Dear Sisters and Brothers;I hope all of you enjoyed the one day conven-

tion as much as I did, there was a great deal of information that had to be disseminated, and much business to be taken care of, and with the great help of all the State Offi cers and Com-missioners, and the delegates, all the necessary work was completed, and we still had time to fraternize with our brothers and sisters. I’d like to thank the Chairman of Permanent Commissions for the great job they did at the breakout meet-ings, to Brother Arthur Bennett thank you for a fi ne job with the Budget Meeting, to Brother Al DeNapoli, thanks for the very professional work with the Social Justice meeting, to brother Pat Moreno, thank you for all your enthusiasm that you shared with the Italian Culture Committee and at the Breakout Meeting. To Brother Phil Privitera thank you for chairing a very produc-tive and enthusiastic meeting. It’s people like these commissioners that put THEIR all into the Order Sons of Italy that makes us such a great organization.

I would like to ask all members to remind their lodge presidents to distribute our booklet on se-curing a lasting legacy to each of their members, please take the time to read this booklet and if you should have any questions, feel free to call the Grand Lodge.

Kathy and I would like to thank all the lodges that have invited us to their lodge cookouts this summer.

I ask that lodges to keep sending in photos and articles of activites that they are having, so that we can continue to share them with all of our membership in the Sons of Italy News.

I hope you’re enjoying the Know your OSIA Council in the newspaper, all the delegates got to see and know them at convention, but we feel that the membership should get to know them also, and be able to put faces to names.

We continue to have Grand Lodge events all through the summer months. Don’t forget our famous state wide Bocce Tournament held at the Watertown Lodge on September 19th. Our C & E Walk-a-thon will be held on September 26th at Breakheart Reservation, Saugus Mas-sachusetts, chairman brother Anthony Panaggio has scheduled a great day for the whole family to enjoy. Brothers and sisters this is our largest fundraiser for our scholarships, and the one thing we must continue to do is give our young-sters a chance to further their education. And become the future leaders of this great country and this great organization.

You have seen the save the date notice in our newspaper for a reception honoring our State First Lady Kathy DiStefano on October 3rd at Crestview, Woburn Masschusetts, for tickets call the Grand Lodge.

November 7th our Sports Commissioner will hold a cribbage tournament at the Quincy Lodge.

Italian Roots: Foggia, Italy

Occupation: Medical Secretary

Joined OSIA: January 1998

Current Lodge: Worcester Lodge #168 Worcester, Massachusetts

Current Position and Main Responsibilities in OSIA: State Trustee - District 2 Initiatives, Plans, Goals: My plans and goals are to increase membership and to get young people interested in the Order Sons of Italy.

OSIA’s Greatest Strength: We have many strengths, our enthusiasm of our Italian Heritage and traditions.

OSIA Could Improve: I am still trying to fi nd the one solution on how OSIA could improve in many areas.

How Can We Do Th at: Not sure.

Advice to Lodge Presidents: Team work, everyone working together.

Meet MATTHEW EZEKIEL, State Trustee - District 3

Hometown: Charlestown,Live – Stoneham, MAItalian Roots: Centrache in the Province of Catanzaro, Calabria, ItalyOccupation: Freelance Production Manager for Special EventsJoined OSIA: --Current Lodge: Medford Lodge #1359, Medford, MassachusettsChief Duties State: Chairman, State Trustees, and District 3 State TrusteeInitiatives, Plans, Goals: Over the course of the next two years, my goals are to help the Order Sons of Italy in America in any way that I can, also to keep our heritage and ancestry alive and remembered. To help promote the Filial Lodges as well as our Grand Lodge of Massachusetts in their endeavors. OSIA’s Greatest Strength: OSIA’s greatest strength to me is the history and heritage it has created here in the United States of America. Th e fact that my ancestors as well as yours came to this great country to make their lives better and also the lives of their future blood. Th ey came together and created this Organization which spread across this great land from the East Coast to the West Coast to unify this thing that runs in our blood. What is this thing that runs in our blood? Italian descent, Liberty Equality and Fraternity meant a lot to them and I feel it is still one of the greatest strengths that hold us together as an Order.OSIA Could Improve: Th e area I would like to see OSIA improve on is with the membership. How Can Th is Be Done: To me, I feel we are not out there enough. Th ere are at least a hundred festivals through this great state of Massachusetts that I think we should start going to. We need to create a pamphlet promoting the OSIA. We need to create something that can be dropped at our local Italian owned and operated stores. We need to tell people who OSIA is and what they have contributed to Italian people and the pride they hold.Advice for Lodge Presidents: All I ask the Presidents to do is teach. What do I mean by teach? It is time to make sure your Council knows the By-laws and what they are suppose to be doing in the seats they are holding. One theme I have been seeing is, as brothers and sisters move up the seats in our Lodges we forget to teach our predecessors what they are suppose to be doing. We allow them to fail and look bad. Th is should not happen! Presidents are there because they have been seen as a beacon of what this Order encompasses and it is Presidents who should be making sure their Council is strong and educated.

