Liberal individualism in America (and elsewhere) went wrong because it thought that individual self-cultivation was its own End, but, in fact, self-cultivation is not an End, but a way of searching for my End. The wondrous irony is that pursuing the meaning of my individual life always ends up propelling me beyond my individual self toward others. The self-enclosed individual merely achieves a supreme loneliness and meaninglessness. Precisely as individual, I am nothing. The purpose of political liberalism is not self-enclosure. The purpose is to give each human person the inalienable right to pursue his/her own meaning without having it imposed upon him/her by any State or Church or other Power. When Christianity threatened people with the Gospel, the Gospel is what was lost. The threats (“believe our way or go to hell”) exposed a great insecurity, a profound lack of self-confidence. You cannot threaten people into heaven, you can only love them into the Kingdom of God. I have such confidence that God is really essentially revealed to us in Jesus of Nazareth that I have ceased to worry about the insufficiency of my neighbors. They don’t go to church enough, or they aren’t Christian; or they are agnostic; or whatever. Gods’ love--Jesus’ teaches me--will find a way. I don’t have to worry about them in that regard. I do have to worry about their well-being in other ways...are they well? Do they have basic human needs met? Are they hungry? In other words, I do have to love them. No, strike that. It is not that I have to love them, it is that I get to love them. And as I love them the Nothing that I am becomes Something. This love fills me up and I become a real person. Do you see this sublime irony? We need to be free to be individuals because only then will we be free to become more than individuals. I am not afraid of what will happen to me (with my weak, cowardly Christianity), nor am I afraid for them. Love has cast out fear. God’s love for me (and us) underwrites my love. Suddenly I am Everything. Have a great summer!! In Christ, --Pastor

Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ, Kalu Rimpoche wrote: “Reason tells me I am nothing. Love tells me I am everything. Between these poles, my life unfolds.” I like the quote, so I tried to rework it from the perspective of Jesus and his understanding of love, and I came up with this: Whenever I think I am everything, I become nothing; but when, out of love for others, I make myself nothing, I become everything! Parish Life Events for July & August 2010

Right after Polly presented me with the Parish Life Wooden Spoon at the CTS Picnic; I was reminded that the Footnotes deadline was at day’s end for July and August. So here goes:

July 4th Independence Day Celebration: We will first meet for a party at the McMichael’s and 4pm. This will be a “pot-luck” event, so bring whatever foods you want to share; your place settings, sun screen and bug repellant and a blanket if you’re going to the fireworks festivities afterwards. Parish Life will provide drinks, but you can bring your own if you feel so led! Please let Melanie and Bob know as soon as you can if you are coming to this event. Afterwards, we will go to the Montgomery County Fairgrounds for the fireworks. We won’t be complete without you.

I will be planning other events which I will announce through communiqué, announcements before church, the Christ the Servant Website and Facebook page.

Please contact Dave Larrabee: 703-963-7496 or [email protected] if you have any questions or suggestions.

Have a wonderful summer!

In Christ,

WOW! Women of Worth

This is the story of how one life can make a big difference in the world. Sarah Adams grew up as the daughter of missionaries serving in the Congo. After studying Geography at Mary Washington, she met her husband David! David is the son of our very own Erica and Bob Adams of CTS ! at the Defense Mapping Agency. They decided to devote the next ten years of their lives to church work with the

poor and homeless in inner city Los Angeles. While there, David graduated from Fuller Seminary. Soon after, another missionary couple asked Sarah and David to join them in East Africa. They have worked in Kampala, Uganda for the past 12 years. While David is the Academic Dean and teacher at Glad Tidings Bible College, Sarah keeps finding new and creative ways to enrich the lives of impoverished women and their children. Sarah and David have one daughter, Rebekah, 16.

Sarah’s love for God and the women and children of Uganda is immeasurable. She began finding ways to help women create better lives for themselves and for their families, as well as strengthen their faith and community. Sarah started WOW some six years ago. One of her first projects was teaching the women to make and sell peanut butter. They tie dye fabric and make fair trade beads and crafts to help support

their families. Presently WOW concentrates on teaching tailoring, cooking, computer skills, bead making and urban gardening.

The women started a bridal rental with gowns donated by Jireh Women, a women’s ministry in England. WOW recently built a wood-fired community oven where they can bake cakes for special occasions, such as birthdays and weddings, if they get good enough! Cake makes an occasion special, but few homes have a means of baking. For most, buying cake from a bakery is a luxury.

Many of the fair trade items are made with beads created out of recycled

paper. The paper is cut and rolled, one bead at a time, then shellac is added to make the beads more durable. The beads are used to make necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and even purses.

In January of 2009 Single Mom Solutions was created when the older women felt the need to reach out and help young single mothers, many of them teenagers, in the community. Last summer they found a suitable property to rent and begin fixing up the building. There they started The Growing Tree Preschool in the mornings, and in the afternoons the women gather to learn new skills, make fair trade items and support one another as they learn and grow. While Sarah and David

were originally sponsored by the Four Square Gospel Church they now work independently, receiving no salary, relying solely on the generosity of their family and friends to support their work in Uganda. Now that’s really “living on love”! All money made on the sale of fair trade items goes directly to the women who make the items. Mark-up from the wholesale price goes to support the Women of Worth and their projects.

Sarah continues to enrich the lives of women in Uganda, one woman at a time, one bead at a time. To learn more, check out the WOW blog created by Sarah’s friend Cate Frazier-Neely: http://womenofworthuganda.wordpress.com

Please Send Me Your Story

In October 2009 I announced that as part of the year of celebration for Pastor Bastien I was embarking on a project to capture a history of his years of service with Christ the Servant. Phase I was researching archived and current documents to identify events and activities over this twenty-five year span of history. I am still working on this phase but it is under control and I am ready to solicit input from all of you for the second part of this effort.

As I said in the October article I want each and every one of you (old, young, student of all grades and levels, members and friends, recent arrivals and people here before Pastor Bastien was called) to think about your years at CTS and send me your favorite story or remembrance. It may involve the pastor or it may not. We have had a lot of things happen to us as a congregation in 25 years, like ducks on the roof, and penguins running an EMR program. We bought a piano and our musicians played at a synod assembly. We have shared his love of the liturgy and of education. We even had tee shirts made for his St. John class. An example of what I am seeking happened this past Christmas Eve. Pastor Bastien was preparing to do his children’s sermon at the 7:00 p.m. service and the younger kids came forward, but so did Aaron and Bryan Eastlack and Erin Dodge. These “kids” came forward to be a part of Pastor Bastien’s last Christmas Eve. Memories are created by things large and small.

So please take the time to think about this and then send me whatever your heart and your head decide to write. Send any and all of your stories and remembrances to me, Steve Garvey at [email protected]. I thank you in advance.

Steve Garvey
