Dear Residents of Doddington

July is a busy month in Doddington; the Carnival and Sports day is first on Saturday 6th July with a spectacle of amazing floats and entertainers parading through the village followed by a fun Sports Afternoon at Benwick Road Recreation Ground where children and adults can take part in competitive races, enjoy the many stalls and consume delicious food and drinks from the refreshment stalls and BBQ. Please keep an eye out for road closure information.

On Saturday 27th July the Doddington Village Summer Show opens its doors at the Village Hall showcasing all the many talents that Doddington and the surrounding area have. The Show is open to everyone to enter and is great fun, with a chance to win a cash prize or even a trophy!

In order for these events to take place each year they require a lot of hard work and organisation from dedicated volunteers which can be made easier if more people were to help. If you feel you would like to get involved and have a little time to spare, please talk to the volunteers at the event, they will be happy to point you in the right direction. Helping to organise an event is not the only way you can contribute, joining in or entering a competition is a great way of supporting the committees and you may even have fun too!

The Doddington Diary Team wish you a happy and safe July and hope you enjoy all that Doddington has to offer!

Best wishesThe Doddington Diary Team

The annual Village Yard Sale was well supported with over 40 pitches booked, however the weather was against us on the day, with gusty wind and a heavy downpour making it impossible for some people to set up outside. The stalls which did go ahead made a little profit, so thank you to everyone who did brave the weather! Next year, we plan to hold the Yard Sale on both Saturday and Sunday of the 2nd weekend in June in order to maximise your sales....let’s hope the weather is kinder! If anyone is interested in holding another yard sale at the end of the summer, please contact us. If we receive enough interest we will organise it. Please telephone David, 740684 for more details.

The garden near the flag pole on Benwick Road which has been planted with summer bedding plants is now blazing with colour. The area on the cut through between Bevills Close and Ingles Lane has enjoyed the warm wet weather and is well established. The next project will be the flower bed near the Doddington sign. We would again like to thank Delfland Nurseries for their continued support and generosity with the donation of plants

Doddington Village Sports and Carinval

July is finally here! The bunting is now up and we are all set for the big day. We hope to see the whole village turn out for the Carnival on Saturday 6th July.

As usual, there will be road closures in place in the morning - please refer to the leaflet that has been circulated to all the residents for details.

Don’t forget to line the streets to cheer on the procession and then head down to the pavillion sports field from 1.30pm for a fun filled afternoon! Raffle tickets will be on sale throughout the day.

We all want the Carnival to continue here in Doddington but without volunteers the day would not be possible. Your Carnival NEEDS you! If you are able to help out on 6th July, for a few hours or all day, please get in touch via our Facebook page Doddington Village Sports and Carnival Committee or via the website www.doddingtoncarnival.co.uk. Please come forward to secure the future of our Carnival.

JUNE BULLETIN FROM CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

Think twice before jumping into water this summer Would you jump into a river, lake or any other open waterway on a hot sunny day? Do you know what hazards lie beneath the water? Or how cold the water is? Your fire service has pledged to deliver water safety education to every school in Cambridge-shire following the tragic death of a teenage boy last summer. But there is only so much we can do and we’re calling on parents, carers and peers to talk each other about water safety. Some things to remember: You do not know what hazards lie beneath the surface of rivers, lakes, canals, etc. Strong undercurrents can be tough to conquer, even if you know how to swim

Cambridgeshire’s waterways are cold – even on the hottest days of the year – and this has a dramatic effect on your body’s ability to swim and get yourself out of trouble, should you get stuck. If someone is in trouble, call 999 immediately. Do not hesitate to call the emergency services and give clear details of your location.

For the latest news, incidents and safety advice, or to contact us, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk . Find us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Call 01480 444500 for enquiries.

Sally Shortland welcomed members and two visitors to the June meeting. Sally thanked members for their work in making the Plant Sale successful. Various news items and invitations were noted. Names were taken for bakers and helpers for the Carnival refreshments. Members were asked for suggestions for continuing the Centenery celebrations. There was a demonstration of cupcakes in a microwave given by Pat Bernacki. Pat made Nutella, blueberry and apple crumble puddings which were then tasted by everyone.Refreshments were served by Sally Graham and Mary Woolfall. A food and drink quiz was held with Margaret Neesom winning a box of sweets. The monthly competition for a house plant was won by Margaret Neesom and Janine Woodhams with 20 points each. There were five raffle winners.Next month’s meeting will be in Gemma Watts’ garden, weather permitting, and garden games will be played. The competition will be ‘Q’ for Queen. Visitors will be very welcome, ring Gemma Watts for details (740751).

