EDITOR’S NOTE

TAMPINES TO HAVE CHAMPIONSHIP DISTINCTIONBy Godfrey Robert

There is a buzz about Tanah Merah Country Club these days.

It revolves around the club’s Tampines course, which is to undergo redevelopment.

That is no secret.

For since the time that the Garden had lost land to Government acquisition for Changi Airport’s expansion, there was talk about Tampines’ makeover.

Over the past few months, it was no more speculation that it won’t be a makeover, but a redevelopment.

And the guessing game still goes on about what the major changes are going to be.

However, one thing is certain: the Tampines course will be morphed into a championship course.

And the Redevelopment Committee, headed by club president Ho Beng Huat, has worked out a design philosophy for the marvel idea, which sounds very exciting.

Among the 14 points for the redesign are ideas that would easily keep Tampines as among the top three courses in Singapore.

While the course, slated to host some of the major events in the future, offers a test more than that is seen in the current course, it will continue to provide fun for all levels of golfers.

The re-contouring will be pleasing to the eye and will offer a wide variety of holes.

It will be a parkland style of golf course without each fairway being lined on both sides with solid tree planting.

The greens complex will be unique and the course will reward strategic play.

For more on all that, read the comprehensive report inside, pages 6 to 9, by the Redevelopment Committee.

But one thing’s certain. The General Committee and the Redevelopment Committee will leave no stone unturned in this ambitious project.

So the existing clubhouse is to be extensively renovated, expanded and modernised.

The course will be upgraded to a first-class layout, and the main task will be handed to a familiar face, Phil Jacobs of Phil Jacobs Design.

An awe-inspiring championship course needs areas for first class viewing for spectators, and that is a primary task in the job scope of all involved.

Of course, for a major project like this, there will be temporary disruption in play.

The anticipated 15-month closure of Tampines for redevelopment will mean that all playing traffic will be channelled to the Garden course.

So there will be booking inconvenience, and sometimes slots may not be easily available for members and guests.

The appeal to members is to show patience, exercise understanding and bear with the disruption.

For at the end of the mission, members will be presented with a fabulous Tampines course, one that will challenge many of the best in the region and beyond.

One that they can call “our own” with pride and pomposity. v

The original Tampines golf course was built in 1988. It was

redeveloped in 2000. A minor renovation programme was

carried out in 2009 to extend the playability of the course.

Members have come to love the mature trees and the

challenging layout which forces the players to be creative in

shotmaking. In some way, the first nine has a “Forest” feel

while the 2nd nine gives you the “Lake” feel.

Our Garden course lost some 10 hectares of land to the

airport expansion last year. The planned ECP highway

expansion would further cut into part of the Garden course

within the next few years. We intend to apply for additional

land to mitigate this. However, the additional land applied

for, if successful, will not be available until the airport

developments are completed. This has made the intended

restoration of the Garden course uncertain.

In order to regain TMCC’s status as a premier club that

provides the members with a high quality international

championship golf course which is enjoyable to all, yet

challenging to the professionals, the General Committee

has decided to redevelop the Tampines course.

There is also the need to be self-sufficient in water for the

irrigation of both courses. The Public Utilities Board has

advised that our future water needs cannot be guaranteed

due to the competing demand from the industries. In view

of this, we need to create lakes of sufficient capacity at

Tampines to meet the irrigation needs of our two courses.

In addition, after some 16 years, the time and weather

elements have taken their toll on the Tampines course.

The lake walls have collapsed in many areas and the spare

parts for the water irrigation system are out of production.

The drainage pipes that are broken are choked by the

tree roots. The turf on the greens, fairways and tees have

been contaminated by other species. Organic matter has

dominated the fairway surface resulting in it adhering to

the face of the golf club after each stroke.

When the redeveloped Tampines course is completed,

we aspire to host major international golf tournaments

commensurate with TMCC’s status as a premier club and

make the new Tampines course, a reputable international

championship course.

Since the Land Transport Authority and the Public

Utilities Board had finalised the road and canal planning

for Tampines course, the General Committee gave its

approval in March 2016 to the redevelopment of Tampines

course and approved the appointment of the Tampines

Redevelopment Committee headed by President,

Ho Beng Huat. The other members of the committee

are Lee Kwong Weng, Goh Hup Chor, Goh Hoon Pur,

David Soh and Lee Lian Hong. They will be assisted by

Kok Min Yee and Ian Roberts.

The Redevelopment Committee decided to retain the

services of golf course designer, Phil Jacobs, who has been

involved with the Tampines conceptual design since 2009.

