Birmingham Public Schools 2015 Bond Program Monthly Construction Update July 2016 Brief Project Description On June 20, 2016 construction began at several buildings for the 2015 Bond Program. The scope of work includes new secured entries at Beverly, Bingham Farms, Greenfield, Harlan, Pembroke, Pierce, Quarton and Birmingham Covington. All existing unit ventilators are being replaced along with the existing temperature controls at Pierce. A few other projects at Pierce include updating the softball field and replacing the door system off Pierce Street. New lockers are being installed at Covington. Fuel pumps have been replaced at the Transportation building. The boilers and domestic water heaters are being replaced at Groves and the pool locker rooms have received new epoxy flooring. Lastly at Seaholm and Groves new scoreboards will be installed for the football and varsity baseball and softball fields, and the tennis courts are being repaved and resurfaced. Construction Schedule Update Inspections will be scheduled for the week of 8/29. Groves At the tennis courts, fencing is ongoing and expected to be complete on or before 8/10. Birmingham Public Schools 2015 Bond Program Monthly Construction Update 

July 2016  

Brief Project Description 

 On June 20, 2016 construction began at several buildings for the 2015 Bond Program.  The scope of work 

includes new secured entries at Beverly, Bingham Farms, Greenfield, Harlan, Pembroke, Pierce, Quarton 

and  Birmingham  Covington.    All  existing  unit  ventilators  are  being  replaced  along with  the  existing 

temperature controls at Pierce.   A  few other projects at Pierce  include updating  the softball  field and 

replacing the door system off Pierce Street.  New lockers are being installed at Covington.  Fuel pumps 

have been replaced at the Transportation building.   The boilers and domestic water heaters are being 

replaced at Groves and the pool locker rooms have received new epoxy flooring.  Lastly at Seaholm and 

Groves new scoreboards will be installed for the football and varsity baseball and softball fields, and the 

tennis courts are being repaved and resurfaced.  

 

Construction Schedule Update 

Inspections will be scheduled for the week of 8/29. 

Groves  

At the tennis courts, fencing is ongoing and expected to be complete on or before 8/10. 

Acrylic coating and striping is starting following the fencing and will take roughly one‐week 

weather depending.  

Tennis courts should be ready for use by 8/22 at the latest.  

Domestic hot water replacement is almost complete, hot water is scheduled to be back on by 

8/8. 

Piping is ongoing for the boiler replacement. 

The epoxy floor in the locker rooms is completed, ready for punchlist. 

 

Pierce Unit Ventilators 

Temperature controls are approximately 70% complete.  Unit ventilators and louvers are all on 

site. 

Piping unit ventilators began on Saturday 7/30 and the unit ventilator installation is on track to 

be completed by 8/12. 

Start‐up, Controls, testing and balancing of the unit ventilators will begin on 8/15. 

Counter tops in the classrooms will begin being installed following the completion of the unit 

ventilators the week of 8/15. 

 

Secured Entries 

Drywall finishing at all of the secured entries will be complete by 8/5.  

Painting is ongoing and is scheduled to be complete next week.   

  

 

Reworking ceiling grid/tile will begin this week.  

Aluminum framed entrances will be installed this week at Beverly and Pembroke.   

Hollow metal doors and frames have all been installed. 

Door hardware and access control installation is approximately 80% complete. 

FRP doors and frames for Covington, Quarton and Harlan will be delivered and installed the 

week of 8/8. 

FRP doors and frames for Greenfield and Pierce will be delivered and installed the week of 8/29. 

Existing casework has been installed.  Millwork should be installed week of 8/8 and casework 

will be delivered and installed week of 8/22. 

Owner installed floor covering can begin at all of the schools the week of 8/8. 

Miscellaneous Projects 

Transportation Fuel Pumps are completed, ready for punchlist scheduled on 8/3. 

Seaholm Tennis Courts are completed. Waiting on bangboards to be delivered in approximately 

2 weeks. 

Electrical boring for the football scoreboards started last week and is ongoing.  

Demo of the existing beams and scoreboards, and pouring concrete for new beams next week.  

Scoreboards are shipping 8/4 and the new beams will be delivered and installed the week of 

8/15.   

Locker installation at Covington is on track to be completed this week. 

Translucent panels in Bingham Farms Multipurpose room have been completed. 

 

Safety 

All contractors will go through Clark Construction Company’s site specific safety orientation 

before beginning work on site.  To date over 100 contractors have been through orientation. 

Hard hats, safety glasses and safety vests will be required 100% of the time on site.  

Clark’s BRAVO program (Being Resistant Against Violations Openly) is being utilized on this 

project.  This program is to ensure everyone has their eyes open to potential safety hazards and 

is looking out for one another. 

Clark has set this project up with a MIOSHA SET Alliance.  

There have been 5,280 trade hours worked to date with no safety incidents.