Cricket season is in full flow at the Pavilion, every Saturday and every other Sunday throughout July and August. Spectators are encouraged, so please feel free to take a picnic and something cold to drink and enjoy a lazy weekend afternoon watching cricket. We are pleased to say that Doddington United have registered with Cambs Football Association and will again be playing at the Ground from September. The field is in excellent condition, the club has brand new nets and with support from Stainless Metalcraft there is a shiny new boot scraper, we look forward to welcoming the team back. The outdoor stores are currently receiving a makeover with the old wooden doors being replaced by maintenance free recycled plastic doors. The material is the same that was used to replace the gable end last year and really smartens up the Pavilion. Funding was received from Ransonmoor Community Windfarm Fund to make this improvement possible.Next month’s Bingo will take place on Thursday 11th July at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome to come along. Last month’s 100 Club lottery winners were; M Pooley, K Smith, L Lomax, R Hufton, A Short.Tickets are still available for our History evening with David Edwards; Who Was Lionel Walden? Doddington Diary July 2019

Doddington Parish Council Annual ReportThe Parish Council has had a busy and very productive year and I am very pleased to report that once again we applied for a further funding via the Cambs County Council Highways Improvement Scheme, so that we could complete the improvement of the footpath in Benwick Road. We were delighted to be awarded the funding so that the footpath will be made safe for its many users.

We have taken on the responsibility for cutting the grass, and shrubs on the cut through between Wood Street and Cedar Avenue, as Fenland District Council were unwilling to do this. We do not have unlimited means to be able to take on extra work like this, but we do strive to cover as much as possible so that our village continues to look as good as we can make it. We have reduced the height of the trees along the side of Abbey Field which overlooks the houses on Holly Drive, Cypress Close and parts of Cedar Avenue and Beech Avenue, so that residents get more sunlight into their gardens.

We are delighted that our two garden angels are still hard at work in the village, keeping many areas beautifully tidy and full of colourful plants .They also have plans to make a new flower bed in front of the village sign. We thank Delfland Nurseries for their very kind donation of the plants that are used. Thanks to Jane, and Alan for their sterling work in what were previously unloved spaces. On that subject, a number of villagers have offered help in keeping other areas in the village tidy and up to scratch. We are fortunate in having these unsung helpers, and it is good to know that people care enough to give their time like that. Thanks to all of you.

We have at last had the Parish owned street lights replaced/repaired with LED lights and these are now our responsibility. By taking these lights into our care, we have saved circa £29,000 which we would have had to pay, had we remained with FDC. We will now pick up the cost of the power to these lights, but have put contingency plans in place for this in our new budget.

Any Parish lights which are not working should be reported to the Parish Clerk or any of our Parish Councillors, making sure that you give the number from the lamp post. Our lights will be easily identified once they are in place, by new white stickers which give the number of the light and the email address of the Parish Council. This will mean that we will be able to identify our Parish lights from those owned by FDC and CCC.

Doddington has been very lucky to be the recipient of a new village sign, which proudly stands at Policeman’s Corner. We thank the WI for their generosity in providing this for us, and we promise to take good care of it. The old sign, which gave so much good service, has been donated to the museum in March, where it will hopefully benefit from being inside and away from the elements.

We commissioned seating for the bus shelters at the top of Benwick Road and on

Doddington Diary July 2019

Doddington Parish Council Annual Reportthe High Street, which have been much used. Our thanks to Colin Cousins, who kindly made these for us.

Our Street Pride Group are keeping the village tidy, and I won’t steal their thunder, but would just say that some sterling work has been done to the pond at Primrose Hill !

To attempt to quell some of the rumours that have been flying around the village, the Parish Council are in regular contact with the owners of the village pond on Wimblington Road, and are trying really hard to get it re-vitalised and hopefully maintained by the village Street Pride Group in the future. This is not progressing as fast as we would like, but, as soon as we have any news at all – we will let everyone know through the Doddington Diary.

We have installed a defibrillator outside the village hall and are looking to fund two more this year.

We were happy to welcome Cllr Hilton Fisher to our team this year, to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Cllr Geoff Collett

Councillors have attended various meetings throughout the year, such as the Parish Council Conference, where they have been able to network with other PC’s and share ideas, and we are delighted to announce that all of our Councillors have now completed training by CAPALC (Cambs and Peterborough Association of Local Councils), gaining certificates for Professional Development.