He was also the designer of our Garden course in 2004

and the reconfigured Garden course in 2015.

Phil was one of the founding partners

of Gary Player Design, based in

Johannesburg. He has experience

in golf course construction and

maintenance. His land surveying

background stands him in good

stead when it comes to setting out

levels and grades for golf courses.

Among the courses that Phil was directly involved

with are:

1. The Links, Fancourt Hotel and Residential Estate,

George. South Africa (Ranked No 1 in South Africa and

in top 50 worldwide by Golf Digest)

2. Leopard Creek, next to Kruger National Park. South

Africa (Ranked No 2 in South Africa. Hosts a European

Tour event every year)

3. Ria Bintan. Indonesia (Ranked best course in Indonesia

in 2014 by Asian Golf Monthly)

4. Château de Taulane. South East France – France

(Ranked 4th in France and 25th in the European

Union.)

5. Jockey Club. Kau Sai Chau (North) - Hong Kong

From the standpoint of project timeline, the following

key activities are envisaged:

1. Sign-off of golf course design

- June 2016

2. Tendering for and appointment of Consultants

- July 2016

viz Civil & Structural, Mechanical & Electrical,

Irrigation, Project Manager and Architect

3. Presentation of the new design to members

- August 2016

4. Tendering for and award of course construction

- December 2016

The Redevelopment Committee has invited several

architectural firms to submit their ideas for the clubhouse

and, when finalised, the details will be shared with

members.

For the redevelopment of the Tampines course, the design philosophy that is being employed encompasses the following main fundamentals:

1. The golf course must be fun to play for all levels of

golfers

2. From the championship tee markers, the test must be

outstanding but fair

3. The golf course must be suitable to host major

Professional Tournaments with first class viewing areas

for spectators and ease of movement for spectators

4. The re-contouring of the golf course must be pleasing

to the eye while providing a wide variety of lies to the

golfer

5. There will be a wide variety of holes from short to very

long. Direction of prevailing winds determines the

length and direction of key holes

6. The golf course must be memorable. Each hole must

have a special charm and a challenge of its own

7. The bunkering style will be classical and simple from

the Golden Era of golf course Architecture in America.

This period was from the late 1800’s to the mid 1930’s

8. The golf course must be a parkland style of golf course

without each fairway necessarily being lined on both

sides with solid tree plantings. Tree planting to be

done to allow the golfer long views at key points on the

course

9. The golf course must be simple to maintain. The grass

types currently under consideration are the same

grasses on the tees, fairways, roughs and greens on

the Garden course

10. Each green complex will be unique and stand on its

own

11. The strategy of the golf course will reward strategic play

12. Most of the greens will have a portion of the front of the

green open, to allow the running shot to run onto the

green

13. Water will come into play on 10 of the holes. Ample

width in the landing areas will provide the option of

conservative play

14. Where feasible, sensor technology will be exploited to

optimise the watering needs of the course and help to

conserve water

The redeveloped Tampines course will surpass the existing

Garden and Tampines course in all aspects and will be

among the best championship course in Singapore and the

region

Tentatively, the current Tampines course will be closed from

January 2017 to March 2018, subject to reconfirmation.

The General Committee is mindful of the members’ playing

time at Garden when Tampines is closed and is looking at

options to minimise disruption to members’ ability to get

tee-times. The appropriate announcement will be released

in due time.

As we embark on this exciting project, The Redevelopment

Committee will issue updates to keep members in tune

with the project progress. We are looking forward to

showing the members the display of the redeveloped

Tampines by August which will give a much better feel of the

new course. ❖

02 ALL F&B OUTLETS TO INCLUDE 7% GST IN FINAL BILLINGWith effect from 1 July 2016, 7% GST shall be added to the final bill at all F&B outlets in the Club.

This NEW pricing policy was discussed and approved by the General Committee on 4 May 2016 in response to the ever-increasing food and labour costs. The Club is thus unable to continue absorbing the GST, which started out at only 3% in 1994 when it was first introduced, and increased to the current 7% charge.

We seek the understanding of all Members and look forward to your continued patronage to our F&B outlets, as we strive to continue elevating the quality of our food and service.

03 MINIMUM F&B SPENDING ALLOWED AT ALL F&B OUTLETSThe F&B Committee has approved the usage of the minimum F&B spending of quarterly $75 and monthly $25, at all F&B outlets on all days.

04 INCREASE IN ADMINISTRATIVE FEES FOR OVERDUE ACCOUNTS

The General Committee is concerned that the number of defaulters is significant and on an upward trend over the past 12 months. The number of Members who received a second reminder letter, which resulted in their Club privileges being withdrawn, is also generally on an upward trend. This has caused the Club additional unproductive administrative time and effort in monitoring these Members and sending reminders.

