** Monthly meetings ‐ Because we are using an outside caterer for our meals at meetings, we are being charged based on the number of dinners ordered. We order based on the number of reservations received.
Unfortunately, if you reserved and are a “no‐show” you may be billed the $15.00 charge for the meal and we would ask that you honor your reservation for the meal.

Potentate’s Message June, 2007 I want to begin by saying thank you to all the Nobility and their Ladies for the hard work put forth to make both the Sphinx Reception and the Spring Ceremonial events that were a smashing success! The reception is something Linda and I will never forget. Traditional Sphinx hospitality was on display for all to see. The positive comments Linda and I received were certainly a credit to all at Sphinx Shrine. Best of all, everyone had a great time and the 2007 Northeast Mascot ‐ the Skunk ‐ along with the Funsters, had fun and frivolity raising $1500.00 for the Sneaker Fund, all for burns research! I must comment on what a great job our Ceremonial Masters did putting together our Spring Ceremonial on June 2nd. Once again, good old Sphinx
hospitality was evident as we brought in 15 new Nobles. The day started off with a trip to the hospital for the New Nobles and their Ladies and ended with our entire Shrine Center making the new Nobles feel comfortable in their new Fraternal home. Membership has come along way this year. Not only have we brought in 15 new Nobles, but there have been no demits and we have reinstated several Nobles. My hat is off to our Member‐ship/Public Relations Unit for a great job so far. To the Units and Clubs—Don’t forget to get your information to our Webmaster, so he can get the word out on what you have planned. Our website is there for your use, so be sure to visit www.sphinxshrine.org. In addition, our Email newsletter is to up to over 250 recipients and growing strong! Don’t forget to sign up if you haven’t already! As I finish writing this message, I have had a chance to reflect on Grand Masters’ Day. I want the Nobility to know that it was a honor to represent them on Saturday, June 9th as I presented Grand Master William Greene his Fez and then was able to make Prince Hall Grand Master Bro. Floyd Bagwell an honorary member of Sphinx Shrine and present him with his own Sphinx Grand Masters’ Fez. They are truly both wonderful peo‐ple and Brothers who certainly give credit to our Fraternity! We are getting ready to leave for the Imperial Session in Anaheim and are looking forward to some fun in the sun. This year has been flying by, but there is still much work to be done and fun to be had. Don’t forget to sign up for Hanover, Virginia Beach and Washington, DC. Seeing The End Result A Remarkable Shrine Hospital Success Story... The guest speaker at our June 20th monthly meeting was Debra Latour, an Occupational Therapist for the past 8 years at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Springfield, Mass. Debra was accompanied by her husband, Michael, on her visit to Sphinx and got acquainted with many of those present at the dinner before the meeting. She is no stranger to physical chal‐lenges, being born with a congenital limb deficiency, missing her right arm below the elbow. Beginning her after‐dinner presentation, Debra described her duties at the Hospital and commented that Shriners rarely get to see the success stories of how patients, as children, eventu‐ally turn out as adults. As she presented the case history of one long‐term success story from Springfield, it became evident to the captivated audience that the story was, in fact, her own. Debra, now 50, started as a patient at Springfield at the age of 3 months. She was fitted with the very first prosthetic device of its kind at the age of 18 months and her case study detailed all of the challenges that such a condition presents. Of course, after meeting Debra, it is evident that she does NOT like the term “disability” because she does not accept her condition as disabling! One of Debra’s remarkable accomplishments, through her work and personal experience, has been to design a new prosthetic device and attachment to greatly enhance the lives of children and adults with similar conditions. She calls this attachment “The Anchor” and it has been patented, with the rights to it assigned to the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital charities. Debra is a shining example of someone giving back to the Shriner’s Hospital for all that they did for her. Meeting with her for just a few minutes is all the proof we need that success stories from Shriner’s Hospitals do exist!

More Fun = More Money for the Kids! At our June 20th Monthly Meeting, Potentate Ed Pahl started off by reporting the “Parking Police” had caught a suspected violator (with photographic evidence) parking in the Pote’s designated parking space. Turned out the violator was out 1st Ceremonial Master, Jean Maheu, which cost him a fine of $20. However, High Priest & Prophet, Dave McDonough, determined that “snitches” should be fined as well, which cost the Pote a $10 fine of his own! All fines, of course, were turned over immediately to Stanley Warner of the Funsters to go into the Sneaker Fund. The Pote reiterated Sphinx Shrine’s ongoing de‐sire to help the Funsters achieve their goal this year of raising $5,000 for the Sneaker Fund, which benefits Shriners Burns Hospitals. When that goal is reached, 2nd Ceremonial Master Howard Pinkham, has agreed to shave his head! The Pote further reported the following items: • The recent Paper Drive on June 16th had gained over $1400
in collected donations outside of Lowe’s and Sam’s Club. • Sphinx had just received a $2500 check from the town of
Newington for Sphinx Shrine marching in the town’s Memorial Day Parade.
• The Chanters had donated $1500 to go to the “kids” at the Springfield Hospital.
• Sphinx had receive an official plaque from the Funsters for their previous $5000 to the Sneaker Fund.