We nominated a number of Doddington people for the Pride in Fenland Awards this year, Jane & Alan for their work on some of the gardens in the village, Doddington Christmas Lights Committee for the splendid display and the amount of hard work undertaken to repair the lights, and Emily Shepherd for her unsung work on many of the clubs and groups within the village. We did not receive any prizes this year, but each of our nominees took away a certificate to say that they had taken part.

We are commissioning on going work at the new cemetery to delineate where the graves and headstones will be positioned and we hope to be in a position this year, to be able to use the cemetery, should this be required.

We continue to have sporadic problems with vandalism at the skate park, which we repair and re-instate as it happens. In the last year, we have spent £1.400 of our precious resources on this. We always involve the Police when this occurs and they provide a good presence at the area whenever they are able. It is such a shame that a very small number of youths spoil something that is well used and appreciated by so many.

Your Parish Council dealt with 32 new planning applications this year. We were sorry that the development on Wood Street got the green light from the District

Page 22: July is a busy month in Doddington; the Carnival and ... · The Show is open to everyone and we encourage you to enter your homemade . or homegrown items. For children it is a wonderful

20

Doddington Diary July 2019

Doddington Parish Council Annual ReportCouncil as we were against the application and are aware that this will cause a great deal of disruption to people who live there, and at that end of the village.

However, we were delighted to hear that FDC has once again managed to secure a five year land supply, which gives the PC more opportunity to be able to use prime reasons to support or reject new applications. We will continue to do as much as we are able to ensure that any new development brings sensible additions to our housing stock.

I think that you can see that we have been busy and pro-active during this year, and we continue to work hard for the village. We always welcome input into our deliberations, and you are most welcome to attend any of our meetings, which take place every second Wednesday in the month at the Church Rooms commencing at 7pm.

Our PC website, which has been under review, has been upgraded and is now much more user friendly. You can find it on DoddingtonParishCouncil.com. where you will find minutes of our meetings amongst other useful information.

Our sincere thanks to all of the people who keep the many clubs, groups and institutions going each year, to the Carnival and Sports Committee for what is always a wonderful day, to the Christmas Lights Committee for the best display in Fenland last year, to the Street Pride Group for their enthusiasm and hard work and to everyone who contributes to or just enjoys the great facilities we have.

We trust that you realise that the amount of work that we get through each year is quite high, and none of it could be realised without the hard work and good offices of each of our Councillors and our Parish Clerk. I am very fortunate in having an exceptional Team of people who all give of their time and efforts unstintingly and are a pleasure to work with. So I’d like to say an individual thankyou to Bill, Pat, Andrea, John, Ian, Jason, Ray and Hilton and to Roger, our Clerk for all of their help and input this year. Not forgetting our two very proactive District Councillors Maureen and David, and David for his work with Cambs County Council.

Doddington Diary July 2019

We have recently had a meeting with Robin Sutton, the new Chairman of Cambs NHW who gave us an insight into his new approach to NHW trying to give it a completely new image and encourage more residents to get involved. It is still work in progress at the moment and we will try to keep you updated in the meantime. He is also currently revamping the NHW website to be more user friendly. He is also working with the body that runs the Alert system aiming to provide better information and interaction with some control on our part. The police crime prevention department are fully supportive and agree with the new approach of NHW focusing on community well-being and cybercrime in addition to general crime prevention. There will be more news on this very shortly with hopefully some tangible information. The police still believe that NHW can be their eyes and ears and emphasise the need for the public to report all crimes so that patterns can be built up for future focussing. So once again we ask that if you to report all matters of anti-social behaviour and any suspicion of a crime to www.cambs.police.uk/report or call 101For general NHW information you can contact either Jim Jackson on 740653 or Bill Harrison on 741406 for Wimblington & Stonea or Andrea Harrison on 07766 658701 for Doddington. Don’t forget, if you are on Facebook you can keep yourself updated: www.facebook.com/FenCops/The weather has kept us from carrying out Speedwatch patrols recently, however we are always keen for new members to join us. We are now able to train you in-house and it’s quite quick and straightforward. So if you are concerned about speeding and can spare a few hours per month then please contact Joanne Rose for Wimblington or Andrea Harrison for Doddington by email at [email protected]

