Driven by strong year-over-year growth in the utility and residen-tial markets, the United States installed 1,330 MW of solar PV in the first quarter of 2014. Ac-cording to GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industry As-sociation’s (SEIA) Q1 2014 U.S. Solar Market Insight Report, the United States installed 232 MW of residential PV, exceeding the

non-residential (commercial) market’s 225 MW for the first time in the history of the report.

Ongoing strength in the resi-dential sector and volatility in the non-residential market spurred this historic milestone. Despite the dip in non-residential instal-lations, GTM Research and SEIA expect the market to rebound and exceed the residential market in

2014 annual PV installations.In another significant develop-

ment, Q1 2014 was the largest quarter ever for concentrating solar power (CSP) due to the completion of the 392-MWac Ivanpah project and the Genesis Solar project’s second 125-MWac phase. With a total of 857 MW expected to be completed by year’s end, 2014 is on pace to be the

largest year for CSP in history.

“Solar accounted for 74 percent of all new U.S. electric capacity installed in Q1 2014, further sig-naling the rapidly increas-ing role that solar is play-ing in the energy market,” said Shayle Kann, senior vice president at GTM Research. “Expect to see a resurgence in the non-residential market, combined with continued incremental residential growth, throughout the rest of this year.”

Not to be outshone by the success of the resi-dential sector, the utility PV market continued its dominance, growing 171 percent between Q1 2013 and Q1 2014. With 873 MW installed, it ac-counted for two-thirds of total installations during the quarter. Large-scale projects that were under contracts and negotia-tions between 2010 and 2012 are now becoming a reality.

The U.S. solar market is off to a strong start in

2014. GTM Research and SEIA forecast 6.6 GW of PV will be installed in the United States by the end of the year, up 39 percent over 2013.

“Solar energy is now generating enough clean, reliable and affordable electricity to effectively power three million American homes, while creating thousands of new jobs nationwide and pumping nearly $15 bil-lion a year into the U.S. economy,” said Rhone Resch, SEIA president and CEO. “Solar is also providing a big boost for our environment. The 14,800 MW of solar currently installed in the U.S. can generate enough pollution-free electric-ity to displace 18 billion pounds of coal or 1.8 gal-lons of gasoline. That’s the equivalent of removing 3.5 million passenger cars off our roads and high-ways. For states trying to meet new, enhanced air quality standards, solar can be a real game changer.”

KEy findings:

■ The United States installed 1,330 MW of solar PV in Q1 2014, up 79% over Q1 2013 and the second-largest quarter for solar installations in the history of the market

■ Cumulative operating PV capac-ity stood at 13,395 MWdc with 482,000 individual systems online as of the end of Q1 2014

■ PV growth was driven primarily by the utility solar market, which installed over 800 MW in Q1 2014, up from 322 MW in Q1 2013

■ Q1 2014 was the first quarter in which residential PV installations exceeded non-residential (com-mercial) installations nationally

■ More than one third of residen-tial PV installations came online without any state incentive for the first time ever in Q1 2014

■ Q1 2014 saw school, government and non-profit PV installations add more than 100 MW for the second straight quarter

■ 74% of new electric generating capacity in the United States in Q1 2014 came from solar

■ GTM Research and SEIA forecast that PV installations will reach 6.6 GW in 2014, up 39 percent over 2013 and nearly double the mar-ket size in 2012

SunPower Corp. has been selected by NV Energy to build a 19-MWdc solar PV power system at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The system is expected to be constructed next year, contingent on contract approval by Nevada’s Public Utilities Commis-sion. It will be the second major so-lar installation located at the military facility — SunPower completed a

14-MWdc solar power system at the base in 2007.

“We are pleased to team again with NV Energy. In 2007, it took nine months to construct the 14-MW plant at Nellis Air Force Base, which was the largest solar photo-voltaic power plant in the U.S. at the time,” said Howard Wenger, Sun-Power president, regions. “Today, we

can install more than 1 MW per day at our larger power plant sites, creat-ing long-term value for our utility customers and competing effectively with traditional energy sources. the opportunity to bring more clean, renewable energy to power facilities and military operations at Nellis Air Force Base,” said Stacey Kusters, vice president, renewable energy and origination for NV Energy. “Our partnership with SunPower is a key component of achieving our renewable energy goals at a competitive cost.”

At the site, SunPower will build a SunPower Oasis Power Plant system. Oasis is a fully integrated, modular solar power block that is engineered to rapidly and cost-ef-fectively deploy utility-scale solar projects while optimizing land use.