To stem this upward trend, the General Committee has deliberated and endorsed the following fee increments effective 1st of May 2016, as the current fees, which had not been increased for the past 24 years, have not been an effective deterrent.

REVISED administrative fee when 2nd reminders are sentFee will be increased from $10 to $50.

REVISED administrative fee when 3rd reminders are sentFee will be increased from $20 to $100.

Letter of DemandIf a letter of demand is sent, after more than three reminder letters are sent, the cost of the letter of demand shall be recoverable from the Member.

Members are advised to keep their account in credit and encouraged to sign up for GIRO payment for their convenience. GIRO forms are available on our website or at our reception counters.

Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are aged 55 years and above as at 26 April 2016 and with a USGA Handicap Index of 18.0 or lower, as at 1 March 2016.

09On 4 August 2016, SGA will launch the Centralised Handicapping System (CHS) for its Ordinary and Associate Members. The CHS will provide a modern and unified platform for golf handicapping, changing the way golfers perform their handicapping activities, and introducing consistency in calculation of golfers’ Handicap Index.

Members of SGA Ordinary and Associate Members must register at the SGA CHS website at chs.sga.org.sg before they can use CHS. Registration will open on 20 June 2016 and close on 25 July 2016.

During registration, golfers are required to fill in the data requested and indicate that they give consent to their data being collected, used and/or disclosed. This may include their name, gender, golf club(s) of which they are a member, membership number, Handicap Index, scoring records, dates and places of play.

Golfers who have successfully registered and have had their membership details authenticated by their home club will be sent an email on 4 August 2016 to activate their account. They will also be requested to set their password before they can start using CHS. In addition, golfers will be required to give their consent again before activation is successful. Once this is done, golfers are free to post their scores immediately anywhere and anytime.

Access Your Handicap Index and Post Scores Anytime, AnywhereGolfers will now be able to perform all their handicapping activities via multiple channels, including web, their iOS or Android devices and their club’s terminals. With such user friendly options to choose from, posting scores and checking handicaps will be a breeze.

09 SGA Centralised Handicapping System (CHS)FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is the SGA Centralised Handicapping System (CHS)?

Ans: The SGA Centralised Handicapping System (CHS), as its name implies, is a system that computes all handicapping scoring data centrally and distributes the processed handicap data to all SGA Members for their Handicap Committees to review before release to CHS. Scores can be posted anywhere and anytime either by the clubs or individually by golfers through club terminals, via the Internet or through the phone app. CHS also tracks golfers who play at any golf courses in Singapore and requires that a score be posted in order for golfers to avoid being awarded a penalty score.

2. How different is it from the current SGA National Handicap Book (NHB)?

Ans: As far as display of golfers’ Handicap Index is concerned, CHS is no different from the National Handicap Book (NHB). However, NHB only displays the handicap data of golfers and does not process them. All scores posted either by players or clubs go directly to their respective club’s system where they are computed separately. Thereafter, the Handicap Index that has been generated is submitted by all SGA Members to NHB for display.

3. How do I register for the SGA CHS?Ans: Golfers who are members of SGA Ordinary and Associate

Members can register directly for CHS by logging in to the “Register for CHS” button on the CHS website (chs.sga.org.sg). Golfers are required to fill in the data requested and indicate that they give consent to their data being collected, used and/or disclosed for CHS purposes. These may include their name, gender, home club, membership number, Handicap Index, scoring records, dates of play and places of play.

4. Can I register for the SGA CHS but not give consent for CHS to use my personal handicap data?

Ans: No. Golfers who do not give consent will not be able to complete their registration for CHS. As such, they will not be able to use CHS.

5. Why must I activate my CHS account after registration?Ans: Golfers who have successfully registered and have had

their membership details authenticated by their home club will be sent an email to activate their account. They will also be requested to set their password before they can start using CHS. In addition, golfers will be required to give their consent again before activation is successful. Once this is done, golfers are free to post their scores immediately anywhere and anytime.

6. Will I be given a new CHS number?Ans: No. Golfers need to only select their home club and key

in their club membership number to log in to CHS once they have successfully activated their CHS account.

7. What happens if I missed the CHS initial registration cut-off date?

Ans: Once CHS is officially launched on 4 Aug 2016, golfers who have missed registering for CHS will still be able to do so. The process is similar and when their CHS account is activated golfers may start posting their scores immediately. Golfers’ handicap history from NHB will be retained as at the 1st Aug 2016 revision. However, their newly calculated handicap data will only be displayed at the next revision date.

