Dear Brothers and Sisters,Kathy and I would like to take

this opportunity to thank all of the delegates of the 97th Annual Convention at the Radisson Hotel in Nashua, New Hamp-shire, for the faith and trust they have placed in me. Allow-ing Kathy and I to continue representing the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts as your State President and First Lady is a very humbling experience.

I would like to thank all of the delegates for a great conven-tion; there were many items that were voted upon and some changes to bylaws that filial lodges must adhere to next year. The convention was well attended and many brothers and sisters said it was one of the best conventions in years. I know the sisters that were in the Watertown hospitality room had a “Wu Wu!” of a great time.

I would like to thank State First Vice President Carmelita Bello, the Convention Chairman and State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito, the Convention Coordinator, for all of the hard work they put into organizing this Convention.

To the commissioners, chair-men of commissions and mem-bers of the council who are not returning, thank you for your dedication and hard work throughout the past two years.

We now have some new mem-bers on the council, and I know they will be out visiting lodges, introducing themselves and pushing membership. These next two years will be all about membership, membership, membership — we must be-gin working harder to recruit more new members and retain existing ones. If our member-ship continues to decrease, we will have no choice but to increase our per capita, so to avoid this it is up to each of us to bring in one new member.

On Sunday, September 18th, the Sports Commission will hold our annual Bocce Tourna-ment at the Watertown Lodge. Please come on down and show off your Bocce skills.

In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Unifi cation of Italy, the Grand Lodge will present “That’s Amore” starring Pat Benti and Tutti Pazzi, on Saturday, October 1, 2011, at

the Watertown Sons of Italy, 520 Pleasant Street, Watertown. Tickets are $40.00 per person, including a buffet at 7:00 p.m., show at 8:15 p.m., and dancing until 11 p.m. Get your tickets early, because this event will sellout. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Grand Lodge at 617-489-5234 or by emailing [email protected].

Mark your calendars: the Purple Aster, our signature annual event, will be held on Saturday, November 12, at Spinelli’s Function Facility in Lynnfi eld. We will have plenty of food and plenty of dancing!

September will be here before you know it, and all lodges will begin their schedule of meetings and functions. Please inform the Grand Lodge of any activi-ties that your lodge is hosting. We would love to join you!

Kathy and I would like to thank all the Lodges that have invited us to their summer cookouts, and we hope you enjoy the remainder of this hot season. We look forward to see-ing you all in September.

God Bless you all and God Bless the Order Sons of Italy.

mendations of the committee on the proposals presented at this convention. Of the various proposals submitted, the fol-lowing two (2) by-law changes were approved.

1. State Orator Robert Bon-core, Esq. submitted a pro-posal to simplify the fi lial lodge election process by amending M.L. ART. 101 (The State Del-egates) to allow for the election of state delegates every two years, coinciding with the election of lodge offi cers and arbitration committee. The passage of this by-law now requires lodges to hold elec-

tions for Delegates in 2012 for a one (1) year term only. Beginning in 2013, lodges will hold elections for all offi cers, delegates, and arbitrators for a two-year term.

2. State Financial Secretary Catherine Bourassa submit-ted a proposal to extend the deadline for fi lial lodges to pay their per capita taxes in order to be seated at convention; the proposal was amended on the fl oor to include a change to the number of members re-quired to be given a delegate. M.L. ART. 98 was amended to change the deadline for a lodge to pay their outstanding per capita balance in full from April 30 to May 31st, and the

number of members required to obtain a delegate was low-ered from 50 to 25.

State President James DiS-tefano submitted a proposal to change the format of the one-day convention to a one-day business meeting. This proposal was sent to a study committee for further review.

Two other proposals were received from fi lial lodges and were rejected: the Burling-ton Lodge #2223 submitted a proposal requiring filial lodges to purchase tickets to the Carnevale Veneziano, Law & Justice Day Breakfast and Purple Aster. The Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge # 2183 submitted a proposal amending the Rights and Duties of a Social Member to allow social members with 10 consecutive years of service to be recognized as regular mem-bers. Per M.L. ART. 73(k), the rejection of these proposals bars resubmission for a period of two years.

Brother Mercadante an-nounced the results of that morning’s election. The newly elected offi cers included: State Treasurer: Marie Jackson,

and State Trustees - District 3: Charles DeStefano and Steven DeAngelis.

National Delegates were elected as follows: District 3: Anthony Panaggio Jr. and Florence Ferullo Kane, Dis-trict 4: Robert Boncore Esq., District 6 & 7: Marie Jack-son, At-Large: Carmelita Bel-lo, Antonio Sestito, Joseph A. Boncore Esq. and Albert DeNapoli Esq.

Our guest, National Past President and National Presi-dent Emeritus of the Sons of Italy Foundation Paul Polo, addressed the delegation. He noted that the delegation was made up of leaders and not followers. He also praised our President James DiStefano on his initiative in the handling of the per capita increase by National. It is always a plea-sure to have this gentleman at our Conventions as he always brings with him a bit of levity.