3 Parts to Sphinx Communications 1. New and improved website.
Get us your long‐term information—things about your units and clubs that tell the story of what you do. Info in the website should be more long‐term in nature. For example ‐ who your officers are, what your unit or club does, when they meet, etc.
2. Improved and concise “Booster.” NOTE! Units and clubs have fallen out of the habit of getting their info into the Booster! We need your arti‐cles! Get us your info for the upcoming months that the Booster is about to cover. This can be information about upcoming events, news of recent events, etc.
3. E‐mail Newsletter. We continue to issue regular weekly Sphinx E‐mail newsletters. If you are not al‐ready getting them, be sure to go to the main page of the Sphinx Website. You’ll see the link to “subscribe” to the Sphinx e‐mail newsletter in our Sphinx Website. These email newsletters are for general Shrine info, but can also be used by units and clubs to help broadcast reminders for their upcoming events. Information in these should be for current, upcoming events .
Remember—to ALL the units, clubs and ALL Nobility... PLEASE… use all 3 of these! They are here to offer better communications within the organization and about Sphinx Shrine in general! GET THE WORD OUT!

Sphinx Phonebook Project Sphinx Shrine is developing the first issue of the Sphinx Shriners Newington Phone Book, as a community service. It is a professionally‐created and printed mini phone book to make finding phone numbers in the Newington community much easier! More importantly, it is being used as our major fund‐raising project for this year, and in years to come. With a minimal amount of effort is selling ad space, we can expect to net over $20,000 for Sphinx Shrine!
Nobles... How can you
help? Everyone in the immediate Newington area knows a handful of local business people. We’re not looking for people to go out “knocking on doors.” What we need is everyone in the Newington area to think of 4‐6 local business people they already know and tell them the story of our new, highly effective phone book due to come out in the Fall! If we can get 50 Nobles to each get 2 ads for the phone book, it will be a huge success! Please “stay tuned” in July… there will be more information coming out as to how you can help! We will have information posted on the website as well. In the meantime, you can contact the following for more information:

SOME GOOD CHEROKEE ADVISE
Two Wolves One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two 'wolves' inside us all. One is “Evil.”
It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self‐pity, guilt, resentment inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other is “Good.” It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
TWO BOXES FROM THE “GREAT SPIRIT” You are given two boxes to hold, with the following instructions. "Store all your sorrows in the black box and all your joys in the gold one." When you follow these instructions, the gold box becomes heavier each day, the black box in stays as light as it was before. If you wonder how this can be, then with curiosity getting the best of you, you open the black box. You will see, in the base of the box, a hole, which allows your sorrows fall from the box into the “Great Spirits” hands. If you were to ask the “Great Spirit” why the two boxes he would tell you it helps you to feed the winning wolf, and to count your many blessings. May peace break into you house and may thieves come to steal you debts and sorrows, may your clothes smell of success like the smoking fires and may your problems forget your home ad‐dress.

Sad news… Funster Forever It is with great sadness that we report the loss of a beloved Brother and fellow “Joey.” The Black Camel has taken Lloyd H. "Tater" Cliff from our mortal sights on May 17, 2007. Lloyd was an active mem‐ber of Composite Lodge AF & AM #28, of Suffield, CT and a Sphinx Shrine Funster since November 1984. He was also a member of the Winding Road Antique Auto Club.
At Lloyds' wake, the Funsters were told by one of his daughters, that when he was in the hospital for the last time, the staff had asked what he did for a living. He told them he was a clown. He never told them he was a welder. Clowning meant so much to him in his later years, that was how he saw himself. He will be missed by all.

Old Shriners
Old Shriners are easy to Spot: At sporting events, during the play of the National Anthem, Old Shriners hold their caps over their hearts and sing with‐out embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Shriners remember World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy, and Hit‐ler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Jet Age, and the Moon Landing, not to mention Viet Nam. If you bump into an Old Shriner on the sidewalk, he will apologize. If you pass an Old Shriner on the street he will nod or tip his cap to a Lady. Old Shriners trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old Shriners hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make sure the Lady is on the inside for protection. Old Shriners get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don’t like filth on TV or in mov‐ies. Old Shriners have Moral Courage. They seldom brag unless it about their grandchildren. It’s Old Shriners who know our great country is protected, not by politicians or police, but by our Lord and the young men and women in the military, serving their country. This country needs Old Shriners with their decent values. We need them now more than ever. Thank God for Old Shriners.

