Write about what you know. Gillian Wigmore took that sage

advice to heart in selections found in her second book of poetry, Dirt of Ages. Its pages are rich with imagery and memories from northern B.C. Nightwood Editions,

the book’s publisher, describes the book as “a brilliant book of poetry, steeped in potent imagery that is joyful yet fearful of the earthly and constructed landscapes of British Columbia.”

Having grown up in Vander-hoof and now living and work-ing in Prince George, Wigmore knows the northern terrain and its

energy very well. Her first book, soft geography (2007), won the ReLit Prize for Poetry and also got her shortlisted for the Dorothy Livesay BlC. Book Prize.

“She remembers Highway 16 when she was 16, the train tracks and transport trailers, dust and sunshine. She describes red-tails and kestrels on the powerlines,

hawks hunting mice in ‘grass past gold’ and the aspen leaves and ‘blackened wood’ of down-town Prince George,” reads her artist’s bio.

Wigmore is first to admit that readers may find her renderings point out not just the beauty of the landscape, but things they’d rather not see.

“I don’t sit down to write with that (response) in mind. I just write,” she said. “But the response has been very posi-tive. At the book launch (May 17 at Twisted Cork Restau-rant), a lot of people turned out and showed their sup-port. That means a lot to me. I put a little more pressure on myself, I think, with the sec-ond book.”

Philip Ponchet was “searching for answers” back in the 70s when he learned to “look within” and trust his own instincts.

Today he’s national director with Inner Peace Movement of Canada. Ponchet will be speaking at Esther’s Inn in Prince George on June 12 as part of a national lec-ture tour which began in Nova Scotia and so far has included six provinces.

“I was going through a family tragedy at the time – the same kinds of thing many people go through – and I was searching for answers because I found that I didn’t trust my own instincts any more,” he told the Free Press. “That led me to taking Inner Peace Movement workshops.”

We all have intuition, says Ponchet, but many people aren’t aware of it or don’t respond to it.

“Psychic abilities are a part of who we are but my [gift] is more about sensory perception, being able to feel what others feel – like a mother who is aware of how her children are feeling. When you get the answers to your questions, it’s like hitting all the green lights. It makes life easier.”

Most people answer ‘yes’ when Ponchet asks at his lectures if they have intuition. Far fewer follow that intuition, he said.

“People tend not to trust it so they over-think things. They hesitate. We all have a tendency to do that. Intuition comes much quicker so some people don’t realize they are already using it but they may misread it.”

For that reason, Ponchet teaches tech-niques and exercises the audience can use to tap into their inner self. His seminars ,called Trust Your Intuition, help partici-pants realize that they have their own answers within and they can find solu-tions to their situation by listening to the small voice inside and learning to trust themselves.

“We can live a happy life and do what we need to do,” he said. “Listening to our-selves will help us do that.”

The Inner Peace Movement of Canada is a non-profit, educational program that brings a message of hope and provides practical and simple tools to help people feel secure to pursue their life goals and overcome challenges and adversity in their lives. As people recognize the positive qualities within themselves, they learn how to be more relaxed, have more energy and balance and create unity with their loved ones, their colleagues and their com-munity.

The Prince George Native Friendship Centre (PGNFC), a visionary non-profi t society, has been serving the needs of Prince George for 40+ years. We are seeking candidates for the following position within our organization.

Director of Finance

The PGNFC has a relatively complex fi nancing structure. Within this model are diverse program offerings and multifaceted funding sources. To ensure fi scal responsibility and accountability in these areas the PGNFC is seeking a Director of Finance (DOF) for our organization with the relevant qualifi cations and employment experience required to fulfi ll this complex role. There will be a heavy emphasis on fi nancial reporting to meet the stringent requirements of contracts, requiring the Director of Finance to focus narrowly on the fi nance function of program budgets. A thorough knowledge and understanding of asset management and program budget requirements for nonprofi ts is critical as well.

GENERAL DEFINITION

The Director of Finance will provide both fi nancial and operational support to the organization. The DOF will report directly to the Executive Director to assist on all strategic and tactical matters as they relate to budget management, cost benefi t analysis, forecasting fi nancial and asset management needs and securing appropriate funding. The DOF will assist the Executive Director and the Senior Management Team in performing all tasks necessary to achieve the Centre’s mission and help carry out staff succession and growth plans.

Under the Direction of the Executive Director the DOF will:• Complete monthly, quarterly and annual fi nancial reporting for all program contracts in a timely

The Director of Finance must have a history of demonstrated dynamic leadership and possess the following Education and Experience:

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an accounting designation, such as CGA/CMA/etc., or an Accounting Diploma with a combination of experience in business administration and/or fi nancial management.

• Five to seven years of fi nancial and management experience with the day-to-day fi nancial operations of a community based not-for-profi t organization of at least fi fty (50) employees.

• Knowledge of not-for-profi t accounting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

• Professional fi nancial management competencies and property and asset management experience.

• Proven experience in writing reports on activities, strategic work plans, goals and objectives. • A thorough appreciation, awareness, working experience and sensitivity of Aboriginal history

and culture, as well as a thorough understanding of the complexities of working with diverse populations.

• A sound understanding of the Friendship Centre movement.• Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with local, regional, provincial and national

partners of the PGNFC.• Professional communication profi ciencies including presentation skills, writing ability, computer

profi ciency, including the SAGE software program, and authentic interpersonal skills.• Demonstrated team work, leadership skills and visionary ability to inspire and empower

others.• In-depth knowledge of the social service sector, community based programs and services,

funding sources, community and board relations.

The successful candidate must also: • Successfully complete Criminal Record Clearances, including Enhanced Security Clearance,
