ess Message from the Principal

We have had a fantastically successful year and the students and staff of Temple Moor will be able to begin their summer break with an immense sense of achievement and pride. Earlier this term we received a national award from the SSAT in recognition of being in the top 20% of all schools across the country whose students have made outstanding progress. Our progress and success is not, however, confined to brilliant performance in exams. Our dance teams went to Blackpool for the National finals in June and once again performed brilliantly. The KS3 team were the highest placed in being 7th best in the country but all of the dancers were outstanding ambassadors of Temple Moor. The Year 11 Leavers’ Prom was a huge success in June. The atmosphere was wonderful, as was the standard of dress both in terms of the traditional gowns of the young women and the sharp suits of the young men. The Lower School Awards Evening in June was an outstanding success. Parents and families were able to celebrate the successes of Year 7 and 8 students along with the success of our Year 6 Primary School Sci-ence Award winners. The guest speaker Alastair Humphries was exceptional in motivating us all to be more adventurous. The music, drama and dance production evenings in July was exceptional. Students past and present came together, with music, to celebrate the talent and commitment of Chris Cook. The quality of each item was truly awe inspiring and was a fitting tribute to a gifted teacher and talented leader. My thanks for all he has done for the school and for inspiring so many young people throughout his career. The ‘A’ Level Art Exhibition in July was inspirational. The depth of the quality of the fine art work, sculpture and textile work was fantastic and it was a privilege to share it with parents, family and students alike. The ability to witness how the students have developed their final pieces through their work books added an extra dimension to the experience. The Year 7 Parents evening in July was a great success. Parents were able to experience a personal presentation by their son or daughter and the levels of understanding about the theme of heroes, the quality of the drawings showed that they had made significant progress over this last project. Over the last half term the PE faculty has continued to offer a wide range of extracurricular clubs for our students on both a participation and competitive level. Cricket has continued to thrive and has grown this season and is attended by both boys and girls thanks to ex England cricketer, Miss Petty, enthusing the girls to come to training sessions after school. The boys’ cricket continues to show positive signs with some outstanding players across a range of years. Ethan Parsons in Year 10 has been selected to play for York-shire B and there are a number of talented players emerging through the younger age groups. Year 10 were City champions last year and are still in the City Cup currently, as are Year 8. Athletics has gone from strength to strength this year. The Year 7 girls have had particular success in winning the Leeds City meeting. The summer term has also seen the culmination of a long hard football season that has yielded major success for two year groups. The Year 7 boys’ football team won the Leeds City Cup at the John Charles Centre for Sport under the leadership of Mr Murphy-King and Mr Murtagh. Following on from their cup final defeat last year the Year 8 boys tasted success by winning the East Leeds City League. Rugby continues to go from strength to strength in Temple Moor with success blossoming from a new source. Mr Richardson’s hard work in developing girls’ rugby has brought about a competition win for the Year 7 and 8 girls’ rugby team who won the city wide tournament. The Key Stage 4 girls’ team continues to develop and they have now begun to compete in contact tournaments against other schools.

WWI Battlefield Trip In April 42 Year 10 students and five members of staff set off for the battlefield sites of France and Belgium. Students had the opportunity to gain first hand experiences of going into trenches and exploring the tunnels as well as visiting war artefacts and memorabilia. Our students once again participated in the “Last Post” ceremony at the Menei Gate in Belgium where Amy Rhodes, Liam Ryde and Sam Austin laid a commemorative wreath on behalf of the school. It was a very humbling and moving experience for everyone present. Overall, an amazing cultural and educational opportunity for all those involved.

WWII Evacuation Experience Year 9 students benefited from a talk given by Mrs E Cousins who is a grandmother of one of our students.

She shared with them her first hand experiences of being evacuated from her home in Harehills, Leeds at the start of WWII. Students were enthralled by her talk of what life was like growing up at the start of WWII and gained an insight into what it was actually like from someone who had experienced evacuation. Mrs Cousins, a member of our community, very kindly gave up her time to share her stories. An excellent experience for our students and I am very grateful for her sharing her experiences with us.

ess Leeds Book Awards 2014

Once again Year 8 students from the library book group had the opportunity to visit the Civic Hall’s annual ceremony the Leeds Book Awards. The students thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and we had the opportunity to look after an author this time round. Gillian Cross, who is a very well known bestselling children’s author, was a pleasure to look after during the event. The students also bought books and got a few autographs while we were there too. Yorkshire Sculpture Park

On 26 June forty Year 10 Art students descended on the outstandingly beautiful Yorkshire Sculpture Park. On the day their behaviour and interaction with the environment was exemplary. After avoiding the sheep poo the students fully embraced the cultural experience, enthusiastically taking pictures, producing sketches and sampling the local cuisine - primarily sausage butties and chocolate muffins. Big thanks to Ms Wajdner, Ms Broome, Ms Lightfoot and Ms Anderson for their support during the visit.

End of Year Show Fine Art, Graphic Design and Textiles The culmination of up to two years hard work, creative thought and innovative practice by students was showcased at our annual Art Exhibition on Friday 4

July. This year’s exhibitors produced an extremely individual, unique body of work. The work on display ranged from the pure self expression of fine art students to the striking graphics and textile designs that show an awareness of how their ideas have a future commercial potential. Many of our departing Year 13s have gained places at various art colleges to become the future fashion designers, graphic artists and creative thinkers in industry. We would like to wish them and all our design students the very best for the future.

Product Design Students can now study A-level Product Design. As part of the course, students develop an understanding of; a broad range of materials; product life cycles; environmental sustainability of products and consumer safety. Students are given the opportunity to develop a body of coursework alongside an understanding of the processes and procedures of commercial production and manufacture. This year students have produced working MP3 docking stations for their coursework projects.