At the AGM the Club’s long serving Chairman, Les Payne and Treasurer, Beattie Kingham stepped down from their positions. Les and Beattie have both held their office for many years and have committed their time to keeping the Club going and organising interesting events. They were thanked for their hard work by the new Chairman, Roger Briggs and new Vice-Chair, Pat Jolley. Angela Cutteridge will take up the position as Treasurer along with her role of Secretary. The Club have lots of outings planned for this year. The outings will only be able to go ahead if support is received from people outside the Club, so please take a look at the schedule and contact us to book your place. The outings are very enjoyable, social days out and everyone is made to feel welcome; 16th July - Wroxham and Horning boat trip, £25 20th August - Sandringham and Hunstanton, £13 17th September - Mablethorpe with a carvery at The Jug & Kettle, £25 19th November - Christmas shopping, Peterborough, £3Please contact Angela, telephone 740300 to book your place.

1st Doddington Guides

As well as our weekly meetings, we have been busy with camps during June, in a mix of sunshine and rain! Some of our Scouts ran a Beetle Drive – another competitive & fun evening! They hiked across the footpaths from Boots Bridge back to the Hall, with some challenges along the way including making and carrying a wooden frame between them to transport a can of liquid on our walk, without spilling a drop. They have been working on survival skills ready for a 24 hours survival camp at the end of July, when they will need to make their own shelters to sleep in, light a fire without a match, and prepare and cook food without utensils. Our Cubs had a 2-night camp at Three Fishes Campsite in March, and undertook a Monopoly Run around the area, visiting locations on their Board and taking photos to prove they had found the places/items. They’ve also been learning/practising home skills such as scone making, laying tables, putting duvet covers on, and making cups of tea or coffee. Our Beavers have done some knot work by creating a “laser” obstacle course using wool tied to chair/table legs for the laser beams – they then had to try and climb through their own creations! They also had a one-night camp in Wisbech St Mary, with a hike, campfire, and some rain!! They made Father’s Day keyrings by sawing a wooden disc and drilling a hole it in with a hand-drill, which they then decorated. Lots of firsts that weekend….first night away from home for some, first night camping, first time sawing & drilling, and the first camp where two Beavers had a wobbly tooth fall out!Event’s coming up….July will be Carnival and Gala season! Watch out for our float, stall and BBQ on 6th in Doddington, and we will also have a stall at Manea Gala on 13th, and Wimblington on 21st. Come and say hello!Contact us if you would like to become a volunteer with the group, or you have a child interested in joining. [email protected] / www.facebook.com/DoddingtonScouts

We will be holding our biennial flower festival over the August bank holiday weekend, with stalls, live music and a draw on Saturday 24th August. The church will be decorated with floral displays arranged by the clubs and groups of Doddington – all depicting “The Magic of the Movies”. Make a note of the date. Doddington Diary July 2019

Doddington 100 Years Ago by David Edwards

July 1919

The Treaty of Versailles which formerly ended the First World War was signed on June 28th 1919. At a public meeting in the village chaired by Mr GT Butcher it was agreed to celebrate the event with:1. A dinner to be provided for every man residing in the parish who is serving or has served at any time during the war with the Navy, Army or Air Force

2. That a tea be provided for all children in the parish under 14 years of age

3. That a tea be provided for all persons in receipt of Old Age Pensions or Parish Relief

4. That sports be provided for the children, the cost of same not to exceed £10 and the cost of the whole programme to be a charge on the rates of the Parish.

Subsequent to the meeting the Doddington Branch of the National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen declined the invitation to the dinner, for reasons unknown, and it was decided to proceed with the rest of the programme.

The celebrations were held on July 19th and began with a peal rung on the church bells. The band commenced playing at the clock tower at 2pm and marched with the children to the sports field. At 4 pm the band marched the children to the school where 300 children and the pensioners sat down to a tea organized by the Women’s Institute. The sports were resumed at 6pm. 12 year old Harry Jackson won the one mile flat race with a 105 yard start.

Amongst the more unusual races were the thread needle race for girls, the novelty jockey race for boys, change of clothing race for boys, pillow fight for boys and a novelty hat race for girls.

The sports were followed by dancing.

The Inmates of the Workhouse held their celebrations at the House. The Workhouse Guardians agreed to increase the allowance for Poor Relief by 1s for each adult and 6d for each child for the week which included the Peace celebrations.

A cricket match on a rain soaked pitch at Benwick ended with Benwick all out for 15 and Doddington all out for 13. Other matches were played against March Town and March Whitemoor (GER).

The church choir had a day trip to Yarmouth.

To be continued........