8. How do I register for CHS if I do not have an email and do not have the means to obtain one?

Ans: Golfers who do not have an email but wish to use CHS will have to register through their home club. Their home club will register and activate their account on their behalf. However, such golfers will not be able to post their scores online. Their clubs will manually post their scores to CHS for them. As such, all golfers are encouraged to go online to make full use of CHS!

9. Do I have an option not to participate in CHS?Ans: Yes. However, that means that you will not have a valid

USGA Handicap Index.

10. Do I need to give my details when registering to play at other club’s golf courses?

Ans: Yes, you will be asked to provide your home club and membership number to the club where you are playing. This will allow CHS to capture your details and require you to post a score after completing your game.

11. Can I play in other clubs without a CHS issued USGA Handicap Index?

Ans: This will depend on the clubs that you wish to play at. Currently, not all SGA Ordinary Members’ require that golfers possess a valid USGA Handicap Index to play at their courses. However, this may change and golfers may need a USGA Handicap Index before they can play.

12. Can I play in golf events like charity opens or corporate golf games without a CHS issued USGA Handicap Index?

Ans: Again this depends on the organisers of such events. However, golfers without a valid USGA Handicap Index may face complications if there is a claim, for example, for a hole-in-one prize. Most insurance companies would require proof of USGA Handicap Index when processing such prizes.

13. Can my home club issue me with a handicap?Ans: All SGA Members are sub-licensed by SGA to issue USGA

Handicap Index to their members using SGA CHS. Any handicaps that are issued outside SGA CHS are not recognised.

14. When is the CHS revision date?Ans: The CHS revision date is the 1st of each month. However,

the cut-off date is the 26th day of the preceding month. Any scores posted after that date will be processed in the following month.

15. How do I post my scores?Ans: Golfers can post their scores anywhere and anytime

using their club’s terminal, the Internet or through their iOS or Android phone app.

16. Can I still post my scores using my club’s scorecard?Ans: Yes, you may still post scores using a scorecard. However,

this means your club will have to post your score to CHS. We encourage golfers to take full advantage of CHS and post scores themselves. Please note that you should not submit your scorecard to your club if you have already posted your scores directly to CHS.

17. What happens if I do not post my score after a game?Ans: If you do not post an acceptable score within 13 days of

playing, CHS will post a penalty score equal to the lowest Handicap Differential in your scoring record on the 14th

day.

18. How do I change an incorrectly posted score?Ans: An incorrect score that has been posted can only be

changed by your club. Please approach your club staff to make any corrections to scores that you have posted before the next revision date.

19. I am a member of several clubs. Do I have to designate a home club?

Ans: Yes, you must designate a home club for handicapping purposes. Your home club should be the club where you play the most golf.

20. Will CHS replace the role of my club Handicap Committee?

Ans: No, CHS does not replace the responsibilities of your club Handicap Committee. Club Handicap Committees will, at their monthly meeting, review all handicapping data before they are released for display on CHS.

21. Is my club Handicap Committee still responsible for my Handicap Index?

Ans: Yes. Your club Handicap Committee is the only authority that can issue or adjust your Handicap Index.

22. Do club Handicap Committees still have the responsibility to conduct its monthly meeting to review the Handicap Index of its members?

Ans: Yes. CHS does not absolve the responsibilities of club Handicap Committees to ensure the integrity of the Handicap Index that are issued to their members.

23. What happens to my CHS handicap scoring records if I am no longer a member of my club?

Ans: If you are no longer a member of an SGA Ordinary or Associate Member, you will not be eligible to hold a USGA Handicap Index. However, your handicap scoring records will be kept in CHS for up to a year and will be transferred to your new club, if you decide to join one.

24. What happens to my child who is no longer a junior member of my club and is not eligible to maintain his/her Handicap Index under my membership?

Ans: Clubs’ junior members’ terms and conditions will apply. CHS is available only to members of SGA Ordinary and Associate Members.

25. What if I forget my password?Ans: Click on the “FORGOT PASSWORD” link on the main page,

and fill up the form that is displayed. The membership number and email address you enter must match those which are stored in CHS. You will then receive an email containing a link to set your new password.

DETERMINED DION IS A

WinnerLadies Club ChampionshipSunday, 22 May 2016

By Godfrey Robert

Dion Lim embodies a personality for whom sports and studies matter.

And she is a typical example of a Singaporean who has to balance both in the hope of doing well at both.

That is not easy.

Many Singaporean athletes have fallen through the cracks trying to excel in both. For the pressure is great, the allocation of time for both pursuits is a tough challenge.

