What can I say? It is has been a wild ride serving the best District in the state and the hardest working servant hearts anyone could ever meet. Humbling, that is the word I would use to describe our membership as I saw the devotion to the causes we offer, the selfless hours offered meeting the needs, and genuine love of mankind. I am thankful for this opportunity as your Governor and to have served along side of you this year. We started this year with a thought; “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has”. It was that thought that spurned renewed passion in what we do. We do make a difference and I bet if you pulled together the thousands of people that we have helped in some way this year, you could fill Hampton Coliseum with grateful people who lives have been enriched, by the power of our service. Yes, a small group can make a difference and I am proud to be known as a member of Lions Clubs International. This year has also been about changing that way we think and do things as a club and a district. Business as usual will not allow us to move forward. W. Edwards Deming is quoted in saying “It is not necessary to change. Survival is not necessary.” No, our survival is not necessary but the world; your community would be a darker place with out us. Change is not necessary but our survival depends on it. The world is changing. How people see volunteering is changing. It is not an obligatory thing anymore. We believe that the projects and programs we have placed in the forefront have helped us with the slow change towards bringing back the passion to actively serve. As we continue to become passionate in our service, others outside of Lions will see our drive, our passion and find it attractive enough to want to pursue a working and fellowship relation with us. Helping people; it is what we do. It is my wish that as we transition seamlessly into the new Lion’s year, we do not forget the passion behind our “move to grow “theme and continue to believe that what we offer our communities leave lasting impressions and we do change lives for the better. The new initiative “Pedia vision” is now confirmed and we have a new Treasurers Line item for your clubs to donate to. We hope you will. The power of screening children for vision, even as young as 6 months old WILL impact many. It is our goal to have one of these progressive screening tools available at our November Fall Conference in Williamsburg. We hope to offer training and introduce to you a new powerful tool that will open many opportunities to help your local children to be vision ready before they enter their school years. We feel it is worth our effort to help make this equipment available for you to use. More to come on this. Congratulations are in order for Lion Donna Weiler DGE, Lion Alton Miller 1st VDGE and Lion Stan Furman 2nd VDGE on their campaign and election at the 2009-2010 Virginia State Convention in Roanoke. I look forward to working with them as they lead our great District. Let them know that you appreciate the time, resources and effort that they will use to do this. It is not an easy task but it can be rewarding. They deserve our support and respect. I thank them for stepping forward. I hope to see all of you June 5th for the District Picnic and June 9th for our Last District meeting for 2009- 2010. I have had a blast, wonderful memories, and formed lasting friendships. Governor Alton Miller

Fellow Lions, Lionism is a great thing, a glorious cause. “WE SERVE”. So simple, yet so much on point.“We Serve” those less fortunate. “We Serve” those in need. “We Serve” around the corner and around the world. “We Serve” those who are the same and those who are different.“We Serve” because it is the right thing to do, because it is what good people do. And Lions are good people. PDG Doug

We just returned from the Virginia Lions State Convention held in Roanoke, VA. Lion Hauser and I had a wonderful time visiting with the Lions in MD24. I want to thank each and every Lion for the trust they have bestowed upon me as their District Governor Elect. I pledge to you that I will give it my all during the upcoming Lions year. I want to thank DG Gary for his guidance, trust and his confidence in my abilities. We have had a wonderful journey and it is not over yet. Lion Gary has been appointed as our 2010-2011 Council Chairman. He will continue to work hard in our District and in the Multiple District mentoring the 2010-2011 Council of Governors. He will also be serving as my Cabinet Secretary. Our District is fortunate to have a Lion with such passion for serving others. Mark your calendar for June 9th as we celebrate his year as our District Governor. I want to congratulate Lion Alton Miller and Lion J. Stanley Furman in their election to the position of 1st and 2nd Vice District Governor. I look forward to serving with them during the upcoming year. We are blessed to have such an experienced and knowledgeable District Team. I want to thank those Lions who have stepped forward and will be serving on my Governors cabinet. We are going to have a great ride as we set sail on the four ships of Lionism; Membership, Leadership, Partnership and Fellowship. Thank you all, Lion Donna

Lions Year 2009-2010 has been a great year with an innovative approach to old ideas.Led by our District Governor Lion Gary Rapier, our membership has increased with new vitality infused into older Lions Clubs (Aragona-Pembroke Lions Club), into new Lions Clubs (Norfolk Middle Town Lions Club), into new Lions Clubs being formed (Grassfield Lions Club), into Lions Clubs being reformed (Exmore-Belle Haven Lions Club) and into Lions Clubs that were going to be dissolved. DG Lion Gary has spearheaded the effort to actually have the Lions Clubs of Lions District 24-D live the Lions Motto, “WE SERVE” by instituting service projects justifying their existence. 1st District Governor Lion Donna Weiler was there by DG Lion Gary’s side promoting Lionism. Let have a great Lions Year 2010-2011 and expand on the successes of this successful year.