According to estimates provided

by the U.S. Environmental Protec-tion Agency, the completed plant will offset the annual production of almost 27,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is the equivalent of removing 136,800 cars from Nevada’s roads over the next 25 years.

RBI Solar announced on June 3 that it had signed an agreement to acquire Renusol GmbH, one of the PV industry’s leading solar mounting specialists for residential and commercial projects in Europe and the United States. Renusol is 100 percent owned by Centrosolar Group AG. The acquisition includes the American subsidiary Renu-sol America which is 100 percent owned by Renusol GmbH.

RBI Solar designs, engineers, manufactures and installs solar mounting systems for commercial- and utility-scale PV projects.

The acquisition continues RBI’s strategic focus on developing high-quality robust solar structures and engineered solutions to meet market requirements and needs on both a national and an international basis.

“With Renusol we gain over 15 years of expertise in the area of residential and commercial projects. This is a decisive step in our com-pany growth and fits perfectly with our products and service portfolio. Renusol has proven, innovative and cost-effective solutions,” stated Rich-ard Reilly, RBI Solar president.

NABCEP credit opportunities.

There are no clouds to dampen solar this year: Employment opportunities in the U.S. solar industry are experiencing

unprecedented growth. In 2013, solar jobs grew 20 percent — 10 times the national job growth average, signaling that the industry is striding toward

maturation. According to the Solar Foundation, 77 percent of the indus-try’s newly created jobs were formed specifically for the solar industry, rath-er than existing jobs expanding respon-sibilities to solar-related tasks. In total, 24,000 new solar workers joined the economy in the last year.

The solar installation sector has proven to be the most robust across the industry, accounting for 12,500 new workers in 2013. Installation jobs are appealing due to both increasing demand and generous wages — installers are paid an average of $24/hour, an amount closer to that of skilled electricians than to roof-ers and construction workers. It is also not uncommon to hear solar installers mentioning they enjoy the morale-boosting bene-fits of being in a sustainable industry.

However, entering the solar installation sector can be chal-lenging. The amount of regula-tions and certifications needed can confuse and discourage workers from making the jump into this growing field. In addi-tion, for those already in the solar industry, training sessions help attendees stay current in the field to ensure that their busi-nesses thrive. Whether that’s knowing how to design and install battery-based systems (a rapidly expanding niche within the industry), or adding in opera-tions and maintenance as part of a business’ services, or staying on top of performance modeling to better predict returns. More pro-fessionals entering the market can also mean an increasingly competitive landscape. Because of these worries common in any maturing industry, installers may wonder in what ways one can prove he or she is qualified to be in the industry and consistently perform top-quality installations?

To address this, organizations such as Solar Energy International (SEI) are bridging the gap to educate future install-

ers by offering specialized classes, business services and hands-on technical training. Other organi-zations, like the North American Board of Certified Energy

Practitioners (NABCEP), have helped standardize training by publishing Entry Level Learning Objectives for fundamental PV and solar heating courses, as well as industry-validated Job Task Analysis ( JTAs) for PV installa-tion, PV technical sales and solar heating installation, which guide advanced training in these pro-fessions. Those who have educa-tion, experience and pass an examination can earn profession-al certification in these fields, which is increasingly being required by employers, incentive programs and consumers.

Getting certified in solar takes time, practice and a bit of upfront investment. For example, the NABCEP certification is the most widely recognized certifica-tion system in the United States. This requires installation profes-sionals to complete a minimum of 68 hours of safety classes and

training and have a decision-making role on at least three sys-tems before qualifying to take the examination. However, for professionals hoping to distin-

guish themselves from other installers, obtaining the right credentials with these certifica-tions provides a competitive advantage, expands possible job opportunities and provides assur-ance to future customers.

This year, Intersolar North America is offering attendees the chance to earn NABCEP con-tinuing education (CE) credits during the event. Taking place in California, the leader in clean energy jobs, Intersolar North America partnered with NABCEP and Solar Energy International to develop a variety of workshops and talks catered to attendees across all levels to take advantage of solar opportunities. Asking for customer reviews cAn help

secure future business.

Newsflash: Your cus-tomers have the Internet, and they know how to use it.

They don’t just use it to watch cute cat videos and go on Facebook. Today’s consumer does considerable online research on products and com-panies before deciding to move forward with a purchase.

For solar installers, getting great online reviews is now more important than ever. It’s time to get familiar with the world of Yelpers, Angie’s List and the quest for five stars.

