June is here and the summer season begins! With the blooming flowers everywhere, brilliant sunshine and longer day-time, I simply can’t wait to dig out my picnic basket and rug from my cabinet, and have a great picnic with my friends and family at the Downs. There is much more than just sandwiches and snacks you can prepare for a picnic, my personal picnic favourites are the Spanish tortilla and the strawberry sorbet, for which you can prepare from our recipe on page 28.

If you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet or maybe planning a second one before the school term starts again, we have some great holiday ideas and activities that’s all about having greener lifestyle. Our feature story this month highlights three local destinations for you and your family to relax and enjoy the best of what nature can offer. Geocaching is a fun, nature based activity that you can play with your family anywhere in the UK or around the world. This month, we have some pointers and ideas on how to get you started in this green and addictive pastime.

For those of you who might have missed out on Reader’s Corner tryouts in the past months, you can read all about the feedback and experiences from one of our lucky readers and if you like the sound of it, maybe you can even give it a try yourself?

Let’s have a wonderful start to June, with lots of sunshine and smiles!

Getting away for the summer doesn’t have to mean flying to an exotic beach to enjoy an unspoilt natural environment.

By cutting down on air travel, not only do you reduce your carbon footprint but you can also teach your family the important social responsibility of protecting our environment. Just a stone’s throw away from home, South West England offers some of the country’s finest landscapes, beaches and heritage for you to explore. If you have already been to the mainstream attractions in the region and you think you know the region? Think again, because there is so much more for you to explore and enjoy. To give you some ideas, we have selected 3 holiday destinations in the region that aim to bring you closer to nature; in providing both relaxation and inspiration to your family members. If camping is your thing, why not try a real camping holiday set against the stunning backdrop of the Cornish countryside with your very own log fire,

lake fishing and staying in a real tipi! We also have a toddler friendly farm holiday where children can pet; feed and bond with lovely little farm animals and learn about where our food comes from. Lastly, if you don’t like staying in one place too long and you want to explore, why not book a barge and navigate the inland canals across the historic towns and landmarks in the region?

Staying in a canvas tipi, living close to the earth and feeling the rhythm of nature, is an extraordinary experience for the family to share. Just like the camping scenes you remember from old movies, it is a mixture of old fashioned camping set against the beautiful Cornish countryside. Cornish Tipi Holidays offers an environmentally friendly holiday for you to explore the idyllic landscape of your childhood dreams.

To make sure you fully enjoy the real camping experience, the campsite encourages you to make a wooden fire in your own fire pit to soak up the tipi camping experience. In contrast, many modern campsites do not allow real fire. The surrounding Tregildrans Quarry Lake offers swimming, canoeing and even a spot of rainbow trout fishing.

Why choose real camping? It is because it has the lowest possible impact on the land and environment. The tipi camping holiday has such low carbon emissions that your footprint could only be bettered by a survival expert. All firewood and other materials are locally sourced and local staffs are employed wherever possible. Living in a tipi is fun, less complex and less wasteful. You can prepare a supper of freshly caught lake trout on your own fire; no intensive farming, no packaging, no pollutants – just a gleaming fish and your own quiet satisfaction.

Cornish Tipi Holidays are members of Sustainability SouthWest, Futurefootprints and the COAST Project Network.

Sleeping Under the StarsOnce the sun sets, you can start up your campfire and barbeque your daily catch from the lake. Remember to bring plenty of marshmallows to toast after your barbeque, along with a warm cup of hot chocolate to keep you company when you start telling your amazing campfire stories.

Gazing to the evening stars, you can even try to spot all the constellations you can in the starry night skies. For those who are more musically inclined, what better way to wind up the evening with a merry sing-a-long by the campfire before turning in the night, only to start another perfect day again in the morning!

It’s not easy to keeping the whole family interested in one place whilst on holiday and after a few days, some might be bored or want to go home. If staying at one place for too long is not your thing, why not go on a canal holiday? With changing scenery every day, you can cruise the 4,000 miles of canals, rivers and lakes in the country by experiencing the outstanding beauty of our countryside. Whether you like to plan ahead and charter your route or you enjoy travelling on where your whims take you, a canal holiday is a unique way to relax with the family on a leisurely pace.

In the South West, you can access the Kennet & Avon Canal that links the Bristol Channel with the River Thames, where you can see the spectacular scenery of our best loved countryside. You can visit many historic aqueducts, towns and villages that tell the story of how these local communities were connected by waterways in the past.