But the 20-year-old who is pursuing a course in Diagnostic Radiography finds it a massive challenge having a pretty tight academic schedule accompanied with internships/attachments at various hospitals.

“So my weekdays are quite packed. I usually play a round of golf on Sundays apart from league games and will head to the driving range on Saturdays if I do happen to have time away from studies.”

Despite that Dion cruised to victory in the club’s Ladies Club Championship in May by beating a relatively strong field at the revamped par-70 Garden course (second and third days) and the Tampines course (first day).

She registered scores of 72-81-79 for 15-stroke victory over the seasoned Gillian Sim, with another club stalwart Michelle Ang finishing third a further shot behind.

Dion, whose favourite colour is orange, said about her first-day shooting 72 at the Tampines course: “Honestly I wasn’t expecting much coming into this competition as I haven’t been training much due to my studies.

“Therefore when I was halfway through the first round, I started feeling a little more cautious as it’s been a while since I’ve played such a good round, reaching a point of being two under,

and I was constantly reminding myself to hold on and focus to the end.

“However, I managed to birdie my last two holes which really helped with the outcome of the score, which included six birdies, four bogeys and one double-bogey.

“I had a very good feel over my putter during the first round. I managed to make quite a few good putts, particularly the right-to-left ones! Yes, it was the best score I’ve played in a competitive event, and the second time I’ve shot 72 (Tampines).

Dion added: “Although it felt like I could actually proceed the rest of the game with more confidence, still I had to be more careful with what I did on the course. I mean who knows what could happen in the rest of the game?”

For the 4.8 handicap index golfer, “the second and third rounds didn’t go as smoothly as the first. “

I was really disappointed with my putting because the ball was leaping out of the many holes, and that was just frustrating. “Although I was still leading after the 2nd round, it didn’t feel that great after all, due to the frustrating day I had.”

Dion admires the recent winner of the US Open 2016, Dustin Johnson. “He is such a great inspiration!”, she says. ❖

FUMIKO

Putts

HER WAY TO THE TITLELadies Intermediate ChampionshipSunday, 22 May 2016

By Godfrey Robert

Decent putting was the key to Fumiko Minowa’s triumph in the TMCC Ladies Intermediate Championship at the Garden course in May.

And this helped the 14-handicap index golfer to secure consistent rounds over three days for a four-shot victory over strong challenger Yeo Su Lynn.

Fumiko strung rounds of 89, 89 and 90 for a 268 total that saw her turn a tight contest into a relatively easy win.

As she says: “I had 14 three-putts when I won the event in 2014, but this time only four three-putts.”

And the Garden is notorious for players even four-putting because some of the greens are vast and undulating.

She credits Simon Chew, husband of Ladies Matchplay Champion, Jasmine Chew, for the advice she received on putting two weeks prior to the tournament.

Going into the final round, she was tied with Yeo (also 89-89), and faltered at the first hole with a double-bogey to trail Yeo by one shot.

But the seasoned campaigner bounced back, especially in the last six holes to snatch a commanding win as Yeo slumped to a 94.

Finishing third was Goh Gaik Seoh a further three shots behind on 275.

On whether she felt any pressure going into the final round, Fumiko said: “I played in the same flight with my good friends.

“Some of them are my league teammates. We knew each other well so there was no stress during the game.

“However, along the way, I got a little nervous and so I made a few mistakes. Maybe the pressure of heading to the title.”

But she was able to manage the pressure because she kept her mind away from what was going on around her and stayed focus.

She added: “I didn’t know about the five-shot lead heading into the final hole. I didn’t count my score until I was about to submit the card.

“I was not sure that I had won until I checked the final results.

“In this game anything can happen. On Day Two, a course handicap-23 player played 84, eight under par. So anyone could have come in and won,” said Fumiko, who believes that it is getting harder and harder to win the club’s Intermediate championship.

Fumiko, who has been in Singapore for 17 years (over two postings), is a charming golfer who is a great kaki to her regular players who join her twice or three times a week at TMCC.

She has been playing golf for more than 20 years and is a dedicated and passionate golfer.

Although she admired Swede Henrik Stenson once, currently she watches golf on television without having seriously rooting for anyone because she just “enjoys good golf”.

Her favourite club is the nine-iron which, since she had adjusted her swing, is helping her to get out of any slump.

Still, her overall improved game is what separated her from the strong challengers. ❖

SGA Inter-Club League 2016 By Chung Hong Zheng

The 2016 SGA Inter-Club League kicked off on the April 10, 2016. Each team will play 12 matches throughout the season, which will come to a close on the October 2, 2016. Following months of training in the build-up to the season, team TMCC were raring to go and determined to clinch the overall title this year, having come close in the previous seasons.