Ask And you shAll receive

The easiest way to get online reviews is — drum roll please — to ask your customers.

Take the time to write a brief, straightforward e-mail. First, start by thanking your custom-ers for their business and con-gratulating them on the deci-sion to use clean, solar energy. You should then ask them to write a review, and be sure to provide links to your online profiles on review websites such as Yelp, Angie’s List or Solar Reviews. Finish the e-mail by explaining how much you value your customers’ feedback and thanking them one last time for their business.

Then, fire it off to your cus-tomers. You want to ask them for a review when they are at their happiest. During a solar installation, there are three potential times: 1) Right after the solar installation is complete; 2) When the solar system is turned on by the utility compa-ny; or 3) Around the time they receive their first energy bill and

see their solar savings.Sit back, relax and watch as

the positive reviews roll in. Be sure to thank your customers for taking the time to review your company. Some choose to reward positive reviews with small gifts (for instance, a $5 gift card for coffee), but in most cases, a heartfelt e-mail is more than enough.

brAce yourself for A bAd review

It’s inevitable. After tons of online reviews full of praise and warm fuzzies, a customer will write a negative review that sheds your company in a bad light.

Resist the urge to lash out and immediately defend your com-pany. If your reaction is extreme-ly emotional (either really angry or incredibly sad), then take some time to cool down before you respond. Once you feel calm and collected, respond (privately if possible) in a polite and pro-fessional manner.

Thank them for their feed-back and figure out how you can take care of the problem. If their complaints seem justified, admit fault and try to make your wrongs right. Once all is resolved, kindly ask the custom-er to remove the review. Most customers will remove their negative reviews once the per-ceived problem has been resolved.

However, remember you can’t win them all. There are some people who were born to com-plain, and no matter how nicely you ask, they just won’t take down their negative review. If this is the case, move on and focus on balancing out the bad review with five good ones.

why it’s worth the work

Getting reviews is a lot of work and sometimes you have to deal with a not-so-happy customer. Why go through all the trouble? Two words — more leads.

All review websites provide your contact information so that someone can easily contact you and inquire about a solar estimate. Plus, leads from review websites are typically higher-quality leads. Think about it — customers who research your company have most likely researched solar installation and convinced themselves that it’s a worth-while pursuit. Most important-ly, they already think you are great company that does great work — all thanks to your great online reviews.

spreAding the word In the digital era, glowing online reviews is just like your customers talking you up to their friends and families. So, go forth! Build up your bank of positive reviews and watch as they “spread the word” about your company, eventually bring-ing in a flood of potential cus-tomers who are ready to go solar.

OCIome major utility-scale solar proj-ects are coming online in Texas, all thanks to OCI Solar Power. The San Antonio-based developer, owner and operator of PV projects across the country recently finished the 41-MW Alamo I (pictured) and 4.4-MW Alamo II solar farms and

is hard at work on additional installations in Texas. OCI Solar Power formed in 2012 after reaching an

agreement with San Antonio utility CPS Energy to build 400 MW of solar power in the area. The company was a new energy division of OCI Enterprises, headquartered in Atlanta and the North American subsidiary of South Korea’s OCI Company Ltd., a global green energy and chemical S

Sara Krueger, communications specialist at OCI, says the company focuses on areas in the United States with an interest in industrial planning and finding utility companies that are looking to add solar energy to their portfolios. OCI is especially proud of its San Antonio-

based projects, which are creating 800 permanent jobs, either at the solar farms or through OCI Solar Power’s relocation to the area.

Expect to hear more about OCI Solar Power in the coming years, as it closes in on its 400-MW goal in Texas and expands into other areas of the country.

T he microinverter market is turning into a pretty com-petitive place. Enphase is a

dominating force, and multi-mega-watt inverter manufactures — like SMA America and Power-One (now doing business as ABB) — have recently launched their own mini converters. And now the No. 2 global microinverter supplier (as ranked by GTM Research) is start-ing to focus its attention on North

America. APS America, the latest division of Altenergy Power Systems (APS), which focuses much of its attention on China and Australia, has big plans for expansion in the coming years, including introducing the first three-phase microinverter that works with four modules.

“We see ourselves as an innovator in this industry,” says APS America CEO Kelly Samson. “Over half of our employees are in research and

development. This is an industry where you move or you perish. You have to keep innovating.”

edge and started supplying microin-verters to China and Australia, and APS was soon the largest supplier in both countries. APS America opened in Poulsbo, Wash., near Seattle, and has seen success on projects in Washington and Hawaii and recently announced distribution partnerships in Florida and Nevada.