Aspirant Olympians Our aspirant Year 7 Olympians Liam Tindell, Kian Scales, Georgia Marshall and Melissa Booth all participated in an exciting event promoting the Commonwealth Games- the Queens baton relay at Headingley Stadium on Thursday 12 June. They got to show off their outstanding football, rugby and cricket skills whilst rubbing shoulders with some local heroes and international sports stars, for example Jonny Wainhouse from the Leeds Rhinos and twice world champion of Aikedo, Laura Beardsmore. They represented the school superbly and their talents shone through next to the other secondary schools in the city. A great way to start this fantastic summer of sport! Well done! Not to mention the BBC Radio Leeds appearances from Georgia, Kian and Liam!

U13 Merit League Final Temple Moor 1 - Cardinal Heenan 3

Fighting back from 2-0 down at half time, Temple Moor pushed to level the game after Callum Eddlestone slotted home. Unfortunately, fortune didn't favour the brave and Cardinal Heenan sealed the game as we pushed as hard as possible to try and score.

ess Three Peaks Conquered by Team

‘Up the Moor’ Twelve members of staff showed resilience, teamwork and responsibility and at the same time raised nearly £1000 for Dylexia Action when they undertook the Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks Challenge on 17 May 2014. Some of us are outdoorsy, some are not, some are sporty and some are not, some are young and some are not!!! However we knew that 'Together we can Achieve Success' and raise funds for a deserving cause that is so often still hidden away. The Walk—Despite a few minor problems before the big day the walk itself went surprisingly well. An early night meant the walk started at 6.10am from Chapel Le Dale. It was a glorious morning as we strode up Ingleborough and reached the summit in just under an hour. The steep part took a few by surprise, but spirits were high in the camp. Summit two of Penn y Ghent was reached in around 4.5 hours and despite being on target for 10.5 hours the odd one or two were beginning to feel it. However, the long stroll down to Ribblehead saw things pick up and the main group of nine took a well earned rest, before the long pull up Whernside. A breakaway group of three had already taken off at this point and were out of sight.

Upon reaching the final summit, after a two hour climb, it was noted that there was an outside chance, with 55 minutes remaining, that we could break the ten hour barrier. This was achieved with seconds to spare by five of the group running for the last 15 minutes. This resulted in times ranging from 9hrs 10 for the breakaway three to 9hrs 59 from the running pack of 5 to around 10hrs 10 for the four remaining. So a fantastic team effort that surpassed all expectations on a thoroughly exhausting yet rewarding and enjoyable weekend.

The Aftermath—A celebration drink was had back in Ingleton that evening and a safe journey and even safer fuel fill was had the next morning. A few aching limbs and blisters were mere honorary battle scars and the work of collecting in pledges began. As I write this we are at around 95% of the £1000 target and so well on our way to our target, with the ‘Dirty Dozen’ already considering next year’s options. Year 7 Football Cup Final Our Year 7 boys football team represented Temple Moor in the Cup Final at South Leeds Stadium and won 3:1. The teams were very evenly matched and in the first half, whilst there were several shots at goal, we struggled to hit the target. The opposition scored the first goal in the later stages of the first half, Temple Moor quickly evened the score from a penalty shot made by Kian Scales, unluckily he missed a second just before the half time whistle. The second half saw this young team with a determination and maturity beyond their years. They were relentless with their hunger to win the match and this paid off with further goals from Liam Tindal and Max Coates. However the second half was not all one sided, Temple Moor were great in defence and I feel a special mention needs to be made about Ajay Wilson in goal, who was not afraid to come off his line to take the ball and also made a superb and difficult save when the score was 1:1.

Tour De Temple Moor

The week leading up to the greatest cycling event on earth took place at Temple Moor on Stop the Clock Day Friday 20 June. All lessons were geared towards the Tour De France and all departments pulled some excellent sessions with our students. All of these activities inspired a

selection of our students to get involved with Bike 2 School week and register themselves on Bikeability courses which will be led

by Andrew Crossley from Leeds Carnegie on Monday 21 July in the summer holidays at Temple Moor High School.

Students who have been involved with these extra activities were given a free breakfast for their hard work at the end of the week and entered into a prize draw for some VIP tickets to watch the Grand Depart leave our very own Leeds City Centre. The lucky winners were Jamie Hollis (Y7), Aiden Clarke (Y7) and Harry Armitage (Y9) who were taken by Mr Richardson to watch the world's best cyclists take off from a front row viewing position on the Headrow - an experience of a lifetime! Well done to all students who have participated with such enthusiasm during our school's celebrations of the Tour De France. Keeeeep cycling!!

National Schools Street Dance Final On Saturday 14 June the Performance department took three teams to perform in the National Schools Street Dance Final at Blackpool Winter Gardens. All students, ranging from Year 8 to 13, performed with energy and confidence and demonstrated an unrivalled passion and dedication for Dance throughout the day. Despite the competition seeming tougher than ever, the KS3 team were lucky enough to be placed 7th in their category. We are very proud of all the girls for their hard work and dedication.

Primary Trust Athletics The annual Trust Athletics competition took the Temple Moor High School field by storm yet again in a fantastic display of sporting prowess from our primary schools! To kick off on Monday 30 June our Year 12 BTEC Sport students organised the events for KS2- special mention to Esther Jones for her confident announcing skills and excellent leadership qualities! Monday 7 July saw our Y10 BTEC Sport students slightly more out of their comfort zones but all the same showing off their Sports Leadership talent and pulling off another exceptional set of events for the Foundation and KS1 year groups. Other special thank yous go to Jodi Hodgson, Rochelle Petty, Gemma Sargeant and all Trust members for helping and supporting me on the day in yet another successful event for our Trust.