Team TMCC started the league season brightly, recording a 9.5 – 4.5 win over Jurong Country Club, with the game played at National Service Resort & Country Club. Despite inclement weather that forced some matches to be abandoned, some

of our players managed to secure large margins of victory to ensure the team got off to a winning start.

The team next faced off against Orchid Country Club in Game 2, where good weather ensured that all matches could be completed at Seletar Country Club. TMCC recorded a similarly resounding 9.5 – 4.5 victory. The highlight of the day undoubtedly belonged to “Senior” Division player, David Soh. Soh scored a hole-in-one on the 13th hole of his match, sealing a 7 & 5 win in some style.

From the Greens 25

The third game of the season was a top of the table clash between TMCC and Warren Golf & Country Club (WGCC), with both clubs tied for the overall lead at the time with six points apiece. In such a crucial match early on in the season, team TMCC knew that only a victory over their closest rivals would suffice. Needless to say, the team rose to the occasion, and delivered a hard-fought 8 – 6 win over WGCC. With the win, TMCC took over sole possession of the overall lead in the 2016 SGA Inter-Club League.

TMCC sought to maintain the lead in our fourth match-up of the season, going up against Keppel Club. After another tough battle with a strong team, TMCC prevailed 9 – 5. Remarkably, team TMCC were able to celebrate a second hole-in-one achievement by one of our players, with “A” Division player, Wong Qi Ming, holing his tee-shot on the tricky par-3 14th at Warren Golf & Country Club.

In the most recent match, the fifth of the season, TMCC faced off against Sembawang Country Club at Jurong Country Club. Light showers in the afternoon threatened to suspend play and hold the teams to a stalemate. However, the weather cleared without any disruption to play, and the team finished the day with yet another 9.5 – 4.5 win.

Having completed five out of a total of 12 matches so far, team TMCC have opened up a five-point lead in the overall standings. Meanwhile, the “Premier” and “B” teams are leading their individual divisions; the “A” and “Seniors” team are lying 2nd; while the “Ladies” team are in the top 5 position of their division.

With nearly half of the season in the books, the team will continue to work hard and strive to build on our lead throughout the remainder of the season. ❖

This is a question I am asked from time to time. Contrary to rumours which occasionally circulate, there is nothing in the Rules of Golf forbidding a player from changing a shirt, going into the locker room or even leaving the course during a round. In fact a note to Rule 6-8a says leaving the course does not of itself constitute discontinuance of play.

Furthermore, another note to Rule 6-8a says players discontinuing match play by agreement is not in breach of the Rule unless by so doing the competition is delayed.

The main Rule that applies to this subject is 6-7. Undue Delay; Slow Play. This Rule says the player shall play without undue delay and in accordance with any pace of play guidelines that the Committee may establish. This also applies between two holes. So going to the locker room to change a shirt is permissible, providing this does not unduly delay play.

The local custom of stopping for refreshments during a round is confirmed by two decisions:• 6-8a/2.5 says the Committee may permit players to discontinue

play for refreshments for a short period of time (eg up to five minutes), to avoid the danger of heat exhaustion in a hot climate, and

• 6-8a/2.7 says a player may enter the clubhouse or a half-way house to obtain a refreshment without penalty, provided he does not unduly delay either his own play or that of his opponent or any other competitor.

However, the need to continue play without undue delay and in accordance with any pace of play guidelines that the Committee

may establish should not be taken lightly, because the penalty for failing to do so is loss of hole in Match play or two strokes in Stroke play. Furthermore, the penalty for a subsequent offence is disqualification.

Some decisions on particular situations:A group of competitors who went into the clubhouse after nine holes and watched television for 45 minutes should be disqualified, even though the programme was the final round of a golf tournament! (Decision 6-8a/1)

Rule 6-8a(iv) permits a player to discontinue play because of sudden illness and the player incurs no penalty if he reports to the Committee as soon as practicable and the Committee considers his reason satisfactory. Decision 6-8a/3 recommends that the Committee should allow a player 10 or 15 minutes to recuperate from such a problem, but ordinarily allowing more time than that would be inadvisable. This Decision also covers specifically, heat exhaustion, a bee sting or because the player has been struck by a golf ball as qualifying “sudden illnesses” for the purpose of this Rule.

