Well, it’s been a busy 2 months for us folksat OTG. We’ve all managed to hit the lakeson several occasions, whether to sh, knee-board, go tubing, or to just soak up some ofthe nice weather we’ve had.

Yeah, my list of “honey-do’s” hasn’t gottenany shorter, but hey.....I need material towrite about! I’m quite certain that nobody isinterested in how tall the grass was when Igot around to mowing it. Or how the woodpile isn’t getting any larger. Or why the screen door is still broken. Or........well, youget the idea.

We’ve been able to hit a couple of shingtournaments, run in a roadrace (page 4), savekids from a sinking boat (page 9), had theBEST CHICKEN WINGS EVER somewhere inthe White Mountains and even learned the104th reason why ethanol poses problemsto older boat motors.

So thanks for picking up the latest issue of On The Go New England, and read aboutwhere we’ve been and what we’ve been up to. After reading about it, get out andtry out some of the places we’ve been, or try out a few things we’ve done. Whileyou’re doing that, I got a lawn to mow.

So I decided to take part in this raceI heard about, 4 On The 4th, in Keene,NH. I haven’t run at any length since,uh, I dunno.......almost 20 years. Hey,I was on my high school’s track team, about, uh, I dunno.......22 years ago.How hard can this be? I’m not goingout to win the damn thing; just gonnaparticipate. I’ll get all hard-core andtrain (like I did “back in the day”) andwith any luck, I’ll crack the 4 miles in40 minutes!

Ever hear that tune by Toby Kieth,“As Good As I Once Was”? Well, Iwasn’t. Not even close. Perhaps onlytraining 8 times in the month leadingup to the race had something to dowith it. These legs hadn’t seen 4miles since,uh, I dunno........20 yearsago.

I got the chance to meet up with some friends from high school, whowere on that same track team. It wasgood seeing them again and I lookforward to next year’s race. Proceedsgo to a good cause too. Pathways forKeene, Inc is a non-prot, group ofvolunteers that promote the devel-opment, maintenance, and use ofalternative transportation in the cityof Keene, NH. Look them up on the web and maybe we’ll see ya next year.Oh, and I did hit my goal: 40:48.

Jane Vachon, NHFG Summer Camp Barry Conservation Camp Youth Fishing Week Summer is a great time to get the kids involved in outdoor activities, and here's some great news: There's still room in two July sections at the overnight summer camp program for youth at Barry Conservation Camp in Milan, N.H. The week of July 8-13 is "All about Fishing" (for boys and girls age 10-16), where kids enjoy a week of learning about or sharpening their angling skills and enjoying traditional summer camp activities. There's also room in the July 29-August 3 week, "Wild Side II," an exciting week of outdoor adventure for youth age 12-16. They'll paddle on a remote lake, explore local wildlife, learn outdoor survival skills, and enjoy campfires, swimming, hikes and other outdoor activities. Spaces are limited, so sign up soon at http://extension.unh.edu/4H/4HCamps.htm or contact [email protected] or 603-788-4961. The camp is operated by UNH Cooperative Extension 4-H and the N.H. Had an opportunity to spend aweekend on Lake Winnipesaukeeat the Center Harbor Inn. Had abeautiful beach, great view fromthe balcony (over- looking thelake), and kept the boat out ona dock (with lights and electricty). As president of a bass fishing club, it’s an excellent locationfor a weekend-long tournament. The public boat launch andtown docks are adjacent to the Center Harbor Inn.www.centerharborinn.com

In June, I participated in a benefit bass tournamentfor the Keene High School Fishing club. It was heldout of Norm’s Marina, in Hinsdale, NH and had agreat turn out (21 boats).

On our way home from the White Mountains,we stopped to have lunch at Truants Tavern, in Lincoln.

great service. www.truantstavern.com

Spent the 4th of July ripping it up onLake Contoocook, sunning, tubing, and

knee-boarding. This was also the locationof the sunken vessel mentioned on page 9.

During our stay in Conway, we stopped atMoat Mountain for dinner. Let me tell ya,

this place is great. The chicken wings werethe best I’ve ever had! I got the six-samplerbeer, and the beer was very good. Overall,

an excellent experience, and would noproblem travelling across the state fortheir wings. www.moatmountain.com

.......The WRONGWAYOn he Go

how NOT to do things

Got Plug? My family and my buddy’ s family head out for a day on Contoocoock Lake. Wepull our rigs into the launch, and throw the trucks into park, as we ponder how 6trucks and trailers, and 3 cars take up 20+ spots. We also observe a mom and her3 children standing patiently by, wearing life preservers, waiting for two gentlemento get the boat up and going.

So we game plan how we’re gonna park our trucks, launch our boats, and o we go.Before we pushed o, my buddy recommends new spark plugs to the guys trying toget their boat started, and they decided to leave to get some.

We had fun; pulled up on an island, relaxed a bit, did a little o-shore shing, and thenwent knee-boarding (well, my daughter and his son did anyway). His wife had to workthat day, but was going to meet us at the launch, and we would go pick her up. Shecalled, so we brought everyone in, and made the quick trip back to the ramp.

As we idle back to the ramp, we seethe family is still tinkering with theirboat (hour or so later). They seemed tohave gotten it to run better; not great, but better. As they did circles in thelaunch area, the driver yells, “Should wego?”. The children, in all their excitementyell, “YEAH!”. The driver asks again, andthe children yell even louder. So othey go..................

They didn’t make it 100 feet into thechannel when one of us noticed theirboat half- sunk and nose up towards thesky. People were swimming, things from the boat were oating......talk about a badday getting worse.

One would think that this situation could have been avoided if any one of the occup-ants would have noticed that they were knee-deep in water, in the boat. Although avaliant eort from the kids bailing water with sand-castle buckets was somewhatsuccessful, it seems the faulty bilge pump and missing plug prevailed.

Note the number of trucks requiredto remove a sunken boat.....

Things To Check BeforeYou Launch Your Boat

Now, at rst, you’re going to think that some of these, “go without saying”, or may seemreally obvious. However, it would appear common sense goes out the window, with the

purchase of a boat. So for those of you that left it behind, here’s a few things to consider:

1.) If your four wheel drive doesn’t work, or you don’t have four wheel drive, stick to a paved launch.2.) Does your engine start? This can pose obvious problems before you get too far on the water. 3.) Be sure to unstrap the boat from the trailer. This makes unloading go a bit smoother.4.) Be sure to remove the motor-toter. This will allow the power-trim to work as designed.5.) Make sure the plug is in the boat. See page 9.6.) Make sure at least one person is an experienced boater. Wouldn’t hurt if someone also knows how to back up a trailer too.7.) Make sure you register your boat. It’s also a good idea to have insurance, especially if you screwed up any of the above.