Meet FRANCO BATTISTA, State Trustee - District 3

Hometown: Newton, MassachusettsItalian Roots: Bianchi/Battista Fontana Liri, Italy, Province of Frosinone, Lazio RegionOccupation: Administrative Assistant at Genove Oil & Air Co., Inc.Joined OSIA: --Current Lodge: Ambrose D. Cedrone Lodge #1069, Newton, MassachusettsCurrent Position and Main Responsibility: Currently liaison to Walk-a-thon, Tri-Chairperson of Pot of Gold.Plans, Initiatives and/or Goals: I wish to serve my constituents from District 3 to the best of my ability and try to visit each and every lodge in my District as well as throughout Mass., NH, Maine and Vermont over these next two years of my term. I have met some wonderful people and made some long lasting friendships along the way.OSIA’s Greatest Strength: Th e greatest strength of the OSIA I fi rmly believe is Family! Ever since we were little cubs in our Lions’ Den, it was all about “la famiglia”! Sunday lunches, were a MUST and it was a Banquet (4, 5, 6 sometimes a 7 course meal). I’m fortunate to still have both my parents still living and still entertaining the whole family for Sunday Lunch or Dinner; we wouldn’t have it any other way. With family, come traditions, which only you and your Italian family share. Th e diff erent Holiday’s such as Easter, Th anksgiving and Christmas are like no other.OSIA Could Improve: Th ere is always room for improvement no matter what situation. Particularly, throughout the OSIA membership and retention are key elements. How Can Th is Be Done: Lodge Presidents and members need to fi nd ways to draw people to want to join, participate and believe in what we stand for, Liberty, Equality and most important to me Fraternity. Fun functions and more interesting Lodge meetings are a great beginning and sharing those ideas with other Lodges are also extremely helpful.Advice to Lodge Presidents: Th is year our Organization & Education Commission has set up Regional Seminars that are taking place at a Lodge near you. I encourage everyone to attend at least one. You’ll never know what you might gain from this precious experience unless you participate.

He commented on the upgrad-ing of the record system, and benefi ciary fi les, working with new programs and that our as-sociation with Raymond James, our investment company, in fi nding more profi table invest-ments. DiStefano spoke on the Per Capita which the National Of-fice, Order Sons of Italy has increased. As of October 2010 the increase will be $1.50 and in the year 2011 the increase will be $1.00. At this time President DiStefano noted that the Grand Lodge is working on special fund-raising which will help alleviate the per capita increase.

State 2nd Vice President Antonio Sestito chairman of Membership spoke on the necessity of attaining new mem-bers. The Membership Commis-sion has an Incentive Program in place which covers 2010 to 2011. He also suggested the use of Facebook to advertise for New Members. This sugges-tion was used very successfully by one Lodge President. There was much discussion from the attending Lodge Presidents on various suggestions to attaining new members.

The incentive program is as follows: It is based on member-ship totals from June 1st, 2010 to May 31st, 2011. It is based on NET increase in membership in that period.

Lodges with 200 or over mem-bers will receive $800.00

of NightSide on WBZ NewsRadio 1030, shared with the attendees a DVD highlighting many of the major events of the tragic story of Mr. Salvati and three other innocent men who were wrongly accused of a gangland style murder in 1965. Mr. Rea’s determination and investiga-tive powers were such that he unearthed evidence that led to their release from jail and the commutation of their sentence from Governor Weld.

Brother McGowan also noted the recipients of this year’s awards at the Law and Justice Day Breakfast.

Brother Patrick Moreno, Chair of the Italian Culture Commis-sion reported on the work his commission is involved with. He noted that the discovery of PEGmedia.org as a media

a transfer site for community television stations has enor-mous potential to further the education cultivation that we are currently pursuing.

He encouraged all lodges to appoint a Culture Chairman at the lodge level in order to facilitate communication and grow cultural representation in each lodge.

His commission is now at work to uncover and contact persons of expertise in some area of the Italian language, or both Italian and Italian-Ameri-can culture. He also encouraged lodges to request and invite guest lecturers.