L A M P A N D R A M U P D A T E 2 0 1 0 This has been a very busy time for the District with LAMP events and screenings. It has been wonderful to witness the enthusiasm among our Clubs and see the results in the patients we serve. Many thanks to DG Gary for his enthusiasm in promoting screenings with the Sight & Hearing Van and the LAMP trailer for complete exams and dispensing glasses. In one combined event with the Mathews Lions Club, both units were present making for a very efficient use of our resources. I hope that we can have more events like this as it reproduces what Lions do at the RAM Project in Wise, VA. RAM: July 23 – 25, 2010 is just around the corner! Our 11th RAM project is already fully planned, at the same Fair Grounds in Wise, Virginia. This a wonderful chance to see what Lions can do when we come together from all over the state. It fully shows how many can do more than the few. There has been a question as to housing. Lion Judy Miller, the 24F RAM Chair sent the following lodging information. Hotels: Inn at Norton 276-679-7000 Norton Super Eight 276-679-0893 Norton Holiday Inn 276-679-6655 Norton Days Inn 276-679-5340 Norton Best Western 276-328-3500 Wise Comfort Inn 276-523- 5911 Big Stone Gap Camping facilities: Country Inn and Camping 276-523-0374 Big Stone Gap Whispering Pines at Camp Bethel 800-359-3409 or 276-328-6876 Wise There are an additional 15 Campsites for RV’s/Camping at the Fair Grounds in Wise where RAM takes place. If anyone is interested in one of these RAM sites, let Lion Judy Miller know ASAP and she will make a reservation. There is no charge for these spots. If anyone has any questions, concerning the above information, please call Lion Judy, 24F RAM Chair, at 276-679-0031 or 276-679-3730 or e-mail her at [email protected]. Any Lions, or friends of Lions, interested in the RAM project this summer can contact me at [email protected] or at 804-435-0341 or Lion Nancy Cranford at [email protected] to sign up for a life altering community service project.

LAMP: The Phoebus Lions, Mathews Lions, Surry Lions, Deep Creek Lions, Aragona-Pembroke Lions, and Norfolk Middletown Lions have all had successful LAMP events. Projects are scheduled with Franklin Lions, Warwick Lions, Surry Lions, Norfolk Middletown Lions and Onancock Lions between now and the end of this Lions’ Year. Any Club still wanting to schedule a LAMP event in their community, please contact me as there are still many open days. Using a Community screening with eye exams and free eyeglasses is a great way to show-case your Club and attract new members, especially if you invite eye-care providers to help, then thank them at a club meeting following the event. Schedule a LAMP event in your community NOW. Call or e-mail me to schedule. Submitted by Lion Hauser Weiler, LAMP/RAM Chair 24D

HOTV Child Screening – Richmond County Lions Submitted by Lion Donna Weiler 1st VDG.

On May 3, 2010 the Richmond County Lions club conducted a HOTV child screening at the YMCA preschool in Warsaw, VA. 1st VDG Donna Weiler, Club President Lion Jinny Jenkins, and club members Lion Bernice McElroy and Lion Cary Kranes screened eighteen preschoolers.

One child, pictured above with Lion Jinny Jenkins, was discovered to have amblyopia. His vision in his right eye was 20/20 and 20/125 in his left. His parents were grateful and told us that he had an appointment the next day with his pediatrician. The child loves to play sports and by early detection we did make a difference. Pictured right is Lion Cary Kranes testing children using the stereoposis test.

AAA SSSpppeeeccciiiaaalll MMMooottthhheeerrr’’’sss DDDaaayyy The Richmond Race for the Cure was started in 1998 by Jennifer Norvell Saunders, in memory of her mother, Joanne. Joanne lost her battle with breast cancer after a second reoccurrence of her disease. To honor her mother's life, Jennifer, her family, and friends planned the first Richmond Race for the Cure® with the hope that fifty people would join them. To Jennifer's surprise over 1,200 gathered at the starting line that Mother's Day weekend. The event has grown each Mother’s Day since that first race. On Saturday, May 8, 2010, participation in the 13th Annual Richmond

Race for the Cure was ten times larger. Lion Donna Baker, Knights Vision editor, (pictured in the pink hat) and her mother, Norma Sprague (no hat) were among the participants. Both are recent breast cancer survivors. Lion Donna and her mother were part of Team Dominion, the largest corporate sponsor at the race. Team Dominion has led the Corporate Teams Division for many years, showing how dedicated they are to the fight against breast cancer. Team Dominion had the largest team in Richmond Race for the Cure history and succeeded in raising $13,400.00 for the cure!!

Above is the “Parade of Pink” in honor of breast cancer survivors. Over 250 women and men marched in the parade, which started before the race at Brown’s Island in downtown Richmond. Over 10,000 runners supported the race, some of which are pictured here. Lion Donna spent a memorable Mother’s Day, shared with her mother, in support of finding a cure to a cancer that has affected both of them.
