NIBS Releases 2013 Annual ReportThe National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) and its members help shapethe built environment of America using a balanced approach to address some ofthe most intriguing and perplexing problems facing the U.S.'s housing andbuilding community. The Institute's recently released Annual Report provides anoverview of what its members, volunteers, and staff have accomplished duringthe past year. Regarding educational facilities, the report notes that protectingour children in a safe school environment is a priority to securing our future.NIBS is working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate to develop an Integrated RapidVisual Screening (IRVS) Process to Assess and Design Safe Schools. Usingtechnology initially develop to assess the risk of buildings, mass transit stations,and tunnels to terrorist attacks, the Institute assisted DHS S&T in 2013 to adaptthe IRVS assessment tool to evaluate school facilities, identify vulnerabilities,and focus resources on achieving a greater level of safety within educationalfacilities without increasing operational costs. Knox College Transitions to Renewable EnergyAfter the college's energy contract ended and the Presidential Task Force onSustainability suggested renewable energy be the focus of a new contract, KnoxCollege signed a new oneyear agreement that will provide it with 100 percentrenewable energy. The transitions made on campus were minimal. The onlydifference in the new contract is that the company Knox pays for its energy nowobtains that energy from renewable sources. Learn more.
U.S. Cement Consumption Growth Continues in 2014Weather, other factors caused weakening, but fundamentals in place forrecoveryAlthough recent economic indicators point to a tempering of the U.S. economy,the Portland Cement Association(PCA) is maintaining its forecastfor steady growth in constructionand cement consumption duringthe next five years. A recentPCA forecast indicates a 7.9percent increase in cementconsumption for 2014, almostdouble from the 4.5 increase in2013. The industry expects to
see doubledigit growth in 2015 and 2016, with 10 percent growth both years.Learn more.