Brother Stephen Cozzaglio, Chairman of the Organization and Education Commission updated all on the workings of this commission. He spoke on the integration of the Grand Lodge into the four Organization and Education workshops that were held in Newton on January 23, in Pittsfi eld on March 13, in Braintree on May 8 and Haver-hill on June 5. The workshops were a great success!

Brother Cozzaglio noted the need for these workshops, as many lodges still DO NOT fol-low the proper procedures for Installations. He also made note of the Filial Lodge Presi-dent’s Handbook, which all new presidents should have. Also, the Membership Hand-book for those new members

who join OSIA, which con-tains basic information on the Supreme Lodge, Grand Lodge, and Filial Lodges is available by contacting the Grand Lodge Offi ce. It also contains informa-tion on parliamentary proce-dures and other knowledge that should be known by members of OSIA.

Sister Dorothy Berlandi, Chair of the Public Relations Commission spoke on the new additions to our newspaper and the need for all lodges to send in material of their events so that we share with one another what is happening in the Sons of Italy World. She noted that if you need help just contact her through the Grand Lodge Offi ce and she will gladly help.

Past State President Florence Ferullo Kane spoke on the spe-cial Fundraising that is being held to raise moneys to offset the per capita increases. At present there is a 50/50 board which when the numbers are completely sold at $20.00 each, there are two numbers drawn, the winners will receive $500.00 each (totaling $1,000.00) and the other $1,000.00 goes into a separate account allocated for the Per Capita increases, which will help all lodges.

The other Fundraising Pro-gram is still in the working stages. It is hoped that all the kinks will be ironed out so that it will be made available to all who are interested.

During this one day conven-tion accolades were given to Executive Director Paul Guida for all the innovative ideas that have been instituted in the Grand Lodge Offi ce, the updat-ing of the website, his man-agement skills, with a list too long to mention. A standing ova-tion was awarded Paul and we thank him for all he has done and continues to do. Thank You Paul!

A booklet was handed out to all delegates at this 96th Con-vention, it is also available by calling the Grand Lodge Offi ce. This booklet outlines the many methods in “Securing a Lasting Legacy” through Bequests or other Testamentary Gifts. For any member who would like to leave a lasting gift to the Order Sons of Italy, this would be promoting national education, charitable fundraising, secur-ing adequate laws for benefi ts of our members, enriching the Italian culture and heritage, and combating discrimination while protecting and upholding the positive image of the people of Italian birth or descent.

For how these plans can work for you contact the Chairman of OSIA’s Charitable Endow-ment – Albano Ponte – at (617) 489-5234 or by fax at (617) 489-5371. Other questions can be directed to (617) 489-5234, or by e-mail to [email protected].

Brother Angelo Rossi, Chair-man of the Charitable and Edu-cational Trust called upon the various chairs for Alzheimer’s, Casa Monte Cassino, Cooley’s Anemia and the Don Orione Home, giving an account of our Charities, and the need to sup-port them.

10 Italian sweet pork sausages2 medium onions1 large garlic clove (chopped)2 green peppers3 tablespoons olive, canola, or vegetable oil2 tablespoons oregano (optional)2 potatoes (optional)Mushrooms (optional)Salt

Place sausages in an 8" x 10" baking pan. If desired, sausages can be cut in half for baking.

Remove outer skins from onions. Cut each onion in half, lengthwise, and slice into ½ portions. Add to sausages in baking pan.

Remove stems and seeds from peppers. Wash thoroughly. Cut peppers lengthwise into one-inch portions. Add to baking pan. Sprinkle oregano (optional) and oil over ingredients in baking pan. Stir and salt to taste.

Other Options: Peel skins from potatoes and wash thoroughly. Cut up into two-inch portions and add to baking pan. Mush-rooms can also be added. Cover and bake in preheated 350°F oven for thirty minutes. Check and stir ingredients. Cover and bake an additional fi fteen minutes. Check, stir and return to oven. Removing cover for about ten minutes will help sausages and potato portions to brown to desired consistency. Serves four.

NOTE: This is a recipe that I remember Mama preparing many times at home. But when we had a large number of guests on a summer Sunday in Wilmington, Massachusetts, she placed her large blue porcelain baking pan with all these ingredi-ents over the outdoor open fi replace. The aroma spread through the neighborhood as it baked slowly over the wood-burning fi re. I remember thinking that baking it this way enhanced the fl avor of this meal. Through the years, I have baked this on a charcoal grill as well as on our gas-burning grill. However, it needs to be checked and stirred often to prevent burning.

