Positive youth development is the idea that young people are vital resources in our community, with tremendous assets and potential to be developed. The past few months have been such a wonderful time of seeing the positive youth development that occurs in Charles County 4-H. I spent the weekend of June 1-2 at the Charles County Spring Show, watching dozens of youth ranging in age from 8-18 showing various species of livestock. During these two days, I saw an amazing group of youth who were learning and practicing vital life skills. Each of these young people demonstrated incredible levels of responsibility as they have worked with their animals from birth to the present (depending on the species the time invested can range from 5 to 12 months). The ability to control their often very independent minded livestock is a true testament to the countless hours they invest in caring for, and training these animals. Prior to the show, they practice animal science knowledge, they care for the animals being cognizant of the best feeds and cleaning products. In the show ring, they demonstrate strong communication skills as they are required to follow the judge’s directions, and answer his/her inquiries about their animal and its care regimen. Finally, they are required to practice recordkeeping as they create and submit record books to document this process—a skill necessary in every facet of life. It is amazing to see the dedication of our club leaders, and the impact that dedication has on the youth in their clubs. I’ve seen birdhouse creations, Father’s Day gift production, painted tree cookies and rocks at La Plata’s Artfest, and a beautiful 4-H parade float at the Cobb Island Day Celebration. Our young people are doing amazing things with the help and support of awesome club leaders.

4-H exists to facilitate positive youth development. What is positive youth development?

Positive youth development is the idea that young people are vital resources in our community, with

tremendous assets and potential to be developed.

The past few months have been such a wonderful time of seeing the positive youth development that

occurs in Charles County 4-H. I spent the weekend of June 1-2 at the Charles County Spring Show,

watching dozens of youth ranging in age from 8-18 showing various species of livestock. During these

two days, I saw an amazing group of youth who were learning and practicing vital life skills. Each of

these young people demonstrated incredible levels of responsibility as they have worked with their

animals from birth to the present (depending on the species the time invested can range from 5 to 12

months). The ability to control their often very independent minded livestock is a true testament to the

countless hours they invest in caring for, and training these animals. Prior to the show, they practice

animal science knowledge, they care for the animals being cognizant of the best feeds and cleaning

products. In the show ring, they demonstrate strong communication skills as they are required to follow

the judge’s directions, and answer his/her inquiries about their animal and its care regimen. Finally, they

are required to practice recordkeeping as they create and submit record books to document this

process—a skill necessary in every facet of life.

The Dog Show The Swine Competition

I’ve also had the opportunity to visit our community clubs. It is amazing to see the dedication of our club

leaders, and the impact that dedication has on the youth in their clubs. I’ve seen birdhouse creations,

Father’s Day gift production, painted tree cookies and rocks at La Plata’s Artfest, and a beautiful 4-H

parade float at the Cobb Island Day Celebration. Our young people are doing amazing things with the

help and support of awesome club leaders.

As I write this, we have just finished a week of day camp at the Charles County Fairgrounds. Again, I was

so impressed by our youth participants, our dedicated volunteers, and amazing staff. I am honored to

work alongside so many wonderful folks. What impressed me most about Day Camp was seeing our

teen leaders embrace their roles as mentors for the younger campers. They did such a great job

transitioning from being young campers shepherded by experienced leaders to becoming those very

shepherds guiding the next group through the 4-H camp experience. I was also humbled to serve

alongside the volunteers who give so generously of their time to support positive youth development. A

full list of thank you’s appears later in the newsletter. Please take a moment to look it over and

acknowledge these folks when you next see them. 4-H could not accomplish its mission without this

dedicated group. We are very fortunate.

Finally, a huge thank you to

the 4-H staff that works

tirelessly to ensure that we

provide positive experiences

for the youth in our

community. Bonnie Boyden

has spent decades developing

relationships and a teen

leadership training program.

It was awesome to see it

come to fruition during Day

Camp. Jeanne Williams puts

in tons of hours behind the

scenes coordinating shooting

sports and livestock

instructors and finalizing class

schedules and rosters for Day

Camp. Darby D’Ambrosio is

quick to offer support

wherever she can; continually

running here and there to pick

up and deliver camp supplies,

when she isn’t busy

facilitating robotics or

teaching cooking classes at

Day Camp. Donna Mohler transitions seamlessly from volunteer to staff as she checks campers in and

out each day, and then moves inside to teach crafting with her mother. Finally, we must thank Suzanne

Stuart who stayed at the office to hold down the fort while the remainder of us were at camp.

I am so proud to be a part of 4-H. Seeing young people have the opportunity to shine in various settings

is an awesome privilege. Kudos to all of you youth for working so hard day in and day out to make the

best better, parents and volunteers for dedicating your time, expertise, and love to the children in this

program. We often hear it said that it takes a village to raise a child. Here in 4-H we experience the

village at its best. Parents devote time and resources to support their child’s interest. Volunteers share

their expertise in workshops designed to educate the youth, and take time to give one-on-one feedback

during practice rounds and even official events.

I encourage each and every one of you to come out to the culminating events for each of our programs—

see the results of the village at work; youth and adults working hand-in-hand to make the best better.

Your child might only be interested in showing pigs, but I would encourage you and them to come

support their fellow 4-Hers who participate in robotics or sewing; and vice versa.
