fermoy will be coming down on Wednesday, 10th June forsome practice games. Anyone around is asked to come up towatch and make our visitors welcome. Games begin at 7pm.

COMMUNITY GAMESU12 SoccerOn May 12th last our under 12’s travelled to Abbeyside to take onthe well fancied Abbeyside team. While we started nervously, some excellent saves from Ben Murphy and spirited defence byDaniel Sliney, Padraig Roche, Tom Roche, Liam Hurley andMichael Tobin kept the game scoreless. Midway through the firsthalf as our midfielders consisting of Edward Hynes, Edward ONeill, Robbie Grary and Cathal O Neill began to take control, wehad some chances to take the lead, but good saves from theAbbeyside keeper from Sean Faul and Billy Hynes kept the gamescoreless. However, approaching half time two excellent strikesfrom the Abbeyside front men gave our keeper Ben Murphy nochance and sent Abbeyside in at half time with a two goal lead. In the second half while we had a lot of possession and someexcellent skill from John Walsh, Dylan Hogan, and TiernanMcKeown, we failed to take our scoring opportunities, unlikeAbbeyside who scored 2 opportunistic goals giving them a 4 goallead heading into the final quarter.Despite the scoreline, to their credit the lads battled on and wererewarded when Sean Faul was taken down in the penalty areawhich Cathal O Neill converted with an excellent strike to bottonleft hand corner. Abbeyside added another goal just before fulltime. This was an excellent spirited performance by our lads con-sidering that the Abbeyside team consisted of players from theBallinroad Soccer Club who play soccer on a weekly basis.Team: Ben Murphy, Liam Hurley, Daniel Sliney, Michael Tobin,Tom Roche, Padraig Roche, Edward Hynes, Edward O Neill,Robbie Geary, Cathal O Neill, Sean Faul, Billy Hynes, DylanHogan, Tiernan McKeown, John Walsh. Swimming The swimming Community Games County Finals

took place on Thursday 21st May at Splashworld, Tramore. Anumber of children from our club braved the waters and compet-ed in a most enjoyable and eagerly contested line-up of events. These finals were well attended with boys and girls fromStradbally, Tramore, An Gaeltacht, Clonea and Fenor, some hav-ing acquired an impressive ability to compete through local swimclubs.