There are many types of boats to choose from but the most popular is the traditional canal boat (also called the narrow boat). You don’t need a licence to drive a boat but, like the Highway Code (Much simpler) there are a few basic rules you need know before you start. Most boat hiring companies will provide a comprehensive manual in every boat and when you pick up your boat, the boatyard will also give you tuition, training and advice for you to enjoy your holiday.

Knowing where our everyday food comes from is much more than what you can teach your children from books. Why not consider a family holiday this summer where everyone in the family can learn a bit more and appreciate where our food comes from?

Higher Lank Farm in Cornwall has been run by the Finnemore family for the last 100 years and you can now experience their traditional family hospitality and as well as the chance to help out on the farm. The farm actively supports low food miles, British produce, real nappies and recycling to reduce landfill waste. In a toddler friendly environment, farmer Andrew and his family warmly offer a working farm holiday experience for you to discover.

The beautiful grade two listed 15th century farmhouse provides the choice of 3 family accommodation options designed with young visitors in mind. The oak panelling in the hall, wonderful granite fireplaces and Celtic crosses in the garden hint at the history of the house but children will think that they have gone to stay in a toy shop!

Real nappies holiday for toddlersIn partnership with the Cornish Real Nappy Campaign, Higher Lank Farm guests can borrow, free of charge, a selection of real nappies for the duration of their stay. The farm will also give advice and help and even wash the nappies for free! Using real nappies help to reduce the amount of nappy waste, which contribute to the overflow of rubbish in unnecessarily creating more landfills.

Reader’s Corner ReviewPre-school Swimming Classes Our reader Laura and her 2 years old daughter Lila joined our Reader’s Corner offer in January and enjoyed 3 taster classes of pre-school swimming by the Puddle Ducks (www.puddleducks.com). Here is her feedback on the swimming classes.

About the Swimming Classes“Lila really enjoyed the swimming lessons, it was a lovely pool with a very relaxed atmosphere. Although Lila has had swimming classes previously, they were quite a while ago and so we were pleasantly surprised at how quickly she settled back in”

Teaching Quality“Catherine is an excellent instructor and we were immediately put at ease under her guidance. She was friendly and attentive and always gave clear instructions. The classes were well structured and all activities followed on nicely”

Centre environment“We joined the classes at the Plush Hotel, which has a lovely pool. Although the location was slightly out of town for us (towards the airport), it was really no problem as the traffic on a Saturday was fine. However, the changing facilities are quite minimal, although adequate”

Will you recdommend to your friends“We would have no problems recommending Puddle Ducks to friends, we enjoyed the classes so much we will be signing up for the rest of the term”

Hide and Chic geocachingImagine going on a picturesque family walk in the countryside where the weather is perfect and the kids are having a great time playing and enjoying nature’s surroundings… almost! Usually by the time everything is planned and ready; you might find that someone at home (dad or the kids) just want to stay in to watch TV or play video games. Couch based entertainments are everywhere and their distractions are hard to refuse after long school or work week. Without having worry about incurring additional expenses and yet finding an outdoor activity that can interest the entire family (got to be cool enough for the older kids!). This summer, the world around you is yours to re-discover with the latest craze of Geocaching!

Geocaching refers to GEO for geography, and to CACHING, the process of hiding a cache. A cache in hiking or camping is a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions. Geocaching is a worldwide game of treasure hunting that started in 2000 with the introduction of GPS (Global Positioning System) and now has over 1.7 million active geocaches and over 5 million players (geocachers) worldwide. These caches are hidden containers that contain souvenirs left by geocachers which can be located by using a device with GPS navigation software such as Sat Nav or a GPS-enabled mobile phone. There over 23,000 geocaches hidden in UK.

Every cache always contains a logbook or logsheet. The logbook contains information from the owner of the cache and notes from visitors. When geocachers return from an adventure, they can log their finds on an online cache page, creating a dynamic community and social network. A geocacher never knows what the owner or other visitors of the cache may have left there to enjoy.

Anyone can be a geocacher and the range of geocaching activities available covers all physical levels of adventure seeking you might be looking for. To begin, you and your family might want to start with easier caches. Cache listings on Geocaching.com include difficulty and terrain ratings (1/1 – the easiest and 5/5 – the most difficult) to help geocachers choose a cache that is right for them.

Anywhere from beaches to mountaintops to urban areas, geocachers should read the cache descriptions so that they know the difficulty of terrain ratings before heading out on an adventure. Some caches can be technical and physically challenging; some caches can be located on the side of a cliff and require rock climbing equipment, or may be underwater and accessible only by SCUBA. Geocaches located in cities are often incredibly small, so that people walking by don’t notice them. The cache page helps geocachers understand any special equipment or skills they might need to find a geocache and will often specify the cache size.