The Charitable and Educa-tional Trust Report was given by C & E member Joseph Boncore Esq., who then called on various members to say a few words on each of the charities. Brother DeNapoli

spoke on the necessity of the Commission for Social Justice; Brother Cozzaglio spoke on Alzheimer’s and its effects, Brother Hill noted the discovery of a cure for Cooley’s Anemia by French doctors still being studied for implementation in the United States. Sister Donna Giuliani noted that this year there were 37 scholarship recipients and State Past President Charles Perenick spoke about the Casa Monte Cassino. State Past President Philip Boncore Esq. noted that instead of donations to the Don Orione home, whose ownership is changing hands, donations would be accepted instead on behalf of its founder, Father Rocco Crescenzi. Mary DeMa-nia of the Renaissance Lodge # 2614 spoke on Autism. The report of the committee was accepted.

Our annual Memorial Mass was held at 4:00 p.m., and Reverend Gregory Mercurio delivered a sermon which, like many of his other sermons, had us leaving Mass feeling uplifted.

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183Participates in Relay for Life

For the third consecutive year, the Wilmington commu-nity, including several members of the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183, came together to celebrate life and honor loved ones during the American Can-cer Society Relay for Life, held at the Wilmington high school track on June 17-18, 2011.

Wilmington Lodge members Joe Martiniello and Michael Cai-ra, Event Chairman and Town Manager, respectively, gave opening remarks. The 599 team members, 60 cancer survivors and a record 497 “day of” Relay visitors raised over $140,000 for the fi ght against cancer!

Teams walked all night, and each of the 12 hours of laps had a theme. Many walkers sported costumes. Festivities continued all evening in what seemed a non-stop fl urry of activity: DJ’s and karaoke, games, salsa les-sons, zumba classes and lots of activities for children.

As darkness fell, the celebra-tion turned to its most moving and poignant moments during the beautifully orchestrated Lu-minaria Ceremony. Two trum-pets soulfully blew Taps, while the crowd came together as one to move slowly and respectfully around the track to the melody

During high school, Chris was involved in many extra-curricular activities, in-cluding Club WHS, the Foreign Language Club and Rotary Interact. A talented athlete, Chris was a member of the varsity soccer team since his sophomore year. She was a member of her school’s color guard since her freshman year, served as manager for the girls’ lacrosse team, participated in WHS Lamplighters Drama Guild and was a member of the for-eign language club, where she served as treasurer. She was elected by her peers to represent Wilmington in a mock debate at the State House for Student Government Day. In 2008, Amy was chosen to participate in the “People to People International Student Ambassador Program,” and traveled to England, France and Italy. Amy has also been involved in many activities out-side of school. She has taken dance classes for the past ten years and has been involved in Girl Scouts since the fi rst grade. She has also volunteered her time as a religious educa-tion teacher and choir member. Amy has been involved in the Sons of Italy her whole life. She helped start Wilmington’s Junior Lodge and served as its fi rst president, a position she held for 3 years. Amy will attend Hofstra University in the fall, where she will study Pre-Med with a concentration in Com-munity Health.

Scholarship Chairman Toni Eosco welcomed the nearly 60 members and guests in atten-dance, including State Trustee Denise Furnari and Histori-cal Chairman Delia Bartucca. Mrs. Eosco thanked lodge mem-bers Barbara Campagna and Winnie Carfagno for volunteer-ing to serve on the scholar-ship committee. All enjoyed a full dinner buffet provided by Guido’s Catering of Walpole. Scholarship Award presenta-tions took place immediately following dinner.

Through the fundraising ef-forts of its lodge members, two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were awarded to outstanding college-bound students. Scholarship Commit-tee member Barbara Campagna presented the fi rst award to Lisa Marie Coskren, a graduate of Norwood High School, daughter of Patrick and Linda Coskren and granddaughter of lodge member Mary Ann Naumann. Chairman Toni Eosco made the second award presenta-

Following the awards, Justin Evans, Norwood High School Italian Language Teacher, updated the lodge members on the work and activities of the 67 students in the suc-cessful Italian program that recently completed its third year. Our local lodge, along with the Norwood Italian So-cial Club, donated a total of $2,300 towards the purchase of workbooks, language lab materials, and other supplies necessary to launch the Ital-ian Language Program. Some students work was exhibited for guests to view and enjoy. Mr. Evans expressed that staff and students look forward to the expanded communication and technological capabilities that exist in the new Norwood High School that will allow students to connect with other students in Italy/Sicily far more easily.

Upcoming events include a country western dance in October.