SPHINX CARAVAN SHRINE CLUB
The Sphinx Caravan Shrine Club welcomes our newest member: Earl Korngiebel, Past Potentate of Pyramid Shriners and a duel Sphinx Shrine member. Ill. Sir Earl joined the club at our March meeting. At this time, the Club would also like to welcome the 2007 Spring Shrine Class of candidates as they become Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. It is our hope that they en‐joyed the Ceremonial and that they would seriously con‐sider joining a Unit, or Club, within Sphinx Shrine. For it is only through participation that one realizes the full enjoy‐ment of the Shrine fraternity, and the philanthropy that it serves, namely the support of helping children. The Caravan Shrine Club, at our last meeting, contin‐ued to support the activities of Sphinx Shrine by purchas‐ing a Sphinx Golf Tournament Flag in support of the Sphinx Transportation Fund. The Club also voted to con‐tribute part of the proceeds from our 50/50 monthly meeting raffle, to be placed into a restricted fund, which will eventually be turned over to the Sphinx Shrine Funster’s Sneaker Fund whose proceeds annually are given to the Shrine Boston Burns Center. As for upcoming meetings we will meet at the New Deal Steak House, Westbrook, in May and will be ventur‐ing to the 95 Gathering Place, Wallingford, in June. The June meeting however has been moved up one week to June 6th per permission of the Potentate. After a July break, the Club will hold its August meeting at Angelico’s Lakehouse Restaurant, in East Hampton, for its 3rd Annual Barbeque outing. As always, we ask that if you are interested in becom‐ing a member of the Caravan Shrine Club; or would like to check our club out; or perhaps you and your lady would like meet with fellow Nobles and their ladies over dinner, please feel free to join us at one of our meetings (with no obligation on your part to join us), by contacting me at (203) 265‐1801, or via e‐mail: [email protected], or by contacting any other Club officer for more informa‐tion. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, at various restaurants usually in the Middlesex County, but not limited to that area with the Potentate’s permission. The reason for this move to restaurants outside our area on occasion is that our membership list consists of Sphinx members from all over the state, not just the Middlesex County. David R. SHRINERS… SPHINX IS OUR “HOME!” Know a new Shriner? Know a Shriner who hasn’t been very active? Maybe we didn’t do a good enough job of making them feel at home. Don’t let that happen!

Wow! The year is half over already. Where has the time gone? It has been a good six months, with all the events so far this year being well‐attended. Congratulations to all the new Nobles that just went through the Ceremonial. I hope you have a long and fun filled life as a Shriner. You toured the Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield so you now have an idea of what it is all about ‐ “Having Fun and Helping Kids!” My suggestion is to do some research and then join a Unit and Shrine Club to get the most out of the Shrine. I know that everyone is tired of hearing about it ‐ MEMBERSHIP! But it is something we all have to be aware of. Now that the Spring Ceremonial is over, we still need new members. We have a Fall Ceremonial scheduled for December 1, 2007, and we need candidates to go through it. To quote Illustrious Sir Ed, if each Unit and Club had one new candidate we would have at least thirty new Nobles for the upcoming Ceremonial.
On August 18, 2007 The Arabian Shrine Club will hold it’s annual Walk for Kids at Platt High School in Meriden. Our Potentate has committed Sphinx Shrine to be involved in the Walk this year as an official Sphinx event. He is asking all the Units and Clubs get involved. For eight years, the Sphinx Arabian Club has averaged over $10,000 for the Hospital! Just imagine what the whole Shrine can raise. LETS ALL GET INVOLVED! ARE YOUR DUES PAID? we still have about 150 Nobles that have not paid their dues. That adds up to over $17,000 that your Shrine center is short. It’s hard to pay the bills when the money is not coming in. If you have just forgotten, please write a check soon. If you are having a problem paying your dues, please call the office and we will try to help. Thank you. Lets keep having fun! Robert N. Gimbel Recorder