Where are caches found?

Things to note before you go

Geocaching:

1. Make sure your GPS device is fully

charged, not all geocaches are located in the

city and if they are off the beaten track, you

don’t want to lose your GPS when you are on

the top of a hill or in a forest before finding

the geocache!

2. Geocaching is an outdoor activity. Do

make sure you wear comfortable shoes

and long sleeve clothing and a hat for

extra protection against thorns, stinging

nettles or insects when trekking in nature’s

environment.

3. Take something, leave something. If you

are searching for a box that contains prizes

and you managed to find it to claim your

prize, do remember to bring something of

equal or higher value to deposit back into the

geocache so that future visitors can also enjoy

the game as well.

4. When opening geocaches, be careful

not to open a cache with non-geocachers

(muggles!) around. This is to preserve the

integrity of the game and to keep non-

geocachers from disturbing the cache so

that the container’s location stays a mystery

to others who may be looking. Also, put the

cache back exactly where you found it so

others can follow the same clues you did.

New Party IdeasPreparing your child’s birthday party doesn’t need to be a last minute panic. Soft play areas and discos are great but how long will they keep them entertained for year after year? Luckily, there are people like Karina who runs Bubbletastic, to save the day. She’ll come to your home (or local hall) and run a soap making party. For children aged 5 and up, the 2 hours group activity lets them make their own soap, bath bombs, lip balm and bubble bath. She comes along with a car full of goodies, lots of patience to help them make their own bath creations, which they take home in their party-bag …no more plastic rubbish and sugar invading the house!

Pigmentation During Pregnancyby Marie-Louise Coster www.allaboutmi.co.uk

During pregnancy you will experience a lot of changes, particularly with your skin, often from the first trimester. This is extremely common and nothing to worry about.

Hyperpigmentation appears as darkening of the skin (otherwise know as Chloasma or Melasma), usually in small patches. This occurrence is due to the increased levels of oestrogen, progesterone and melanocytes which cause an over production of melanin – a natural

substance that gives our skin pigment or colour. The most common areas for this alteration in pigmentation are areolae, nipples, arm pits, inner thighs and sometimes a dark line – called linea nigra – forms on the abdomen from the navel down towards the genital area. When the pigmentation occurs on the face it is most common around the upper lip, nose, cheekbones and forehead sometimes forming the shape of a mask. Chloasma can be genetic – 30% of women who develop pigmentation have at least one other family member with the same condition - and may become more prominent as the pregnancy progresses and also with each pregnancy, women with darker skin are generally more prone to this condition than women with lighter skin.

Pigmentation starts to fade once you start breast feeding or within a few months of giving birth and your skin will return to its normal shade, although in some women it may never completely disappear particularly if you have taken the contraceptive pill before pregnancy.

Although you may not be able to avoid it you can stop the pigmentation from getting any worse during the pregnancy

- Wear a sun cream (minimum SPF 30) – exposure to UV rays stimulates the melanocytes that produce melanin causing a change in skin colour thus making pigmentation darker.

- Adopt a good skincare routine consisting of cleanse, tone and moisturising.

- Drink lots of water – this is not only good for your skin but also for the growth and development of your baby.

- Sleep well - this will assist in keeping the skin radiant.

- Refrain from using any bleaching products or products designed for pigmented skin during pregnancy as once you have given birth the pigmentation may correct itself.

Pigmentation During Pregnancy A few months after you have given birth, or once you have started breast feeding, the

pigmentation should fade. If however, it does not now is the time to treat it. There are a variety of treatments and products available for pigmented skin but pleas be aware that this may not be an instant result and may take a few months to be corrected.

Our skin renews itself every 28 days so you need to give any new regime at least this long before you start you see any sort of difference. Look for products with ingredients such as AHA’s, Retinol and Vitamin C and always be sure to use a whole range designed for pigmentation. A good skincare routine should at least consist of a specific cleanser, toner, moisturiser, exfoliator and mask and with pigmented skin it is compulsory to always wear a sun protection factor. As for treatments facial peels using glycolic acid or microdermabrasion are best suited to treating pigmentation due to their intense exfoliation. A course of treatment would need to be committed too, usually consisting of 1-2 treatments a week for 6 weeks, accompanied with the use of adequate skincare products at home.

Don’t let pigmentation get you down, enjoy your pregnancy and remember it is only temporary and can be corrected given time and in the meantime you can conceal it with make up.