Decision 6-8a/4 concerns two competitors who were sharing a golf cart that became inoperable, so they returned to the clubhouse to obtain another cart. It was held that it may not always be reasonable to expect players to carry their own bag. If the competitors reported as soon as practicable after discontinuing play the Committee may consider the reason for discontinuance satisfactory, in which case there would be no penalty. It was noted that the competitors must resume play when directed to do so by the Committee. v

5 Steps for great bunker raking 1. Locate the lowest spot around the edge of the bunker that

is convenient and nearest to your golf ball. This will be your entry and exit point and keeps you from walking down a steep face and possibly damaging the turf and leaving deeper footprints, making it more difficult to rake out.

2. Enter the bunker with your rake and drop it near to your ball, before playing the shot. This will save time and effort going back and forth to collect the rake.

3. After you have played your ball out, begin raking over the area your club met with the sand and footprints. The best technique is to push the sand away from you, using long strokes. Raking towards your body will cause farrows, rake teeth marks and create an uneven sand surface.

The idea is to restore an even surface to the sand without displacing too much sand. All the while, you should be progressing back to the edge of the bunker.

By Director of Golf, Ian Roberts

BUNKER RAKING Showing that you can rake bunkers will also demonstrate you have empathy for your fellow golfers.

TipsFROM

IAN

PART 1 OF 3 SERIES

4. To complete the raking, step out of the bunker and make your final few passes over the sand with the rake. The sand’s surface should be evened out, with no signs of divots or footprints, and no excess sand having been pulled towards the bunker’s edge.

5. Replace the rake outside the bunker parallel to the line of play.

The important thing is that the sand surface is to be left in as good a condition or better than what you found it in. This is to ensure that golfers following behind you have a good quality bunker to play from. v

Entering & exiting bunkers at steep sides will cause bunker damage and possible personal injury.

A party never fails to put a smile on a child’s face.

So with this in mind, Tanah Merah Country Club’s mid-year Children’s Party was back to do just that.

With the June holidays giving the children a well-deserved break from the hectic yearly start to the school term, homework and remedials aside, there should be fun during the period.

Held on Saturday, 28 May 2016, the winding down party attracted 20 participants.

It was games galore as the party kicked off with sumptuous buffet dinner at 7pm.

Apart from the mini bonus game prizes, there were also nine wonderful prizes with the first prize of a Lenovo Tab 2 tablet up for grabs.

And as the day flew by in a jiffy, it was soon time to call it a night.

However, not to fret, as the year-end party will come around, so do look forward to it.

Until then! v

3 Days 2 Nights Children’s Sports CampMonday, 30 May to Wednesday, 1 June 2016

By Godfrey Robert

It was not the usual rush hour on a Monday morning, as 37 eager children traded their school uniform and homework for a 3 days 2 nights Sports Camp, organised by Tanah Merah Country Club.

After a quick collection of the camp T-shirts, some safety briefing of the do’s and don’ts, with some time to settle in and get to know one another, and the Sports Camp was officially kicked off.

What awaited them first was a Sports Clinic, where the children were divided into two groups, one heading to the tennis courts for lessons and the other for the Garden Driving Range’s practice putting area for some golf lessons conducted by our in-house golf professional, Rob Richardson.

After a relaxing poolside lunch, an archery battle session, conducted by Cross-Blades, taught the children the importance of focus as well as teamwork.

It was time to get out of the heat and cool down in the pool games, where they got to play water polo and water volleyball.

A movie titled “Tangled” provided an end to a much exhilarating day of fun and activities on Day 1.

Day 2 began bright and early with a morning workout with the camp councillor followed by breakfast by the pool.

Then it was off to KidZania Sentosa, an interactive indoor theme park where kids can independently explore an 81,000 square feet kid-sized city, complete with buildings, paved streets, vehicles and a functioning economy, just like in a real world!

Through realistic role-play, they learnt about different careers, the inner-workings of a city and the concept of managing money.

Having “worked hard” at their various occupations, the children were treated to “The Angry Birds” movie followed by dinner before heading back to the club for another movie titled “Despicable Me 1” before it was lights off.

On the third day, the children headed out for their second outing to Katapult Trampoline Park after breakfast, where they participated

in activities like Slam Dunk, Dodgeball, Free Fall. Bag Jump, Slack Line and Wall Run.

The intensity was mellowed down with the next activity of Prawning, and to add some fun, the children were divided into teams and the team with the most number of prawns caught within one hour got to win medals.

Once back at the Club, all prizes were given out and everyone beamed before he or she headed for home.

Until the next holidays! v

A THREE-IN-ONE TRIP COVERING Shopping, Eating and Education

2 Days 1 Night Malacca GetawaySaturday, 28 to Sunday 29 May 2016

By Godfrey Robert

Shopping and eating are the essentials of any trip.