May 25, 2007 Hi Ill. Sir Ed, Well, it is Memorial Day weekend and we should all take a little time to honor those who are keeping us a Free Coun‐try. Many have died to protect our rights, and many more are serving for us. Hopefully, you and your Lady Linda will have a pleas‐ant weekend. The Indy 500 is on, the Nascar Series will follow and the Red Sox will be playing somewhere. Many of you may even take some time to go golfing, fishing or being with the Family. Most important the Family. Just a little note from Megan Johnson who was at our last Imperial Council Session in Tampa, whom we also saw in Hono‐lulu. She is sure getting around the Shrine circuit on a regular basis. She is really being a great PR person...
Hi Mr. Sembs!!! I was just wanting to tell you how much I LOVED my trip to Tampa. I FINALLY got to see the Headquarters. It was so emotional for me. I even went back to take pictures at 5:00 a.m. on my way to the airport. I almost cried just seeing all the Shrine Temples names and when they started. I looked up all the ones I had visited. It was just so cool!!!! I loved the memory room. I could have stayed in there for hours just looking at it all. So many wonderful people come together to make it all happen. I met some of those wonderful people at the PR presentation. I didn't do so well on the piano that day, but everyone was very forgiving and clapped anyway. That's one thing about Shriners...they love you even though you aren't perfect!!!! I even got invited to a couple of Shrine Centers while I was there. I will be going to Birmingham next week‐end. I get to play the piano for Tad (the Shrine patient that plays the cello with his foot). I have always wanted to meet him. I just admire him so much. We have talked on the phone some and he is just an incredible musician. I am still so happy about seeing all of you in Hawaii. What a wonderful time for me...mainly because I got to be with Shriners!!! When they asked me what I want to do there, I told them I just want to visit with Shriners!!!!! The day after I got home, I left for Ft. Worth, TX. That was another incredible trip. I tell ya, Shriners sure know how to make you feel special. What fantastic people!!!! Well, please tell your wife "Hi" for me. She is a very nice person and my mom sure enjoyed talking with her during lunch. I hope I get to see you all again in Anaheim. I am not sure I am going to be able to wait until July....I am excited beyond words!!!! Thanks for being a Shriner!!! Your "1" Fan!!! Megan, aka, Shriner Kid
Anyway, things like this make all the time we spend working for our children and hospitals very worthwhile. The PGA Tour event in Las Vegas is coming along very well. I hope that we can get many of you to help with getting major sponsors for this event. We only have about 4 months before the event takes place. Any help or questions, please let me know and I will get Gene Bracewell to assist. Gary Davis from Las Vegas is putting his heart and soul into making sure that it will be very successful. If many of our Shriners can get to Las Vegas on for this event, that would be great. We want to see a “SEA” of Fezzes on the course. The dates for this Pro Am Format is October 8th thru the 14th. The East West is taking a final shape as well. Dale Stauss has affirmed with me that the game on Saturday will be held at the University of Houston, a stadium that holds 30,000 fans. This will really help in making it a bit easier to fill the seats. Hopefully, many of you Potentates are planning to attend and enjoy the festivities of this FANTASTIC event. After dinner we'll stop on the National Capital Mall at the World War II Memorial. SATURDAY ‐ DEC. 8 ‐ A BIG BREAKFAST BUFFET is included each morning in the stately Two Continents Dining Room at hotel, complete with ice carvings and many hot breakfast choices. Today a local guide will lead a holiday tour in downtown Washington. Featured will be The White House Traditions tour, the Pageant of Peace and a look at the National Christmas Tree on the White House lawn. You'll learn all about Christmas at the White House and visit St. Johns Church of the Presi‐dents on Lafayette Square. We'll also visit the George Washington Masonic Memorial and Tower in colonial Alexandria, VA as well as the colorful ceremony of the Changing of the Guard at the Tombs of the Unknown Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. At Arlington we'll include the Tour‐mobile ride through the Cemetery. Tonight, dinner is on your own at one of the many fine restaurants in the city including one right in our hotel and the famous Ebbit's Grill is just up the street. From the Hotel Washington you can walk over to the White House and admire the beautiful National Christmas Tree ablaze with colored lights after dark. SUNDAY ‐ DEC. 9 ‐ A BIG SUNDAY BREAKFAST is again included at the hotel and this morning we will provide transportation for those who would like to attend Sunday services at the Washington National Cathedral or Sf. Matthew's Cathedral, two of the most famous churches in the nation. Our Spring Ceremonial was declared a rousing success by Potentate Ed Pahl as he wel‐comed our newest Nobles to Sphinx. He singled out our Ceremonial Masters, Jean Maheu and Howard Pinkham, as well as the entire Ritual Cast, for a great ceremony.
The day started with a visit to our Springfield Hospital, and the afternoon was made com‐plete with assistance from the Band, the Chanters, the High‐landers and the Legion of Honor. All of the units made presentations and many of the new Nobles joined units right away.