Chairman of the Organiza-tion & Education Commis-sion Steve Cozzaglio and State Public Relations Commis-sioner Dorothy Berlandi present-ed the overview of each Lodge Offi cer’s duties. The duties were fully explained, and there were many questions presented.

Brother Cozzaglio continued with the explanation of the Parliamentary Procedures for Our Lodges along with an expla-nation of the Grand Lodge Coun-cil and the Commissions.

At this time we will explain what the Organization & Educa-tion Commission is about.

What is theOrganization & Education

Commission?Before answering this question,

let’s look at what the Organiza-tion & Education Commission is not. The O & E Commission is not a Commission that stalks around in the dark of night to

fi nd what fi lial lodges are doing wrong and to cause them prob-lems or embarrassments. It is not a group of individuals who say look at me; I know what is best for you and me.

Rather, it is a group of Sons of Italy members who are charged with:

1. Supervising the spreading of ideals and purposes of the Order by means of

a. Written publications b. Lectures c. Visitations and ceremonies.2. Doing what is necessary to

arrange for the organization of new lodges.

3. Supervising the ceremony at the installation of a new lodge, as well as installation of the of-fi cers and initiation of members at said ceremony.

4. Overseeing that the Filial Lodges observe the rules and regulations of the rituals with the purpose of adding dignity and solemnity to the ritualistic ceremonies of Lodges.

In reality, we are here to serve you, help you to learn more about the Order, to help you have more effi cient and well-run meetings. We will be glad to visit your lodges and sponsor small workshops, but will only come if invited. This is what the Organi-zation and Education Commis-sion is all about.

State Trustee Matt Ezekiel spoke on the “Points You May Want to Know”, which dealt with the Formation of the Nominating Committee, Who can be nomi-nated? Who counts the votes?, Who announces the winners?, President Prerogatives and Ad-ditional duties of the Orator.

Public Relations Chair and O & E Commission member Dorothy Berlandi spoke on the Congres-sional Gold Medal for those of Italian Lineage. We noted very few but are now in the process of researching this further.

The meeting drew to a close at 2:00 p.m., and it was noted that this was a very informative and interesting meeting, as all present participated by asking questions and presenting new ideas. It also showed that many members are still not aware of the many rules and regulations and what the Order Sons of Italy has to offer.

This is the final meeting of this series and we wish to thank all who participated and shared their thoughts with us and hope-fully we have helped you.

The Lodge had purchased a small home on Bradford Street where they held their monthly meeting. The meetings were sparsely attended with a handful of devoted members. Those members who come to mind are: Tony Ruscetta, Guy Pellegrinelli Sr., Tony Polidoro, Nick Papirio and Nick DiNicola. They requested that I, Judge Rudolph A. Sacco run for president and I did. During my presidency it was requested that I send a letter to all Italian-Americans in the city asking them to join the Sons of Italy and that the Lodge was going to be a Mixed Lodge and no longer just men.

After their home on Bradford Street they rented a small hall above the Highland Restaurant on

The Winthrop Ladies Lodge #2071 Scholarship Com-mittee, consisting of Rose LoConte, Joanne Ceraso, Bette Federico, Anne Todino McNeff, Peggy Pacifi co, Marie Parrinello and Mary Saggese, hosted a successful June Schol-arship Awards night to recog-nize a high school student who

has achieved all-around aca-demic excellence, in addition to recognizing an outstanding member of the community.

This year the Scholarship Award was bestowed upon the lovely granddaughter of Sonny and Lucille Conforti, Gina Reppucci. Gina has excelled in her scholastic endeavors, has

obtained athletic achievement records in both softball and soc-cer, and has received numerous accolades and awards through-out her four years at Saugus High School. Holding down her part-time job does not keep Gina from her very active community and church involvements. On and off the playing fi eld Gina is

an exemplary young lady who will be heading off to Southern New Hampshire University to study elementary education. Winthrop Town Council Presi-dent Jeffrey Turco presented Gina with the lodge scholar-ship check and gifts, along with some warm words of wisdom and praise as she embarks on a new and exciting challenge on the journey of higher educa-tion. Present with Gina to share in her award were her parents John and Donna Reppucci, and her brother Johnnie, a senior at Endicott College. President Dottie D’Onofrio called upon Gina to present her mom and grandmothers with lovely bou-quets of roses.