“The heart of what we do is a field programmable gate array (FPGA), which gives us a ton of flexibility,” Samson says. “There are a lot of components in our world, but the FPGA is the brains. It gives us the ability to program very easily. Every year, panels are different. Every year ,there’s a difference in efficiencies. We can program [our inverters] and meet that demand.”

The APS flagship product is the YC500A, a dual-module microin-verter.

“Our position is that we’re able to do a dual microinverter at an attrac-tive price point due to the competi-tive advantages our topology has,” Samson says. “We have a different architecture than others. Others have tried… [but] it was not a suc-cessful ride for them.”

Microinverters typically work with one panel. As companies have begun experimenting with dual-panel microinverters, things get a little complicated. Instead of one new unit, some microinverter manufac-turers were essentially taking two individual microinverters and com-bining it into one box. It was twice the size of a single microinverter. (United Kingdom-headquartered Enecsys’s dual-panel microinverter is one exception.)

“Our big leap forward was to be able to do a dual that is not twice as big as the single,” Samson says. “There’s a lot of dual use of parts inside that box. The box is 60 per-cent bigger than a single. That does a lot of magic things for you — makes the box smaller and lighter, makes it more efficient, less costly to

manufacture, cheaper to ship and we have a significant price advantage over the competition.”

APS’s new ground-breaking prod-uct is the YC1000, the first three-phase microinverter that works with four modules. It’s moving along in beta testing and is currently deployed in China, including at a 230-kW commercial roof project near Shanghai. Its 780 modules only needed 195 YC1000 microinverters to power successfully, significantly cutting down on costs.

REAl-tImE tEstINgAPS microinverters were recently

chosen for a project that is now Washington’s largest solar commu-nity. Grow Community, a new hous-ing development on Bainbridge Island, built its homes to be net zero (or consuming no energy). The houses come with the ability to pro-duce their own power and were designed to support PV panels on its roofs.

“Grow Community decided to make all the houses solar panel-ready and let the folks decide when they move in if they wanted that or not,” Samson says. “All [of the first phase of homes] have gone solar. They had three model houses built, and they sold the entire first phase without a realtor. It’s an attractive community.”

Samson says it’s been a great way for APS to prove its microin-verters are dependable products.

“It’s been great for us as a busi-ness,” he says. “You’re monitoring your inverter in real time. When you have individual houses with the same brand of microinverter on the roof, it’s interesting to see if they’ll cross-talk or not. What keeps you from picking up the information from the panels next door? It’s all the same grid. We wanted to see if that would work, and sure enough it worked just fine. It’s been really good to have that life-sized incubator 10 miles from our factory.”

Samson says as things even out with module efficiencies, inverters will become a bigger player in the solar market.

“We feel like we’re in an industry that’s going to do very well in the next few years,” he says. “Modules are becoming more generic. They’re being more commoditized. The price point and the quality point between the top module manufac-turers is a very narrow band — 2 to 3 cents per watt at most. They’re all fairly consistent in quality and price. All of a sudden, if you have a micro-inverter that saves 8 cents per watt, that’s a big number. It’s interesting to see how that’s going to unfold.

“We are ready to go to the dance.”

Palomar solar recently finished a 378-kw rooftop solar power system installation for waxie sanitary supplies at its corporate headquar-ters in san diego, calif. the sys-tem will offset 80 percent of waxie’s utility bill with a four-year payback. Palomar used unirac ballasted sys-tems on the project.

iKea completed a 1.2-mw solar installation on the roof of its new miami-dade store, set to open to the public sometime this summer. the solar array in sweetwater, fla., is now the largest in south florida. combined with rooftop arrays in orlando, tampa and sunrise, this fourth solar project will keep iKea as the state’s largest non-utility solar owner.

the 178,000-sq-ft solar array consists of 4,620 panels and will produce approximately 1,738,876 kwh of electricity annually for the store. for the development, design and installation of the miami-dade store’s customized solar power system, iKea contracted with rec solar.

this installation represents the 40th solar project for iKea in the united states, contributing to the solar presence atop nearly 90 percent of its u.s. locations and a total generation of 38 mw. iKea owns and operates each of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings and globally has allocated $1.8 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2015.

microgrid solar and Kirkberg co. quickly completed an 80-panel installation at the muny, the oldest outdoor theater in the united states, before the start of its 96th season. the project is expected to produce 25,000 kwh in its first year. Billy Elliot was the site’s season opening performance on June 16.