“In Recognition and Apprecia-tion Award” for their unsung community participation and continuing support of the La-dies Lodge. This year we were honored to present the award to Lou Camachio, CEO of Win-throp’s Sound Systems and King of the famous Winthrop Fireworks. For over twenty-three years, Lou has provided us with this spectacular event through private fundraising. The Winthrop American Legion Post 146 hosts the biannual Memorial Day Parade and we salute Commander Lou for all his years of dedication. Lou’s gift bag commemorated his love of the Marine Corp.

Both recipients were honored

at a dinner reception served at the Porthole Pub Restaurant on the Lynnway in Lynn. Over fi fty guests shared in the festivities, topped off by desserts from the Elm Street Bakery in Everett. A note of thanks goes out to Paul Levy at Woodside Hardware for posting congratulations on his marquee.

This little Ladies Lodge com-prised of senior members is very proud of her charitable and educational endeavors for over 50 years and is already planning for next years’ awards event. The success of this lodge awards program is due in large part to the wonderful support of the membership and area merchants.

Installed on May 17th of this year, the Burlington Junior Lodge is on a roll. After only two months, the Lodge has participated in a Cancer fun-draiser, donating $225 toward the total $140,000 raised. The Lodge also participated in the Burlington Fourth of July Pa-rade on a fl oat designed to look like an authentic Italian café and have many events planned for the near future, including a Bocce tournament, a march in a Columbus Day Parade, the purchase of Lodge T-shirts and a Tombola (Bingo) Night as a

wrap-up for the current mem-bership drive.

The fl oat for the parade was built within the span of a week and featured a pizza chef, a café employee, a waitress and two café patrons. Other Lodge par-ticipants either walked along-side the fl oat or carried a ban-ner in front of the convertible used by the Burlington Senior Lodge. Granted a perfect day by Mother Nature, the town fes-tivities were well attended and appreciated. The Junior Lodge’s fl oat was widely applauded and many parade watchers jokingly

yelled out requests for different pizza pies and pasta dishes to the fl oat’s chef. However, the only refreshments that the fl oat offered were biscotti and water to hold over the Lodge’s parade marchers through the hot weather and uphill trek.

Ending at the town common, the Junior Lodge dispersed to mingle with the crowd. The parade and fl oat were largely geared toward publicity as the group begins looking to ex-pand its membership beyond those who joined as the original founding members.

The Burlington Lodge #2223 is offering Italian language classes to anyone interested. Experienced teachers teach the classes and the enrollment cost is $80.00 per session. The classes, in addition to the lan-guage, will explore the culture, terrain, people and Culinary Arts of Italy.

The two ten-week courses will be offered in levels of Beginner

3 eggs 1/2 pound shortening (butter, margarine or butter-fl avored Crisco) 1 cup sugar3 cups fl our1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla2 teaspoons baking powder4 to 6 ounces sesame seeds1 beaten egg for egg wash

Cream shortening and sugar add beaten eggs and vanilla. Gradually mix in fl our and baking powder. This will be soft cookie dough. Place sesame seeds in a fi ve-inch bowl. Using a teaspoon, drop a spoonful of cookie mixture into the sesame bowl. Gently cover with seeds and place on lightly greased cookie sheet.

If desired, beat one egg. Using a pastry brush spread egg wash over cookies prior to baking. Bake in preheated 350°F oven for fi fteen to twenty minutes or until done.

Makes about fi ve dozen cookies. Store in a cookie canister.NOTE: My introduction to the Regina Cookies was in the l950s

when the family decided to bake and sell a selection of cookies in our bakery, along with the Italian bread. This sesame seed cookie continues to be popular in my family. I prepare this downsized recipe to bake for use at home and to give as gifts during holiday.

in tow with fluttering Amer-ican and Italian fl ags. It was the Café Roma.

The new Burlington Junior Lodge had built a life size replica of an authentic Italian

outdoor café-all within one hectic week.

The theme had been chosen only a week before the parade and with the generosity of the Pasciuto family, who offered

their facilities for construction, work was quickly underway. Mr. Pasciuto provided leader-ship, a keen eye for detail and every tool needed to complete the structure. Mrs. Pasciuto provided much support and timely refreshments.

The authenticity of the fl oat was enhanced with real pizza and a realistic set emblazoned with the Italian colors. It was the only fl oat built to human proportions and role-played to appear like a real Italian café. Junior Lodge members played different characters such as the pizza chef, wait staff and customers, while others walked alongside the fl oat. Close be-hind, two members displayed the Senior Lodge banner in front

of the vehicle carrying Patrick and Shirley Moreno, advisors to the Junior Lodge.

The members of the Junior Lodge put forth a tremendous effort upon which they can build for future events. Al-though the fl oat did not win any prizes, the crowd along the parade route rewarded President Adam Tigges and all of the participating members with heaps of praise and ap-plause. Given this fast-paced achievement, there can be no doubt of how successful the lodge will be in the future. A very large thank-you must be offered to Pizza Works and its owner, Ken Agahigian, for his tremendous amount of support as our sponsor.