A few years ago, the ladies of the lodge wanted to rec-ognize those who have held a special place in our hearts and so the “In Recognition and Appreciation” Award was created. This year it was a privilege to present the award to Robert A. DeLeo, Esq., Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

A “Then and Now” brief pro-fi le of Bob outlined his long-standing and very successful political career, which started in

Winthrop. Due to his demand-ing schedule, Bob was unable to attend but we were happy to welcome his Administra-tive Aid and gal Friday, Patti DePamphelis, who accepted the testimonial of our appreci-ation. Senator Anthony Petruc-celli spoke of Bob and the strong joint legislative effortsbeing made to insure that our Commonwealth will grow and prosper in these challenging times. President Dottie D’Onofrio spoke of the wonderful support Bob has given the ladies down through the years, including bringing bread to our Italian Pasta Nights, attending Memo-rial Masses we have celebrated, generously supporting our scholarship fundraising pro-gram, and helping us mark our historical 50 year anniversary as a fi lial lodge in the Order Sons of Italy here in Massa-chusetts. Bob has been a good friend and we thank him and wish him every success in all his endeavors.

A special thank you goes out to Dave and Connie Gaul of the famous Winthrop Arms Restaurant and Hotel for their support in hosting this success-ful lodge event.

LODGE NEWSOver the last nine months,

Boston’s Renaissance Lodge of the Sons of Italy has recruited 100 new members. Boston’s Renaissance Lodge is 22 years old and one of the largest Sons of Italy organizations in the country. Its sustained growth is the result of its unique, popular events that have replaced tradi-tional monthly meetings.

New members were welcomed at four very special venues. Last fall, the fi rst new member event was held at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) on Newbury Street in Boston. At this event, all new members enjoyed delicious Ital-ian food and wine upon entering this historic building. Each dish was “homemade” by Renais-sance Lodge member families, and the wine was made by Ar-thur Puopolo’s North End home winery. New members were greeted by the NEHGS research librarian, Marie Daly, who is a member of the Renaissance Lodge. New members toured the facilities and learned how to research their Italian family ge-nealogy using the world famous NEHGS research resources.

Boston’s Renaissance Lodge #2614 Inducts 100 New Members

Last winter, in January, the Renaissance Lodge held its sec-ond new member event at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline. This is a world famous auto museum with a breathtaking collection of an-tique cars. Its current exhibit is “Curves” that includes period gowns on mannequins to match the years of the cars. This gown exhibit was donated by “Yo-landa,” our famous Italian wed-ding dress maven. Again, new members enjoyed “homemade” Italian food made by Renais-sance Lodge families, as well as outstanding wine. A tour of the Museum was given by the Museum President, Michael Iandoli, who is also a member

of Boston’s Renaissance Lodge. Renaissance Lodge members are now looking forward to “Tutto Italiano,” Italian Car Day on the Larz Anderson Museum lawn on August 1. Over 5,000 people are expected to attend.

In the spring, in April, the Re-naissance Lodge held its third new member event at the world famous Shreve, Crump, & Low jewelry store on Boylston Street in Boston. New members were given a tour of the store and were introduced to the “Gurgling Cod” pitcher and the “Make Way for Ducklings” picture frames. They were also given discounts for that evening. Everyone left

with a distinctive silver Shreve’s bag with their purchases. Once again, new members enjoyed “homemade” Italian food made by Renaissance Lodge families. Wine was also available. Even the Shreve’s employees said that they had a wonderful time. We were greeted by Renaissance Lodge member Sibille Fest, who is a senior Shreve’s sales associate.

This summer, in June, Bos-ton’s Renaissance Lodge held its fourth new member event, which sponsored a “VIP” tour of Fenway Park. The event started with a meeting and meal at Ber-tucci’s Restaurant in Kenmore Square, Boston. New members were introduced and sworn in. Everyone ordered from the Bertucci’s menu, and the rolls and pizza were favorites. There were 80 attendees. The O’Brien, Cataldo, D’Eramo, and Pasciuto Renaissance Lodge families, as well as the family of State Sons of Italy President Jim DiSte-fano, had three generations in attendance. These families had grandparents, parents, and grandchildren at the event. Following the meal at Ber-tucci’s, Lodge members walked to Fenway Park for the tour. The highlight of the tour was a chance to actually stand on the ball fi eld itself and touch the “Green Monster.” This is an honor that is only given to very special tours. We will never forget this moment.

Boston Renaissance Lodge #2614 Member Joseph BattersbyRetires After 30 Years in the Military

At a recent celebration held at Maggio’s Restaurant in Revere, Joseph Battersby from Boston’s Renaissance Lodge, OSIA, was honored upon his retirement after 30 years with the US Army.
