JULY & AUGUST 2013

Friends of the Center Award 2013Each year, the Friends board and staff select a “Friend of the Center” who has made a lasting impact through their actions and deeds . This year, the award was shared by two people, Tom and Janet Peschka .

Tom is a part-time building coordinator for the Milwaukie Center and a full-time volunteer . He helps coordinate the Emergency Wood Program, personally chopping and stacking wood, helps out in our Handyman program which assists patrons and clients with small needs and volunteers with AniMeals .

Janet is currently the Chairperson of the Friends of the Milwaukie Center board and does much more . She is also on the Rose Garden Committee and deeply involved in planning and implementing special events . Janet delivers Meals on Wheels and does the grocery shopping for the Bingo snack bar . Janet also volunteers with other organizations .

Both Tom and Janet are caring, dedicated individuals who can be counted on in so many ways and we are honored to count them among our friends .

It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live. Dr. Andrus, AARP

CMArTy hAnley’s MessAge As I settled into my position as Center Supervisor, one of the things that struck me was the scope and magnitude of the volunteer workforce at the Milwaukie Center .

Volunteers really do touch every aspect of life at the Milwaukie Center . Whether you receive Meals on Wheels, get help with your taxes, come for a Healthy Aging Workshop or take a class here, chances are a volunteer has made your experience better .

I also find it very rewarding to see how many of our volunteers volunteer for programs and utilize other programs as a patron . These interactions form an amazing web of relationships which are the heart of the Milwaukie Center .

If you already volunteer here I would like to thank you for all that you do . If you don’t, I would encourage you to come in and give it a try . It can be hard work and a challenge, but it will enrich your life while improving the lives of many people that the Milwaukie Center serves .

Marty Hanley, Center Supervisor

Thank you for 36 incredible years of building the Best in the West Bazaar . After much deliberation, it was decided that the Bazaar is no longer a viable fundraiser for the Nutrition Program .

I have found that among its other benefits, giving

liberates the soul of the giver. Maya Angelou

TeenA hAllTeena Hall has been teaching at the Milwaukie Center for over 20 years . In that time she has developed an amazing workout program for all of her classes .

Teena’s new Outdoor Circuit Training class (see page 5 for a description) will take all of her years of experience and knowledge and bring it outside . You will work on increasing strength, endurance, flexibility and balance .

This class will be game-oriented which will make it different from any other fitness class . Teena knows how to trick people into exercising without them even realizing it . She is also very aware of students’ abilities and keeps activities safe throughout using modifications .

This new class will have lots of variety, and will focus on a particular fitness goal so that students will see progress (i .e ., strength, cardio, flexibility) .

Sign up today and enjoy the beautiful summer weather in the park .

sTAFF ChAngesIn an effort to streamline and preserve all services at the Milwaukie Center, there has been some shifting of staff responsibilities .

Lisa Kasubuchi is the new Client Services Coordinator . She will still be responsible for the Place At The Center Program, but will now also be the primary staff person who is doing the Meals on Wheels in-home eligibility assessments, and other program and case management .

Linda Whitmore is the new Client Services Assistant . She will be part of the social service team along with Abby Kennedy and Lisa . She will be providing client and program support .

Todd Shetterly is now both the Travel and Transportation Coordinator as these two programs have been combined . Todd will still be running the travel trips, but will now also be the primary staff responsible for the daily bus transportation to the Milwaukie Center .

nuTs And bolTs

Please clean out your workbench and junk drawers and bring in nuts and bolts to be recycled in Center projects.

PlAy boCCe! Bocce is a great way to get outside and play an easy-to-learn game with a friend . Up to 4 people can play with one set . Bocce is a lot like bowling . Weighted grapefruit sized balls are used to try to hit the pallina (small white or yellow ball) . Points are awarded to the team that gets their ball closest to the pallina .

A bocce set is now available for loan at the recreation office .

A bocce workshop will be held on Wednesday, July 10 at11:30 a .m . Please sign up at the Recreation Office or call 503-794-8092 .

Staff who receive the checks give the attendees an update on how the funds impact their programs . We also hear from each of the Friends committee chairs – Bingo, Gift Shop, Rose Garden and Endowment .