That, and for sure, more, were what 20 members and guests experienced at the 2-Day 1-Night Malacca Getaway on Saturday, 28 and Sunday, 29 May 2016.

The extra bonus came in the form of a little education on the history of Malacca, a Malaysian state rich in tradition, culture and heritage.

The group started-off via Tuas Checkpoint and headed up straight to Malacca after their breakfast at Gelang Patah.

It took about three hours to reach Malacca, just in time for lunch.

And everyone got to savour a delectable 12-course Nyonya lunch with dishes such as Ayam Buah Keluak, Udang Masak Lemak Nenas, Sambal Sotong Petai, Kachang and Panjang Belacan.

The highlight of this trip was the heritage tour, one so popular because Malacca is known to have a rich and diverse culture as well as numerous historical places and buildings.

The narration by experienced and knowledgeable tour guide Ms Aishah Elias made it all the more interesting.

“How did “Melaka” get its name?” asked tour guide Ms Aishah.

And then she related the story about Parameswara, also known as Sang Nila Utama (founder of Singapura), who fled the island kingdom after a Majapahit invasion in 1398 and founded his new stronghold, Melaka (or now known as Malacca), naming it after the ‘Melaka’ tree he was resting under.

The members enjoyed tremendously the visits to historical places such as St. Paul’s Church, A. Famosa, Christ Church Melaka, which reflected the country’s rich colonial past and also Baba Museum, where Ms

Emily, the museum guide, provided a very educational and historical tour of the Baba traditional home and interesting artefacts.

It was then to the famous Jonker Street for more food and shopping where the recommended items on the shopping list were gula melaka (palm sugar) and mee sua (very thin variety of salted Chinese noodles made from wheat flour), which the Babas’ ate a lot during birthdays as it represented longevity.

Hatten Hotel where everyone stayed overnight was a fantastic location as it had two mega shopping malls and shop houses, only a walking distance, which they covered on the second day.

Shopping began at Baba Charlie Nyonya Kueh, Dataran Pahlawan, Mahkota Parade and there was also enough time for a good massage for some.

Before heading back for Singapore, the members also stopped at Yoyo local products shop and savoured a delicious 8-course Chinese dinner at Rong Cheng Chinese Restaurant at Yong Peng.

With such fond memories of Malacca and having learnt so much about its rich culture, as well as loads of shopping bags to bring home on a full stomach, the trip was indeed well-worth. v

All things that come in bite sizes normally attract.

So do cookies, which always add that extraordinary touch as a snack.

Take with coffee, dip it in milk, or even eaten on their own.

They never fail to satisfy.

Best of all, they come sweet.

Often melting in the mouth.

That was probably what brought together 13 attendees from ages 7 to 60, on the Saturday morning of 14 May to TMCC’s kitchen studio in Ixora Room.

TEMPT THE MEN WITH COOKIES

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES Saturday, 14 May 2016

By Godfrey Robert

They learnt how to bake three types of cookies - Chocolate Chips, Double Chocolate Chips and Oatmeal.

The turnout was surely a justification that people of all ages love the taste of cookies.

Instructor Valerie Kong also gave tips on the do’s and don’ts to achieving that perfect light and porous cookies that are enjoyed by many.

And while some of the ladies were uncertain if they should bake cookies for their male counterparts, Valerie had this to say, “Whenever it comes down to baked Chocolate Chip cookies, they will always be appreciated by men.”

Well said! v

Chiffon cakes are often light to the taste and easy as teatime snacks.

Add a little zest and fruity flavour to the mix and it becomes an absolute must-have on the table.

These fluffy treats are also slated to be healthier and lower in saturated fat than their buttered counterparts.

The reason: Vegetable oil is normally used in chiffon cakes in place of butter, although Valerie uses olive oil.

However, it was not just a healthy choice that attracted the 14 ladies for this Chiffon Cakes workshop on Saturday, 25 June.

WHY THEY’RE A MUST-HAVE

LYCHEE ROSE & MANGO PASSIONFRUIT CHIFFON CAKES Saturday, 25 June 2016

By Godfrey Robert

Many of them had pre-booked early to ensure their places were secured.

It was the combination of Mango with Passionfruit and Lychee with Rose that was the appeal, as these tastes were newly created by instructor Valerie Kong and cannot be found outside.

While it may sound simple, the right portion of the fruity mix was an important factor as too much of either could mask one of the tastes.

With Valerie providing the recipe to the right amount of mix to be added, all participants went home happy with the extra knowledge to getting that prefect mix.v
